“Is everybody ready?” the teacher asked, I certainly wasn’t. It was the early 1980s and 1 was in my high school typing class. I took it as an elective (选修的) course because learning French or Spanish seemed too difficult, After some time, I wished I hadn’t picked it, I had thought we would just be learning to touch type (自打), but not be tested on speed and accuracy (准确率), In addition to this, l was the only freshman in the class, Most of the other students were juniors or seniors.
“Hands on home keys. Eyes on the book, Ready? Type,” said the teacher, Suddenly the room was alive with 30 electric typewriters’ keys being pounded (猛击) on, I tried my best to keep up, but it was clear being a clerk wasn’t in my future. Though I didn’t make many errors, my typing speed was very slow and I knew I wasn’t going to get a good grade on this test. I really regretted taking this class and wished I could be learning phrases in French instead.
Now 43 years later I am so happy that I took that class and learned how to type. It has helped me write countless stories with inspiration (灵感) flowing through my heart and mind and into the keys on my computer keyboard. It has helped me to write letters and e-mails full of kindness to share with friends and family. It has helped me to do what I was meant to do and share what I was meant to share in this life. I am thankful to take that class.
We may meet difficulties in life. There are people we need to meet, skills we need to learn, talents we need to have and love we need to share. We’d better accept them all with a grateful heart, even when we don’t know why sometimes

Children are more creative when they learn in natural surroundings, according to new research from Curtin University. Primary school students in Australia and England were put to the test to see whether writing poetry in a natural outdoor setting produced more creative outcomes than writing in a classroom, and the answer was yes.
Dr Paul Gardner and Sonja Kuzich from Curtin’s School of Education ran relative trials with 10-year-old students in both countries and the results, recently published in the Cambridge Journal of Education, gave a big thumbs-up to the positive influence of natural settings. “We found that students who had direct contact with nature by immersing (沉浸) themselves in a bush or forest setting were much more descriptive and vivid in the language they used than the classroom-based writers who ‘imagined’ being in nature through photos,” Dr Gardner said.
In total, 97 students took part in the study, divided into four classrooms, including two based at an English primary school and two from a primary school in Western Australia. In each country one class visited a natural bush or forest before writing a poem based on what they saw, smelt and felt. The other class viewed a pile of images of the same bush or forest setting.
Ms Kuzich said the difference in creative language used between the classes was obvious with twice as many UK forest students using figurative (比喻的) language compared with the class-based students. In Australia that figure rose to more than four times when comparing the poetry of the forest-based students with those who remained at school.
The researchers say further studies of larger groups are now recommended to a gain greater understanding of the influence of natural spaces and “green learning” in schools.
5. Why were the students placed outdoors in nature according to the first two paragraphs?

B. To experience nature in depth.
C. To understand poems about nature better.

A. The specific steps of the experiment. B. New findings about students’ writing.
C. The steps of training the children. D. The purpose of performing the test.
7. What can we infer about the result of the study?
A. Students indoors are not good at poetry.
B. Students in Australia prefer to study poetry.
C. Students are more creative in a natural environment.
D. Students in the UK and Australia have different writing skill preferences.
8. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. Green learning is becoming a trend.
B. Further studies are to be carried out.
C. Green learning has been applied in school.
D. Future research is of little significance.

The Yellow River is the cradle of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices (设备) set up along the river collect and transmit information to the center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (治理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter. They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiao from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones (无人机) are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans in case we ever need to batten down the hatches (未雨绸缪), ”said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligence systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
9. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A. To conduct historical research.
B. To create a virtual tourist attraction.
C. To raise public awareness of river protection.
D. To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
10. How do the smart stones contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A. They record water quality.
B. They improve the river’s beauty.
C. They monitor and report dike movements.
D. They serve as markers for important locations.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The digital twin of the Yellow River.
B. The drones have an important influence on flood prevention.
C. How to control and prevent flood of the Yellow River.
D. How to make the people living along the Yellow River be richer.
12. What does the underlined word “comprehensive” in the last paragraph probably mean?

Dear David,
I’m sorry to know you are now having trouble fitting in with others, and you may often feel lonely and depressed. But I think the situation will improve if you can follow the advice below.
First, I recommend you to learn about your classmates’ likes and dislikes. In this way, you can get to know more different people. Second, being willing to help your classmates may be a good way, which will show them that you are just as friendly. Last but not least, it would be wise to take an active part in the class activities with your classmates. By doing so, you will make more friends.
With time going on, people will know you better and will like to make friends with you if you can do as the above. I hope you will find my suggestions helpful.
Best regards,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, Jim went ahead of Tim. The students cheered for him. Soon, it was clear that Jim was going to win. But, when they were just a few meters away from the finishing line, Tim surprisingly speeded and ran ahead of Jim and reached the finishing line first. Tim surprised everyone. He proudly received the trophy and the prize money.
Jim’s mother came up to Tim and praised him for his hard work. She smiled and said, “Your hard work finally paid off!” “Thanks, Miss!” Tim replied with a big smile and walked happily away with his trophy. Jim hung his head in shame and almost cried. His mother turned to him and said, “Look Jim, talent without hard work is simply useless. That boy worked very hard and finally was successful. Hard work is the only way to success!” Now, Jim understood the importance of hard work. This event brought about a big change in his life.
