"Nothing special,"she replied.
How was it possible,I asked myself,to walk through the woods and see nothing special?I
who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much
happiness from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight ()And I have imagined what I should

On my second day,I should go to the museums to see man's progress.I should try to explore the spirit of man

Every year,lots of animals around the world go on migrating (joumeys.Some need to find food;
others are looking for somewhere to produce and raise their young.Migrations can be long and difficult for animals,
but new research on birds has found that farmland along the way can help their progress.
In spring, hundreds of thousands of birds living near Lake Poyang,in China, fly north to Siberia,Russia.[1]
On the way, they find places to stop and eat to keep their energy levels up for the long jourey.[2]Some birds,
such as geese, eat young grass that starts to grow at the beginning of the season.[3I This food can last for only a
few weeks. And rising temperatures caused by climate change can sometimes make the grass grow earlier than
usual.[4 As more land is used for farming, the natural wetlands where birds like to search for food are
disappearing,too.
A team of researchers have recently chosen to follow 246 birds, including geese and tundra swans, which are
flying from Lake Poyang to Siberia. They find that the birds have changed their diets to adapt (to the
environments they pass through. As well as eating grass from the wetlands along the way,the birds are also eating
3
seeds(种子)dropped by farmers..
The researchers believe that seeds will become a more important part of migrating birds'diets as more
natural wetlands disappear. They suggest that if farmers use different ways of harvesting, such as using machines
that leave behind more seeds in fields,it could help to feed migrating birds. However, they also say wetlands must
be protected,so the birds can enjoy different foods during their long journeys.

As winter arrives, hands can easily become cold.Thick gloves might be a
good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was
not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to warm their
hands:hand warmers.
There is a folk story about its creation.Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty
traveled to Jiangsu in winter.Because of the cold weather,a local official asked
workers to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. Thus, the hand warmer was
invented.
By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become common among the common people.Skills for making this
tool were widely used during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The use of hand warmers was also recorded by many
poets from that time.
In the early days, copper (was generally used in the making process.People chose it because copper had
more advantages than other materials like silver, iron,or porcelain ()The main reason was that copper could
heat up very well, making your hands feel warm faster.Another point was that a porcelain hand warmer might
break easily if you dropped it.And don't forget the cost because silver was too expensive for most people.Inside
the hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a pleasant smell when
burned.
Ancient hand warmers came in different designs.Round, square, and eight-sided shapes were common, and
there were also some fashionable shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the
warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters
for long life.
37.Was the hand warmer a fine tool for ancient Chinese people to keep their hands warm?
38.What was made for the emperor because of the cold weather?
39.Why was copper generally used in the making process?
40.If you are asked to design a hand warmer as a gift for a foreign friend, what will it look like? Why?

When kids become teenagers,it's harder than ever to be a parent. One of the best ways to teach teens is to
make good house rules. These rules need to let teens have some independence, and also make sure they wehave
well.
How can you make these good house rules?First, let your teen help make the rules. This way, they will be
more likely to follow them. When you make the rules, ask them what they think is important.Try to use some of
their ideas if they are goad..
Don't list every single one you can think of.Instead, pick only the 10 most important ones.Teens can follow
the clear rules easily.I've seen some parents make rules that fill several pagesthis is more like a book than a
simple list.Remember, the rules should be easy to remember and work as a basic guide.
Then, write the rules down and put them in a place where everyone can see them easily. For example, you can
stick them on the fridge. This helps everyone remember. You can change the rules if you need to,but don't change
them too often.
5
Tell your teen clearly what will happen if they break a rule. Also, parents had better not use mean words or do
harmful things as a punishment.For example,don't say,"If you're not home by 11,you can't come back until
momning."Instead, let them do small housework-like cleaning their room-when they don't follow the rules.
If you use these tips to make good house rules and always stick to them, your teen will pehave betrer.Hope
these rules can help your teen become a responsible and independent person!
