You must have read or heard of the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, which is from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions written by Cao Xueqin. But can you imagine two people singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Recently, the novel has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan. It is welcomed by audiences (观众) at home and abroad.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters (章) and hundreds of characters. But the opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin instead of the rise and fall of the Jia family and tried to write a heart-breaking tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director, Timmy Yip, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her.
It isn’t the first time that they have made an opera adapted (改编) from Chinese literature. The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences, spreading Chinese culture to the world. They are happy to have made a contribution (贡献) to the land where their parents were born.
14.What do we know about A Dream of Red Mansions?
A.It is long and there are many different characters.

C.It is a classic Chinese opera known all over the world.
D.It tells a love story between Jia and Lin with a happy ending.
15.In which sentence does the word “land” have the same meaning as the underlined one?
A.The land was dry and hard after the long and hot summer.

C.As a plane fan, he often goes to see planes land and take off.
D.Those heroes help people in danger and protect their land in time.
16.What do the creators of the opera think of their job according to the passage?
A.Tiring and boring. B.Satisfying and meaningful.

One of the best parts of autumn is its beautiful colors. Normally green leaves turn into orange, yellow, red and finally brown. This is called “leaf phenology”, and many people look forward to it every year. However, because of climate change, autumn is changing.
According to a study that came out earlier this year, the season length is growing. It is taking longer for leaves to change their colors. And this is not the only way that climate change is ruining the season.
“Trees are holding onto their leaves longer,” explained Dr. Diamond, a senior climate scientist. “In my own neighborhood, I can remember that the leaves would drop a lot sooner 20 years ago than they do now. This is a personal experience, but research actually supports what we’re seeing.”
Climate change isn’t just causing the leaves to change later. We can also expect later frosts (霜) according to Dr. Mann, a professor of the University of Pennsylvania. Mann said, “That means pests stay active for a longer time in autumn, leading to a greater health risk to human beings.”
If there is any good news at all, though, we may be able to slow down this development. Mann pointed out that if humans limited the carbon emissions (限制碳排放), they could still stop the worst effects (影响) of climate change from hitting them during the autumn months. “A new study recently suggests that surface warming will possibly stop after carbon emissions reach zero,” Mann noted in Live Science recently.
Autumn is such a wonderful season—whether it’s the golden leaves covering the grasslands in North China or the ginkgo trees (银杏树) dropping their yellow leaves in our schoolyard, it’s a gift we should keep. The beautiful autumn we protect today may be the sweet memory we will hold tomorrow.

23.What does the word “ruin” most likely mean in the passage?
A.Cause damage. B.Improve greatly.
C.Become more colorful. D.Change completely.

A.The beautiful autumn scenery in people’s lives.
B.Dr. Diamond’s memories of the autumn before.
C.The autumn changes because of climate change.
D.Dr. Mann’s advice on stopping carbon emissions.
25.What’s the purpose of the passage?

D.To explain the research about leaf phenology.

There are some things that we don’t often think about, like walking, because there really is no need to. There are other things we don’t often think about, like learning, but we should.
26 However, many of us have no real idea what the best way to learn is. So a group of scientists in the USA interviewed some excellent students to find some answers. 27
Almost all students re-read when they are trying to learn new information. But if you read something again right after you finish learning it, there is almost no use. 28
Self-testing is one of the best ways of remembering new things. 29 You can just answer questions and see the answers at the back of a book, or you can ask and answer questions with a friend.
Many students underline (标记) things when they are reading something for the first time or when they don’t really know if it is important or not. But this doesn’t help much with learning.
30 It is much better to try and learn less at one time and study it a few days later.

The scientists gave the fish food through 48 special needle (针). Such a closed-loop (闭合环路的) ecosystem is 49 (importance) for future studies in space. It 50 (mean) that plants and animals can live in space more simply. The scientists also found that the zebrafish’s behaviour (行为) in space was different 51 that on earth. They often swam on their backs. That’s because the low gravity (重力) in space made it possible.
On earth, gravity pulls everything to the earth’s centre, and animals can find their way 52 (easy). Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become much 53 (strong).
Humans and zebrafish share 70% of the same genes (基因). So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health.

根据“In a space study on zebrafish, Chinese scientists have set a new record. They… four zebrafish live and grow in a closed water world.” 故填made。
根据“The zebrafish went to China’s space station on the Shenzhou XVIII spaceship on 25 April. … grew up and had… babies in 43 days.” 故填They。
根据“They grew up and had… babies in 43 days.” 故填their。
根据“So… did the special closed environment work?” 故填how。
根据“The scientists gave the fish food through… special needle”可知,句中此处表示“一个”特殊的针管,是泛指,“special”是以辅音音素开头的单词,所以用不定冠词“a”。故填a。
根据“Such a closed-loop ecosystem is… for future studies in space.”
根据“It… that plants and animals can live in space more simply.”
根据“The scientists also found that the zebrafish’s behavior in space was different… that on earth.” 故填from。
根据“On earth, gravity pulls everything to earth’s center, and animals can find their way….”
根据“Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become much… .”

Huang Xuhua had a childhood dream: he wanted to study medicine and save people. His parents were both doctors, and their work made him want to do medical research too. But in 1940, there was a war. Huang had to go to different cities for middle school. This made him change his mind—he decided to study science instead.
In 1945, Huang went to National Chiao Tung University to learn ship building. After four years’ learning, he became a ship-building engineer. In the late 1950s, China planned to make its own nuclear submarines (核潜艇). Huang was picked to join the research team.

22.Which is the effect of climate change on autumn?
A.The season length is becoming shorter. B.Leaves are changing their colors and falling later.
C.There are more frosts in autumn. D.Pests are no longer active.
23.What does the word “ruin” most likely mean in the passage?
A.Cause damage. B.Improve greatly.
C.Become more colorful. D.Change completely.
24.What does the underlined phrase “this development” refer to?
A.The beautiful autumn scenery in people’s lives.
B.Dr. Diamond’s memories of the autumn before.
C.The autumn changes because of climate change.
D.Dr. Mann’s advice on stopping carbon emissions.
25.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To call for actions against climate change.
B.To describe the beautiful colors of autumn.
C.To talk about the effects of autumn changes.

A.Here are their findings.
B.Some people already know the best way to learn.
C.The answers are very helpful to improve your reading.
D.It’s also not a good way to spend hours learning without stopping.
E.The way works best if you re-read something about four days after you first learned it.
F.It is quick and easy and works well.
G.All through our lives, we are learning new things.
