Many people still believe that fans of horror films are strange individuals who enjoy danger or pain. They are often described as cold and 1 . Some film critics have even claimed that those who create or watch horror movies must have something wrong with their minds. For a long time, this view 2 the common idea that horror lovers simply seek strong sensations or lack empathy (同理心). Yet recent research has begun to present a more 3 picture of who these fans really are.
Earlier studies often 4 true horror fans with people who liked violent scenes. One famous report from 2007 suggested that horror fans showed lower empathy than others. Later scientists, 5 , noticed that several studies in that report used unpleasant scenes of violence or killing without any clear ending or meaning. Such examples were not real horror stories but short pictures of suffering. When these studies were 6 , the connection between horror enjoyment and low empathy almost disappeared.
Recent investigations have used standard tests to 7 empathy and kindness more carefully. The results showed no evidence that horror fans are less kind or caring. In certain areas, they even scored higher than average. Many horror lovers enjoy these films not because they 8 pain, but because they find emotion, meaning, and even beauty in stories about fear and survival. Horror gives them a safe space to 9 feelings that people usually avoid in daily life.
Still, horror fans are far from one single 10 . When researchers studied people visiting horror events, they discovered three main groups. The first, often called “adrenaline seekers,” truly enjoy the 11 feeling of fear — the fast heartbeat and rush of energy that come with it. The second, named “white knucklers,” feel scared but use horror to face that 12 . The third, “dark copers,” watch horror to deal with sad or stressful emotions from real life.
Across these groups, one 13 quality appeared again and again: curiosity. Horror fans often show morbid curiosity — the wish to investigate death, danger, or other frightening ideas in a safe setting. Studies suggest that such curiosity can help people stay calm in crises and manage stress more effectively. Horror, therefore, can serve as a kind of emotional training ground that 14 the mind for real challenges.
Horror fans, then, are not cold or strange. They are thoughtful, curious, and emotionally strong. Their 15 in scary stories reflects the remarkable human ability to learn and grow while facing their deepest fears.

Deaf people should enjoy a play as much as the hearing audience. This is the thinking behind the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires that theaters become 1 to deaf people. Theatre producers, meanwhile, are beginning to realize that such a feature makes their product attractive to a wider audience.
Theatre interpretation is a 2 project and the workload is immense. Consider that each actor in the play has about four weeks to rehearse his or her lines; interpreters have to learn the whole play in as much time. And, when interpreting musicals, where timing, rhythm and harmonies must be practiced, the 3 doubles.
The most important technical aspect of theatre interpretation for the deaf is the 4 of the interpreter. Placement strategies can be categorized into three styles: “placed”, where interpreters are located outside the acting space and do not move; “zoned”, where interpreters are within the acting space, but usually move only during the 5 of scene or act; and, finally, “shadowed”, where interpreters move 6 within the acting space, shadowing the movement of the actors for whom they are interpreting.
The “placed” style of interpreting in the theatre is by far the most common. The interpreters are side-by-side and face the audience. The location of the interpreter is generally 7 three places: stage right or stage left, or on the floor of the house.
The “zoned” style of interpreting is a happy 8 between the “placed” and “shadowed” styles. Here, interpreters are placed side-by-side within acting space. Usually, they change position on stage from scene to scene — or from act to act — in order to be within the same “zone” as the majority of the action. Zone placement, 9 , makes it easier for the deaf patron to see the interpreters and actors at the same time.
The “shadowed” style of interpreting is the most 10 style of interpreting for the theater. It involves placing the interpreters directly within the action — nearly making them “sign language actors”. The interpreters are “blocked” into each scene, and literally 11 the actors. So clear is the 174 of doing this that the interpreter is in such close proximity to the actor that the deaf patron need not make a decision about whom to watch — he or she can watch both at the same time. In the best of cases, the deaf patron mentally 12 the interpreter with the actor, and forgets that the actor does not sign.
Theatre interpreters for the 13 are dedicated professionals who take great pride in their work. Theatre is the art of communicating beautiful ideas in interesting ways. Interpreted theater, therefore, is an art in itself. Thankfully, instead of seeing us as “ 14 ”, producers nowadays think of interpreters for the deaf as a new avenue to creativity.
