Distance or Face-to-face Learning—What’s the Difference?
Although many people think it is a modern phenomenon, distance learning has been around for at least 200 years in one form or another.
When comparing the two systems, the first and most obvious area to focus on is the way that learning is delivered. Distance learning is heavily dependent on technology, particularly the Internet. ___47___ In comparison, when learning remotely, technology is the principal means of communication. The flexibility this provides means that students may be better able to learn at their own pace, following their own timetable, but it may also mean that learners have to be well-organized and self-disciplined. They must therefore be highly motivated in order to do well on the distance learning courses.
___48___ Namely, the teacher is the “knower”, and is responsible for helping students understand the key components of the course. However. the nature of the relationship may differ slightly within the two modes of delivery. With face-to-face learning, the teacher and student have the opportunity to develop a personal relationship through lectures, seminars and tutorials. This is different from a distance-learning course, where the teacher may seldom or indeed never actually meet the student. This may make it hard for teachers to understand their learners’ specific learning needs.
___49___ Generally, students like to meet regularly and talk to people on the same course. However, this kind of interaction on a distance-learning course is less common. Although people can increasingly interact through online conversations and message boards, there is a significant difference between virtual and real interaction. Time and geography must also be considered when contrasting these two types of learning. Face-to-face learning must take place in real-time and in one location. ___50___
In conclusion, it is difficult to state whether one form of learning is better than another, as they cater for different audiences. ___51___, and that there are strong similarities between the two systems, which can both produce positive results.
A. What is important to understand is the different ways in which they operate.
B. Conversely (相反地), distance learning can happen at any -time and in any location, since the learning is not restricted (受限制的) by geography.
C. On a face-to-face course, students may only require a computer for the purpose of writing an essay.
D. The technological advances of the past 20 or so years have meant that distance learning is now able to compete with face-to-face learning as a credible alternative
E. For many students, interaction with their peers is one of the best aspects (方面) of university education.
F. In terms of the teacher-student relationship, the core (核心) principles remain the same.

Since finishing my studies at Harvard and Oxford, I’ve watched one friend after another land high-ranking, high-paying Wall Street jobs. On the surface, these people seem to be very lucky in life. What should we put the blame on?
Most scientists who study Earth's climate agree that the planet is warming, and they blame the greenhouse gases that accumulate(积累)in the atmosphere and prevent heat from escaping. Since the dawn of Industrial Age, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have soared(飞涨)because people have burned ever-increasing quantities of fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas. The International Energy Agency predicts that unless the world adopts greener technologies, the global demand for energy will increase at least 50 percent by 2030. Fossil fuels will remain the major source of energy, IEA predicts, and will provide more than 80 percent of the additional power needed to keep up with the growing demand.
Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have risen rapidly. Two-thirds of that increase has occurred in the past 50 years. Today, human activity pumps 7 billion tons of carbon into the air every year. That’s more than triple(三倍)the amount spewed(喷涌)into the air in 1955. Many scientists fear that as the world's population increases and economic development speeds, carbon dioxide levels will skyrocket.
In June, the National Research Council, which is part of the National Academy of Sciences, reported that the climates in the last ten years of the 20th century were warmer than any period in the past 400 years, and possibly in the past millennium( 一千年).The warmer temperatures are causing ice sheets to melt in Antarctica. Scientists blame global warming for a worldwide loss of glaciers. And some studies have connected global warming to fiercer hurricanes and unusually extreme droughts, heat waves and floods.

3. In 1955, the amount of carbon dioxide spewed into the air might be __________.
A. about 2.3 billion tons
B. about 21 billion tons

We have every reason to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but manners on the roads are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel. It is very well, again, to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog, the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule. Perhaps the situation calls for a "Be Kind to Other Drivers 55 campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when they are faced with uncivilized behavior. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modem traffic conditions. But such acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently to allow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic; or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, says it will help if motorists learn to correctly get into traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper. Unfortunately, modem motorists can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of boatmanship. Years ago the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give- and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
Answer the following questions in COMPLETE sentences.
1.What is a man probably doing when he is behind the wheel?
2.What kind of responses are recommended if other drivers show politeness to you?
3.Acknowledgements of politeness such as a friendly nod happen very often every day, don’t they?
4.What may happen to the old ladies mentioned in the 3rd paragraph?
5.According to the passage, what does the veteran driver advise the motorists to do?

Once there was a king who wanted to find the answers to what he considered the three most important questions in life. The three questions are: when is the right time for every action, who are the most important people, and what is the most important thing to do? The king consulted learned men, promising he would richly reward anyone who could answer the questions, but their answers didn’t satisfy him. In the end, he decided to visit a wise hermit who lived in the woods. The hermit would speak only with common people, so the king put on simple clothes.
When he got close to the hermit’s hut, he ordered his bodyguards to wait behind. He approached the place and found the hermit digging. He asked the wise man his three questions, but the hermit didn’t respond. Seeing how old and weak the hermit was, the king began helping him dig. The king dug for hours, but the hermit never answered his questions. Just as the king was about to leave, a wounded man came running to the hut and fainted before them. Then the king carried the wounded man to Hermit’s hut and took care of him. The king was exhausted and fell asleep as well. When he awoke, he talked with the man, who said that he had wanted to kill the king but was wounded by his bodyguards. He asked for forgiveness and promised to serve the king faithfully.
Afterwards, the king went outside and repeated his questions to the hermit once more. The hermit replied, “If you had not helped me dig earlier, you would have left and been killed by the man. So, the most important man back then was me, and the most important time was when you were digging. The most important thing to do was to be kind to me. When the wounded man arrived, he was the most important person, and saving him was the most important thing. By doing so, you made peace with an enemy.” The king finally had his three answers. The most important time is the present, as it’s the only time we have the power to act. The most important person is the one you are with, and the most important thing is always to be kind.

A. with...for B. with...of C. for...with D. of...with
【答案】A
固定搭配是“compete with someone for something”(与某人竞争某物)。这里,“with each other”表示“相互竞争”,“for a new position”表示“为了新职位”。 B. “with...of”错误,因为“compete of”不成立;C. “for...with”顺序颠倒,意思混乱;D. “of...with”同样不合逻辑。
2.What salad dressing _______ your salad, madam?
A. do you care for B. would you like on C. do you love in D. would you care at
A. “do you care for”意思是“你喜欢”,但不够礼貌正式;C. “do you love in”和D. “would you care at”中的介词“in”和“at”都不适合描述“沙拉酱在沙拉上”的位置。
3. The waiter is standing beside our table and is ready to _______our orders now.
A. get B. bring C. take D. give
A. “get”太笼统,不特指点单过程;B. “bring”意思是“端来/上菜”,但这里是“准备接受点单”,还未到上菜阶段;D. “give”意思是“下命令”,不符合顾客-服务员关系。

A. on...of B. from...by C. about...on D. of...from
【答案】A

A. It's bad manner to play with food.
B. His mother makes him to do housework at weekends.
C. I’d like to hear your suggestions about ways of learning English well.
D. The children helped their mother with setting the table.
A. “It's bad manner to play with food.”
B. “His mother makes him to do housework at weekends.” – 错误,动词“make”在表示“使役”时后接动词原形,不加“to”,正确应为“makes him do”。
D. “The children helped their mother with setting the table.”
6. A: Would you like to come with us? B:_______.
A. No, I wouldn't love to.
B. Sorry, I’d love to, but Fm busy.
C. No, I don’t like to.
D. Yes, I’d like.
正确理由:英语中婉拒邀请需礼貌:先表达意愿(I’d love to),再解释原因(but I'm busy),"Sorry" 增加歉意。
A. "No, I wouldn't love to." – 生硬不礼貌,且"wouldn't love to" 不自然(通常用"wouldn't like to")。
C. "No, I don’t like to."
D. "Yes, I’d like." – 语法错误,缺少"to"(应为"Yes, I’d like to.")。
7. I’m really concerned ________ what your New Year’s _______is.
A. for … decision
B. about … resolution
C. with … resolution
D. about … revolution
固定搭配:"concerned about"(关心/担忧某事),"New Year’s resolution"(新年决心)是标准短语。
A. "for … decision" – "concerned for" 指“担心某人安危”(如concerned for your health),不匹配;“decision”(决定)与新年语境不符。
C. "with … resolution" – "concerned with" 意为“与...相关”,但表示“关心”时必用"about"(如:I'm concerned about climate change)。
8.There are few people on the street during the pandemic, _______?
A. is there B. are there C. are few people D. is few people

D. Carbon dioxide level has nothing to do with economic development.
3. In 1955, the amount of carbon dioxide spewed into the air might be __________.
A. about 2.3 billion tons
B. about 21 billion tons
C. 3.57 billion tons

1.A man is probably driving a car and inconsiderate behind the wheel.
2.Response such as a friendly nod or a wave of acknowledge meant are recommend if other drivers show politeness.
3.No,acknowledgements of politeness don’t happen very often every day.
4.The old ladies may be hit by oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time.
5.The veteran driver advise the motorists to learn to correctly get into traffic teams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper.
Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel."("最友善的人开车时也会变成怪兽")"the rude and inconsiderate driver"("粗鲁、不顾及他人的司机")
"Behind the wheel" 直译为"在方向盘后",即驾驶状态。原文强调驾驶会让人变得野蛮无礼(monsters),暗示此时人常表现出攻击性。
2.题目意图:询问对他人礼貌行为的建议回应方式。
原文依据:"A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill..."("用友好点头或挥手致意回应礼貌行为,有助于营造善意氛围...")
But such acknowledgements of politeness are all too rare today."("但如今这类礼貌回应极其罕见")
"Many drivers... don’t even seem able to recognize politeness."("许多司机甚至无法识别礼貌行为")
"all too rare"(极其稀少)直接否定高频发生。题干"don’t they"为反义疑问,需用No对应事实的否定性。
4. What may happen to the old ladies mentioned in the 3rd paragraph?
答案:They may be hit by oncoming vehicles that cannot stop in time.
"waves a child across... into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time"
"encouraging old ladies to cross... wherever... the dead bodies of these grannies"
原文依据:"motorists learn to correctly get into traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper."("司机应学会逐一正确汇入车流,避免引发愤怒的彻底堵塞")
解析:
关键动作:逐一汇入车流(merge one at a time)

Read the passage and answer the questions. (9%)
