How to Apply for Scholarships
Unlike most financial aid, scholarships allow you to earn money for college without the worry of needing to pay it back. Here is some advice on how to apply for and potentially win a scholarship!
Finding Scholarships that Fit Your Needs. Scholarships are often offered to specific groups of people, and your background can open up scholarship opportunities.
★ If looking for scholarships in the US, you can start by searching the U.S. Department of Labor’s scholarship search.
★ If you come from a military family, look on the Federal Student Aid website for information on scholarships available to you.
★ If you know what colleges you plan to apply to or are already admitted into a certain college, look for merit scholarships(优秀奖学金) offered by these specific schools. You can find this information on their website or through the financial aid office.
★ Some colleges and private organizations offer service-based scholarships. If you have been particularly engaged in serving one specific cause see if there are scholarships which specifically offer money to students who have served that cause.
Writing Scholarship Essays. Do some research on the organization offering the scholarship and write down what they care about in one sentence. This will help you better understand your audience and consider ways to tailor your application to their expectations. For example, let’s say the organization wants to invest in future leaders. In your essay, you should include stories that demonstrate your abilities as a leader (in big or small settings). Please note: the last thing a scholarship committee wants to read is an essay lacking real personal information or flavor. Write in a voice that is true to who you are. Tell stories to illustrate your points but never lie about your experiences. Most importantly, don’t be disqualified for silly reasons like word limits, spell check and deadlines.
Finding the right recommenders. Choose a teacher, coach, or employer who knows you well. Academic references should come from teachers and school administrators, while character references can come from employers, coaches or unrelated adults who you interact with regularly. Avoid relatives and friends. Sponsors naturally assume that their opinions are not objective and may not take them seriously as a result.
36. Compared with other financial aid, what’s the advantage of scholarships?
A. It needn’t be paid back.
B. It is easier to apply for.
C. It can satisfy all your needs.
D. It offers a larger sum of money.
37. If you’ve already been admitted into a university, which scholarship best suits you?
A. Department of Labor’s scholarships. B. Merit scholarships.
C. Federal Student Aid scholarships. D. Service-based scholarships
38. What should be avoided in writing scholarship essays?
A. Doing some research beforehand.
B. Offering supporting evidence.
C. Adding some fictional stories.
D. Keeping the deadline in mind.
39. Who is not qualified for being a recommender?
A. Your uncle. B. Your employer. C. Your colleague. D. Your teacher.
40. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A textbook. B. A travel brochure
C. A science magazine. D. An official website of a university.

For 25 years, Elephants Alive has been studying African elephants, to ensure their survival and to promote harmony with humans. We work in the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Area, monitoring elephant population dynamics and movements across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
We have used over 180 satellite collars to understand elephant movements and developed an individual elephant identification database of over 2,000 elephants. Our long-term research is providing vital information for conservation management, helping to secure the future of these elephants.
We are now urgently prioritizing (优先处理) the small populations of elephants remaining in southern Mozambique. There are three National Parks here, Zinave, Banhine and the Limpopo National Park — with wildlife corridors (通道) linking these reserves. However, poor farmers living in the reserves or the corridors linking them, are worried about their crops’ being attacked by the elephants. Where income is limited, poverty may drive some locals into illegal killing of elephants for both their meat and teeth. Our research is showing that when elephants feel challenged, they may attack crops or run through corridors under the cover of darkness to try and avoid conflicts with humans.
Elephants Alive is developing bee-keeping and agricultural programmes with local women in South Africa as a proof of concept to be carried out in Mozambique. Growing crops that elephants are known to dislike in conflict areas can provide valuable income to poor communities that have to share their land with elephants as these crops can be sold for income. Elephants are known to be scared of bees, so bees can also be used to protect crops and at the same time produce honey, which can be sold for money. By developing bee-keeping near Protected Areas, and uplifting women as social role models and community leaders, peaceful coexistence with elephants can be realised.
Please help support this urgent work to protect the elephants in Southern Mozambique and uplift the rural communities in these crucial wildlife corridor areas. Your donation counts!
41. How did Elephants Alive monitor elephant population dynamics and movements?
A. By consulting local people. B. By referring to elephant database.
C. By seeking help from volunteers. D. By making use of high technology.
42. What’s the purpose of the Elephants Alive’s long-term research?
A To better protect the safety of elephants.
B. To persuade farmers to give up farming.
C. To better study the living behavior of elephants.
D. To prevent the population of elephants from increasing.
43. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The poverty in Mozambique.
B. The National Parks in Mozambique.
C The illegal killing of elephants in Mozambique.
D. People’s conflicts with elephants in Mozambique.
44. Which can best describe the measures taken to help solve people’s conflicts with elephants?
A. Easier said than done. B. Kill two birds with one stone.
C. Three heads are better than one. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

A. Appeal to people to donate. B. Praise researchers’ efforts.
C. Introduce bee—keeping programmes. D. Stress the importance of National Parks.
A research project called Mineral has created robots that move around in farm fields. The project aims to use computers to help farmers grow more food in ways that are healthy for the environment.
With the number of people on earth getting bigger each year, more food needs to be grown in order to feed everyone. As weather patterns continue to change because of the climate crisis, this task is becoming even more difficult. Some experts say that to feed everyone, more food will need to be grown over the next 50 years than in the last 10,000 years. In the past, farmers tried to quickly increase the amount they produce, using methods that were not always healthy for the environment— more fields, fertilizers, and pesticides。
Instead, the focus of the Mineral project is on getting farms to produce more by improving conditions for each plant. Elliot Grant, who leads the project, says the goal is to “manage the plant instead of the plot.” Mineral’s team spent several years talking to farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. That led to the creation of special robots, called “plant buggies”.
At first, the buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took pictures with cell phones. Over time, they’ve been improved repeatedly. The plant buggies roll on four wheels and are high enough to glide(滑行) over rows of plants without hurting them. They’re covered in solar panels and have strong wheels, allowing them to roll through muddy fields. The robots can take detailed pictures of plants, track each plant’s location, and measure the plant’s size.
Before, farmers had information about the soil and the weather, but they couldn’t track every plant. Now, with Mineral’s robots, they can. By collecting lots of information like this, Mineral believes computers can help farmers make predictions about how their plants will grow. Studying each individual plant could end up saving time and money. For example, if robots can spot which plants have diseases, farmers can quickly get rid of these plants before they ruin the entire crop, allowing farmers to only fertilize and water the plants that truly need it.
46. What’s the Mineral project’s goal?
A. To replace farmers with robots.
B. To design and sell farming robots.
C. To better handle environmental pollution.
D. To improve food production in a green way.
47. What contributes to the need for more food?
A. The increasing population. B. The constant disasters.
C. People’s bigger appetite. D. The development of industry.
48. What does the underlined part “the plot” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The series of events. B. A secret plan.
C. The mark on a map. D. A piece of farmland.
49. Which aspect of plant buggies is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. Its classification. B. Its structure.
C. Its low cost. D. Its shortcoming.
50. What is special about plant buggies?
A. They can collect soil information.
B. They can make weather predictions.
C. They can monitor each plant’s condition.
D. They can help fertilize and water the crops.

Gloria Scott decided it was time to call an electrician in early August after she turned on a light switch in her kitchen and suddenly a flash of light flew overhead. Obviously, the lights need repairing.
Electrician John Kinney fixed the problem and got her lights working again. But when he returned to his own home that weekend, he couldn’t stop thinking about Scott, 72, living with her dog in her shabby house in Woburn, Mass.
“She reminded me of my grandma, who passed away 10 years ago,” said Kinney, 37, who runs Kinney Electric. “Her wiring was in bad shape and I really worried about her safety.”
The following Monday, Kinney returned to Scott’s home with an extra offer. While organizing things inside her house, he noticed that she had no hot water coming out of her faucets(水龙头). He also discovered that her kitchen sink was broken and the ceilings were full of holes...
It was then that Kinney decided to start a Facebook page called “A Nice Old Lady Needs Help” and raise funds to do all of the repairs. To his surprise, it went viral. In less than a month, nearly $115, 000 was raised and the campaign now has a new name: “Gloria’s Gladiators.”
“We were hoping to inspire others and that’s exactly what is happening,” said Kinney, noting that the Gloria’s Gladiators group now has more than 15, 000 members—many of whom were inspired by Scott’s story to begin doing free home repairs in their own neighborhoods.
Scott felt so thankful for Kinney and other volunteers’ help that she was speechless.
Kinney said he’s thankful for the opportunity to repair Scott’s home, and there is something else that has also brought him joy.
“We’ve opened up Gloria’s world,” he said. “Now, I hope we can do the same for all of the other Glorias out there. Nobody should have to go through life alone. ”

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’d like to share a piece of good news with you.
Next week, an activity called BookCrossing will be held by our School Youth League Committee. As its name suggests, BookCrossing means books are passed from one to another. Students can place their favorite books in public areas, and those interested can pick them up for reading, before putting them where they were.
It is without doubt a meaningful activity which can not only help students get into the habit of reading, but also contribute to promoting certain virtues among participants, such as sharing and taking good care of others’ items. Apart from that, BookCrossing conveys the message of environmental protection by encouraging borrowing books instead of buying new ones.
I will be more than delighted if you get involved in this activity. I can make a promise that it will benefit you beyond your imagination. Come and join us! You won’t regret it.
Yours,
Li Jin
