Xiaohe is a young girl with a determined character. Her father,a lawyer, always wears a smart suit and works in the court. He assumes that a legal career is a great option for Xiaohe. However,Xiaohe has a talent for sports, spending a lot of her free time jogging to build her strength and keep her slim figure. She dreams of becoming a professional athlete. This difference in their aims creates a generation gap.Her father often ignores Xiaohe's interest, focusing only on what he thinks is best. One day, after an argument, they decided to have a heart-to-heart chat.Xiaohe apologised for her rudeness first. Then she described in detail her love for sports and how it could have a positive impact on her life. Her father sighed and then shared his own memories of giving up his athletic dreams for family and admired Xiaohe's courage to pursue her own dreams. He realized that he should respect Xiaohe's individual choice.Currently, they have settled this issue—they found a middle approach.Throughout this process, they learned to understand each other better.

Step One Lead-in
Have you ever argued with your parents? What do you think are the common reasons why children argue with their parents?
Yes,I have argued with my parents.I think there are several common reasons why children argue with their parents: First,it's about study.Parents always want us to get good grades. But we kids feel tired and need some time to relax.Second, friends can be a problem.Parents might not like our friends. They may think our friends are not good for us.We think parents don't understand us.Third, clothes are another reason. We want to wear cool or fashionable clothes. But parents may say the clothes are not proper. They want us to dress in a more traditional way.Last, electronic devices.Parents worry we play too much on phones or computers. They set rules on how long we can use them. However,we think we can control ourselves.

3.What do you usually do to ease family conflicts or generation gaps?
4.How do you think we can prevent family conflicts or generation gaps from happening?
Your presentation:
In my family, family conflicts or generation gaps usually occur because of different opinions on daily matters, like how to arrange free time. When these conflicts or gaps happen,I feel frustrated and a bit sad,as it makes the family atmosphere tense. To ease the situation,I usually try to communicate with my family members calmly.I listen to their views first and then share my own thoughts patiently. To prevent such problems from happening,we should respect each other's choices and hobbies in daily life. Also,we can have regular family meetings to talk about our feelings and plans, which can help us understand each other better.I believe by doing these,we can maintain a harmonious family relationship.

Like Father,Like Son
(The living room①.Friday night.A table and two chairs at front centre.Grandfather and Father,seated② at the table③,are playing chess④.)
Grandfather:And...I win!
(Son enters room.)
Father:Not again! Oh look,here comes my boy.[1]How are you,son?
Son:(nervously⑤ approaching⑥ the table) Erm...Dad,can we talk?
Father:Sure! You know you can always turn to your dad for⑦ a chat⑧.
Son:OK.Here it is.[2]I've decided not to go to university.I want to focus on⑨ my band⑩ and have a career⑪ in music when I leave school.

Father:What's wrong with⑯ being a lawyer?Lawyers help people and are respected⑰ by others.

其中主句为you said...,宾语从句由that引导,when you were his age是时间状语从句。
Father:And you wanted me to be an engineer!
Grandfather:I just wanted you to be happy, and an engineer—a happy engineer.
Father:But in the end㉗,you just advised me to think㉘ carefully.
Grandfather:Yes,and you have found the career that suits㉙ your talents㉚ [5].I'm so proud of㉛you.Your son is proud of you, too.

Son:Well,I could try...

(2025·福建省龙岩市高一上学期期中)As a child I was one of the 125 people at our family get-together for New Year. These days we were a much smaller group in Belle Valley,Ohio.I insisted on acting as hostess and wanted to bring back the joy I'd felt at my childhood New Year that filled with love.
As family members arrived at the hall,I handed each one of them a numbered card and said,“Time for the alphabet (字母表) game.” “What kind of game is that?” one of my great-grandchildren asked.“Well,” I said,“who's got number one?” A cousin raised her hand.“Tell us something you never forget,” I said.“Something that begins with the letter A.” My cousin smiled.“Apple pie!” she said.Great-granddaughter Mindy was next.“B,” she said.“I am impressed by Buckeye Country.” “Cookies!” Number 3 shouted.
Until Number 17,“The next one's a challenge,” I said.“Who's got 17?” Ryan,my son, slowly raised his hand.“Q,” he said.“Quaker City Carnival (狂欢节).” The room went silent.“It's one of the oldest traditions in Ohio,” Ryan said.“Grandma and Grandpa met there. That's where they fell in love. That's where this whole thing started. This whole family.” Ryan looked around the room, making eye contact with everyone.“We wouldn't be here celebrating New Year together if it wasn't for Quaker City Carnival.”
The room burst into laughter and was full of love.“This is the best New Year we've ever had,” a great-grandson said to me secretly.Whatever their New Year would look like when they grew up,they'd remember this one.And for me,I had an unforgettable New Year to treasure—a memory where love started with the letter Q.

(2025·江苏省海安市高一上学期期中)Your sanity (理智) isn't only important because you are important, but also because your children need sane parents. And there are just a few rules that you'll find, after you get the hang of them, help you keep your head when your children are crying.
So who are the best parents you know? The ones who have a seemingly instinctive (本能的) ability to say and do the things that result in happy,confident,well-balanced children?Have you ever wondered what makes them so good at it?Most of the best parents have one key thing in common. They're relaxed about it.And the worst ones are worried about something.Maybe they're not stressed out about how good they are as parents, but they're anxious about something that affects their ability to be a really good parent.
There are a couple of parents who are neurotically clean and tidy.Their children have to take their shoes off at the door or the whole world falls apart, even if the shoes are clean. They get really worried and nervous if their children leave anything out of place or make any kind of a mess, even if it gets cleaned up later. It makes it impossible for their kids to relax and enjoy themselves,in case they get grass stains on their pants or knock over a sauce bottle. As a result, their children may become very well-behaved but not flexible or sociable.
On the other hand, the really good parents expect their children to,be noisy, messy, energetic, whiny (爱发牢骚的) and covered in mud. They take it all in their stride. They've got 18 years to turn these small creatures into respectable grown-ups,and children can pace themselves. There is no rush to get them acting like adults because they'll get there in good time.

6.How does the text develop?

A
(2025·浙江省温州市高一上期中)As a child, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania.Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.
Since my first visit to the farm,I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. However,my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I want to climb the stone walls.” I said.“Heavens,no! You'll hurt yourself!” The response was just as I'd expected. But before I left the room,I was stopped by my grandfather's loud voice.“Now hold on just a minute.” I heard him say.“Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me,“and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life.Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures.I'll never forget what he said.“Fred,” he said, smiling,“you made this day a special day just by being yourself.Always remember, there's only one person in this whole world like you,and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit.“There's only one person in this whole world like you,” the kids will hear me say,“and people can like you exactly as you are.”
1.Why did the writer enjoy his visits to the farm?
A.There were old stone houses.
B.He could experience new fun there.
C.He missed his grandfather.
D.He was allowed to climb the stone walls.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

B.The writer didn't know the possible danger of the stone walls.
C.The writer's grandfather backed him up to follow his own heart.
D.The writer became a TV program host due to his grandfather's influence.
从第三段祖父说的话“Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
3.Which word can be used to describe the grandfather?
A.Adventurous. B.Open-minded.
C.Determined. D.Responsible.
4.What attitude do the author's parents hold towards his climbing the stone walls?
A.Supportive. B.Negative.
C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
根据第二段 “My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling.”

(2025·河南省郑州市高一上期中)As birth order is clearly one of the many reasons that affect development,we should pay much attention to it.Big brothers and sisters usually develop leadership early in life, mainly because of the responsibilities for younger children given to them by their parents. The danger is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme (极限),he or she can become an overbearing person who won't listen to others because they think they are the leaders.
Studies of nearly 300 people have found that a person's first child is usually the most strongly motivated towards achievement. This is mainly the result of parental expectations.Research also suggests that firstborn children generally become more conservative than other children because they receive most of the parental orders and rules.Used to caring for others, they are more likely to move towards such leadership professions as teaching and politics.Less social and flexible because they become accustomed in the very early years to acting alone, they may have difficulty making close friends.
By contrast, the researchers say later children are more likely to be more relaxed and sociable than the eldest child because their parents are more relaxed. However, later children are often less ambitious and may be uncomfortable making decisions for others, and will seek work that fits their needs. This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing.Later children may be good sellers because persuasion (劝说) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children.Younger children tend to remain forever “the baby” enjoyable to be around, but at times too dependent on others.
5.What does the underlined word “overbearing” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Trying to make other people obey without considering their ideas or feelings.
B.Being unable to express what one really feels or like to listen to follow others' ideas.
C.Liking depending on others and thinking others are right.
D.Changing easily to adapt to new needs, conditions or ideas.
解析:选A。 根据第一段 “he or she can become an overbearing person who won't listen to others because they think they are the leaders”可知,“overbearing” 用来形容那些认为自己是领导者,不听从别人意见的人,A项“试图让别人服从,而不考虑他们的想法或感受”符合此意。
6.What might a younger child want to be according to the passage?
A.A librarian. B.A doctor.
C.A writer. D.A teacher.
根据第三段 “This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing.”
7.Why may later children become good sellers?
A.They feel uneasy when making decisions for other people.
B.They are very good at persuading others.
C.They have great wish to develop leadership.
D.They are good at selling books and enjoying freedom.
根据第三段“Later children may be good sellers because persuasion may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children.”
8.What's the best title for this passage?
A.Which Is Better: Being the Eldest or the Youngest?
B.Birth Order and Marriage
C.The Relation Between Birth Order and Job Success
D.Effects of Birth Order on One's Personality

2( ) Don't use your meetings to single out one person for creating a problem and don't lecture the kids about the way they act.You might take a problem-solving approach by saying,“The house has been pretty messy lately. What can we do about that?”
Letting kids have too much power. While you want to ask for the kids' opinions, make it clear that they don't have equal say in important family matters, like whether you're going to move.3( ) Then they know you are interested in hearing their thoughts on the matters.
Going too far off the topic.Your kids may begin to get off the topic and if you don't bring the conversation back to the task at hand, you may feel the meeting is pointless.4( )

4.解析:选E。前文提到“Going too far off the topic”以及“Your kids may begin to get off the topic”,指出孩子可能会偏离主题,如果不把对话拉回正轨,会议就无意义。 E 项中“tell them to get to the main topic”与前文“bring the conversation back to the task at hand” 呼应。
G 项中 “ends up with an endless argument” 与前文 “Getting into arguments” 相呼应,形象地说明了争吵导致的不良结果。

The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house—my morning alarm.
As I walk toward the kitchen,I'm greeted by my mother standing over the cooker. She effortlessly cooks a dish that mixes Western and Eastern styles,a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother's recipe (食谱).
Since my grandmother's passing,I've become more aware of my mother's aging and her devotion to cooking for us.She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries—Korea,Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me,my partner and our kids.In every other year, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her partner.
According to Statista, most Canadians report spending between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their houses.10 percent stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal.My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking goes beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce and finds the best deals. She takes everyone's preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual (仪式) ,bringing the family together to connect and share.Helping her out in the kitchen requires a great deal of patience.Yet,I know it's her way of expressing love.As I prepare the vegetables, she notices that my carrots are not evenly sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task.“Just do the dishes.”

(2025·浙江温州高一上期中联考)Parents often assume that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That's typically the case because parents feel that could help their children go to top colleges. However,Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.
Their 14-year-old son,Mike,is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world's top IQ club.He completed his high school, associate's and bachelor's degrees all in three years. That's not all.He also ran two tech companies, founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish,an invasive species.
But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills.Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son.Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills.“But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he's just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa got to know about their child's intelligence when he entered preschool.A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different approach to support his fast development. Many parents aren't comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds,but Mike's parents saw the value in letting their child go through it.“I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use.“We let him order food when he's 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa.
Thanks to his parents,Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

C
When we're in trouble,we always ask our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground?Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways,so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they didn't need to know more about technology. However, many parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days, many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them. There's also an amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don't get in real life.Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背) when we must accept a “friend” request from family members.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow parents to become a part of our online lives.Sometimes we don't want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. But if you do accept, then you will feel yourself being watched and no longer feel free to communicate the way you did before.
A survey suggested parents shouldn't take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request,it doesn't necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it means that he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you choose not to add them to your friend list.
8.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

D.Social networks offer parents a motivation to educate themselves.
根据第二段中“However, many parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives.”
9.What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent's friend request?
A.They hide something from their parents.
B.Their parents make negative comments on them.
C.They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
根据第三段中“But if you do accept, then you will feel yourself being watched and no longer feel free to communicate the way you did before.”
10.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How to use the social networks correctly.
B.How do social networks affect people's life.

(2025·扬州大学附属中学高一上期中)Teens often find themselves in difficult situations with friends where they struggle to communicate their needs or their values.Even when their gut (直觉) is telling them that someone is crossing a line, they may struggle to express that the situation is making them uncomfortable. For this reason, parents need to work with their teens to establish boundaries (边界) with others.
Although boundaries are different for everyone, when done correctly, they help teens set limits with others in order to protect themselves.Setting boundaries allows teens to communicate with other people about what is OK and what is not OK with them and is important to teen friendships.
What are boundaries?Boundaries are limits teens establish in order to protect themselves in some way from being hurt, manipulated (操纵),or taken advantage of.As an expression of self-worth,boundaries let other people know who they are, what they value, and how they want to be treated.Additionally, boundaries help to create space between teens and other people when they need it.
Learning how to set boundaries—both physical and emotional—plays a key role in growing up.It's also essential to developing friendships that are respectful, supportive and healthy.Unfortunately, though, many teens have trouble setting boundaries with their friends; and when this happens,it puts them at risk for everything from unhealthy friendships to bullying (霸凌) or abuse.
Of course, setting boundaries isn't easy. It's uncomfortable and forces a teen to stand up for themselves. What's more, communicating boundaries to other people can lead to difficult conversations or uncomfortable situations. However,it's one of the most important things that teens need to learn how to do.
