Here are some of the world's most unusual libraries.
A Tree Library
When you have a dead 110-year-old cottonwood tree outside your house, what better idea
than to turn it into a library? This is just what the librarian and artist Sharalee Armitage
Howard did.The tree trunk is a library complete with a roof,door,shelves inside,and a
selection of books. This library in Idaho is a part of the group Little Free Libraries, where
people can exchange books.
Gute Bucher fur Alle
Gute Bucher fur Alle is a German charity launched in 1970.It currently operates two large
ships,which have docked at 480 harbors in 150 countries,and welcomed some 49
million people onboard. The volunteers staffing the ships hold events to promote literacy,
education,cross-cultural cooperation, and distribute books to those who have little access
otherwise.Maybe not a library as such,as the books are not expected to be handed back, but a
great idea,nevertheless.

The Red Phone Boxes Libraries
When cell phones took over from landlines and public call boxes,England's iconic(
)red phone boxes became empty and unused. In the southwestern county of Somerset,
England, the first exchange library inside the phone box was founded, giving these typical
England phone boxes a new life and keeping them from going to rot.
A Bookless Library
Probably the saddest inclusion in this list is the Bexar Bibliotech Library in Texas. There is
reading material for sure, but it is all digital, and walking into this library has been likened to
walking into an Apple store with lots of screens. While you won't find colorful book covers or
feel the thrill of pulling a book off the shelf,it seems this is the library of the future.
21.Where can readers exchange books?
A.A Tree Library and Gute Bucher fur Alle.
B.A Bookless Library and Gute Bucher fur Alle.
C.A Tree Library and The Red Phone Boxes Libraries.

While touring Mississippi in an old car,John Ingall and his wife,Jane, discovered a plant
that would change their lives-the hardshell gourd().
At first,it was mere curiosity,but soon,they saw gourds everywhere-carved,hanging,
glowing as lanterns.Drawn to them,John,a lifelong farmer, decided to try growing them.
Back in Warwickshire,he planted a few seeds among his tomatoes. The plants grew
quickly, reaching six feet tall.Weeks later,he found large gourds hidden among the leaves.
Since then,he has harvested about a hundred gourds each year, each with a different shape-
some long and thin, others round.Unexpectedly,Ingall had been trying to retire when he first
discovered gourds. After managing two farms-one from Jane's family and another for growing
crops-he had always planned to stop working at 65.Unlike many farmers who never retire,he
wanted to find a new interest.
Farming had been his childhood dream, despite his parents'objections. They, shaped by
the Great Depression, had hoped he would take an office job.Yet,his love for rural life never
faded.Over 45 years,he moved from dairy to beef, then organic farming, and finally let the
land return to nature.Change,he welcomed-but only in a controlled manner.
Yet gourds pushed him beyond his comfort zone."Not until I started working on them did
I realize-I am an artist!"said John. Now,as one of the few gourd artists in the U.K.,he
creates lanterns with colored glass, astonishing visitors.
As well as selling gourds through his personal studio,John markets them at art fairs,
donating profits to fight the climate crisis."It's very satisfying.Gourds are an entirely
sustainable material for many types of art,and every gourd is unique,"he says."I enjoy
growing them. It's amazing what you can do with gourds."
24.What motivated John to plant gourds?
A.His wife's encouragement.
B.His desire for a new interest.
C.His fascination with the plant.
D.His longing for a big harvest.
25.What do we know about John?
A.He resisted the life change.
B.He favored organic farming.
C.He had little interest in retiring.
D.He went against his parents'will.

Planetary geoarchaeology(地质考古学),the study of how cultural and natural processes
on Earth's moon,on Mars, and throughout the solar system may be changing, preserving,or
erasing the material record of space exploration, has been proposed by two researchers from
the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas and their colleagues as a new
scientific subfield.
"Until recently,we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the
mid-20th century as relatively safe,"said Justin Holcomb, researcher at the Kansas Geological
Survey."However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly beginning
to be at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn't paid during the new space era."
Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and
the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of
the ODYSSEY Archaeological Research Program directed by Holcomb's co-author,Rolfe
Mandel.
How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an
open question.“We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial(地球外的)
surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection,"Holcomb said."However, some sites,
such as the very first footprints on the moon represent the material footprint of a long history
of migration."Beyond those "firsts",making decisions on a case-by-case basis will be necessary
to sort through the tens of thousands of pieces of debris()now in orbit or dropped across
the surfaces of the moon and Mars, which many people refer to as "trash"but Holcomb and
his colleagues see as heritage.
Holcomb thinks geoarchaeologists ought to be a part of upcoming NASA missions to
ensure the security and preservation of space history. As for being part of a space mission
himself?"I'll leave that to other geoarchaeologists,"Holcomb said."There's plenty to do
down here, but I do hope to see an archaeologist in space before it's all over.
28.Why has planetary geoarchaeology been proposed?
A.To protect space heritage.
B.To study the solar system.
C.To resist space exploration.
D.To found a scientific field.
29.What do we know about the material record of space?
A.It threatens the movement of people into space.
B.It is the main focus of the ODYSSEY Program.
C.It shows the whole process of human migration.
D.It is not as safe as expected in the new space era
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The methods of classifying space trash.
B.The first footprints on the moon and Mars.
C.The question of planetary geoarchaeologists.
D.The discussion on identifying space heritage.
31.What does Holcomb suggest other geoarchaeologists do?
A.Learn from scientists like him.
B.Lead upcoming NASA missions.
C.Participate in space exploration.
D.Ensure the security of astronauts

Fungi()are among the most important organisms on Earth. They're key actors in
forest carbon storage, nutrient cycling,as well as plant growth and resistance to environmental
stress. They are also important to human cultures, including as a source of food, medicine and

art. This is why it's an understatement to say that the world's ecosystems and human societies
are shaped by fungi. And yet fungi continue to be an important but overlooked element of
conservation strategies.
Around84%of known vertebrates(脊椎动物)have IUCN(国际自然保护联盟)
conservation statuses, but only 0.5%of described fungi are on the IUCN Red List.Fungi are
hard to study due to their microscopic size, short lifespans, and hidden habitats.Much of their
diversity remains unknown,as many seemingly identical fungi are genetically distinct species.
This complexity makes fungi conservation less appealing to the public.
To protect the unknown, some initiatives are emerging. In Quebec, over 70 biologists
signed an opinion letter encouraging the government to integrate fungi into its legislative
framework.Such progress is not trivial and may help correct misconceptions about fungi that
郑
continue to be present among the public, economic sectors and policymakers. For example, the
misconception that fungi are plants is something that still persists to this day.Allowing this
misconception to continue is harmful to the field of fungi, and may be preventing it from
becoming an independent discipline that deserves dedicated specialists.
Failing to protect fungi threatens their vital roles in ecosystems and human life.Like
plants and animals, fungi face extinction risks from habitat loss, pollution, invasive species,
and climate change. Many undiscovered species, especially in remote areas like rainforests,
may already be at high risk.To conserve fungi,we must gather more data on their diversity,
fund research, and attract young scientists to biology. The more we study fungi, the clearer it
becomes how much we still don't know.
32.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Human society and nature originate from fungi.
B.Fungi are the most important organisms on earth.
C.Environmental pressure can cause enormous damage to fungi.
拓
D.Fungi are of great importance in ecosystems and our societies.
33.What contributes to the lack of fungi conservation awareness?
A.Their simple genetic structure.
B.The difficulty in distinguishing species.
C.Their demanding needs for living conditions.
D.The insufficient financial support for fungi research.
34.What does the underlined word "trivial"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Invaluable.B.Insignificant.
C.Apparent.
D.Limited.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Fungi:Forgotten Guardians Awaiting Conservation
B.The Conservation Crisis:Fungi on the IUCN Red List
C.Exploring the Unknown:Future Challenges in Fungi Research
D.From Plants to Independent Discipline:The Cognitive Revolution of Fungi

Why Thinking About the Future Makes Your Life Better Now
We often hear phrases like“stay in the moment'”or“live for today”,and while
mindfulness is undeniably powerful, research shows that looking ahead-thinking about the
future-can actually improve your life right now.36 Here are some foundational tools that
can help you think forward more effectively.
Recognizing and redirecting thought patterns. You should become aware of when your
thoughts are stuck in past regrets or current obstacles, and then redirect them toward desirable
future outcomes.37
The"What do I want?"exercise. This simple daily question helps train your brain to focus
on what you're moving toward, not what you're trying to avoid. It builds clarity and solution-
oriented thinking.

Visualize in vivid detail what you want your future to look like-not just the
outcomes, but how you feel, act, and live day to day.Writing it down helps strengthen your
vision and fuels motivation.
Intentional action lists. These are like to-do lists with purpose.Instead of tasks for the
sake of productivity, each step is intentionally in agreement with your long-term goals.
Research shows that practicing these skills can reduce symptoms of depression and
increase optimism-often in just a few weeks. The takeaway?39 When you focus it on the
future you want, you build momentum()in the present.
And you don't need a five-year plan or a perfectly crafted vision board to benefit from
future thinking.40 By doing so,you can see where you're going-and remind yourself why
today's effort matters. When you stay connected to where you're headed, even the smallest
actions begin to feel more meaningful.
A.Creating a future image.
B.Your attention is your most valuable resource.
C.Constructive thinking supports emotional well-being.
D.By doing so,you can get a better understanding of future.
E.What matters is creating just enough distance from the present.
F.This shift breaks the cycle of learned helplessness and inspires renewed hope.
G.In fact, imagining your future self is one of the most motivating things you can do.

As the final chapter of our academic journey drew to a close,my classmates found
themselves involved in the excitement and nostalgia()of preparing themselves for the
upcoming graduation ceremony. With the weight of years of memories and aspirations hanging
in the air,John, the monitor, stood before us in the classroom, his eyes twinkling with an
idea.
"Friends, this graduation is not just about saying goodbye,"he began, his voice
resounding through the room."It's a celebration together.Let's make it unforgettable by
coming up with the most creative and heartfelt ideas."
The room burst into lively discussions, and my classmates proposed three practical ideas:
a multimedia slideshow displaying class memories,a talent show featuring student
performances, and a"Gratitude Wall"where we could express appreciation for teachers and
classmates. Each plan aimed to make the evening memorable and celebrate our journey
together. However, two students stood out with their innovative proposals:David and I.
David,a natural-born problem-solver,stepped forward with a slight smile."Why don't we
organize a'Time Capsule Ceremony'?"he suggested.
What's the "Time Capsule Ceremony"?Our classmates reacted with confusion, scratching
their heads in wonder.Yet,the novelty of the idea quickly sparked curiosity, causing them to
wait eagerly for David's further explanation.
"Each of us can bring an item that represents our time here, such as a photo,a note,or
even a small trinket(小装饰物).We'll box them and bury it beneath the school's oldest tree..
Ten years from now,we'll reunite to dig it up and relive our memories."
The whole class erupted in cheers, captured by the idea of preserving their youth and
reconnecting with it in the future. But just as the enthusiasm was reaching its peak,I,
nicknamed "Smart"by my class, the class's tech genius, had another amazingly creative idea in
mind.
