Washington’s Olympic National Park ranks among the most popular parks in the U.S. If you’re looking for solitude and breathtaking views, these are the best places to camp inside Olympic National Park.
Deer Park Campground
Just getting to Deer Park Campground is a bit of an adventure, as it requires driving along a twisty road that ends at an altitude of about 5,400 feet. But the site offers some of the best views in the entire park, with the peaks of dozens of mountains in the Olympic Range stretching to the horizon.
Hoh Campground
For a completely different experience, head to Hoh Campground, located in the heart of the Hoh Rainforest. Populated with ancient trees, the rainforest feels like you’re visiting another planet. Just be sure to bring a tent as the area gets 170 inches of rain each year. Reservations can be made for the 72 campsites from June 1 to September 15.
Staircase Campground
The perfect base-camp for an Olympic-sized adventure, Staircase Campground offers outstanding access to the park’s legendary wilderness. Set in an old-growth forest, this campsite sits on the banks of the Skokomish River, with mountain summits lining the horizon. Here, adventurous travelers will have access to several fantastic trails. It is easy to get a spot here during the off-season.
Kalaloch campground
If you’re looking for a campsite with seaside views, Kalaloch is for you. Situated on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this campground offers some of the most memorable views. My mother enters her ninth decade. Thankfully she is blessed with good health.
I still remember ten years ago when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.
One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course that was absurd. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turned out, she had barely spent any time alone, after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for some days. He took her to all the sites—the markets, churches and restaurants. He introduced her to a blanket seller, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some blankets. The seller took her address details and promised to ship them to Canada. They would be arriving in three or four weeks. My mother beamed (眉开眼笑) as she told this story. The blanket seller and my mother apparently built a friendship and she told him to drop by if he were ever in Canada.
To our great shock, her blankets did arrive some weeks later, along with a lovely note from the seller Mustafa. To our even greater surprise, the following year Mustafa himself arrived in Canada. He called our mother to inform her be was in Ottawa.
“I invited him over and he came by for a cup of tea. They drink a lot of tea in Turkey,” my mother told my horrified brother and me.
Her trip of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realization that life is to be lived It reminded me of the line from The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
24. Why did the author's mother go to Turkey alone?
A. To make the author and the brother surprised.
B. To celebrate her 80th birthday independently.
C. To prepare herself to enter het ninth decade.
D. To inform the author that she needed independence.
25. Which of the following best describes the mother's trip to Turkey on the whole?
A. Colorful. B. Boring.
C. Dangerous. D. Challenging.
26. What do we know about the blanket seller?
A. He is poor but generous. B. He is reliable and cautious.
C. He is rich but selfish. D. He is friendly and trustworthy.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. It's never too old to learn. B. East or West, home is best.
C. Life deserves to be well lived. D. Time and tide wait for no man.
C
Albert Einstein (1879 — 1955) was one of the greatest and most original scientific thinkers of all time.
Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich. He went to live in the United States in 1933 because of the rise of Nazism in Germany and Hitler’s persecution of the Jews.
In 1905, while still at Zurich, he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which was based on things everyone may have noticed. If two trains are standing alongside each other and one train starts to move, a person sitting in the train may wonder whether his own train is moving or the other is moving, and before he finds out what is happening, he can see that one train is moving relative to the other. From this and also from other more complicated facts, Einstein came to the conclusion that all motion (运动) is relative and that there is really no such thing as absolute motion. Some of the other conclusions he drew are that nothing can go faster than light, and that if something such as a ruler was moving faster and faster it would seem to get shorter and shorter as its speed was near the speed of light. By 1915, Einstein had made known his General Theory of Relativity. He also improved on Newton’s theory of gravity. Most of his theories have been tested and found to be true though some may sound strange. For his important work he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics.
Towards the end of his life, Einstein was asked by a group of students to explain his complicated Theory of Relativity. He said, “When you sit with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute; but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. That is relativity.”
28. In 1933, Einstein went to live in the United States because _________
A. he loved the U.S more than his own country.
B. he had got some friends there with whom he could work.
C. he wanted to live quietly and happily there.
D. he could no longer live in Germany when Hitler came into power.
29. Einstein published his Special Theory of Relativity when he was _________
A. in the United States.
B. in Ulm, Germany after he got his Ph. D
C. still in Switzerland at the age of twenty six.
D. still at the University of Zurich at the age of thirty six.
30. Einstein added that if something such as a ruler was moving it would seem to get shorter and shorter _________
A. because the ruler itself was short.
B. when it was moving faster and faster.
C. because we can’t see it clearly.
D. because the ruler was broken into pieces.
31. Albert Einstein was world famous for his _________
A. Special Theory of Relativity. B. General Theory of Relativity.
C. improving on Newton’s theory of gravity. D. all his work mentioned above.

Kesa Bhai Prajapati wears a smile as he models blocks of clay into vases on a potter’s wheel. These days, Prajapati, 68, from the village of Modhera in western India, has doubled the amount of earthenware (陶制品) he makes compared to a few months ago, because he no longer has to tum the wheel manually as he could not then afford high electricity bill. That could be up to 1,500 Indian rupees ($ 18.19) a month.
Now, however, his machine moves on solar power as earlier this month Prajapati’s village of around 6,500 residents, consisting mainly of potters, farmers and shoemakers, was declared India’s first village to run entirely on solar energy all the time. “Electricity has helped us to save time and produce more products,” Prajapati said.
India is the world’s third-largest carbon dioxide emitter. It aims to meet half of its energy demands from renewable sources, such as solar and wind by 2030, which the government said in December 2023. The project in Modhera, financed by the federal and provincial government at nearly $10 million, involved setting up over 1,300 rooftop panels on residential and government buildings that were connected to a power plant. The government buys extra energy produced here from residents if they do not use all of the capacity given to the households.
With this money, Praveen Bhai, 43, a tailor, plans to buy a gas connection and stove, since many houses in the village cook food in wood-fired stoves that leave smoky air. “I had to teach the kids under the street lamp. Now they will be able to study inside the house.”
For Reena Ben, 36, a housewife, who also works as a tailor part time, the solar power has hugely aided her work. “When we got access to solar power, I bought an electric motor worth 2,000 rupees ($ 24) to attach to the sewing machine. Now I am able to sew one or two more clothes daily.”
32. Why does the author mention Kesa Bhai?
A. To advertise for his earthen works.
B. To present the hard life in Modhera.
C. To introduce local people’s traditional art.
D. To show changes brought by solar energy.
33. What is special about Modhera?
A. The first to introduce green energy in India.
B. The first to use clean energy in handwork in India.
C. The first to depend totally on solar energy in India.
D. The first to adopt sustainable development in India.
34. What can be known about the solar energy project in Modhera?
A. Great profits have been made.
B. Many other places will follow.
C. Funds come from big companies.
D. It may produce more energy than needed.
35. What is Reena Ben’s attitude to the solar energy promoted in Modhera?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncertain.

Before I could say “Please don’t,”my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week.Oh,and just to be clear,it’s not as if she’s a professional entertainer (演员).My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
“Um,”I said on our way home,“are you sure this is such a good idea?”
“Of course!” she said.“If we want your school’s Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.”
“I know volunteering is important,” I said.“But couldn’t you help out in another way instead?”
She laughed.“Don’t be silly. We’ll have great fun!”
“OK,everyone,”my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday.“We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair.”
“Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s silliest hat.
“I’m super excited to be here with you!”my mom said.“I’m going to teach you a fun little songanddance number I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!”
Oh,please,oh,please,I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill (演习) or a power outage (停电),or anything to stop my mom for completely embarrassing herself—and me!

Nowadays, balloons are made from plastic and filled with gases to make them rise into the air. Balloons have been used in many ways, for example, in science and in arts. They were also used as flying machines. Before era planes were invented, a very big balloon made of special material was filled with a large amount of hotel. The air was heated by fire underneath, and a large basket was attached to Carry passengers. This form of transport became known as a hot air balloon. The first passengers travelled in a hot air balloon in seventeen eighty three. The following year, in june seventeen eighty four, the second hot ter balloon flight was named after the french queen. IT took off in front of the king's of france and sweden and traveled fifty two kilometers in forty five minutes. This flight was much faster than the first, but ended early because of bad weather. In the one thousand and fifties, an american inventor redesigned the balloon, and hot ir ballooning has become a popular sport. In fact, the first man made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. IT was discovered both by an englishman and in american in the same year. But IT was the american who first developed IT on a large scale during the eighteen and sixties. Everybody was excited by this new material. Because IT was so cheap, poor workers were able to buy plastic colors. These plastic colors were hard and uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Poor mothers who had not been able to afford toys for their children were now able to buy pensive ones made of plastic. However, plastic has one series is fault. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily. And when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What's worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down, so IT causes serious pollution. We now use the term White pollution to refer to plastic pollution. Smith, i'm sorry to disturb you, but I really have something important to discuss with you. I think we can have robots make cough medicine. For us. Robots, you must be joking. We are a small company. You see. we make ten different kinds of cough medicine, but each Operation only has four steps. How many robots do we need them for? The first robot will measure and mix the materials for the medicine. The second robot will pour the mixture into the bottles, and then the third one will put on the labels. The last one will packed the bottles into boxes. And what happens when one of the robots breaks down? The robot company . will have a mechanic here within an hour. I just can't imagine what will we have here, a building with robots rolling around doing the work that's IT. And these robots are great workers. They won't feel sick and they will work twenty four hours a day. IT sounds like a good idea, but what about the workers here? That's what I worried about. We won't need them anymore. mr. Listen to the next question. The desire to stay cool is, of course, nothing new. The ancient egyptians and romance employed various techniques to cool down their buildings from the outside heat. Some people have even claimed that the first air conditioning device was invented in ancient egypt. The ancient egyptians would hang wet plants outside their windows, and when the air came into the house, IT would be cooled by the cool water drops on the plants. The romans understood that if they could bring cold water under their houses, then the temperature inside would fall. And if we really stretched the meaning of the phrase air conditioning, then hand fans have been used since the very beginning of the history. People realized that they could move air by waving something, and IT would cool them down for a while. The chinese, invented in huan went a step further in the second century, and invented of that could go around similar to the fans we might see today. Although IT was powered by servants. Some kinds of plastic can catch fire very easily. And when they do, a poisonous gas is produced. What's worse, plastic takes a very long time to break down, so that causes serious pollution. We now use the term White pollution to refer to plastic pollution. The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. IT was discovered both by an englishman and an american in the same year, but IT was the american who first developed on a large scale during the one hundred and sixty. 【原文】M: Balloons have been popular for centuries. The earliest balloons were made from parts of animals. Nowadays, balloons are made from plastic and filled with gases, to make them rise into the air. Balloons have been used in many ways, for example, in science and in art. They were also used as flying machines before aeroplanes were invented. A very big balloon made of special material was filled with a large amount of hot air. The air was heated by fire underneath and a large basket was attached to carry passengers. This form of transport became known as a hot-air balloon. The first passengers traveled in a hot-air balloon in 1783. The following year, in June 1784, the second hot-air balloon flight was named after the French Queen. It took off in front of the Kings of France and Sweden and traveled 52 kilometers in forty-five minutes. This flight was much faster than the first, but ended early because of bad weather. In the 1950s, an American inventor redesigned the balloon and hot-air ballooning has become a popular sport since then. Hot-air balloon rides have become tourist attractions and there are even festivals to celebrate them. The largest European festival is in Bristol, England. It lasts for four days and is regularly attended by around half a million people each year.

13. What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A. Cooling fans. B. Air conditioning. C. Room design.
14. Which country might have invented the first cooling device?
A. Egypt. B. Rome. C. China.
15. Which cooling method has the longest history?

16. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A radio programme. B. A culture magazine. C. A history book.
【答案】13. B 14. A 15. C 16. A
【解析】
【详解】The desire to stay cool is, of course, nothing new.
The ancient Egyptians and Romans employed various techniques to cool down their buildings from the outside heat.
And if we really stretch the meaning of the phrase “air conditioning”, then hand fans have been used since the very beginning of the history. People realized that they could move air by waving something and it would cool them down for a while.
The Chinese inventor Ding Huan went a step further in the second century and invented a fan that could go around, similar to fans we might see today, although it was powered by servants.
That’s all for today. Please stay tuned for more updates.

My mother enters her ninth decade. Thankfully, she is blessed with good health.
I still remember ten years ago when she turned 80, she surprised my brother and me with what she described as “independent birthday”.
One day she informed us she'd booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was absurd. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A weak, little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned she told us it had been a wonderful success.
Her trip of independence seems to be thoughtfully based on a realization that life is to be lived. It reminded me of the line from The Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. C

Albert Einstein (1879 — 1955) was one of the greatest and most original scientific thinkers of all time
Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich.

A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncertain.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. B

A few weeks ago, when my mom and I were shopping,we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And,right then and there,my mom said,“I know the perfect song and dance.I’ll teach it to the kids!”
But obviously,my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

Arizona’s mother is pretty talented!”
Not only did my mom turn out to be more than a little OK at performing, but she was also good at teaching us the song and the dance steps.By the time of the fair,I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for us.“I’m really glad you helped my class with the performance,”I said to my mom as we drove home from Winter Fair.My mom reached back and held my hand.“Thanks for saying that,Arizona.I can see why you might have been embarrassed, but I had such a great time.”
