In today's always-on world, work doesn't end when you leave the office. Instead, emails, texts and notifications often follow us home, 1. (demand) attention after hours. It's tempting to think, “Well, I'm just answering a quick email,” but work-related communication after hours is rarely just one message. It creates a culture where we feel obliged to respond, slowly eroding the boundary between work and personal time. Staying 2. (connect), but research reveals that the cost is far 3. (high) than we realize —— for our health, our families and even our performance at work. While connectivity might appear 4. (benefit), allowing flexibility and productivity, it can blur the boundaries between work and personal life, leading to several health issues, including 5. (increase) stress, anxiety and work-life conflict. After all, productivity isn't about working more; it's about working well —— and that means valuing the time we spend outside work just as much as the time we spend on the job.
Work-related smartphone use outside working hours also leads to digital burnout, a form of mental exhaustion fueled by our inability to truly “clock out”. This constant connectivity increases6. (depress) symptoms in workers who feel pressed to stay reachable. It's a7. (remind) that when it comes to work-life balance, we all have a breaking point. The right to disconnect isn't just about taking time off —— it's about creating a healthier,8. (balance) way to work in an increasingly connected world.
III. Read the following passages and finish the exercises (阅读短文,完成练习)
A
One, two, three... Goooooohhh! Slide down the slope. Hit the pool with a splash. Water-slides might seem simple. But every turn and drop is carefully planned. People who design water-slides understand fun... and science. They make sure rides are exciting and safe.
Let's dive into the physics of water- slides. The earth's gravity is what makes slides work. It pulls all objects toward the earth's centre. Water keeps the fun flowing. It makes riders slide more quickly by reducing friction. The body moves more easily against a wet slide.
But speed isn't always exciting. For example, bus passengers on a highway don't squeal “Wheeeeeeee!” Yet they' re travelling about 65 miles per hour. That's the speed of a trip down the world's fast water slide. So why are water- slides more fun than buses? Scientists say people enjoy the feeling of acceleration. It's a change in the speed or direction of an object.
Top- Speed Thrills: Summit Plummet
The steeper the slide, the faster the ride. Summit Plummet is in Florida. This waterslide is 12storeys high. It's so steep riders can't see where they' re going. One moment they' re chiling at the top. seconds later, they' re hurtling downhill at highway speed. That's some super acceleration. Summit Plummet clocks each rider's speed. Many people descend at around 60 miles per hour. Riers go down at different speeds. Size affects how a human body travels on a slide. So does the way a rider sits. Designers use computers. They do a lot of testing. They make sure rides will be safe for different people.
High- Tech Turns: Space Twister
Want to plunge into another world? Try the Space Twister in Austria.骑ers wear virtual reality headsets. They pick an adventure. They can blast through outer space. Or they can voyage through dragons' caves.
The Space Twister is a curvy slide.骑ers whip side to side through turns. They feel the thrill of acceleration. Their bodies bank around corners. That means they glide up the sides of the slide. Its shape must be designed to keep different riders safely inside.
Sliding into the Future
Designers continue to dream up new water- slide wonders. The Scorpio's Tail is in Wisconsin. Riders zip through loops. The loops are almost vertical. The Slide Wheel in China spins like a Ferris wheel. Riders zoom through its water- slide tubes as the wheel turns.
Is there a water- slide you'd like to ride that hasn't been built? Study physics. You could be in line for a job as a water- slide designer.

The Double- Edged Sword of Digital Life
In the 21st century, digital life has become inseparable from our daily routines, driven by the latest technologies like Bluetooth, AI and advanced smartphone systems. These innovations redefine how we work, socialize and access information, offering unparalleled 1. a —— yet also posing significant challenges.
One major advantage of digital life is convenience. Smartphones act as pocket- sized hubs, allowing instant 2. c to global networks. AI assistants simplify tasks, from setting reminders to controlling smart home devices. Meanwhile, wireless technologies such as Bluetooth enable seamless connection between gadgets, eliminating tangled wires. For professionals, cloud- based tools let them type reports or collaborate remotely, boosting 3. p
However, the disadvantages of this hyper-connected existence cannot be ignored. Over- reliance on digital tools erodes face- to- face interactions, fostering loneliness. 4. C notifications from smartphones fragment attention spans, while excessive screen type activities strain physical and mental health. Privacy risks also loom large; many users remain unaware of how their data is harvested and exploited by corporations or hackers.
Moreover, the environmental cost of the latest tech is often overlooked. Frequent 5. u of smartphones and gadgets generate e- waste, polluting ecosystems. Even AI, despite its efficiency, consumes massive energy, contributing to carbon footprints.
To navigate digital life wisely, balance is key. Staying 6. a of both its benefits and pitfalls allows us to harness AI and Bluetooth innovations responsibly. Limiting screen time, securing personal data, and supporting sustainable tech practices can mitigate disadvantages.
In conclusion, digital life offers transformative (有改革能力的) advantages but demands mindful engagement. By embracing technology without surrendering to its downsides, we can shape a future where connection empowers rather than isolates.

What Do You Say at the Altar?
Let ChatGPT Decide
Molly Price and Erik Sorensen are getting married in October. AI is helping with the details. The couple used ChatGPT and other AI assistants to help write promises and a website.
Price said that the AI tools have helped ease some of her pre- wedding stress. Molly Price, a 28-year- old customer- experience coordinator from Denver is getting married to her fiancé, Erik Sorensen, at the end of October. But ChatGPT knows that already.
The couple got engaged last December after meeting at a summer camp six years ago, where Price was a camp photographer and Sorensen was a counsellor and tennis instructor. 1. Those qualities sit at the heart of everything the couple has written in preparation for the wedding -from the text of their wedding website, to their toast speeches, to the promises they'll recite to each other. And they've outsourced almost 90% of that writing to AI.
A few months ago, Price began testing out AI tools like ChatGPT and the Writer's Block Assistant, a free content- creation tool launched in March by Joy, a wedding platform that allows couples to design wedding websites and invitations and build a registry.
2. “I mean, we've been together for a while. We've been through a lot, so there' re a lot of things that I want to include,” she said. “It's kind of a Frankenstein culmination for me.”
She's using the Writer's Block Assistant to generate the initial text. Unlike ChatGPT, which is designed to field an unlimited set of questions, 3. because it offers a structured set of questions about the content of the promises and the tone. The tool is accessible via Joy's website and uses OpenAI's technology to draft “wedding-related wordage” as the company describes it.
Users input the type of text they' re looking for help with, whether that's their promises, a love story for their wedding website, or even thank- you notes. 4. , or the story it will highlight and their preferred style of writing.
Then, Price is running that text through ChatGPT to add humour, voice and colour.“I use ChatGPT to kind of change the tone- of- voice and make it a little less robotic, which is weird because it's coming from AI,” Price said. She added that ChatGPT also offers more facility with editing text, whether that's by pointing out sections to cut, or suggesting areas that could use more details.
AI tools have helped Price streamline her thoughts and turn them into a written product, which has also eased some of her wedding planning anxiety. “essentially, to me, coming up with a speech felt like having a big research paper, so it definitely took the stress away from that,” Price said.5.
And Price is apparently not alone. According to an online questionnaire Joy conducted in February through its Instagram story that surveyed more 1,350 people—— both users and non- users of the platform —— 89% of respondents found it “somewhat overwhelming” to begin writing their wedding materials.
Fill in the blanks with the proper sentences(用适当的句子填空)
A. Price prefers Joy’ s Al assistant as a starting point.
B. Words aren't her strong suit, especially in front of a crowd.
C. Price describes their relationship as “fun, supportive and a little bit chaotic”.
D. Then they' re asked to enter information about the context.
E. Price is now using ChatGPT and Joy’ s AI assistant to write the vows she’ ll recite to Sorensen on their wedding day.

【重点详解】
1. be about to do sth.. .. when...
补充完整为 While (he is) young。
V. 1. no matter where 2. What did, visit
