(2025·河北省武安市高一上期中)At thirteen,I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me.When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks,I could not.
In my first literature class,Mrs.Smith asked us to read a story and then write about it,all within 45 minutes.I raised my hand right away and said,“Mrs.Smith, you see,the doctor said I have attention problems.I might not be able to do it.”
She glanced down at me through her glasses,“You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang.I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me.It was about a blind person,Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up.Instead,he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn't I the “blind” one in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts flowed and my pen started to dance.I completed the task within 40 minutes.Indeed,I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. Now that Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up? I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs.Smith,so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day—with an “A” on it.At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying.”

(2025·浙江省会稽联盟高一上期中)Everyone wants to feel happier. But sometimes happiness can be elusive (难以得到的).That's why Yale University created a course about happiness. It was designed and taught by Laurie Santos,a professor of psychology. It was originally named “Psychology and the Good Life” and soon became the university's most popular course ever!
In 2020,the happiness course went online through the learning site Course. Now it has been revised for teens. The six-week free course launched on January 16,2023 and consists of short TikTok length videos that talk about happiness and mental well-being,and has the goal of achieving both.
In a few days, more than 13,000 teens applied for the course online and to date more than 290,000 people have viewed the course information. The response shows just how necessary this course is.Today's teens are experiencing feelings of isolation (孤独),depression, and anxiety and more than 37 percent of high school students said they suffered from poor mental health, according to a survey from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Almost half of the students said that they felt continually sad.
According to Santos, teenagers are trying to be happy but are going about it in the wrong ways. The course focuses on the things that these young adults can do and gives them the tools to do so.Some of these include volunteering or doing random acts of kindness for others.Other strategies include how to silence your inner-critic and how to promote self-acceptance.But one of the most important tools for teens is teaching them how to regulate their emotions.
“If we can teach teens to try to make changes to things they can control, they feel more empowered,” Santos said.“If they feel more empowered, they feel more in control of their life. And if they feel more in control of their life, they're not feeling helpless. Then they don't tend to be as depressed.”
