Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?
Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children, but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.
Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"
And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said? "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy."
19. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? ______
A. The Waves series are suitable for adults.
B. It is necessary to publish books aimed at teenagers.
C. Teenagers are more interested in reading nowadays.
D. Teenagers should be encouraged to read.
20 What makes The Purple Ring catch people's eye? ______
A. Its writer.
B. Its cover.
C. Its price.
D. Its title.
21. What do we know about the Waves series? ______
A. They have attractive covers.
B. They are about real facts.
C. They are popular with teenage boys.
D. They are wrongly placed in the children section.
22. What does the author intend to do with the passage? ______
A. To compare different series of teenage fiction.
B. To give information about a new series of books.
C. To encourage more writers to create fictions for teenagers.
D. To explain why teenage fiction is easier to write than adult fiction.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏) us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regular from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
23. What does the underlined part “that train has left the station”mean in Paragraph 2?
A. The train has changed its course.
B. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
C. The Internet brings great changes to people’s life.
D. The Internet has improved people’s life.
24. What can we know about the study according to Paragraph 4?
A. There was no similar study like it before.
B. Most of the young people had high blood pressure.
C. Adult people aged above 17 took part in the study.
D. Over half of the teens in the study were heavy Internet users.
25. Which of the following would Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow probably agree with?
A. That teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet.
B. That the Internet will ruin human life in the future.
C. That smartphones are more harmful than computers.
D That regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet.
26. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. Every coin has two sides—so does the Internet.
C. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D. How to prevent teenagers from using the Internet.
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) still can’t see the future, but a new algorithm (算法) may come close: using nothing but written movie summaries, the AI can consistently tell which films will play well — or awfully — to critics and audiences. If the model can be further improved, it could one day help producers predict whether a movie will be a failure at the box office, before it’s even made.
To test several models, researchers used plot summaries of 42, 306 movies from all over the world, many collected from Wikipedia. The models broke the summaries by sentence and used something called sentiment (情感) analysis to analyze each one. Sentences considered “positive”, such as “Thor loves his hammer”, would receive a rating closer to positive one. And sentences that were considered “negative”, like “Thor gets in a fight” would be rated closer to negative one.
Generally, successful movies such as 1951’s Alice in Wonderland — which scored 80% on the movie-rating website Rotten Tomatoes — have frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful ones, such as 2009’s The Limits of Control, vary less. It’s not important whether the films begin or end happily, the researchers say. What’s important is that the sentiments change frequently.
The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified into a single score to reflect how often the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methods of arriving at a final score. All three could predict fairly accurately whether a movie would be unpopular, and one method worked especially well for guessing which thrillers and comedies reviewers would hate.
The methods were not as efficient at guessing which movies would succeed, but they still predicted the results more accurately than random chance. In the future, the researchers say their methods could be bettered to predict the amount a movie could earn at the box office and help producers decide which movies to invest in. The system’s fair judgment might give an advantage to less well-known writers, the researchers add. It could also potentially save the public from having to sit through films like Jaws: The Revenge, which online critics and audience alike rate as terrible.
27. How can AI help foresee the future of movies?
A. By testing plot models. B. By using sentiment analysis.
C. By writing summaries. D. By consulting critics and audiences.
28. What is the key factor for a successful movie according to the researchers?
A. A happy ending. B. Famous movie stars.
C. A well- known producer. D. Frequent sentiment changes.
29. What benefit will the methods possibly bring?
A. Helping producers invest wisely. B. Assessing a movie’s quality accurately.
C. Increasing box office earnings. D. Providing written summaries for critics.
30. What’s the researchers’ attitude to the model?
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Negative.

Dear Charles,
How’s everything going? I’ve noticed you’re struggling to choose between the two clubs, and I really want to help since it’s tough for a new student to decide.
I recommend the Chinese Kung Fu Club. Firstly, it lets you experience Chinese culture more vividly — you’ll learn classic moves and understand the “martial virtue” behind them. Secondly, it’s a great way to make friends quickly while keeping fit. Unlike literature which needs deep language skills, Kung Fu is easier to start with.
Hope it helps! Feel free to ask if you need more details.
Yours,
Li Hua
