English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere—hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters—just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven’t been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you’ve probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor (港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don’t leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It’s delicious.
1. Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta?
A. In the Ludlow Castle. B. In the Foodie Center of England.
C. In the Hereford Cathedral. D. In the Black and White House Museum.
2. What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center?
A. It’s situated near a big island. B. It’s almost surrounded by water.
C. It’s known for its flower festival. D. It’s easily accessible from London.
3. What does the author suggest visitors do in Mevagissey?
A. Try the Cornish pie. B. Watch a British TV show.
C. Go fishing in the sea. D. Take pictures of the harbor.

How fast can someone climb 15 meters — the height of a five-floor building? The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds. The 23-year-old is the third person to have finished the speed climbing route (竞速攀岩路线) in less than 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddriq Leonardo. People call Cao “the fastest man” in China or “Chinese Spider-Man”.
According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can change every time because it’s a highly stressful race where two climbers compete at the same time. It’s also a sport that finishes in seconds. If you want to succeed, everything has to be perfect. But this pressure is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport. “The pressure of competing side by side with another climber really excites me,” he said. “And I do enjoy the feeling when the result of a climb is more than my personal best.”
Cao tried climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids who first get into climbing, Cao was mainly doing bouldering (抱石攀岩) and lead climbing (先锋攀岩) and was doing very well. However, he got wounded and had an operation at the age of 18. He then decided to try speed climbing because it uses different skills from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his body.
It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. He understands how to use his body to win. “I know how to better distribute (分配) power to different parts of my body,” Cao said.
In his eyes, the national record of 4.98 seconds has become thing of the past. “I’ll keep trying to do better and improve myself,” said Cao.
4. How does the writer start this story?
A. By giving an example.
B. By describing views.
C. By asking a question.
D. By giving a suggestion.
5. From the first two paragraphs we can learn ________.
A. many people in China like watching the three kinds of climbing
B. Kiromal Katibin and Veddriq Leonardo are from different countries
C. Speed climbing is challenging.
D. more than three climbers finished the fifteen-meter speed climbing route in 5 seconds.
6. The result of speed climbing changes every time. Which of the following isn’t the reason?
A. Everyone can succeed easily.
B. It is a sport that finishes in seconds.
C. It’s a highly stressful race.
D. Two climbers compete at the same time.
7. What’s Cao Long’s winning secret?
A. He thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete.
B. He did bouldering and lead climbing very well.
C. He tried climbing earlier than the other children.
D. He understands how to use his body better to win.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. D

Going to the gym can take time and effort, it often hurts, and it can be extremely tiresome. Most weight-related exercises are a combination of sets and reps (组和次). In order to see any significant change from any exercise, it will probably need to be repeated six to eight times, fora minimum of three sets, for about three months. For some, there’s nothing more boring than endless miles spent running on a treadmill (跑步机).
But what if there were a way to relieve the tedium of exercise while still getting a good workout? Luckily for us, there’s virtual reality.
Many VR games are played while standing. In order to play properly, the player is forced to move around swinging their arms or using their legs. After an hour of this on a regular enough basis, it’s not surprising that many people unexpectedly find themselves a little fitter. There are already a number of virtual reality games which, intentionally or not, result in their player ‘getting a good sweat on’ if played for enough time. For example, there’s a first person shooter which forces the player to sidestep, duck and other sport actions. That’s cardio (有氧运动). Or there’s a music game which forces players to shadowbox in order to hit the notes—that’s an upper-body workout.
The potential for VR to help people get fit has been noticed by one company. They want to take the whole experience into the gym. They are making a resistance machine, designed to be used in combination with a VR headset. Players challenge a virtual opponent in a series of games, which results in a 30-minute full-body workout. However, the cost of the equipment is expensive and there are safety concerns to be worked out. So don’t hang up your gym shorts just yet.
Although it’s early days, for those of us who struggle to keep passionate about exercise, anew solution could be coming. And a world where a person can exercise and have fun at the same time might be something that many people would want—virtual or not.
8. In paragraph l, the author mainly conveys that going to the gym__________.
A. cannot avoid being hurt B. is hard to hold on
C. makes sense in a short time D. means three months of exercise
9. What does the underlined word “tedium” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Boredom. B. Tiredness. C. Expense. D. Inconvenience.
10. What can be concluded about the 30-minute VR full-body workout?
A. Several security problems have been solved.
B. The relevant equipment has complex designs.
C. It has turned out to be very effective and popular.
D. It may be unavailable due to some disadvantages.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards virtual exercise in the future?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive.
C. Tolerant. D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据第一段“Going to the gym can take time and effort, it often hurts, and it can be extremely tiresome. Most weight-related exercises are a combination of sets and reps (组和次). In order to see any significant change from any exercise, it will probably need to be repeated six to eight times, fora minimum of three sets, for about three months. For some, there’s nothing more boring than endless miles spent running on a treadmill (跑步机).”(去健身房需要时间和精力,经常会受伤,而且会非常令人厌倦。大多数与重量相关的练习都是一组一次的组合。为了看到任何锻炼的显著变化,它可能需要重复六到八次,至少三组,持续大约三个月。对一些人来说,没有什么比在跑步机上无休止地跑步更无聊的了。)可推知,在第一段中,作者主要表达了去健身房很难坚持下去。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第一段中“For some, there’s nothing more boring than endless miles spent running on a treadmill .”(对一些人来说,没有什么比在跑步机上无休止地跑步更无聊的了。)提到健身房跑步的无聊,以及划线单词句中“…while still getting a good workout?”(同时又能得到良好的锻炼呢?)和下一句“Luckily for us, there’s virtual reality.”(幸运的是,我们有了虚拟现实。)由此可知,此处为有一种方法可以缓解运动的枯燥感。故可此处划线单词tedium为“枯燥,无聊”的意思,结合选项A项Boredom“无聊”意思一致。故选A项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Players challenge a virtual opponent in a series of games, which results in a 30-minute full-body workout. However, the cost of the equipment is expensive and there are safety concerns to be worked out. So don’t hang up your gym shorts just yet.”(玩家在一系列游戏中挑战一个虚拟对手,结果是30分钟的全身锻炼。然而,设备成本昂贵,还有安全问题需要解决。所以先别挂起你的运动短裤。)可推知,由于某些不利因素,30分钟的VR全身锻炼可能无法进行。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Although it’s early days, for those of us who struggle to keep passionate about exercise, anew solution could be coming. And a world where a person can exercise and have fun at the same time might be something that many people would want—virtual or not.”(虽然现在还为时尚早,但对于我们这些努力保持锻炼热情的人来说,新的解决方案可能会出现。一个人可以同时锻炼和娱乐的世界可能是许多人想要的——不管是不是虚拟的。)可推知,作者对未来虚拟锻炼的态度是积极乐观的。故选B项。
D
Middle school student Joaquin invented a car seat alarm system to remind parents that their child is in the backseat. He did so after reading a shocking story of a father whose baby died of heat stroke after accidentally being left in a hot car. Joaquin felt something had to be done to prevent this. The following is what he told a reporter.
A closed car increased the surrounding temperature, leading to a sharper increase in temperature when parked in the sun and children overheat several times faster than adults. Of the 360 deaths caused by heat stroke in cars in America in the last decade, most were caused when a child was forgotten inside a car.
This was why I designed an alarm to warn drivers of the case. To detect when a baby was in a car seat, I tried working with a weight sensor, but it produced too many false signs. After more research, I used a magnetic sensor, which could be activated when the seat belt was closed. If a driver locked the car with the baby in, the car alarm system would start sounding, and the car would not lock.
I have participated in several science fair competitions. STEM is the main source of knowledge for every field in the world and it needn’t be a complicated subject at school. This is what first interested me, which changed the way I saw the world.
Broadcom MASTERS has encouraged me to pursue STEM. When I was presenting my project at Texas Science Fair 2017, the judges came by and I felt I failed. Then I saw four families crowding around my board — I was shocked. They wanted me to present my project to them because they knew about it from the news. They asked me to talk to their kids to inspire them.
My advice is: Work hard, and do what you enjoy. Instead of always watching TV, think how you can create something you’re interested in.
12. What led to Joaquin inventing a car seat alarm system?
A. A baby’s death in a car. B. Many children being left in cars.
C. The 360 deaths by heat stroke in cars. D. Parents’ failure to look after their children.
13. What is the advantage of a magnetic sensor?
A. It is easier to operate. B. It is activated more easily.
C. It can give warns correctly. D. It can sound to warn parents.
14. What can be inferred about Joaquin?
A. He began to pursue STEM last year. B. He was interested in science at school.
C. He won several awards at science fairs. D. He found science complicated at school.
15. Why did four families take their kids to Joaquin’s project?
A. To reduce their kids’ TV time. B. To get an award from Joaquin.
C. To get encouragement from Joaquin. D. To ask Joaquin to teach their kids.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C

You are not practicing at all,” said Jim’s mother.
"Mom, you know how fast I am! Why should I waste my time running? Only I will win; no one else will win!” said Jim.“Jim, you may be right but talent (天赋) without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly," his mother warned him.Jim just laughed. He was so confident that he would win the trophy (奖杯) as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!
Tim, a classmate of Jim, was also participating (参加) in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance (持久力) to run the race.
There were a few days left for the Sports Day but Jim did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night.
The Sports Day was almost around the corner but Jim was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his hard work had become a very great runner.
At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students showed up on the ground to cheer their favorites. The coach blew the whistle (口哨) and everyone began to run toward the finishing line. It was so exciting. Jim and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.

B
C
B. Positive.
C. Tolerant. D. Doubtful.
