Many people consider Bao Zheng a genius official in Chinese history. One day, Bao Zheng saw a boy crying sadly in the street. He asked the boy what happened. The poor boy told Bao Zheng that he sold fried snacks for a living. Today, he made 100 coins from hard work and was going to buy his sick mother some medicine with the money on his way. As he worked for the whole morning, he felt tired and fell asleep beside a rock. Unfortunately, he found that all his coins in the basket disappeared when he woke up.
After hearing this, Bao Zheng thought for a moment and said, “I see. Surely, it was this rock that stole your money. I’ll question it and help you get your money back.” Everyone around them thought this was very strange and watched excitedly. Bao Zheng said to the rock, “Rock, rock, was it you that stole the child’s coins?” The rock didn’t reply, of course. Bao Zheng got mad and shouted angrily, “Rock, rock, tell the truth, or I’ll beat you!”
The people around laughed and talked secretly, “How can a rock steal money?” “How can a rock speak?” “Everyone says that Bao Zheng is smart, but he looks like a fool to me!” Bao Zheng heard all these and felt very annoyed, so he shouted at these people, “How dare you say bad things behind me! Now I’m going to ask for coins from each of you!” Bao Zheng ordered his men to bring him a pot of water, and asked these people to throw their coins into it.
Suddenly, when one man put his coin into the pot, Bao Zheng ordered his men to catch him. “You are the thief!” Bao Zheng continued to explain calmly, “Look, when this man dropped a coin into the pot, some oil floated on the water. Only a fried snack seller carries coins with oil on them, so there is no doubt that this man has stolen the coins from the sleeping child.”

Oil, also called petroleum, comes from two Latin words meaning “rock oil” as it’s under the rocks in the Earth. Big machines make holes to find it and pump it up. Then it’s sent to a factory where it’s separated into useful products.
Hundreds of important products are made from oil. Asphalt for roads, plastics, some medicines, and makeup are examples. We depend on oil for many things.
A lot of oil is made into fuel (燃料). Fuel is burned for heat or power. Gasoline is a fuel that your family probably uses every day. Your car’s engine burns gasoline to get the power to run. Heating oil and natural gas are fuels we use for cooking and to heat our homes. Jet airplanes run on jet fuel, which is also made from oil.
But there are two big problems with using oil. First, we’re using up the oil that’s under the ground of our planet. It takes millions of years for oil to form, but we’re using it up much faster than it can be replaced. Second, the fuels made from oil cause a lot of pollution. When we burn these fuels, they produce a lot of unwanted gases. We need to find other ways to heat our homes and power our cars.
Scientists are working on some new fuels. They’ve learned to use the energy from the sun and wind to make power. They’ve also found ways to make fuels from corn and other plants. These fuels don’t produce much pollution and they’re renewable, which means we can make more of them. Hopefully, it won’t be long before we can all use these cleaner sources of energy.
33.What fuel can oil be made into according to the passage?
A.Gasoline. B.Plastics. C.Medicines. D.Makeup.
34.Which is NOT the reason why people need new fuels?
A.People are using up the oil. B.Oil takes long time to form.
C.Oil causes environment problems. D.People pump oil from rocks in the Earth.
35.How can people balance the use of oil and the protection of the environment according to the passage?
A.By finding new oil fields. B.By finding renewable fuels.
C.By growing more plants. D.By reducing the use of oil.
36.Where can people probably find this passage?
A.A science fiction novel about future energy.
B.A popular news website reporting global events.
C.A science magazine explaining energy and resources.
D.A children’s storybook teaching lessons about nature.
D
Heading outside after dark and recording how many stars you can see. Watching for how many little birds are born in your yard. Spending a day counting all the butterflies in a local park. What do these activities have in common? They are all examples of citizen science projects. Read on to learn more about what citizen science is and what you can do.
Citizen scientists are ordinary people who volunteer to collect data (数据) or watch closely for possible problems. Then they report their findings back to research groups. This allows scientists to get lots of data from around the country and the world so that they can better understand animals, nature and more. Today most of these projects provide training on how to help and encourage volunteers to upload their findings on their websites or apps. Below we have included some of the great ideas you can consider.
You can try the Bird Count project. Groups of citizen scientists come together and count all the birds they see to help scientists learn more about bird travel patterns. You can also choose the Water Monitor project which will teach you how to test water for pH, temperature and turbidity (浊度). Your findings will help scientists better understand the state of the world’s water. Besides, you can join the Frog Watch to keep a close eye on wetland frog populations. With the information you provide, scientists will learn about the frog populations and find endangered frog types early. Finally, the Online Galaxy project lets you look at star photos taken by the space telescope (望远镜) and group them by shape. In this way, scientists can learn more about how the stars have changed over time.
Once you have found a research project, ask your parents to help you look through the website or app to see how to get started. In some cases, you might need to watch online videos to learn more about what the researchers want you to do. They might also send you a packet of information to help you. Closely follow the instructions and enjoy the wonderful world of science.
37.How does the writer introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving examples.
C.By explaining reasons. D.By comparing differences.
38.What are the requirements to be a citizen scientist?
①providing data for scientific research
②discussing possible problems with scientists
③being prepared to take part because of interest
④travelling around the world to collect information
A.①④ B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
39.What do we know about the four projects mentioned in the text?
A.Bird Count members look for endangered bird types.
B.Online Galaxy members take photos of the night sky.
C.Water Monitor members study water quantity together.
D.Frog Watch members watch frog number changes closely.
40.Where can we most probably read the passage?
A.A science magazine for kids. B.A science post by researchers.
C.A science handbook for parents. D.A science report by voluntary groups.
第二节 阅读填空(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
阅读短文及文后A〜E选项,选出可以填入41〜45各题空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑
Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. 41
To deal with this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. 42 However, the food itself is not the main reason. According to a scientific research, part of the reason is that at high altitude (海拔) we cannot taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. 43 So our taste buds become senseless. The sad fact, however, is that our noses don’t know it. 44 They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.
Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.
45 Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure. So making food taste good is still hard for them.
A.Though scientists try their best, things are not as easy as they thought.
B.They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.
C.But it is common that the food taste is considered to be bad.
D.All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad.
E.As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces one third of our taste buds.

Thanks to Bao Zheng, the boy got his money back. Everyone said that Bao Zheng was a really wise man.
