American Jake Pinnick comes from a small town called Kewanee.
Pinnick said when he told friends and family he wanted to go to the Wudang Kungfu Academy in China, the response was typical. “It’s not a usual thing to say, but it is pretty normal for kids to want to get out of a place like Kewanee. Most kids say something like they want to move to Hollywood and become an actor,” said the 30-year-old. “When I first thought about it, it was daydreaming for myself, too.”
Once at the academy, Pinnick said fitting in was softened by other foreigners in the area and at the school. Getting used to life was surprisingly easy given its peaceful nature. He found himself more at home in Wudang than in Kewanee. Locals were more than welcoming and willing to engage.
“The culture shock wasn’t that bad. Surprisingly, I feel more of that going back to America now ... Learning the language took time, but everyone around the school knew foreigners, so we had fun speaking broken English and Chinese back and forth at first.”
After settling into a routine, Pinnick set about engaging in Chinese culture, including Kungfu training. He was also attracted by its philosophical tradition of living in harmony with the universe.
Pinnick said he had to go home after six months and immediately wanted to return to China, feeling it had become his home more than America, and he’d begun rewriting himself overseas.
His life now goes around training, teaching and studying. He graduated from the academy in
2014 and still helps teach there.
Pinnick said his goal is to one day return to America and teach what he’s learned. Looking back, he said he’s grown by leaps and bounds from a small-town American kid with an unshakable daydream.
4. What did Pinnick’s family think of his idea of learning Kungfu?
A. Unrealistic. B. Creative.
C. Challenging. D. Disappointing.
5. What mainly helped Pinnick adjust to life in Wudang?
A. His fluent Chinese language skills.
B. The strict Kungfu training at the academy.
C. His previous knowledge of Chinese culture.
D. The help from foreign students and locals’ kindness.
6. How did Pinnick feel after his first return to America?
A. He felt connected to Wudang.
B. He decided to improve his English skills.
C. He was excited to be back with his family.
D. He wanted to open a Kungfu school there.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Jake Pinnick struggled with culture shock in Wudang.
B Jake Pinnick missed Kewanee while studying in China.
C. Jake Pinnick found a new home and purpose in Wudang.
D. Jake Pinnick pursued acting in Hollywood after Kungfu training.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. A 7. C

Young sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.
Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sun-ward side of the plant during the day or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone, called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flowers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said, “We’re currently testing this idea.”
8. What does the underlined word “staking” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Tracking. B. Fastening.
C Growing. D. Searching.
9. What is the result of sunflowers being stopped from moving?
A. They won’t grow well.
B. They will grow faster than usual.
C. They won’t swing back though set free.
D. They will produce a number of new genes.
10. Why do mature sunflowers stop moving and face east during the day?
A. To save energy for further growth.
B. To attract bees with morning warmth.
C. To avoid being damaged by strong sunlight.
D. To receive more sunlight for photosynthesis.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Sunflowers rely on bees to regulate their growth hormones.
B. Scientists have genetically modified sunflowers to track artificial light.
C. Sunflowers exhibit animal-like behaviors through their responses to light.
D. Morning sunlight helps sunflowers produce more auxin than other plants.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C

While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
12. According to the author, what is the primary threat posed by over-trusting Big Tech?
A. It will cause people to rely entirely on screens for communication.
B. It may lead to the rapid development of super intelligent machinery.
C. It could weaken our ability to think and to use our minds independently.
D. It prevents artificial intelligence from solving complex problems effectively.
13. What is supposed to be included in a mindfulness practice?
A. Concentrating on making proper gestures.
B. Being aware of our body’s role in thinking.
C. Attaching importance to different body parts.
D. Laying emphasis on nonverbal communication.
14. Why does the author mention gesturing during conversations?
A. To argue that people should speak less and gesture more.
B. To show that body language is more effective than speech.
C. To illustrate how physical actions can support and clarify thinking.
D. To emphasize the importance of nonverbal communication in AI development.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence
B. The Art of Mindful Thinking in the AI Age
C. How to Improve Communication Through Gestures
D. The Greatest Threat of Super Intelligent AI Machinery
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. B

How Hobbies Help Us
Far from a waste of time pastimes are good for body, brain and spirit. ___16___ Whether you prefer hiking, sudoku, dancing, watercolor painting or playing the piano, your hobbies are not only making you happier, they’re also making you healthier.
A widespread and harmful myth is that engaging in hobbies is self-indulgent (放纵) or even a waste of time. ___17___ For example, jogging is good for the heart, while crossword puzzles can improve cognitive ability. Enjoyable hobbies release feel-good chemicals, lower stress hormones. This then leads to a series of health improvements like better sleep and a stronger immune system.
In addition to providing health protection, hobbies improve our ability of the brain’s neural networks to change, adapt and make new connections, which can help you in areas beyond just one particular skill. ___18___ With the brain, it’s a “use it or lose it” type of situation, especially as humans get older. So people always want to be exercising it to keep it strong, and hobbies are a really fun way to do that.
___19___ Hobbies are a perfect way to find a sense of community, make new friends and catch up with old ones. Many hobbies, like choir singing or team sports, are group-based. Even when you are not actively doing the hobby, activities like taking classes or joining online groups let us socialize.
Most importantly, hobbies make us happier. Studies show that people who engage in hobbies daily are less stressed and more content. On a fundamental level, humans need meaning, something that gives them a sense of purpose. ___20___ Engaging in hobbies lowers your risk of depression and boosts your self-esteem.
A. People should choose hobbies that are easy to carry out.
B. Hobbies also play an important role in our career development.
C. The positive health outcomes of hobbies are available to everyone.
D. Being able to do what you’re passionate about really contributes to that.
E. This may be why people who play a musical instrument often do better in math.
F. Perhaps the most underestimated benefit is hobbies’ impact on our social well-being.
G. In fact, nearly all hobbies can provide measurable health benefits, which differ by activity.
【答案】16. C 17. G 18. E 19. F 20. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章主要阐述了爱好对人们在身体、大脑、社交以及心理等方面的积极作用。
【16题详解】
文章开篇点明主题“Far from a waste of time, pastimes are good for body, brain and spirit.(消遣不仅不会浪费时间,而且对身体、大脑和精神都有好处)”并结合下文“Whether you prefer hiking, sudoku, dancing, watercolor painting or playing the piano, your hobbies are not only making you happier, they’re also making you healthier.(无论你喜欢远足、数独、跳舞、水彩画还是弹钢琴,你的爱好不仅会让你更快乐,还会让你更健康)”可知,本文强调爱好对身体、大脑和精神有益。
根据上文“A widespread and harmful myth is that engaging in hobbies is self-indulgent (放纵) or even a waste of time.(一个广为流传且有害的误解是,从事业余爱好是自我放纵,甚至是浪费时间)”及下文“For example, jogging is good for the heart, while crossword puzzles can improve cognitive ability. Enjoyable hobbies release feel-good chemicals, lower stress hormones. This then leads to a series of health improvements like better sleep and a stronger immune system.(例如,慢跑对心脏有好处,而填字游戏可以提高认知能力。愉快的爱好会释放让人感觉良好的化学物质,降低压力荷尔蒙。这会带来一系列的健康改善,比如更好的睡眠和更强的免疫系统)”可知,前文提到错误说法:从事爱好是自我放纵甚至是浪费时间,而后文却举例说明爱好对健康的好处。由此可知,G. In fact, nearly all hobbies can provide measurable health benefits, which differ by activity.(事实上,几乎所有的爱好都能提供可衡量的健康益处,这因活动而异)符合语境,反驳了上文,说明爱好能带来健康益处,同时下文的多个例子也与G选项中的“which differ by activity”相对应。故选G项。
【18题详解】
根据上文“In addition to providing health protection, hobbies improve our ability of the brain’s neural networks to change, adapt and make new connections, which can help you in areas beyond just one particular skill.(除了提供健康保护外,爱好还能提高我们大脑神经网络的改变、适应和建立新联系的能力,这可以帮助你在某一特定技能之外的领域)”可知,本段强调爱好对大脑能力提升以及在多方面产生积极影响。由此可知,E. This may be why people who play a musical instrument often do better in math.(这可能就是为什么演奏乐器的人通常在数学方面做得更好) 符合语境,通过具体例子(演奏乐器与数学成绩的关系)说明爱好对其他能力的迁移作用,进一步说明本段主题。故选E项。
【19题详解】
该题为段首句,应概括下文内容。根据下文“Hobbies are a perfect way to find a sense of community, make new friends and catch up with old ones. Many hobbies, like choir singing or team sports, are group-based. Even when you are not actively doing the hobby, activities like taking classes or joining online groups let us socialize.(业余爱好是找到社区意识、结交新朋友、和老朋友聊天的完美方式。许多爱好,如唱诗班或团队运动,都是基于群体的。即使你没有积极地从事这项爱好,像上课或加入网络小组这样的活动也能让我们社交)”可知,本段主要讲述了爱好在帮助人们建立社交联系、找到群体归属感方面的作用。由此可知,F. Perhaps the most underestimated benefit is hobbies’ impact on our social well-being.(也许最被低估的好处是爱好对我们社会幸福感的影响)符合语境,关键词social well-being概括下文。故选F项。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Most importantly, hobbies make us happier. Studies show that people who engage in hobbies daily are less stressed and more content. On a fundamental level, humans need meaning, something that gives them a sense of purpose.(最重要的是,爱好使我们更快乐。研究表明,每天从事业余爱好的人压力更小,更满足。从根本上说,人类需要意义,需要能给他们目的感的东西)”可知,爱好能使人快乐,人们生活需要有意义,目的感。由此可知,D. Being able to do what you’re passionate about really contributes to that.(能够做你热爱的事情确实有助于实现这一点)符合语境,热爱的事情指爱好,that指代前文提到的a sense of purpose,表明爱好能满足人们对意义和目标感的需求。故选D项。

A proud young man was constantly on the hunt for a new and exciting pastime. One day, he heard some folks chatting about the amazing experiences of hiking in the national parks. The idea of exploring the great outdoors filled him with enthusiasm, and he immediately decided to give it a go himself.
As he set off on his walk, feeling confident and full of energy, an old man with a weather-beaten face walked up to him. The old man’s eyes were filled with concern as he said, “Don’t go this way. Beware! The paths here are not clearly marked. It’s so easy to get lost in these woods.”
But the young man just laughed at the old man’s words. He stood up straight, held his head high, and said proudly, “I’ve studied maps of this area in great detail. I have a good knowledge of these trails. There’s no way that I’ll get lost.”
The old man listened patiently to the young man’s words. Then, with a sigh, he warned him about his pride. “I’ve walked these trails my entire life,” he said calmly. “If you think you’ll be safe, then go ahead.”
The young man simply rolled his eyes and paid no attention to the old man. He started along the trail, and every time he came to a place where he could choose between an easy or a difficult route, he always went for the more challenging one. Also, he was so busy showing off his courage that he didn’t notice which direction he was going.
After a while, he decided it was time to head back home. But because his path through the woods had been so winding and indirect, he had no idea where he really was. He took out his map, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t figure out his position. He walked from one path to another, but soon realized he was completely lost.

【答案】参考范文
Possible Version 1:
The sun was going down, and sudden strong winds suggested that it might rain. Panic started to well up inside the young man. His initial pride had completely vanished, replaced by a deep sense of fear. The once-challenging trails now seemed like a maze that he could never escape from. He huddled under a tree, cursing his stubbornness. Suddenly, he heard a faint voice calling his name. Through the rain and the darkness, he saw a figure approaching. It was the old man! The old man had come to rescue him, despite the young man’s earlier rudeness. With a kind look on his face, the old man led the young man out of the woods, step by step.
When he arrived home, he knew that he was lucky to be alive. He was filled with shame and regret for not listening to the old man’s advice. His pride had almost cost him his life. He sat in front of the fireplace, trying to warm his freezing body, and his mind was filled with thoughts of the old man’s warning. From that day on, the young man changed. He no longer boasted about his knowledge and skills. Instead, he listened carefully to others’ advice and learned from their experiences. And he still often went hiking in the national parks, but this time, he always made sure to be well-prepared and to respect the power of nature.
Possible Version 2
The sun was going down, and sudden strong winds suggested that it might rain. The young man felt a cold fear rise within him. The woods, once exciting, now seemed dark and threatening. He tripped over roots in the fading light, his confidence gone. Rain began to fall, mixing with the sweat on his face. Just as he was about to give up, he saw a faint, old signpost almost covered by plants. Remembering the old man’s warning, he felt deep regret. He decided to follow the path the sign pointed to. After what felt like hours of hurrying through the slippery mud, he saw a light in the distance. It was the old man, holding a lantern and waiting for him at the edge of the forest.
When he arrived home, he knew that he was lucky to be alive. Sitting by the fire, warm and dry, he thought about his foolish pride. The old man had not said “I told you so,” but had simply guided him back. The young man realized that true knowledge wasn’t from maps, but from experience and humility. From that day on, he changed his attitude. He started listening more to others, especially those with more experience. He often returned to those woods, not to prove himself, but to truly learn and appreciate their beauty and dangers. The forest had not just tested his navigation skills; it had reshaped his character.

B. Jake Pinnick missed Kewanee while studying in China.
C. Jake Pinnick found a new home and purpose in Wudang.
D Jake Pinnick pursued acting in Hollywood after Kungfu training.

Young sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.
Harmer a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
A. Tracking. B. Fastening.
C. Growing. D. Searching.
C To avoid being damaged by strong sunlight.
D

How Hobbies Help Us
Far from a waste of time, pastimes are good for body, brain and spirit.
