Few years ago, visitors couldn’t see much because our gardens were small and only had flowers. But now we’ve made big changes. We use sunny fields to grow vegetables like tomatoes and carrots all year.
During the tour, you’ll see these fields under bright sunlight, which helps the plants grow strong.
Many people think we use lamps indoors, but no, it’s all natural light outside. You’ll also taste some fresh snacks we make from the harvest.
Though drinks aren’t included, bring your own water. Next week we’re starting a bird watching event by the lake. It’s a fun way to see local birds, not fish like some asked about. So enjoy the tour, try the snacks and come back for the birds.

The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show uneasiness or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as uncomfortable. Therefore, they attempt to fill every gap. People in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating, as traditional Chinese and Thai people do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied (暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people. For example, Russian, French and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients experience. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing (治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to help patients.
28. What can we learn about silence in conversations from Paragraph 1?

Mr Jackson was a well-respected teacher in their small town. He had always paid much attention to his students, especially the ones who needed help. When he noticed that one of his students, Emily, was not getting on the school bus with all the other children and that her exam results had dropped a bit, he became worried.
One day, he decided to follow her and was surprised when he saw her walking towards an old factory building. He parked his car a few blocks away from the factory and waited for Emily to enter. After a few minutes, he carefully moved toward the building, his heart racing with each step.
As he entered the dark and dirty inside of the building, his mind was flooded with a sense of pity. Then he saw Emily sitting on the floor, surrounded(包围) by her textbooks and notebooks.
“Emily, what are you doing here?” Mr Jackson asked, surprised.
Emily looked up and was surprised to see her teacher. She said, “Oh, Mr Jackson! I came here to do my homework. It’s quiet here, and I feel safe.”
“Why don’t you go home?” he asked, his concern(担忧) growing.
“I live with my mother. Recently, my mother lost her job and we haven’t found a house yet,” she replied. “And my father used to work here, so it’s a familiar place to me.”
Mr Jackson was heartbroken to hear this. He knew he had to do something to help Emily. He sat down beside Emily and asked her to tell him everything that was going on.
Emily shared stories about her father, who had passed away a few years before. She talked about how her mother had struggled(努力) to make ends meet.
Mr Jackson listened carefully. The more he knew about Emily, the more he realized that being a teacher was not only about teaching subjects, it was also about shaping young minds and making a difference to their lives. He decided to take action.

Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place: If Louis could find his “Way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?”
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs.Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to ‘me the next day-. with an “A”on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words:. “See what you can do when you keep trying?”

Other cultures may use silence in other ways particularly when dealing with conflicts among people.
A. It varies with culture.
B. It is a sign of boredom.
C. It improves friendship.
D. It is used to show anger.
29. Which of the following groups might use silence to show agreement?
A. The Chinese. B. The Thais. C. The Mexicans. D. The Russians.
30. What should nurses do about silence according to the text?
A. Break it as soon as possible.
B. Let it go as the patients please.
C. Use its value to help patients.
D. Explain its harm to their patients.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Usages of Silence
B. Different Meanings of Silence
C. Sounds and Silence
D. Silence Is Gold in Some Cultures

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life.
Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom. They want and need to have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study some subjects if they did not have to.
