When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him, as his parents always had him do some housework or do some part-time jobs. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood friends. He had a better career, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study. Researchers followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who worked when they were young enjoyed happier and more successful lives than those who did not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were useful members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the research. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them, too.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males all these years. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s boyhood-activity scores with their mental-health scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, hard work in school, and the ability to deal with problems.
The relation (关系) between what the men once did as young boys and how they turned out as adults was very sharp. Vaillant and his team found that those who did the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with other people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed (失业的). The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class (社会和经济阶层) made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence. They also help him understand that people must work with others towards common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
1.What can you learn about John?
A.He liked doing part-time jobs. B.He enjoyed his career and marriage.
C.He received little love from his family. D.He had few friends when he was a child.
2.According to Vaillant, why could John be better off than his childhood friends?
A.Because he did part-time jobs after work.
B.Because he felt proud of himself when working.
C.Because his working experience in his childhood was of help.
D.Because he was happier than his friends when they were young.
3.How did Vaillant and his team get the findings of the research?
A.By comparing different sets of scores. B.By checking the men’s family social class.
C.By recording the boys’ effort in school. D.By testing the men’s problem-solving ability.
4.The purpose of the passage is to tell us that ________.

Have you heard of (听说) dazi? Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with Chinese young people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we haven’t known him or her before.
The dazi culture is about finding the right person to do the right activity with. Xiaoyue, a young woman from Ningxia, has met many dazi because of her love for basketball and biking. Having a dazi not only gives her company (陪伴) but also helps her enjoy sports more.
These dazi relationships are very different from close friendships. As for close friends, we need to stay in close contact. With a dazi, you don’t have to do so. Many dazi may not meet again after a trip or a game together. So, many people believe having a dazi makes their social life easier and more comfortable.
Finding a dazi shows that Chinese young people want clearer boundaries (界限) in their social relationships. Dazi will not talk or ask a lot about their personal lives. And they hope these relationships can let them share their hobbies and interests, or that they can help them to improve themselves.
Although finding a dazi has many good points, we should be careful and put our safety first.

In our daily lives, we talk with many people. Being polite is not just a good habit; it’s a key to making communication smoother (顺利的) and more pleasant. English has special ways to show respect, especially when we ask for help or permission (许可).
When we ask someone to do something, how we ask makes a big difference. Instead of a direct command (命令) like “Sweep the floor”, a polite request (请求) is better. Using “Could you please ...?” works well. For example, “Could you please help me with this heavy box?” is a good request. “Could” sounds softer than “can”, which shows more respect. Adding “please” makes it even friendlier.
When we want permission, the words we choose are also important. “Can I...?” is common with friends, but “Could I...?” is more polite, especially with adults (成年人) like teachers. Asking a friend, “Can I borrow your book?” is fine. But asking a teacher, “Could I ask a question?” shows respect for their position (职位).
Politeness is also two-way. When you cannot help someone, just saying “No” can sound rude (粗鲁的). It’s better to give a short reason. For example, you could say, “I’m sorry, but I have to finish my homework first.” This shows you respect their request, even if you can’t agree.
Using these polite phrases is an easy way to build better relationships. Small words can make home and school a happier place for everyone.

A.By telling stories. B.By using numbers.

3.细节理解题。根据“When we ask someone to do something, how we ask makes a big difference. Instead of a direct command (命令) like ‘Sweep the floor’, a polite request (请求) is better. Your Life in 2060
Imagine it’s 2060. You are 40 years old, have a job, and a family. As you get ready for work, you stand in front of your mirror. “Turn red,” you say. Instantly, your shirt changes color from sky blue to deep red! This happens because tiny smart electronics inside the shirt reset to make the color switch. Looking at yourself, you can hardly believe you’re 40. You look much younger. Thanks to amazing new medicines, people your age might live to be 150 years old. You’re surely not middle-aged yet!
Next, you go into the kitchen to get breakfast. You pick up your cereal (麦片) box. Suddenly, your shoes speak up: “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that.” How do they know? They read the special electronic code (代码) on the cereal box and checked the nutrition information. You ask your kitchen instead: “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” The kitchen looks at the food you have available. Then, a list of good breakfast choices appears on its screen for you.
“Are you ready for your trip to space?” you ask your son and daughter. You remind them that long ago, in 2005, only trained astronauts went to space. Now, ordinary people can go for fun vacations! You hand each child three strawberries. “The doctor said you need these for your space travel,” you explain. Medicine has improved so much. Doctors can put special medicine right into normal foods like these berries. The kids put the strawberries into their mouths and head for the door.
Now it’s your turn to go to work. Your car scans (扫描) your fingerprint and unlocks. “My office. Autopilot,” you command. The car drives itself smoothly onto the road and joins the traffic on the highway. You sit back, relax, and open your electronic newspaper. The latest news downloads onto the screen right away. Instead of reading lots of words, you watch short video clips showing the news stories as you travel.

三、U6单元话题热点预测
In the city of Zhengzhou, there is a hotpot (火锅) restaurant, Shengyousheng, is doing something very special. It gives jobs to people who are hearing-impaired — that means they can’t hear well or at all.
The restaurant’s name includes (包括) the words “more” and “sound”. It shows its hope to bring more voices into the world. About half of the workers there have trouble in hearing, including 31-year-old Deng Wei, who works as the kitchen manager. He makes about 4,000 yuan each month and says he enjoys working in a quiet and friendly place.
Shengyousheng is a self-service hotpot restaurant. Customers choose their own food and make their own sauces (调味汁), so there’s not much need to talk. This makes it easy for hearing-impaired workers to do their jobs. To help with communication, the restaurant uses big posters on the walls. These posters show simple hand signs, like how to say “thank you” by placing one hand near your chin (下巴) and moving it forward (向前). There are also signs for “food”, “hello”, and “wait for a while”. Next to each picture, there are easy-to-read words, so customers can understand what the hand signs mean. Each table also has cards that customers can use to write to the workers if needed.

I am glad to hear from you. You asked me to give you some advice on your career (职业). Here it is.
First, think about your interest. You can only be successful and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also makes you happy. Then, you must master the field (领域) you are interested in. Also, you should get to know the people who work in that field. When your mind and heart work together, success comes.
No career is more important than another. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programs. You have good communication skills. You are always active in school plays and you win many speech competitions. All these lead you to that direction.
A.IQ plays an important role in people’s development
B.social and economic class decides how our career goes

In the city of Zhengzhou, there is a hotpot (火锅) restaurant, Shengyousheng, is doing something very special. It gives jobs to people who are hearing-impaired — that means they can’t hear well or at all.

For me, the best thing is that I can communicate with my dog through eye contact (交流). For example, when I look at him, he seems to understand what I want. Besides being wonderful friends, dogs can also help keep our homes safe. Their loyalty makes them natural guardians.
I have had my dog at home for three years. I see him as a family member. We get on very well with each other. I walk him after meals every day, and we often play games in the park. He is always kind and loving to me. This special friendship is the main reason why I love dogs so much.
