Students may push each other or run down the steps, which sometimes leads to accidents like falls or stampedes (踩踏). To keep students safe, three primary school students invented “voice-controlled smart stairs”. These smart stairs look just like ordinary stairs, but they have hidden sensors. There are 8 flat film pressure sensors on the right side of each step, and a long linear sensor along the middle line. When students step on these sensors in the wrong way, the stairs automatically play voice prompts. For example, if someone walks on the middle line or crosses the steps, it says “Please keep to the right” or “Do not cross the steps”. If many people stand on one step (showing a crowd), it warns “Do not crowd, please move slowly”. The invention was not easy to make. The biggest challenge was programming the sensors to work correctly. With their teacher’s help, the students learned basic coding and fixed the problems. Now the smart stairs work well in their school’s model. The students hope that one day real stairs in schools will use this design. The voice-controlled smart stairs are helpful for two reasons. First, they remind students to follow rules and stay safe. Second, they teach kids about using technology to solve real-life problems. It’s a great example of how young inventors can make their surroundings safer. 1.Why did the students invent the voice-controlled smart stairs? A.To make stairs look more beautiful. B.To help students find classrooms easily. C.To keep students safe from accidents. D.To practice their coding skills. 2.If there are 15 steps in total, how many flat film pressure sensors are there on the right side of all the steps? A.8 B.9 C.100 D.120 3.What can we infer from the passage? A.The smart stairs are already used in all schools. B.The students got help from their teacher with coding. C.The smart stairs have no sensors on the left side. D.The stairs can talk to students like a teacher. 4.What is the main idea of the text? A.How to avoid stampedes in schools. It turns out that autumn might be the best season to work out! During this time, the weather is great. After a hot summer, the autumn air is cool and fresh, like a natural air conditioner (空调)! In such weather, you can run, hike, cycle or walk outside without sweating (出汗) much. No more worrying about colds—autumn makes outdoor exercise safer, even when playing for a long time. Cool autumn days and daily exercise can help you sleep better, keeping you healthy. Also, autumn is very pretty! Colorful leaves and nice views can make you happier. When you exercise in nature, fresh air and beautiful views clear your mind too. And don’t forget food! Autumn is harvest time—you can easily buy apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes or pears. They’re full of vitamins, delicious but not expensive. Eating these foods and working out is great! Autumn exercise can also get you ready for winter. It helps you have happy chemicals (化学物质) to fight sad feelings from short days. It also makes your body stronger, so you might not catch a cold in winter. 1.What does the underlined phrase “work out” mean in the first paragraph? It helps you have happy chemicals (化学物质) to fight sad feelings from short days.”可知,秋天的锻炼能让你为冬天做好准备,它能帮助你产生快乐的化学物质来对抗因白天短而产生的悲伤情绪,所以“It”指代的是“Autumn exercise”。故选C。 Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat (汗) while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The people participating in the study were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied. From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates. When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear warm and light clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running. 1.What may keep many people from running in the open air? A.Sunburn and wrinkles B.Hot weather and much sweat all over the body. C.Air pollution and climate change. D.Low temperatures and freezing cold winds. 2.What can we learn from the passage? A.Running in cold weather doesn’t need a lot of energy. B.Running in cold weather needs heavy clothing to keep warm. C.Running in hot weather causes hearts to beat more slowly than in cold. D.Running in hot weather produces more heat than other movements. 3.What is the main purpose in writing this passage? A.To study why the drop in temperature is good to run. B.To compare benefits of running in winter and summer. C.To encourage people to keep running outdoors in winter. D.To show us how to keep healthy while running in winter. 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 【导语】本文通过科学研究论证了冬季跑步的益处,并鼓励人们在低温环境下坚持户外跑步。 1.细节理解题。根据“Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.”可知,低温和寒风使许多人不愿在户外跑步。故选D。 2.细节理解题。根据“When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy.”可知,在寒冷天气跑步不需要太多能量。故选A。 3.主旨大意题。根据“So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. At first, he was afraid. But the need to know and understand was greater than his fear, so he went out. He soon found that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of his home. And he fell, in fear. But he soon sat up, and started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel (松鼠), and a woodpecker (啄木鸟), both of which moved away from him. So he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved. He had beginner’s luck when he fell into a ptarmigan’s (雷鸟) nest. In the nest were seven chicks. He knew this was meat, as his mother gave him. So he ate them all. As he walked away from the nest, the mother ptarmigan attacked him. He fought back, biting her wing with his small teeth. He was excited and happy. He was fighting for meat, fighting to kill. It was what wolves did. Then he left the ptarmigan free and rested. As he watched her, something rushed down from above him, picked up the ptarmigan and flew back up into the sky. It was an eagle. Later something small jumped in front of him, so he put his paw on it. It was a young weasel (黄鼠狼). It made strange noises, and soon the mother weasel appeared. She jumped at his neck and bit him with sharp teeth. She wasn’t big, but he didn’t know how dangerous weasels were. Suddenly she jumped, and bit into his throat. He tried to fight, but the weasel held on. The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she-wolf, heard his calls and came to save him. (Adapted from White Fang) 1.The following sentences would best be put at the end of ________. He was learning. Live things were meat, but if they were big enough, live things could also hurt. It was better to eat small live things. A.Paragraph 3 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 5 D.Paragraph 6 2.Which is the correct order of what happened to the gray cub? a. He fell down and felt quite afraid.    b. He met a squirrel and a woodpecker. c. He was bitten in the throat and was dying.   d. He saw something pick up the ptarmigan. e. He had a fight with the mother ptarmigan. Some migrate long distances. They know exactly where to fly, without a compass! Migrating birds often fly thousands of kilometres. They find their way back to the same place year after year. Even young birds that have not migrated before seem to know which way to go. In Europe, you may see big groups of swallows sitting on telephone wires. As the weather gets colder in autumn, they get ready to fly away to warmer countries. These birds fly south to Africa for the winter. They will return north to Europe to breed next summer. Birds have many ways to prepare for their migration journey. The little sedge warbler (水蒲苇莺) doubles its weight by eating lots of insects just before it leaves Europe. It flies 9,000 kilometres. It travels without stopping for four days to spend winter in South Africa. Bar-headed geese (斑头雁) breed in Tibet (西藏). They then fly over the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山) to India. They have to fly at a height of over 6,000 metres to get over the huge mountains. Other birds, such as cranes, also fly high over mountains. 1.According to the text, which is birds’ most amazing skill? A.Their ability to catch food. B.Their sense of direction. Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”. The first kind of friend is an acquaintance (点头之交), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t miss them. The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. B.A safe invention for school stairs. C.How to learn programming easily. D.Different types of school stairs. BEAT THE HEAT:Extreme Heat Heat-related deaths can be prevented. A.study at school B.do exercise C.solve a problem D.go on a holiday 2.What can we know about autumn food from the text? A.It’s expensive but delicious. B.It’s only good for children. C.It helps people sleep better. D.It’s full of vitamins and cheap. 3.What does the word “It” refer to in the last paragraph? A.Good sleep. B.Your body. C.Autumn exercise. D.Cool autumn days. Many people take running as a way to keep fit. 四、U5单元话题热点预测 One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub (幼兽) found the way out of the cave. The Bottle School Project is an amazing environmental initiative. These schools are built using plastic bottles filled with packed sand. This construction method is not only eco-friendly but also very practical. The bottle walls provide excellent insulation, keeping classrooms cool in hot weather and warm in cool weather. This innovative idea helps solve two problems at once. First, it reduces plastic waste by reusing bottles that would otherwise pollute the environment. Second, it provides affordable school buildings for communities that need them. The bottles are free, and local people can help with the construction, making it a community project. Students who attend these schools learn about environmental protection through their own school building. They see firsthand how recycling can create something useful and beautiful. This practical lesson in sustainability is just as important as their academic lessons. 1.What are the bottle schools built with? A.Glass bottles. B.Plastic bottles with sand. C.Metal bottles. That is why they are called “pest friends”. The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends; you know a little of what they like or dislike, a little about their family, such as your names, you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (恐惧), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel. The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. They will care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you. We all have our pest, guest and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember all best friends start out as just acquaintances. 1.How does the writer start the passage? A.By giving examples. B.By telling stories.
