Traffic jam is a serious problem in cities worldwide. Besides making people spend more time on their way to work and go home, it has other effects. It causes stress to drivers, which may lead to health problems or road rage (路怒). And sometimes the products cannot be delivered (运输) on time. Some emergency services can become caught in traffic and are, therefore, unable to get to an emergency in time. Finally, traffic jam is bad for the environment. Traffic jam wastes fuel (燃料),which in turn produces more green house gases like CO2.
Then how to solve it? One common way is engineering. This means building more and wider roads, as well as tunnels (隧道) and bridges. However, the costs for engineering are very high. Another problem is that more roads may actually result in more traffic. In short, engineering solutions have both advantages and disadvantages.
A more popular way, therefore, would be to use other forms of transport more, like cycling and underground trains. Although cycling is good for health and does not pollute the air, it is not practical in every climate and can be dangerous in heavy traffic.
Another way is to encourage people to use buses. A good choice is a park and ride system which allows people to drive to some places near cities, parks, and then take a bus to the city centre. This reduces traffic jam in the centre of the city. But many buses do not run at night. It is not convenient for people who work till late night.
In a word, cities are using a variety of methods to solve the problem of traffic jam. We hope in the near future this problem can be solved completely.

A.The narrow roads they are now on. B.The stress caused by the traffic jam.
C.They can’t get to where they want on time. D.They can’t get the emergency service.

C.The increasing number of traffic. D.Some opinions on traffic jam.
34.What are the disadvantages of the engineering solutions to traffic jam?
①It may result in more traffic. ②It takes a long time.
③It costs a lot. ④It affects the environment.
A.①② B.①③ C.②③ D.①④
35.Why is building the park and ride system a good choice?
A.It reduces traffic jam in the centre of the city.
B.People can get home more conveniently at night.
C.It can reduce the green house gases made by cars.
D.It can make cycling less dangerous in heavy traffic.

Thanks to the hard work of companies like Californiabased Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to provide a chance for space visitors to “get out of the world” by checking into the world’s first true hotel in low Earth orbit (轨道).
The Voyager Space Station (VSS) will be made up of two rings. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms and scientific research labs. The hotel which is powered by the Sun will travel at high speed to create artificial (人造的) gravity, providing tourists with a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people.
Though the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will cost time and money. Moving the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too high, it is cheap compared to the 55 million it costs to stay on the ISS (International Space Station). Besides, guests at the VSS will be living in the greatest conditions (环境).
“You’re going to have the top cooks,” OCA CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. “There’ll be two shows every night as well.” Visitors will also be able to take part in the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allow visitors to admire views of the Earth and space.
If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first visitors in 2027.
36.What do we know about the Voyager Space Station?
A.It will be powered by electricity. B.It will be made up of two squares.
C.It can provide relaxing living conditions. D.It can travel fast to get away from Earth’s gravity.
37.What does the underlined word “recoup” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Pay off. B.Give away. C.Get back. D.Use up.
38.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Moving the VSS to space will cost much money.
B.There will be labs in the inside circle of the VSS.
C.The VSS plans to welcome the first visitors in 2026.
D.The VSS will have rooms for no less than 400 people.
39.Why are John Blincow’s words mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To speak highly of the hard work of ISS. B.To show the highend service of the VSS.
C.To stress the importance of exploring space. D.To describe what life will be like in the future.
40.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.It costs lots of time and money to travel to space.

The Green Guardians: A New Trend in China
With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, waste sorting (分类) has become a “new fashion” among teenagers in China. A survey by CCTV shows that about 80% of middle school students now actively help with sorting waste at home, and many have even created creative ways to tell people about it in their communities.
As a Grade 9 student in Shijiazhuang, Li Hua is one of these “green guardian”. Every weekend, he uses recycled materials to make colorful posters about waste sorting and posts them in the neighborhood. “I want to turn boring rules into interesting messages,” said Li. His efforts paid off—the recycling rate (比率) in his community increased by 40% last month.
Scientists have found that proper waste sorting can reduce pollution by 30% and create valuable resources. For example, one ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees. However, challenges remain. A recent study shows that 60% of teenagers find it hard to recognize different types of packaging materials.
The Chinese government plans to build 50,000 smart waste stations nationwide by 2025. These stations use AI technology to automatically sort waste and reward citizens with “green points” that can be exchanged for cheaper prices at local stores.
41.How many middle school students take part in waste sorting at home according to the survey by CCTV?
42.Why does Li Hua use recycled materials for his posters?
43.What problem do many teenagers still face according to Paragraph 3?
44.How do the smart waste stations sort waste?
45.What do you think of Li Hua’s efforts? As a student, what can you do to protect the environment in your daily life? (答案须与文中不同)
