When I was a child in Montreal, the encyclopedia (百科全书) was the main way to get knowledge. I once wrote a report about snakes with the help of Encyclopedia Britannica. From it, I learned that the king cobra lives about 20 years and that its enemy is the mongoose. The pictures of those snakes are still clear in my memory. My dream at that time was to own a set of Britannica, though it seemed impossible with my pocket money.
Years later, in the 1980s, I finally had enough money. Wanting my children to enjoy what I had missed, I spent more than $2,000 on a complete Britannica. The day it arrived, I felt like I had won a great prize. I proudly placed the thirty volumes (册) on the shelf and opened them happily. At last, the knowledge I had longed for was mine.
But time changes everything. With the rise of the Internet, Britannica became unnecessary. As I began to downsize, I tried to pass the books to my grown children. They laughed and refused, comparing them to the old telephone booths (电话亭).
Then, I got in touch with some charities (慈善机构). They showed no interest in them, either. Sadly, I threw part of my childhood dream into the waste container. Watching those heavy books disappear made me sad.
Today, knowledge is at our fingertips through Google and other online tools. Yet when I found my old World Book, Bananas to Brains, I kept it. Torn and faded, it makes me remember the days when knowledge was hard to get, valuable, and deeply loved.
4. Why did the author buy Britannica in the 1980s?
A. To meet her children’s needs. B. To add to her collection.
C. To encourage her children to read books. D. To realize her childhood dream.
5. What did the author’s children think of Britannica?
A. Costly. B. Difficult. C. Useless. D. Valuable.
6. What did the author do with her Britannica set in the end?
A. She sold it at a low price. B. She gave it to charities.
C. She threw it away sadly. D. She passed it down to her children.
7. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. The End of a Knowledge Time B. The History of the Encyclopedia
C. Education in the Internet Age D. A Treasure Saved from Waste
C
When you think about your relationship with your parents, how would you describe it? Are you satisfied with it, or would you wish for something more? For many, the relationship with their parents is not perfect, and it may even feel distant (疏远的).
I once hoped that my parents would be my best friends—people I could talk to openly, share my thoughts with, and have meaningful discussions with. However, the reality was very different. Our relationship was often filled with shouting and misunderstandings. We hardly had calm, meaningful conversations. Instead, there were months when we didn’t talk at all because there was nothing to say.
For many years, from my teenage years to my late twenties, this was my reality. But things began to change when I decided to make an effort (努力) to improve the relationship. Now, at 30, my relationship with my parents has improved greatly. We communicate openly, without anger, and show concern for each other in a way that feels natural.
Improving the relationship with your parents takes time. It is not a quick fix. When I first started, my efforts and apology(道歉) seemed pointless. For example, when I tried to hold my mom into my arms, she pushed me away. My dad didn’t give me a love sign. But I didn’t give up. I realized that improving a relationship is not about fixing a single argument; it’s about repairing years of misunderstandings and miscommunications.
To truly improve your relationship with your parents, understand that it’s a long journey. It will not happen overnight, and you may not see results immediately. In my case, it took years of efforts. I had to show my parents that I had changed, not through words, but through actions. They slowly began to react (做出回应), but the process was slow and required patience.
So, if you’re facing problems with your parents, remember that it’s normal. Start by seeing the situation as a long journey. It may not be easy, but if you keep trying and give it time, your relationship can get better. Be patient and stick to the process.
8. What was the author’s early relationship with her parents like?
A. Terrible. B. Peaceful. C. Special. D. Close.
9. How did the author’s parents first react to her efforts?
A. They accepted them warmly. B. They paid little attention to them.
C. They were surprised and moved. D. They apologized for their misunderstandings.
10. What may the author consider most important in improving the parent-child relationship?
A. Making apologies. B. Open conversations.
C. Understanding each other. D. Long-term efforts and patience.
11. Why does the author write the text?
A. To look back on the past. B. To give thanks to her parents.
C. To offer suggestions to others. D. To describe a common social problem.
D
Rock climbing may seem like a sport filled with dangers. But experts say it offers participants many physical and mental health benefits that aren’t always found in other sports.
Climbing as a sport became popular in the 1980s, with the nation’s first indoor climbing gym opening in Seattle. Over 10 million Americans had participated in climbing by 2020, and sport climbing appeared the following year at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. And more people are climbing than ever — thanks to hot movies such as Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. Today, there are over 500 indoor climbing walls in the United States.
Rock climbing attracts many people as an excellent sport. As a full-body exercise that includes a lot of pulling, pushing and lifting, rock climbing helps build muscle strength. What’s more, the more you climb, the better your balance is. “Climbing helps you be aware of your body and improves the way you move your body,” said Nick Wilkes, owner and head instructor at Devils Lake Climbing Guides, a guide service in Madison, Wisconsin.
Many of rock climbing’s skills lie in determining and remembering your climbing route in advance. You also need to solve problems on the fly, changing your route if you meet with unexpected difficulties.
People prefer rock climbing partly because of the teamwork and safety support involved in the process, especially in roped climbing. Roped climbers have a partner on the ground called a belayer (保护者), who handles the rope through a device to manage the force, catch any falls and lower the climber. Throughout a climb, the two must continuously communicate about such concerns as desired rope force, when the climber wants to rest and when it’s time to come down.
“In order for me to be a better climber, I have to communicate clearly with the person belaying me so he knows how I’m feeling, when I need a break or if I want to change the climb in any way,” said Lindsay Wendt, fitness trainer of Atlanta-based Break Free Fitness.
12. Why are more people climbing today?
A. Its appearance as an Olympic sport.
B. The mental and physical health benefits.
C. The inspiration from popular movies about climbing.
D. The opening of the first indoor climbing gym in Seattle.
13. What is Nick Wilkes’ attitude towards rock climbing?
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
14. Why do roped climbers communicate with their belayers continuously?
A. To record the climbing process. B. To show off their climbing skills.
C. To ensure the safety of the climber. D. To avoid unexpected difficulties on the route.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the history of climbing. B. To stress the basic rules of climbing.
C. To show the dangers of rock climbing. D. To explain the popularity of rock climbing.

The summer holiday was coming soon, and my heart was already racing with plans. I imagined walking through crowded night markets, visiting famous landmarks, and maybe even relaxing by the sea with my parents.
But one evening, as we cleared the dinner table, Dad looked at me with a serious expression. “This summer,” he said firmly, “you’ll spend a few weeks with your grandparents in the countryside. It’s time you learned what real life feels like.” I froze. “What? Why? Can’t we just travel somewhere fun, like everyone else?” My voice rose before I could stop it. Dad shook his head. “You’ve had enough city trips. The countryside will teach you something more valuable than any vacation.” I was upset. The thought of having to do farm work made me very depressed. But no matter how much I argued, the decision was final.
When we arrived at the village, Grandma welcomed me warmly, but I forced a smile. Later, Grandpa handed me a straw hat and said, “Tomorrow, you’ll go to the field with me.”
The next morning, I walked along behind him, my shoes sinking into the soft earth. The sun burned my neck. We bent down to pull weeds (杂草) from the rows of corn. My hands burned, my back screamed with pain, and dust coated my face. “This is impossible,” I complained. “Why should I even be here, while my friends are playing in amusement parks?”
At lunch, I pushed my food around my plate, too tired to eat. “I can’t do this anymore,” I shouted. Grandma’s eyes softened. “Every seed (种子) that grows here feeds a family and everyone here is working hard,” she said gently. “Hard work may hurt at first, but it fills your heart in the end.” I nodded thoughtfully. In the evening, lying in bed and thinking about what my grandma had said, I decided to make a change.

Having a balanced diet
With the improvement of people’s life, more and more people have realized the link between food and health.
They’re tuning to eating some food which contains rich protein, vitamins and so on. However, there are still many people who haven’t known the importance of a healthy diet. They often not only have junk food but also eat food high in fat and calories. As a result, many of them are becoming fat, and some illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, are increasing.
As far as I’m concerned, it is important for us to realize the importance of eating more vegetables, more fruits and less meat. Moreover, we should take enough exercise. Only in this way can we keep fit and live a better life.

【47题答案】
【答案】
A week passed and I had changed a lot. I no longer hated the muddy fields. Every morning, I woke up early to help Grandpa water the corn. My hands were a little rough, but pride replaced complaint. At lunch, Grandma’s dishes tasted great —— I could finish a big bowl of rice. In the evening, I chatted with them about the crops. Hard work didn’t feel terrible anymore; instead, what once felt like suffering slowly turned into strength and unexpected joy.
When I left the village, all my family members were proud of me. Grandpa gave me a bag of corn, and Grandma hugged me tightly. On the way home, I told Dad about the farm work. He smiled and said I got what real life feels like. That summer, I didn’t go to some tourist attractions, but I learned to work hard and feel the joy of growth. I had come unwillingly, but I left stronger, lighter, and more grateful. It was the best vacation ever.
