The title of “Aaron’s younger brother” was given to me at the age of six. It was a label stuck to me and all people had to do was to refer to the imaginary label and they would know how to address me. I wanted to defeat Aaron, whose fame had reduced me to a nameless tennis player. Then the day eventually approached.
As I shook Aaron's hand at the start of the match, I stared at him with determination. “I’m going to beat you today.” I gathered the confidence to claim over the outcome of the match. Aaron laughed carelessly as he turned his back towards me. For a brief moment, I regretted that display of over-confidence.
I nervously shifted my weight from one foot to the other. The tennis court seemed to stretch out further than usual. My sweaty hands tightened around my racket (球拍) — the fifth one passed down to me from Aaron. We entered into a heated fight. I was persevering as expected, and I was not sure how long it would take before I withdrew. We were down to the last round, neck and neck in points. I made a mistake, then Aaron leaped up, stretching his arm out. The sun cast his image over me, reminding me that I would always be walking in his shadow if I couldn’t prove myself.
I readied myself for the finishing blow, images of Aaron’s past matches flooding through my mind. I recalled the habit of his hit in the World Tennis Tournament, extending my arm to the left in anticipation of where the ball was going to land. The ball made contact with my racket and was lobbed(吊高球) over Aaron’s head. He could do nothing but witness his undefeated status being erased by his younger brother.
While I was still enjoying the unfamiliar feeling of victory, a man whom I recognised from a professional club approached me. “What is your name, son?” he asked. A smile spread across my face.
24. What used to trouble the writer?
A. The longing for recognition. B. The eagerness to bear labels.
C. The desire to be a tennis player. D. The hardship of physical training.
25. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the match?
A. Defeated. B. Anxious. C. Optimistic. D. Honored.
26. What can we learn about Aaron from paragraph 4?
A. He adopted his usual trick in the match.
B. He purchased a tennis racket for the writer.
C. He had an obvious advantage in the last round.
D. He withdrew from the World Tennis Tournament.
27. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Price for One Mistake B. From Nobody to Somebody
C. Why Brotherhood Matters D. Aaron's Last-minute Victory
C
Suppose you come across two doctors. One is handsome while the other looks plain. Who would you trust with your surgery? Most people would probably want to get treated by the handsome one. And most people are likely to be wrong about that.
When you look at the sun, you sometimes see it clearly. But sometimes you’ll see it shining way bigger than its actual shape. That circle of light called a halo makes it look bigger. This effect, known as the halo effect, also happens when a person, product, or company shines like the sun. Then we don’t see them clearly and associate all sorts of unrelated qualities to them.
The halo effect was once studied by the psychologist Edward Thorndike, who asked flight commanders to evaluate their pilots in various distinct aspects such as physical appearance, intelligence, and leadership. He found that the pilots who got high scores for their physical appearance, also got rated high on intelligence and leadership skills — a link that seemed wrong. It appears that the commanders were unable to evaluate specific qualities independently of others. They thought of their pilots in broad terms, either “good” or “bad”, and allowed this general feeling to influence the specific qualities they credited to their pilots. Some pilots profited from their halo.
The halo effect also explains why some teachers give better-looking students higher grades. One study looked at the grades of 4,500 pupils, who were sorted by volunteers into three groups: below-average, average, and above-average looking. The researchers then compared students’ grades between classes taken in conventional classrooms with those taken online where there was no face-to-face interaction. The researchers found that students who were rated as good-looking earned significantly lower grades in online courses compared to conventional classrooms.
Since the physical appearance of good-looking people seems to naturally make them also appear intelligent, strong, and trustworthy, here is one good rule. If you meet with an accident and have to choose between two equally qualified doctors, ignore their halo and choose the less handsome one. He might have worked twice as hard to gain the same reputation and is likely better at his job.
28.What is the purpose of the second paragraph?
A.To explore a natural wonder.
B.To spread scientific knowledge.
C.To explain a psychological tendency.
D.To interpret social rules at the workplace.
29.How did the commanders tend to evaluate their pilots in Thorndike’s study?
A.In a general way. B.With common sense.
C.From a specific aspect. D.By an objective criterion.
30.What does the 4,500-pupil study find about better-looking students?
A.They were fairly treated by their teachers.
B.They were less attentive in online courses.
C.They probably had natural learning abilities.
D.They were overvalued in conventional classes.
31.What can be learned about the halo effect?
A.It relieves appearance anxiety.
B.It leads to inaccurate judgments.
C.It causes trust crisis among people.
D.It intensifies workplace competition.
D
The concentric circles (同心圆状斑点), also known as eyespots on butterfly, not only look like real eyes but may also appear to glare directly at predators (捕食者) from many directions, scientists have found. This visual illusion, called the “Mona Lisa effect”, could scare would-be attackers and buy the insects enough time to escape.
Scientists suspect that eyespots, with dark “pupils (瞳孔)” in the center look like real eyes to predators. Hannah Rowland, an ecologist at the Max Planck Institute wanted to see if the direction of this fake gaze contributed to the effect.
First, Rowland and her co-author trained chicks to attack a worm hidden behind a paper printout of two eyespots at the end of a path. When the eyespots’ pupils were specifically pointed in the chicks’ direction, the birds repeatedly ran toward the paper and then backed away, and they waited a few minutes before attacking. But when the pupils instead appeared to look away from the direction of the chicks’ approach, the birds attacked in seconds. Centrally located pupils, though not as effective as ones that stared directly at the chicks, resulted in longer delays than pupils that looked the other way.
“This suggests that they really are paying attention to the direction of the pupils in the eyespots and are perceiving them as eyelike stimulation. The concentric eyespots found most often in the insect world may seem to the chicks like a pair of eyes that follow them regardless of approach angle,” says Rowland.
National University of Singapore evolutionary biologist Antonia Monteiro, who was not involved in the research, says the study is a “cool” demonstration of an evolutionary theory for eyespots. “These butterflies can be encountered from all angles, so having the pupil centrally located ends up being pretty good,” Monteiro says. Still, she says, the eyespots used in the study were several millimeters larger than even the largest commonly found in nature, raising the possibility that the chicks may have been extra frightened by the size of the paper eyes.
32. What is the function of eyespots on the butterfly?
A. Making them look more beautiful. B. Spotting potential dangers.
C. Helping them identify the direction. D. Protecting them from being attacked.
33. How did the chicks react when shown the specifically-pointed eyespots?
A. They attacked immediately. B. They turned away in seconds.
C. They reacted cautiously. D. They became very excited.
34. What does Monteiro mean in the last paragraph?
A. The eyespot is a butterfly’s powerful weapon.
B. The experiment needs further proof.
C. The study first proposes an evolutionary theory of eyespots.
D. Butterflies in nature have small eyespots.
35. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To appeal to readers to preserve butterflies.
B. To uncover the hidden biological secret of butterflies.
C. To analyze the social behaviour of butterflies.
D. To demonstrate the evolutionary theory for eyespots.

With climate change continuing to worsen, our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious. ____36____ Is it right? Maybe not.
Techno-optimism can be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems. This definition reinforces (强化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive (能源集中型) lifestyle. All society needs to do is look to green technology to work its magic. ____37____
One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by mid-century. ____38____ Techno-optimism has led many to believe that if everyone just switched to driving electric vehicles, we would be making incredible steps towards sustainability. However, the reality is that the amount of resources and energy needed to produce enough electric vehicles for everyone is not even remotely sustainable.
____39____ Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing fewer cars. Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new technology, but be about changing the way our society functions.
Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute. Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints. ____40____ Until we are ready to face the need for a less complex life, we cannot make true progress towards sustainability.
A. People used to fall into this trap.
B. So where should we look for answers instead?
C. The modern world’s simple solution is technology.
D. Moreover, they are more energy-intensive to produce.
E. Unfortunately, this is an incredibly dangerous opinion to hold.

G. Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles.

Ms. Eleanor, a senior lady, lives by herself in an urban area. She is a lady with a warm smile and is known for her fondness of bookshops and her habitual walks through the city’s historical region.
One evening, as she was heading back to her home from a park, Ms. Eleanor suddenly realized that her purse was missing. She retraced her steps, searching every corner of the park. Her heart sank with each passing moment, as the purse contained a treasured photograph of her departed husband, which she carried as a precious treasure.
As the sun set, casting long shadows along the pavements, Ms. Eleanor felt an overwhelming sense of loss and hopelessness. In the meantime, a young man named Tom was walking home from her cherished job at the community library. As he passed by the bookshop which Ms. Eleanor had visited earlier that day, he spotted something nestled in the corner of the pavement. Interested, he picked it up and discovered it to be a well-worn leather purse. Tom opened the purse, seeking some identification to return it to its owner. It wasn’t long before he saw the cash and personal belongings inside. Recognizing the significance of what he held, he decided to wait at the spot where he found the purse, hoping that the owner would return to search for it.
As nightfall blanketed the city, Ms. Eleanor, with a heavy heart, headed back to her beloved bookshop to make her last attempt to get back her purse. Her pace was slow and weary, yet her determination was strong. As she drew near to the bookshop, she noticed a figure standing under a street lamp, hold something in his hands.
“Pardon me, young person. I was wondering if you happened to come across an old purse?” Ms. Eleanor inquired in a low tone. The young man’s face brightened and he was about to hand the purse to the elderly lady. However, he hesitated slightly because he wasn’t entirely certain that the purse actually belonged to the elderly lady.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad that you’re interested in my recent visit to the science exhibition and it’s my pleasure to share my experience with you.
The exhibition, featuring various smart inventions, such as driverless cars and smart-home devices gave visitors a glimpse into the life in the future. Especially impressive was a household robot that could interact with visitors in a remarkably considerate manner, which would make a perfect companion for the elder.
I’m pretty convinced that many of them will soon find their way into common households. Do you feel like paying a visit with me next time?
Yours,
Li Hua
Sensing the young man’s worry, Ms. Eleanor decided to confirm her ownership. She described the contents of the purse, mentioning the photograph of her late husband whom she cherished deeply. “It’s a small black and white picture, slightly worn at the edges, but it’s the most important thing.” she explained. Tom, moved by her words and the evident sorrow, handed the purse to the elderly woman. The lady was full of gratitude and asked him to accept the money in her purse for his good deed.
Tom said, “It’s my pleasure. Forget about the money.” As the whole incident progressed, a sense of relief and enlightenment enveloped him. Tom added, “It’s I who should be grateful. Your heartfelt thanks is more precious than any money. You’ve also taught me to value my beloved ones. Nice to know you, Ms. Eleanor.” With those words, Tom prepared to depart, his heart filled with a sense of accomplishment. Ms. Eleanor stood there, a satisfied smile emerging on her face as she viewed Tom’s departure, both having gained a sense of joy from their brief but meaningful interaction.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Sensing the young man’s worry, Ms. Eleanor decided to confirm her ownership.

He is a leader in the fashion world and influences its many trends. Today, we’re talking about the man behind the name, Giorgio Armani. At present, we recognize him as one of the world’s most famous fashion designers, but he was not always interested in this field. He was born in Italy, where he was raised with his brother and his sister. In high school, he was inspired to become a doctor, which led him to apply to the Department of Medicine at the University of Milan. He studied there for three years before deciding to join the army, where he was assigned to the military hospital in Verona. After that, he returned home to work at a men’s department store in Milan, and he became familiar with the marketing and designing aspects in clothing.
A friend there convinced him to open up his own design shop in 1973. Two years later, they released a clothing line under the name Giorgio Armani. He began designing women’s clothing. In 1979, he began producing clothing for the United States market. In the early 1980s, he was persuaded to create perfumes for L’Oreal. He also designed the uniforms for the Chelsea Football Club in England, as well as the Italian uniforms for the 2012 Olympics.

C 29. A 30. D 31. B
由文章第二段中“When you look at the sun, you sometimes see it clearly. (当你看太阳的时候,你有时会看得很清楚。但有时你会看到它比实际形状大得多。被称为光晕的光圈使它看起来更大。这种效应被称为光环效应,当一个人、产品或公司像太阳一样发光时也会发生。然后我们就看不清它们,把各种不相关的品质和它们联系在一起。)”可知,第二段的目的是解释一种心理倾向,即光环效应。故选C。
29.推理判断题。由文章第三段中“He found that the pilots who got high scores for their physical appearance, also got rated high on intelligence and leadership skills-a link that seemed wrong. It appears that the commanders were unable to evaluate specific qualities independently of others. They thought of their pilots in broad terms, either “good” or “bad”, and allowed this general feeling to influence the specific qualities they credited to their pilots. Some pilots profited from their halo. (他发现,那些在外貌上得分高的飞行员,在智力和领导能力上也得分高——这种联系似乎是错误的。看来指挥官们无法独立于他人来评价具体的品质。他们从广义上看待飞行员,要么“好”,要么“坏”,并让这种总体感觉影响他们认为飞行员具有的具体品质。一些飞行员从他们的光环中获利。)”可知,指挥官们倾向于用总体感觉来评估他们的飞行员。故选A。
由文章第四段中“The researchers found that students who were rated as good-looking earned significantly lower grades in online courses compared to conventional classrooms. (研究人员发现,与传统课堂相比,被评为长得好看的学生在网络课程上的成绩明显较低。)”可知,长相更好的学生在传统课堂被高估了。故选D。
31.推理判断题。由文章第二段中“This effect, known as the halo effect, also happens when a person, product, or company shines like the sun. Then we don’t see them clearly and associate all sorts of unrelated qualities to them. (这种效应被称为光环效应,当一个人、产品或公司像太阳一样发光时也会发生。然后我们就看不清它们,把各种不相关的品质和它们联系在一起。)”和第四段中“The researchers found that students who were rated as good-looking earned significantly lower grades in online courses compared to conventional classrooms. (研究人员发现,与传统课堂相比,被评为长得好看的学生在网络课程上的成绩明显较低。)”可知,光环效应会导致不准确的判断。故选B。

D 33. C 34. A 35. B
根据第一段第二句“This visual illusion, called the “Mona Lisa effect”, could scare would-be attackers and buy the insects enough time to escape.(这种视觉错觉被称为“蒙娜丽莎效应”,可以吓到潜在的攻击者,并为昆虫赢得足够的时间逃跑。)”
根据第三段第二句“When the eyespots’ pupils were specifically pointed in the chicks’ direction, the birds repeatedly ran toward the paper and then backed away, and they waited a few minutes before attacking.(当眼状斑点的瞳孔特别指向小鸟的方向时,这些鸟会反复朝纸跑去,然后后退,等几分钟再攻击。)”
根据最后一段第二句““These butterflies can be encountered from all angles, so having the pupil centrally located ends up being pretty good,” Monteiro says. Still, she says, the eyespots used in the study were several millimeters larger than even the largest commonly found in nature, raising the possibility that the chicks may have been extra frightened by the size of the paper eyes.(Monteiro说:“这些蝴蝶可以从任何角度看到,所以把瞳孔放在中心位置就很好了。”不过,她说,研究中使用的眼状斑点甚至比自然界中常见的最大斑点还要大几毫米,这增加了一种可能性,即雏鸟可能被纸眼睛的大小吓坏了。)”可知,生物学家Monteiro认为,这个类似瞳孔的图案形状是可以吓到雏鸟的,对蝴蝶来讲,可以起到有力的保护作用的。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是文章第一段的“ This visual illusion, called the “Mona Lisa effect”, could scare would-be attackers and buy the insects enough time to escape.(这种视觉错觉被称为“蒙娜丽莎效应”,可以吓到潜在的攻击者,并为昆虫赢得足够的时间逃跑。)”,最后一句“National University of Singapore evolutionary biologist Antonia Monteiro, who was not involved in the research, says the study is a “cool” demonstration of an evolutionary theory for eyespots.(新加坡国立大学的进化生物学家Antonia Monteiro没有参与这项研究,但他说这项研究是对眼状斑点进化理论的一个“很酷”的证明。)”

F. There is no doubt that we are heading towards a greener future.
G. Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles.
C 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. D

56.necessarily 57.is changed 58.to keep 59.to/into 60.Found 61.rulings 62.a 63.Preparing 64.that/which 65.fewer
故填is changed。
故填to keep。
故填to/into。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Sensing the young man’s worry, Ms. Eleanor decided to confirm her ownership.
