Whether you are attracted by landscapes or the after-effects of weather, there are photo opportunities everywhere. The following photography tips from photographers will help you shoot your best shot.
Get to know your subject and their habits
Take time to get to know your local wildlife before shooting, and you might just capture something truly special. Try to shoot from the perspective of the animal you are filming. Resist the urge to just point and click — take the time to observe local wildlife and you will see the rewards in your photos.
Capture details in a close-up
Going in close can bring some fascinating rewards in nature photography. Zooming (聚焦) into plants with frost or picking up water drops on a spider’s web can help show the beauty we might miss in everyday life. If you’re zooming in on one particular subject, such as a bee landing on a flower, you could end up with soft-focus objects in the background to create added interest.
Shoot photos at best time of day
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to timing, and a shadow or lots of natural sunlight can produce great results — it’s just best to avoid extremes. Too much bright light hitting your camera lens (镜头) sensor will result in an overexposed photo with little detail, while a dark sky full of stars might provide too much contrast between the background and the subject you are taking pictures of.
Capture sharp, clear images
Although the delete button can be your best friend, a few things will help you avoid unclear images. Keeping the camera stable is key, whether that’s through a solid pose as you stand ready to shoot or using a support. A self-timer can also be a handy tool for keeping your hands away from dials and settings once you have chosen your shot.
1. Which of the following is the benefit of “zooming in” in shooting?
A. It may be an aid to capture the delicate beauty in daily life.
B. It may be helpful to avoid overexposing photos with little detail.
C. It may bring about deleting the background to create added interest.
D. It may contribute to focusing on several particular subjects at a time.
2. What is a photographer recommended to do to shoot satisfactory photos?
A. Chase the running rabbit when shooting. B. Follow his instinct when shooting.
C. Shoot in bright daylight at midday. D. Use a stable stand when shooting.
3. You will find the tips above most useful if you want to take photos _____.
A. at a wedding ceremony B. while visiting an art gallery
C. on an excursion to the countryside D. while walking on the street in a city

根据第三段“Zooming (聚焦) into plants with frost or picking up water drops on a spider’s web can help show the beauty we might miss in everyday life. (放大到结霜的植物,或者在蜘蛛网上捡起水滴,都有助于展示我们在日常生活中可能错过的美。)”可知,放大拍摄的好处是可能有助于捕捉日常生活中的微妙之美。故选A。
根据最后一段“Keeping the camera stable is key, whether that’s through a solid pose as you stand ready to shoot or using a support. (保持相机稳定是关键,无论是通过一个坚实的姿势,当你准备拍摄或使用支持。)”可知,为了拍出令人满意的照片,摄影师应该拍摄时要站稳。故选D。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Whether you are attracted by landscapes or the after-effects of weather, there are photo opportunities everywhere. The following photography tips from photographers will help you shoot your best shot. (无论你是被风景所吸引,还是被天气的影响所吸引,到处都有拍照的机会。以下摄影师的摄影技巧将帮助你拍出最好的照片。)”可知,如果你想在乡间远足时拍照,你会发现上面的建议非常有用。故选C。
B
Skeptics are a strange lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment, and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.
Perhaps that explain why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much publicity. That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some Industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities though the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.
So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”
Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible (不可信的)”。
A critical (批判的) eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.
4. According to the passage, which of the following may be regarded as “skeptics”?
A. People who agree on the popularity of “eco-guilt”.
B. People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.
C. People who dislike the harmful effect of human activities.
D. People who spread comforting news to protect our environment.
5. Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s books?
A. Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.
B. The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.
C. The author convinces people to seek comforting worldviews.
D. Industry–funded media present confusing information.
6. The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to_____.
A. voice a different opinion
B. find fault with Lomborg’s book
C. challenge the authority of the media
D. point out the value of scientific views.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.
B. To warn the public of the danger of half–blindness with reviews.
C. To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in presenting information.
D. To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.
B 5. A 6. A 7. D
根据第一段中“Skeptics are a strange lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment, and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment.(怀疑论者是一群奇怪的人。他们中的一些人拒绝承认人类活动对环境的严重威胁,他们厌倦了不同意他们的人。怀疑论者说,这些人只传播关于环境的坏消息)”可知,怀疑论者不相信人类对环境的威胁,不相信关于环境的坏消息,所以B项“People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.(他们不相信我们地球的严峻形势)”中的人属于“怀疑论者”。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“That book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, declares that it measures the ‘real state of the world’ as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some Industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities though the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.(《怀疑论的环境主义者》一书宣称,它判断“世界的真实状态”很好。当然,另一种解释是一些有特殊利益的大企业的雄厚财力。事实上,隆伯格的观点与一些行业资助组织的观点相似,这些组织通过媒体开展大型活动,在全球变暖等问题上迷惑公众) ”可推知,Lomborg的书中的观点符合一些大企业的利益,所以得到他们的推崇,这也是Lomborg的书受到欢迎的原因之一。故选A项。
根据第四段“Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s ‘preference for unexamined materials is incredible.’(这种片面的观点应该立即受到挑战。但是只有一篇不同的评论刊登在《自然》杂志上,这是一本有特定读者的受人尊敬的科学杂志。评论称隆伯格“对未经检验的材料的偏爱令人难以置信”)”可推知,作者提到《自然》杂志对Lomborg书中观点的评论就是为了对其提出挑战,发出不同的声音。故选A项。
通读全文并结合最后一段“A critical (批判的) eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blind before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.(一个批判的视角是有其价值的,媒体提供信息的方式应该有助于人们做出明智的决定。
C
We all know that being overweight is not great for your health — it’s linked to metabolic (新陈代谢的) diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular (心血管的) problems. But weighing yourself won’t tell you all you need to know about your disease risk. A friend of mine is a super-fit marathon runner. She’s all lean muscle. And yet according to her body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of weight relative to height, she’s overweight. Which is frankly ridiculous. The BMI is deficient. So what should we be using instead?
First, let’s talk about fat — the most demonized of all body components. Fat is stored in adipose tissue (脂肪组织), which has some really important roles. It conserves energy, maintains our body temperature, and serves as a protective layer for our organs. It also produces a whole host of important substances, from hormones that control our appetite to chemicals that influence the way our immune systems work.
However, not all fat is equal. It’s the visceral fat — the type surrounding your organs — that is thought to be more harmful to your health, if there’s too much of it. Having more visceral fat has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. (That relationship isn’t straightforward either, though; studies have shown that removing this “excess” fat doesn’t improve metabolic health.) Either way, having a good idea of how much fat is in your body, and where it is, would be valuable. It might at least give us some idea of our risk of metabolic disorders. There are quite a few different ways of measuring this.
BMI is the most widely adopted. It’s the official measure the World Health Organization uses to define overweight and obesity. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you very much about the fat in your body or how it corresponds to your health. After all, your body weight includes your bones, muscles, blood, and everything else, not just your fat. Instead, Emma Börgeson, who studies cardiometabolic disease at Aarhus University in Denmark, and her colleagues recommend the SAD measure, a measure of the size of a person’s belly from back to front.
8. What does the underlined word “deficient” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Faulty. B. Accurate. C. Essential. D. Worthless.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The types of fat. B. The impact of fat.
C. The functions of fat. D. The composition of fat.
10. What can be inferred about the visceral fat?
A. It is the most harmful fat in the body.
B. Too much of it may lead to health issues.
C. It is closely related to metabolic disorders.
D. Removing it can lower the risk of diseases.
11. What might be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A. The comparison between the SAD and other measures.
B. The advantages of using the BMI over other measures.
C. Personal experiences about the weight loss journeys.
D. Detailed explanations of the alternative method SAD.
A 9. C 10. B 11. D
和后文的“So what should we be using instead?(那么我们应该用什么来代替呢?)” 故选A项。
根据第二段第二句“Fat is stored in adipose tissue (脂肪组织), which has some really important roles. (脂肪储存在脂肪组织中,它有一些非常重要的作用。)”可知,这一段主要在讲脂肪的功能。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第二句“It’s the visceral fat—the type surrounding your organs—that is thought to be more harmful to your health, if there’s too much of it. (内脏脂肪——那种围绕着你器官的脂肪类型——被认为如果过多,对你的健康更有害。)”可知,过多的内脏脂肪可能会导致健康问题。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“Instead, Emma Börgeson, who studies cardiometabolic disease at Aarhus University in Denmark, and her colleagues recommend the SAD measure, a measure of the size of a person’s belly from back to front. (相反,丹麦奥胡斯大学的艾玛·博格森(Emma Börgeson)及其同事推荐使用SAD测量法,这是一种测量人体腹部从背部到前部大小的方法。)”可知,下文可能会进一步介绍SAD这种测量方法。故选D项。
D
“Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence.” With that, in January 1997, the French coast guard transmitted its final message in Morse code.
Wrecked ships had radioed out SOS signals from the era of the Titanic. In near-instant time, the beeps could be decoded by Morse-code stations thousands of miles away. First used to send messages over land in 1844, Morse code outlived the telegraph age. But by the late 20th century, satellite radio was turning it into a dying language. In February 1999, it officially ceased being the standard for maritime communication.
Nestled within the Point Reyes National Seashore, north of San Francisco, KPH Maritime Radio is the last operational Morse-code radio station in North America. The station — which consists of two buildings some 25 miles apart — once watched over the waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It shut down in 1997, but a few years later, a couple of radio enthusiasts brought it back to life. The group has gotten slightly larger over the years, who call themselves the “radio squirrels”. Every Saturday, they beep out maritime news and weather reports. Much of their communication is with the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a World War II-era ship permanently parked at a San Francisco pier.
Last July, the photographer Ann Hermes visited these “radio squirrels” and stepped into their time machine. To send a message, they tapped each Morse-code letter into a gadget, generating a loud noise that repeated throughout the whole building. “It’s almost like jazz,” Hermes told me — a music of rhythm and timing that can sound slightly different depending on who is doing the tapping. Some of the machines date back to World War II. The “radio squirrels” do their own repairs, and search eBay for replacement parts on the newer units.
Though many of the “radio squirrels” are retired or nearing retirement, Morse code is not quite extinct: The U.S. Navy still teaches it to a few sailors. Besides, in 2017, a British man who had broken his leg on a beach used it to signal for help in the dark with a flashlight.
12. What was Morse code used for in the era of the Titanic?
A. Warning the coming of total silence.
B. Sending a signal for help or rescue.
C. Saving an endangered language.
D. Setting a standard for communication.
13. What does the underlined phrase “radio squirrels” refer to?
A. The former staff of KPH Maritime Radio Station.
B. The crew of ship wreckage in San Francisco.
C. Those particularly passionate about radio stuff.
D. Those expert at playing instruments and jazz.
14. The Morse code machines can still be in good condition thanks to __________.
A. the frequent use by the “squirrels” to beep out news
B. the constant communication with experienced operators
C. the repair and restore efforts made by the “squirrels”
D. the protection and maintenance made by the U.S. Navy
15. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Keep the “Jazz” Going
B. The Last Call from Sea
C. Volunteers of Point Reyes
D. A Farewell to Radio
B 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据第二段中的“Wrecked ships had radioed out SOS signals from the era of the Titanic.(从泰坦尼克号时代起,失事船只就通过无线电发出求救信号)”可知,在泰坦尼克号时代,摩尔斯电码被用来发送求救信号。
根据划线短语前的“who call themselves”可知,radio squirrels指代的是themselves,再根据句中的“The group has gotten slightly larger over the years”和前一句中的“a few years later, a couple of radio enthusiasts brought it back to life”可知,这个群体是一群无线电爱好者。
根据第四段中的“The “radio squirrels” do their own repairs, and search eBay for replacement parts on the newer units.(“无线电松鼠”自己修理,并在eBay上搜索较新设备的更换部件)”可知,由于“无线电松鼠”的修理和修复工作,摩尔斯电码机器依然运转良好。
通读全文,尤其是第四段中的““It’s almost like jazz,” Hermes told me — a music of rhythm and timing that can sound slightly different depending on who is doing the tapping.(Hermes告诉我:“这几乎就像爵士乐。”这是一种有节奏的音乐,根据敲击者的不同,听起来可能略有不同)”和最后一段“Though many of the “radio squirrels” are retired or nearing retirement, Morse code is not quite extinct: The U.S. Navy still teaches it to a few sailors. Besides, in 2017, a British man who had broken his leg on a beach used it to signal for help in the dark with a flashlight.(尽管许多“无线电松鼠”已经退休或即将退休,但摩尔斯电码并没有完全灭绝:美国海军仍将其教给少数水手。此外,2017年,一名在海滩上摔断腿的英国男子在黑暗中用手电筒发出求救信号)”可知,本文主要介绍了摩尔斯电码的用途、历史和复兴,文中指出摩尔斯电码像爵士乐。由此可知,A项“让“爵士乐”继续下去”最适合作本文标题。故选A。

I was twenty then, teaching a class of thirty students in Toronto including Mike, a 10-year-old street kid. Having lost his father and mother, he lived with a mentally-disturbed grandmother.
He was always hungry, so each day I’d take him for breakfast before class. Each noon after I shared my lunch with him, I taught him new skills—using a microscope, constructing a camera etc.
One day Mike told me of his dream. Most kids in the class wanted to be doctors, teachers or some such thing, but not Mike! His desire was to be a gangster (强盗)! And he was serious about it.
I believed all children had a gift for what he wanted to be. If he wanted to be a gangster I’d do all I could to help him become the very best “gangster”.
I had a plan. Every Saturday after we had breakfast, I took him to the Law Library of the city. I explained to him a good gangster had to know something about criminal law, and reading up on law was the only way to learn. His young mind was interested, and he dove in.
That was how we spent each Saturday morning that year. I’d drop him off at the law library. Three hours later, I’d return, pick him up for lunch and after a review of his morning’s work, take him home.
The following year I taught in another school far away, which prevented me continuing to participate physically with him on Saturday mornings. But I provided him with public transportation tickets so he could keep up his regular study at the library.
Later I got married and moved to London. Sadly, and to my great regret, I lost contact with Mike.
Years passed. I often thought of him, wondering what had become of him. Then, one day, I was back in Toronto on business, looking up the number of a former colleague in the telephone directory, and there, Mike’s name as part of a title of “JUDGES and LAWYERS” danced off the page into my eyes.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I wondered, “Could it be him?”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When we were able to get together, he told me his road to the law.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I wondered, “Could it be him?” I dialed the number, gave my full name to a secretary and was put on hold. A long fifteen seconds later, a gentleman was on the line. His opening statement was, “Mr. Kowal (or whatever), I’ve really … missed you.” Then there was silence. Tears welling up in my eyes, I blurted out between sobs, “Mike, I only wish I’d kept in touch with you all these years. I’m really proud of you.” In a trembling voice on the other side, Mike answered, “I wouldn’t be here now if it weren’t for you.”
When we were able to get together, he told me his road to the law. Studying law in the library enabled him to explore his inner depths—the “gangster” he had wanted to be was something of a hero protecting the disadvantaged with knowledge. He studied all the way to the law university while working part-time for his education fees. Now he had risen to be one of the most successful criminal lawyers in Canada. He owed all to me while I thought the greatest good we teachers could do for the students was to assist in revealing the best of their own.

2 What is a photographer recommended to do to shoot satisfactory photos?
A People who agree on the popularity of “eco-guilt”.

If he wanted to be a gangster, I’d do all I could to help him become the very best “gangster”.
The following year I taught in another school far away which prevented me continuing to participate physically with him on Saturday mornings.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I wondered, “Could it be him?”
