All eyes are on Qatar as the 2022 FIFA World Cup began on Nov 20. The competition, the first to take place in the Middle East, is an opportunity for the small country to show itself on one of the world’s biggest stages. But just how will the World Cup influence Qatar? And will it lead to any long-term change in the country?
As the smallest country to ever host the event, the whole country has been trying its best to make it happen. A total of $220 billion has been spent preparing the stadiums, building miles of new highways, a subway system, a whole new airport. and high-rise buildings for the World Cup, according to The New York Times. "We're using this tournament(比赛)as a tool for change," Hassan AI Thawadi, the secretary general of Qatar’s World Cup, said in an interview.
Whether the tournament will bring economic benefits to the country, however, is still unknown. Although the tourism industry(旅游业)will experience a boost during the event, it is to be seen whether this will have a lasting impact on Qatar's economy. The oil-filled country’s main driver of economic growth has been its energy exports. Hosting the World Cup likely only brings investment into areas which are not that important to the economy as a whole.
Additionally, "all research into past international tournaments shows that these events don't promote long term economic development for host countries," said US economist Andrew Zimbalist.
What the event will do for sure, though, is to make Qatar attract more international attention. Qatar will be able to present itself and the Arab world as rich and promising. It will be a sharp contrast to how many people view the region - a place filled with political troubles and crises.
Although Qatar doesn't stand to benefit much economically from the tournament, they will forever change how people think about the small desert country. For many years to come, people all round will remember the fun they had watching soccer whenever they hear the name Qatar.
32. A great deal of money was spent building all the following s except _____.
A. a new airport B. a railway station C. sports stadiums D. new roads
33. What does the underlined word "contrast" mean in Chinese?
A.矛盾 B.转变 C.对比 D.问题
34. What message does Andrew Zimbalist want to express?
A. International events will make no contributions to economic development according to the history.
B. It is possible that those events bring great changes to the economy of a country during the event.
C. All the past host countries didn’t see any improvement in economy.
D. Although tourism benefits a lot from the tournament, the results may not last for a long time.
35. Which statement about Qatar is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Qatar is the smallest country to ever host the World Cup, so it isn’t well prepared
B. Though Qatar is a very small country, it is one of the world’s richest countries based on its energy exports.
C. It is generally known that Qatar is a peaceful and wonderful nation.
D. Qatar is sure to achieve long-lasting benefits from the tournament.

Ancient art doesn't have to be boring. Technology in the 21st century can help to bring it to life by combining the best of the old and the new.
Along the River During the Qingming Festival
Walking into the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, people were amazed by seeing a huge digital painting. Scientists digitised(数码化)the famous painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival by Chinese artist Zhang Zeduan.
In the digital painting, a lot of these details are animated. Farmers work in the fields, sailors move around their boats and people eat and do business in restaurants. Parts of the background are also animated(做成动画).You can see the wind blowing through the trees and across the water. These animations perfectly combine modern technology and ancient art.
Digital technology allows today’s artists to express their ideas in ways that ancient artists would not believe possible. Techniques such as animation and 3-D digital projection(投影)make art come alive.
Dunhuang Cave Paintings
Dunhuang Caves, which are protected ancient treasures in the Gobi desert in Northwest China, are filled with paintings and sculptures with a lasting value. This artwork was created over a period of around 1, 000 years.
The good news is for art lovers who cannot travel and for the caves. Scientists have created a 360-degree,3-Ddigital projection of the caves, which makes the artwork come alive. There is also a function that lets viewers zoom in and enjoy the paintings and sculptures in greater detail.
Digitising ancient art allows us to better understand the ancient art while protecting the original artworks for the future.
76. What digital technology is used in both of the artworks?
77. What's the meaning of digitising famous artworks?
78. If possible, would you like to visit ancient art by yourself or through modern technology? And why?
