Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?
Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children, but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.
Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"
And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said? "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy."

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏) us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regular from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
23. What does the underlined part “that train has left the station”mean in Paragraph 2?
A. The train has changed its course.
B. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
C. The Internet brings great changes to people’s life.
D. The Internet has improved people’s life.
24. What can we know about the study according to Paragraph 4?
A. There was no similar study like it before.
B. Most of the young people had high blood pressure.
C. Adult people aged above 17 took part in the study.
D. Over half of the teens in the study were heavy Internet users.
25. Which of the following would Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow probably agree with?
A. That teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet.
B. That the Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. That smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D. That regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet.
26. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. Every coin has two sides—so does the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. How to prevent teenagers from using the Internet.
B 24. A 25. D 26. C

Artificial intelligence (AI) still can’t see the future, but a new algorithm (算法) may come close: using nothing but written movie summaries, the AI can consistently tell which films will play well — or awfully — to critics and audiences. If the model can be further improved, it could one day help producers predict whether a movie will be a failure at the box office, before it’s even made.
To test several models, researchers used plot summaries of 42, 306 movies from all over the world, many collected from Wikipedia. The models broke the summaries by sentence and used something called sentiment (情感) analysis to analyze each one. Sentences considered “positive”, such as “Thor loves his hammer”, would receive a rating closer to positive one. And sentences that were considered “negative”, like “Thor gets in a fight” would be rated closer to negative one.
Generally, successful movies such as 1951’s Alice in Wonderland — which scored 80% on the movie-rating website Rotten Tomatoes — have frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful ones, such as 2009’s The Limits of Control, vary less. It’s not important whether the films begin or end happily, the researchers say. What’s important is that the sentiments change frequently.
The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified into a single score to reflect how often the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methods of arriving at a final score. All three could predict fairly accurately whether a movie would be unpopular, and one method worked especially well for guessing which thrillers and comedies reviewers would hate.
The methods were not as efficient at guessing which movies would succeed, but they still predicted the results more accurately than random chance. In the future, the researchers say their methods could be bettered to predict the amount a movie could earn at the box office and help producers decide which movies to invest in. The system’s fair judgment might give an advantage to less well-known writers, the researchers add. It could also potentially save the public from having to sit through films like Jaws: The Revenge, which online critics and audience alike rate as terrible.
27. How can AI help foresee the future of movies?
A. By testing plot models. B. By using sentiment analysis.
C. By writing summaries. D. By consulting critics and audiences.
28. What is the key factor for a successful movie according to the researchers?
A. A happy ending. B. Famous movie stars.
C. A well- known producer. D. Frequent sentiment changes.
29. What benefit will the methods possibly bring?
A. Helping producers invest wisely. B. Assessing a movie’s quality accurately.
C. Increasing box office earnings. D. Providing written summaries for critics.
30. What’s the researchers’ attitude to the model?
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Negative.

根据空前的“Have you entered a new school?(你进入新学校了吗?)” 再根据空后的“There are tons of different ways to connect with your classmates, as long as you’re willing to take a leap of faith.(有无数种不同的方法来与你的同学联系,只要你愿意冒险。)” F“Being a new student can feel pretty stressful at first, but you have nothing to fear.(刚开始做新生可能会感到压力很大,但你没什么好害怕的。)”
根据上文“Social media makes it easier to build connections with your schoolmates. A quick comment (评论), retweet (转发), or message can be enough to start a new friendship.(社交媒体让你更容易与同学建立联系。一条简短的评论、转发或发消息就足以开始一段新的友谊。)”可知,作者认为利用评论、转发或发消息就可以开始一段新的友谊。而空后“Comment and let him know you love his technique. (评论,让他知道你喜欢他的技术。)”则建议读者评论某人的技术,由此判断,空处应和此相关。选项E“Someone at your school posted a video of a cool painting he is working on. (你们学校有人上传了一段他正在画的很酷的画的视频。)”中提到了某人上传了自己所做的画,而这和下文的“his technique”相一致。故选E。
【33题详解】
空处为小标题,即下文的主要内容。根据下文“That person might be in the same boat as you are. Instead of joining a crowded table or finding an empty area for yourself, look for someone siting by themselves. This is an easy way to start a conversation with someone new. In the cafe, you might ask “Is this seat taken? ” or “Can I sit with you? ” before sitting down. (那个人可能和你处境相同。与其加入一个拥挤的桌子或为自己找一个空的地方,不如找一个独自坐着的人。这是和陌生人开始对话的一个简单方法。在咖啡馆里,你可能会问“这个座位有人吗?”或者“我可以坐你旁边吗?”然后坐下。)”可知,本段主要推荐新生可以接近独自坐着吃饭的人。选项A“Approach someone siting alone at lunch. (接近独自坐着吃午饭的人。)”与下文内容一致。故选A。
根据下文“You might help someone pick up his dropped textbooks and notebooks, or lend a pencil to a classmate in need. Being kind and considerate is a great way to separate yourself from the rest of the crowd. You might offer part of your lunch to someone who forgot their lunch money, or offer to deliver homework to a student who missed class.(你可以帮助别人捡起他掉在地上的教科书和笔记本,或者借给需要帮助的同学一支铅笔。善良和体贴是让你从人群中脱颖而出的好方法。你可以给忘带午餐钱的人提供你的午餐,或者给缺课的学生送作业。)”可知,作者认为帮助同学是开始一段友谊的好方法。选项B“Helping a classmate could be a great opportunity for friendship.(帮助同学是建立友谊的好机会。)”
根据小标题“Make eye contact and smile.(保持眼神交流并微笑。)” 空前“When you walk in the halls, hold your head up high and make eye contact with a few other people.”(当你走在大厅里的时候,抬起你的头,和其他人进行眼神交流。)建议新生要进行眼神交流;而空后“If they smile back at you, try saying hi so you can get to know them. (如果他们对你微笑,试着打个招呼,这样你就可以了解他们了。)”则建议新生在对方微笑时可以尝试打招呼。由此可以判断,空处建议新生主动微笑。选项G“Even if you don’t know the person, offer a kind smile to show that you’re positive and friendly.(即使你不认识这个人,也要微笑,表现出你的积极和友好。)”

Dear Charles,
How’s everything going? I’ve noticed you’re struggling to choose between the two clubs, and I really want to help since it’s tough for a new student to decide.
I recommend the Chinese Kung Fu Club. Firstly, it lets you experience Chinese culture more vividly — you’ll learn classic moves and understand the “martial virtue” behind them. Secondly, it’s a great way to make friends quickly while keeping fit. Unlike literature which needs deep language skills, Kung Fu is easier to start with.
Hope it helps! Feel free to ask if you need more details.
Yours,

A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Negative.
