【答案】18. C 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: A growing number of Americans are turning gas-powered vehicles into electric ones. Such changes are becoming more popular as battery technology gets better and the world turns towards cleaner energy sources. At the end of 2019, Kevin Erickson bought his car for $6,500. He then began a year-and-a-half-long project to change the car into an electric car. Now, the car can go from a still position to 97 kilometers per hour in about three seconds. Its top speed is almost 250 kilometers per hour. Jonathan Klinger is a president of car culture for Hagerty Insurance. He said changing classic cars into electric vehicles was definitely a trend. In May, the Michigan-based company did a web-based study of about 25,000 automobile lovers in the United States, Canada and the UK. About one percent had at least partly changed an older model car into some form of electric power. The top three reasons for changing the vehicles in order were for better performance, for a fun project, and because of environmental concerns. The change requires special knowledge to complete. It also involves safety concerns and parts that are sometimes hard to find.

Chichen Itza-Mexico
Chichen Itza is a top tourist destination in Mexico known for its impressive monumental structures constructed between AD 750 and 1200. Among these are the Castillo pyramid and the Temple of a Thousand Warriors.
Getting there & doing it
Chichen Itza is situated 80 miles from Tulum along the route to Merida. While hotels and tour companies offer organized trips, renting a car for a self-guided visit is often preferable. Gaining some knowledge about the pre-Columbian Maya can enhance your experience at these sites. Consider reading Michael Coe’s The Maya and/or Joyce Kelly’s An Archaeological Guide to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before your visit.
You can comfortably explore the site in about 2 hours. Afterward, for a meal, travel 40 km east to Cancun to enjoy authentic Mayan organic cuisine.
While you’re there
Take some time to drive to Merida, known as the “White City”, which features charming old-world architecture, stunning churches, and vibrant markets. Additionally, make sure to visit Cenote Ik-Kil for a unique swimming experience.
When to do it
The site is open every day of the year, from 8 am to 5 pm. The rainy season, from May to October, is the least busy time for the Mayan Riviera. However, during the dry season, from November to April, it gets quite crowded. If possible, try to avoid the peak season from December to January, when it becomes especially crowded around Christmas and New Year.
21. What should you do before visiting Chichen Itza?
A. Take a guided tour. B. Hire a local guide.
C. Watch a documentary about Mexico. D. Read specific books about the Maya civilization.
22. What activities are recommended to do after visiting Chichen Itza?
A. Attending a cultural show in Tulum. B. Driving 40 km east for Mayan foods.

A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year.
Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said, “It’s not as difficult as you might think if you start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one for the sink and the other half for the shower. It’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”
“So it’s actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually, and you’ll start noticing the difference,” Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them.
In 2017, the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market and has since developed into a website. Louise regularly writes a newsletter for her hundreds of subscribers. They also started selling eco-friendly products, ranging from non-chemical household cleaning and washing solutions for a “less toxic home” to bamboo washing-up brushes. Louise mentioned, “I started No Waste Living because I wanted to show our achievement s and lead by example.”
Although the family occasionally faces criticism, Louise remains determined. She said, “The main point of contention(争论) for people regarding new waste rules is having to drive their waste to a recycling center, which adds to their already busy lives. However, in the long run, you will create more space in your home, save money, and spend less time dealing with garbage cans.”
24. How did the couple start their waste reduction journey?
A. By replacing small soaps with large ones. B. By using a small amount of bath cream.
C. By using unpackaged soap bars. D. By recycling soft plastics and batteries.
25. Why did the couple found No Waste Living?
A. To bring eco-products to market. B. To inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
C. To treat recyclable waste from the neighborhood. D. To answer the call of their subscribers.
26. Why do some people dislike new waste rules?
A. They mean more work to deal with garbage.
B. They increase the cost of garbage collection.
C. They establish a set time for waste management.
D. They limit the daily amount of garbage for collection.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A business - minded couple. B. The “less poisonous home” concept.
C. The global trend in recycling. D. A planet- friendly lifestyle.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. A 27. D

Professor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed an artificially intelligent teaching assistant to help handle the numerous questions from students in the online class. Professor Goel already had 8 teaching assistants, but that wasn’t enough to deal with the huge number of questions from students.
Many students drop out of online courses for lack of teaching support. When students feel confused and reach out with questions that go unanswered, their motivation to continue begins to fade. Professor Goel decided to do something to change this situation by creating a virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is based on the IBM Watson platform.
Goel and his team developed several versions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the online forums. At first, the virtual assistant wasn’t too great. But Goel and his team sourced the online discussion forum to find all 40, 000 questions that had ever been asked since the class started. Then they began to feed Jill with the questions and answers. After some adjustment, Jill was able to answer the students’ questions correctly 97% of the time. The virtual assistant became so advanced and realistic that the students didn’t know she was a computer. The students, who were studying artificial intelligence, were interacting with artificial intelligence and couldn’t tell it apart from a real human being. Goel didn’t inform them about Jill’s true identity until April 26. The students were actually very positive about the experience.
The goal of Professor Goel’s virtual assistant next year is to take over answering 40% of all questions raised by students. The name, Jill Watson will of course, change to something else next term. Professor Goel has a much rosier outlook on the future of AI than say, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates or Steve Wozniak.
28. Professor Goel created a virtual teaching assistant because .
A. his course was not interesting enough B. he felt confused about how to teach online
C. students’ questions were too many to handle D. his students were unsatisfied with the assistants
29. What do we learn about Jill Watson?
A. She turned out to be a great success.
B. She was unwelcome to students at first.
C. Her true identity was still a secret to students.
D. Her name will be kept for the next virtual assistant.
30. What does Professor Goel plan to do next with Jill Watson?
A. Replace her with different versions. B. Enable her to answer more questions.
C. Recommend her to some famous people. D. Equip her with new questions and answers.
31. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. A robot named Jill Watson gives an online course.
B. Robots will take humans’ place in online classes in the future.
C. A virtual teaching assistant is getting popular among the students.
D. A virtual teaching assistant helps solve online questions in large quantities.
【答案】28 C 29. A 30. B 31. D

Feeling extremely stressed by your to-do list can make you unhappy, but a new study suggests that more free time might not be the magic way most of us dream it could be.
The researchers analyzed data from 35,000 subjects about how Americans spend their free time. They found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective happiness — but only up to a point. Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.
Part of finding this “sweet spot” is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing “productive” or “unproductive” activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow can benefit people’s mental health.
Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are “productive”. If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.
“In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment,” Sharif said, “our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.”
32. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How being in a state of flow can benefit people’s mental health.
B. How there searchers analyzed data from the 35,000 subjects.
C. How “productive” activities are different from “unproductive” ones.
D. How people make use of their free time influences their happiness.
33. How much free time one day do people have that can generally make them feel better?
A. About 60 minutes. B. About 90 minutes.
C. From 120 to 180 minutes. D. From 180 to 210 minutes.
34. How can we understand the “productive” activities in paragraph 4?
A. They must be fun and easy.
B. They are mostly traditional ones.
C. They depend on one’s own sense.
D. They generally rely on one’s own physical condition.
35. What did Sharif say to people who have a lot of free time?
A. People should spend their time with aims.
B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
C People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
D. Retired and unemployed people can’t deal with free time well.
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. C 35. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一项新的研究结果,即更多的空闲时间不一定能带来人们所梦想的快乐,关键在于人们如何利用空闲时间。
【32题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Part of finding this “sweet spot” is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing “productive” or “unproductive” activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day — but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow can benefit people’s mental health.(找到这个 “理想状态” 的关键之一,与人们如何利用空闲时间有关。
根据第二段“Compared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time “sweet spot” might be two to three hours per day.( 与空闲时间较少的人相比,每天有最多两小时空闲时间的人通常感觉更好。不过,每天有五小时或更长空闲时间的人,整体感受反而更差。因此,空闲时间的 “理想时长” 可能是每天两到三小时。)”可知,每天有两小时空闲时间的人通常感觉更好,两小时即120分钟,每天两到三小时即120到180分钟。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are “productive”.(当然,对你来说,任何能增加你幸福感的活动都是“有成效的”。)”可知,能增加你幸福感的活动就是“有成效的”活动,所以“有成效的”活动取决于一个人的感觉。故选C。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Sharif said, “our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes.”(Sharif说,“我们的研究结果表明,人们若能带着明确的目的利用好这些新获得的时间,便能从中获益。”)”可知,Sharif认为人们应该带着目标度过他们的时间。故选A。

In addition, be realistic and make sure the goals are practicable in terms of finances and free time.
While it is easy to get caught up in the daily tiring activities of life, always keep in mind that doing something new can be the best thing we can do for ourselves. ____40____

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery(杂货)store downstairs from my house. As a girl of shy nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the busy city life.
One sunny day, my school told us about an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to show their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a sense of curiosity and a desire to join in. However, my self-doubt and anxiety held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She smiled, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I couldn’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, praised my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big thing.” Then a light smile seemed to go in her head. “Why not practice right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I started practicing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed(排练)the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】范文
I was completely knocked out by the news. My hands trembled as I hung up the phone, staring blankly at the costume hanging on my bedroom door. All our rehearsals, all the courage I’d gathered — now I had to face the stage alone. That night, I paced around our tiny apartment, my stomach churning with fear. Mom found me curled up by the grocery sacks at dawn, “Remember how Emma believed in you first?” she whispered, handing me a steaming mug. “Now it’s time to believe in yourself.” Her words settled in my chest like warm honey, steadying my frantic heartbeat.
Finally came the big moment. The city hall buzzed with hundreds of people as I stood trembling in the wings, gripping the microphone like a lifeline. When my name was called, blinding lights revealed my parents beaming in the front row — Dad in his flour-dusted apron, having rushed from the store. As the first notes floated out, my voice wavered, then grew stronger when I remembered Emma’s coaching. Suddenly, I spotted her pale but smiling face in the audience, mouthing the lyrics with me. The thunderous applause that followed wasn’t just for the performance, but for my conquering the invisible walls I’d built around myself. Backstage, Emma hugged me tightly, “You didn’t need me after all,” while Mom proudly adjusted my crooked hairband — their combined warmth melting the last of my shyness away.

Chichen Itza-Mexico
Chichen Itza is a top tourist destination in Mexico, known for its impressive monumental structures constructed between AD 750 and 1200.
C Paying a visit to the Castillo pyramid. D. Exploring the Temple of a Thousand Warriors.
23. What is the ideal time to visit Chichen Itza to avoid large crowds?

At first the virtual assistant wasn’t too great.
A She turned out to be a great success.
A People should spend their time with aims.
B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
C. People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
D. Retired and unemployed people can’t deal with free time well.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
