Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York. He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag(时差); it was that Monday morning always began with a team meeting and, over the months, he had grown to hate them.
Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden agenda(会议议程); they indulged in (沉溺于) game playing; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough - there was all the moaning afterwards at the meeting like“I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn’t going to say.”
As this morning’s meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But, as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. But as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer.
He realized, to his amazement, that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations. They were not supporting views which they thought might be popular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas.
Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions, based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying. “So, John, are you really saying…” “Susan, do you really think that?” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward?” They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly-acquired talent.
As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.
The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.”“All meetings should be like that.”“In future, I’m going to say what I think.”
41. It is known from the first paragraph that Martin .
A. just came back from his business trip in New York
B. was found to suffer from a serious heart disease during the trip
C. had a good time during his fortnight’s stay in New York
D. didn’t like his work in his London office
42. Why did Martin hate his company’s team meeting?
A. Because it had to be held every Monday morning.
B. Because he was tired of hosting such a meeting
C. Because he couldn’t control the meeting that was out of order.
D. Because the meeting atmosphere wasn’t open and trusting.
43. The underlined part“his newly-acquired talent” in Paragraph 5 means that he could
A. still hear the engine noise of the plane though he was back
B. clearly predict what the members of the meeting would say
C. actually control the thoughts of the members of the meeting
D. encourage the members to express their thoughts in words
44. What do we know about this Monday morning’s meeting from the passage?
A. Martin made people say what they were thinking immediately the meeting began.
B. Martin was angry at the dullness of the meeting at the beginning of the meeting.
C. Martin led people to express their real thoughts with the meeting progressing.
D. Many members of the meeting played games and told lies at the meeting all the time.
45. It is inferred from the last two paragraphs that towards the end of the meeting Martin would hear such words as“ ”.
A. I was thinking of making a suggestion-but I couldn’t be bothered
B. I have got an idea on how we could take this forward. I think we should...
C. The usual people say the usual things, so I have no other new ideas
D. I could have imagined on that idea, but I wasn’t willing to say that
C
Scientists have created by accident an enzyme (酶) that breaks down plastic drinks bottles. The breakthrough could help solve the global plastic pollution crisis by enabling for the first time the full recycling of bottles.
The new research was prompted by the discovery in 2016 of the first bacterium that had naturally evolved to eat plastic at a waste dump in Japan. Scientists have now revealed the detailed structure of the crucial enzyme produced by the bug.
An international team then adjusted the enzyme to see how it had evolved, but tests showed they had accidentally made the molecule even better at breaking down the plastic used for drinks bottles. “What actually turned out was we improved the enzyme, which was a bit of a shock,” said head researcher Prof. McGeehan, at the University of Portsmouth, UK.
Currently, the enzyme takes a few days to start breaking down the plastic, far faster than the centuries it takes in the oceans, but the researchers are optimistic this can be speeded up even further and become a practical large-scale process.
“What we are hoping to do is use this enzyme to turn this plastic back into its original components, so we can literally recycle it back to plastic,” said McGeehan. “It means we won’t need to dig up any more oil and, fundamentally, it should reduce the amount of plastic in the environment.”
About 1 million plastic bottles are sold each minute around the globe and, with just 14% recycled, many end up in the oceans where they have polluted even the remote parts, harming marine life and potentially people who eat seafood. “Plastic is incredibly resistant to decomposition,” one of these wonder materials that has been made a little bit too well.
Currently those bottles that are recycled can only be turned into not transparent fibres for clothing or carpets, while the new enzyme indicates a way to recycle old clear plastic bottles back into new clear plastic bottles.
“You are always up against the fact oil is cheap, so plastic is cheap,” said McGeehan. “It is so easy for manufacturers to generate more of that stuff, rather than even try to recycle, but I believe there is a public interest here: attitude is changing so much that companies are starting to look at how they can properly recycle these bottles.”
Prof. Adisa Azapagic, at the University of Manchester in the UK, agreed the enzyme could be useful but added: “A full life-cycle assessment would be needed to ensure that the technology does not solve one environmental problem — waste — at the expense of others, including additional greenhouse gas emissions.”
46. What do we learn from the passage about an enzyme scientists have created?
A. It was identified during a lab experiment accident.
B. It may make full recycling of plastic bottles a reality.
C. It was a breakthrough made with persistent efforts.
D. It may motivate a dramatic reform in plastic industry.
47. What does the passage say about the bug that produces the important enzyme?
A. It has a natural ability to consume plastics.
B. It is a bacterium that reproduces at a high rate.
C. It is essential to the recycling of plastic bottles.
D. It has a chemical structure unknown to scientists.
48. By adjusting the enzyme produced by the bug, the scientists ________.
A. made it more effective by chance
B. altered its basic molecular composition
C. discovered an extraordinary chemical
D. found its evolutionary process sped up
49. What does Prof. McGeehan say about the recycling of plastic bottles?
A. Manufacturers are implementing it on an increasingly larger scale.
B. It generates huge business opportunities for plastic manufacturers.
C. It has aroused persistent interest among the general public.
D. Manufacturers are beginning to explore ways of doing it.
50. What is Prof. Adisa Azapagic’s attitude towards the application of the enzyme?
A. Supportive. B. Skeptical. C. Indifferent. D. Enthusiastic.
D
When someone asks us “what do you do?” we nearly always reply with our job. Work, for many of us, is much more than a job. It is the defining part of our identity. For many of us it is through our job that we can define ourselves.
“Without my job I don’t know who I am,” is a sentence that has been said on more than a few occasions from my office chair. Indeed, it can be one of the most difficult parts I work on with clients who have lost or been made to change their jobs. This loss causes an identity crisis much greater than the loss of the job itself.
One of the things I have come to understand, however, is that our identity is much more than we might notice at first. If we take the time to think, we might recognize that as well as our work we can also see ourselves as a friend, a husband or wife, a son or daughter, a parent, a member of a sports team or religious group. We may recognize that we feel and act differently in these roles and relationships than we do at work. The passive daughter becomes a confident leader at work. Furthermore, our identities at work are not fixed. They change over time. I myself have been a shop assistant, a waitress, a student, a graduate, and a clinical psychologist. At each stage my ability to adapt to and develop my career identity has been very important to my happiness. While we like to remove uncertainty in our lives, at some level we have to deal with uncertainty, especially in today’s changeable and always-shifting job market.
How we see ourselves is central to the issue of our identity. When we tell ourselves “I’m good at starting projects but not so great at finishing them” it can become part of our belief system. But if you have the unlucky experience of a forced job change you will need to examine those beliefs to see how based in reality they are. You will need to ask yourself how helpful these beliefs are and think about personal change. We can change our beliefs, behaviours and emotional experience at any time through trying out new things, practice and conscious self-control. In an age where career development may lead us into new areas it is more and more important to question our sense of self and explore whether you can create a new experience of your identity by changing the beliefs you have about yourself in order to widen your career choices. Ultimately it is you who define who you are. You are only your job if you let it be so.
51. What do we learn from the passage about one’s loss of a job?
A. It forces them to visit a clinical psychologist.
B. It offers them a chance to play different roles.
C. It makes them confused about who they are.
D. It forces them to redefine their life’s goals.
52. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. People’s work identities remain the same throughout their lives.
B. One’s identity consists of multiple roles beyond work and changes over time.
C. Being a passive family member helps one become a confident work leader.
D. The author’s career changes made her unable to adapt to new environments.
53. What do we have to do in today’s ever-changing job market?
A. Strive to develop our social identity.
B. Prepare for different career paths.
C. Try to be confident at all times.
D. Learn to deal with uncertainty.
54. What should we do to expand our career options?
A. Change our perceptions of ourselves.
B. Compare various job opportunities.
C. Look into newly emerging fields.
D. Exercise self-discipline consciously.
55. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Job Loss and Its Influence on Career Advancement.
B. Identity: Beyond Just Your Occupation.
C. How to Thrive in Various Jobs at the Same Time.
D. Why Job Changes Demand Giving Up Personal Beliefs.

Kobe Bryant wasn't the first NBA player to visit China. But he was the first player to help China grow into a basketball-crazed nation.
Kobe's first visit was in 1998, and in conducting basketball clinics (篮球训练营),doing business and participating in charity, he was warmly welcomed in the basketball-loving country. Once, nearly 15,000 people showed up at 9 am for an event at which Kobe was scheduled to appear at 4 pm.
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo saw firsthand Kobe's popularity during Kobe's time with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when as captain he led the team to a gold medal. "There were tens of thousands of people on the streets, yelling, 'Kobe! Kobe!' It was unbelievable, just unbelievable," Colangelo said.
"It's harder for me to walk around here than in the United States," Kobe once told reporters in China in 2013. “It's uncontrollable. Fans rush you and surround you, and it gets to the point where you can't go out."
His last visit was in August last year for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. He told reporters, “I watched the country develop from the ground up. I watched Beijing grow. I watched the passion for the game develop. My goal is to develop the country's basketball to a level where they can compete with the best basketball countries in the world,", Kobe said.
Kobe was and perhaps remains China's favourite NBA player, and fans in the country were shocked by his death in a helicopter crash in January this year. Tencent, the NBA's digital partner in China, posted a memorial page that drew more than five million visitors in less than five days.
Just two days before Kobe died, he posted a short video on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, wishing Chinese fans a happy new year. How sorrowful his fans are when they watch the video again!

B. was found to suffer from a serious heart disease during the trip

48. By adjusting the enzyme produced by the bug, the scientists ________.
A. made it more effective by chance
B. altered its basic molecular composition
C. discovered an extraordinary chemical
D. found its evolutionary process sped up
49. What does Prof. McGeehan say about the recycling of plastic bottles?
A. Manufacturers are implementing it on an increasingly larger scale.
B. It generates huge business opportunities for plastic manufacturers.
C. It has aroused persistent interest among the general public.
D. Manufacturers are beginning to explore ways of doing it.
50. What is Prof. Adisa Azapagic’s attitude towards the application of the enzyme?

【答案】51. C 52. B 53. D 54. A 55. B

AI and Learning: A Survey Among Peers
Our recent survey of 500 high school seniors conducted by our research group revealed striking differences in attitudes toward AI-assisted learning among senior three students. About 65% believe AI improves efficiency by helping with grammar checks, problem explanations, and knowledge review. However, 35% worry about over-reliance and dishonesty, while 25% remain neutral due to limited experience.
Supporters value AI’s convenience and personalized support, especially during self-study. Critics fear it may weaken independent thinking or lead to plagiarism. Some also question the accuracy of AI-generated content.
Personally, AI is a useful tool if used responsibly. It offers instant feedback and broadens learning resources. But we must balance its use with critical thinking. Schools should guide students on ethical and effective AI use, ensuring it supports rather than replaces real learning.
