Go Sledding(滑雪橇)Around Baltimore
From steep slopes()to gentle hills, there's no shortage of local sledding rides in the Baltimore area.
Here are a few of the favorites.
Leakin Park
1901 EAGLE DRIVE
There's a sweet slide behind the Crimean Mansion off Eagle Drive-also known today as Friends of
Orianda House-which is accessible and also one of the best-kept sledding secrets inside city lines. The
Winans Meadow area is super scenic year-round,but especially so when it snows.
Baltimore Country Club
4712 CLUB ROAD
The golf course is a legendary sledding destination, but make sure to be aware that the steep slope here is
nicknamed "Adventure Hill"for a reason. No small number of green hands have rolled down here.As one
Reddit commenter said,"It left me hurt many a time as a kid"-words no doubt that frighten some but also
attract more than a few.
Herring Run Park
3800 BELAIR ROAD
The 375-acre northeast area may be the top spot in the city for the variety of hills to choose from.Created
by the Olmstead Brothers more than a century ago,the stream valley park is also home to fox and deer, which
you might just spot wandering about in their winter coats.Visitors can enjoy the benefit of sufficient parking
for private vehicles.
Federal Hill
300 WARREN AVE
It's an obvious destination, given its picturesque view overlooking the Inner Harbor, for sledding and
building snowmen and snowwomen. The hills here are very steep, however.Just be careful not to rush out onto
Key Highway or into the back of the American Visionary Art Museum.

When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly refused me."I'm not sporty;stop trying to get
me to do sports,"Julianna said.I had suggested it because some of my happiest recent memories were of
playing ping-pong with her.Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to work
out some of her growing pains on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always refused by her.
Still,I was undeterred.I believed that doing some sports would help Julianna manage her emotions.I've
seen how sports help with stress. It worked for me when I was a teenage girl.
Midway into summer,we stayed at home, and Julianna and I felt really bored."Do you want to play
tennis?"I asked her at lunch one afternoon."Sure",she said.At that time,we were both eager to spend as
much time as possible out of the house.
Arriving at the court,we set down our bags, picked up our rackets ()and headed to our sides of the
court. The net was like the growing divide between us-I desiring connection and my teenage daughter
Honging for independence.
1 started by hitting a ball over the net,and Julianna took a big swing and missed. We repeated this several
more times.I didn't tell her she was holding the racket too close to the neck or she should step more into her
forehand. My daughter wanted the chance to figure these things out for herself. We repeated the pattern of me
hitting the ball and her missing it a few times before she finally got it back over the net."This is fun,"she said
with a mixture of surprise and delight and then she smiled widely.
Now we always find time to play tennis. We're both eager for an activity that can ease tensions between
us in daily life. It's nice to have a place where both of us can release our negative moods and let them go.
4.Why did the author persuade her daughter to play tennis?
A.Tennis was as popular as ping-pong.
B.They had a good time playing tennis together.
C.It would help her daughter make more like-minded friends.
D.It would be good for her daughter's emotional management
5.What does the underlined word"undeterred"mean in paragraph 2?
A.Not dishonest.
B.Not sure.
C.Not discouraged.
D.Not surprised.
6.What did the author do when her daughter missed tbe ball?
A.She stood close to the net.
B.She repeated hitting the ball.
C.She changed ends with her daughter.
D.She instructed her daughter immediately.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mom Coaches Teen Daughter in Tennis
B.Mom Helps Teen Daughter Express Her Emotions
C.Mom Encourages Teen Daughter to Be Independent
D.Mom and Teen Daughter Find Some Peace on the Tennis Court

Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park.A small psychology study suggests urban
(environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load.A walk through nature,on
the other hand, appears to ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show fhat natural settings may
potentially reduce cognitive (tiredness and improve reaction times straight away. The study, which
includes two experiments with two different approaches, was conducted among 65 university students in the
lab.
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people's way of walking and cognitive load,
During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to
watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metreroom at their natural speed. The wall oppos'在.对面的)
them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. After each walk, participants were asked to rate
their feelings of discomfort in the visual environment. On the wholer when walking in city settings, people
reported more discomfort and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
The second experiment dug into some of the higher-level cognitive processes that might be at play.In the
experiment, participants were asked to tell the difference between basic visual shapes on the computer while
also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).Measuring reaction
times in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea.In urban environments,
participants were slower in telling the difference between simple shapes. The authors think this is because
arban environments are more distracting(令人分心的)for our brains and take longer to process, but more
research is needed to prove that idea.
8.How were the experiments conducted mainly?
A.By comparing.
B.By giving data.
C.By giving examples.
D.By explaining facts.
9.What are the advantages of walking in natural environment over in urban environment?
A.It can make us feel relaxed and react quickly.
B.It can activate our thinking and speed up our step.
C.It can make us less tired and improve our memory.
D.It can make us become more focused and creative.
10.What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.Urban environment makes us more concentrated.
B.People's feelings are decided by their pace of walking.
C.The result of the experiments is widely appreciated.
D.People tend to get tired more easily walking in the city.
11.Why were participants slower in recognizing simple shapes in urban environments?
A.They had a lower cognitive load.
B.They had to slow down their pace.
C.They couldn't concentrate properly.
D.They felt uncomfortable after walking.
