If you want to bring your cat along on a weekend break somewhere in the UK, where are the best places to go?
The Redcoats Farmhouse Hotel, Hitchin
The Redcoats Farmhouse Hotel offers home-cooked food and comfortable bedrooms. The historic country house is set in four acres of gardens, with scenic views across Hertfordshire’s countryside. Small pets are allowed, but make sure they are well-behaved. And they are not allowed on the beds. If they cause any extra damage or mess, like mud, then there will be an extra charge.
The Tiggers Cottage, Berkshire
The Tiggers is a beautiful 180-year-old, black and white Tudor cottage located within a moment’s walk of pretty Bray High Street with lovely views over the gardens. Your cat will love the coal fireplace and the owner’s two pet dogs, Sambuca and Truffle, are always on hand to join you for a walk if your cat would rather enjoy the enclosed garden.
The Jack Russel Inn, Andover
The Jack Russell Inn welcomes all forms of four-legged friends. With the natural beauty and wildlife in the surrounding areas, this lovely place also offers local food that celebrates great British produce. Not to mention the warm underfloor heating you and your cat will want to rest on.
The Roast Ox Inn, Wales
Located in Painscastle, Wales, this cat-friendly Inn offers wonderful sights of natural beauty from rivers, forests and mountains, to nearby market towns. The hotel offers bedrooms with super-king sized beds, and a cat Michael, the owner’s pet, who is always on hand to welcome guests.

Simon James is a super-trail runner (越野跑步者) who encourages people to reconnect with nature in the name of exercise. He has completed Super Trail in the Alps, the Andes and the Himalayas. A late-night bet with a client (客户) got him tied to running.
“In 2006, a business client challenged me one evening in a bar to a 36-hour walk across 54 miles of the West Highland Way, and I foolishly said ‘yes’,” James said. “He then rang me the next day to tell me we would be running it.”
At the time, James was 20 kilograms overweight and the longest he had run before that was just under 8 miles, but he managed to finish that run and has never looked back.
According to a report, two-thirds of adults in the U.K. are overweight, one-fifth suffering from depression (抑郁). The huge influence caused by modern lifestyle has worsened these issues. We are aware of the importance of exercise in everyday life, and no amount of virtual meetings can make up for direct social contact. James said, “Only one thing can fix these problems — trail running.”
What is unique about trail running, he explained, is that “it reconnects us to our beautiful nature and connects our physical, mental and spiritual aspects, as well as providing us with an experience which can connect us to other people”.
Inspired, he quit his city life of working 16-hour-plus-days as a banker, and spent more time in trails and mountains.
James is now in charge of the trail running company Run the Wild. He said every run has been a gift following a physical operation in 2015, even though his doctor told that he could hardly run again. He said, “The outdoors is such a great place for us all to experience.”
4. How did Simon James take part in trail running?
A. He was inspired by a friend. B. He tried to deal with his health issue.
C. He made a bet with a client. D. He had a passion for workout.
5 What do we know about trail running?
A. It focuses largely on overweight British people.
B. It has little influence on people’s mental health.
C. It connects people through virtual community.
D. It helps to build the social connection for people.
6. Which word can best describe Simon?
A. Adventurous. B. Sociable. C. Kind-hearted. D. Determined.
7. What can be the best title of this text?
A. A Unique Experience B. Running Wonder
C. A Trail to Nature D. Depression Disorders
C 5. D 6. D 7. C

根据第一段中“A late-night bet with a client (客户) got him tied to running. (深夜和客户打赌让他和跑步扯上了关系)”可知,Simon James参与越野跑是因为他和客户打了个赌。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“What is unique about trail running, he explained, is that “it reconnects us to our beautiful nature and connects our physical, mental and spiritual aspects, as well as providing us with an experience which can connect us to other people”. (他解释说,越野跑的独特之处在于,“它将我们与美丽的大自然重新联系起来,将我们的身体、心理和精神方面联系起来,并为我们提供一种将我们与其他人联系起来的体验。”)”可知,越野跑有助于建立人们的社会联系。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“At the time, James was 20 kilograms overweight and the longest he had run before that was just under 8 miles, but he managed to finish that run and has never looked back. (当时,James超重20公斤,在那之前他跑过的最长距离不到8英里,但他成功地跑完全程,并且从未回头)”和最后一段中“He said every run has been a gift following a physical operation in 2015, even though his doctor told that he could hardly run again. (他说,自从2015年接受手术后,每次跑步都是一份礼物,尽管他的医生告诉他很难再跑步了)”可知,虽然当时身体状况不理想,但Simon James第一次进行长距离越野跑就成功坚持了下来,而且在接受手术后也一直在跑步。由此可知,他是一个意志坚定的人。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Simon James is a super-trail runner (越野跑步者) who encourages people to reconnect with nature in the name of exercise.
C
As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
8. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack.
C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
9. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan. B. Professional background.
C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition.
10. What does Levine’s research find?
A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
11. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
D 9. C 10. A 11. C

China’s newly-released TV show To the Wonder has made Altay (阿勒泰) in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region a new stylish and top-tier tourism destination among young people, who are attracted by the breathtaking views and the simple and heartwarming lives of the local residents.
The travel portal (门户网站) Qunar said that from May 7 — the day the TV show began its commercial airing, flight ticket bookings to Altay rose 20 percent compared with the same period in the previous month, and hotel bookings doubled during the period on its platform. Homestay operating and booking platform Tujia said that bookings for homestays in Altay had surged by 200 percent from May 9 to Wednesday, compared with the same period in April.
Altay enjoys great advantages in developing tourism, including its breathtaking grassland and lake views, and original and well-preserved villages. The place is also a popular skiing destination in winter.
Wei Changren, founder of btiii. com, a tourism-related financial news portal, said that Altay has not become famous overnight, but has long been a destination well-known for its natural beauty. However, it hasn’t been very popular because of long travel times and higher costs of accommodation. Though Altay still lacks the capability to receive large numbers of travelers, Wei believes that the development of its tourism sector enjoys great prospects.
“Altay has different charms in summer and winter, and these distinct seasonal views are attractive to travelers. From my perspective, authorities in Altay can take the hit show as an opportunity and continue developing good tourism and cultural resources to attract travelers. The local tourism infrastructure can also be improved to enhance visitors’ experiences,” he added.
It’s not the first time in recent years that a teleplay has helped turn its location into a popular tourism destination. In January 2023, the TV drama Meet Yourself, starring Liu Yifei and Li Xian, made Dali a trendy tourism destination.
12. How does the writer indicate the booming tourism in Altay in Paragraph 2?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By presenting research.
C. By giving specific examples. D. By listing and comparing figures.
13. What does Wei think of the tourism development in Altay?
A. Promising. B. Depressed. C. Steady. D. Outdated.
14. What does the underlined word “hit” in the fifth paragraph mean?
A. A heated discussion. B. A classic masterpiece.
C. A well-received work. D. A controversial TV drama.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The impact of a new TV drama on tourism.
B. The prosperous tourism and cultural resources.
C. The improvement of local tourism infrastructure.
D. The distinct charms of Altay in different seasons.
D 13. A 14. C 15. A

根据划线词前定冠词“the”可推知,the hit show特指第一段“China’s newly-released TV show To the Wonder has made Altay (阿勒泰) in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region a new stylish and top-tier tourism destination among young people”中提到的电视节目《去有风的地方》。再结合句中“as an opportunity and continue developing good tourism and cultural resources to attract travelers”可知,作者建议阿勒泰当局可以以这一“热门节目”为契机,继续开发良好的旅游和文化资源,以吸引游客。

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym, ” while another read: “___16___” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.

First of all, decide what you want from that person. ___17___ Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. ___18___ If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. ___19___
You and your partner will probably have different skills. ___20___ Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.

根据前文“Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,”(《健身杂志》最近刊登了一篇题为《感谢健身伙伴的五个理由》的文章。一个理由是:“如果你知道有人在健身房等你,你就会去锻炼。”)”以及后文“With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition. (有一个锻炼伙伴,你将会努力训练,因为你们之间有一个微妙的竞争)”可知,空处陈述另一个和别人一起锻炼的理由,故选项应与后文是顺承关系,选项C中的“train with someone else”与后文的“With a workout partner”相对应,选项C“You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.(如果你和别人一起训练,你会更努力)”符合语意。故选C项。
根据前文“First of all, decide what you want from that person. (首先,决定你想从那个人身上得到什么)”和后文“Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?(或者你只是想要身体健康,能够移动的力量和灵活性?)” D“Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport? (你想在你最喜欢的运动项目上成为更好的运动员吗?)”与后文在语意上构成选择关系。故选D项。
【18题详解】
根据前文“You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won't result in a useful response. (你可能会考虑在社交媒体上发布你想要的东西,但可能不会得到有用的回应)”和后文“If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.(如果你打算在健身房锻炼,那个人一定是同一个健身房的)”可知,寻找的锻炼伙伴要具有便利性的特点。选项B中的“live close by”与后文的“belong to the same gym”相对应,选项B“A workout partner usually needs to live close by. (锻炼伙伴通常需要住在附近)”与下文是顺承关系。故选B项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. (我的搭档把她的要求贴在了当地公园的布告栏上。她的注意事项包括她想要做什么样的锻炼,每周多少天,每次培训要花多少小时,以及她的年龄。它还列出了她最喜欢的运动和活动,并提供了她的电话号码)”可知,本段作者以自己的锻炼伙伴为例,说明寻找锻炼伙伴布告所要包括的信息。所以选项G“Any notice for a training partner should include such information. (任何锻炼伙伴的布告都应包括这些信息)”是对上文内容的总结,符合语意。故选G项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“You and your partner will probably have different skills. (你和你的伴侣可能有不同的技能)”和后文“Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other. (久而久之,你们双方都会受益—你的伴侣会举起更多的重量,你也会变得更健康。你们关系的核心是你们永远在一起互相帮助)”可知,要学会求同存异,一起合作,共同提高。选项F中的“differences”对应前文的“different skills”,选项中的“work with each other”对应后文的“be there to help each other”,故选项F“Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other. (接受你们的不同,学会彼此合作)”起到承上启下的作用,符合语意。故选F项。
【点睛】

5. What do we know about trail running?
A It focuses largely on overweight British people.
B. It has little influence on people’s mental health.
C. It connects people through virtual community.
D. It helps to build the social connection for people.
6. Which word can best describe Simon?
A. Adventurous. B. Sociable. C. Kind-hearted. D. Determined.
7. What can be the best title of this text?
A. A Unique Experience B. Running Wonder
C. A Trail to Nature D. Depression Disorders

“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine.

China’s newly-released TV show To the Wonder has made Altay (阿勒泰) in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region a new stylish and top-tier tourism destination among young people, who are attracted by the breathtaking views and the simple and heartwarming lives of the local residents.
The travel portal (门户网站) Qunar said that from May 7 — the day the TV show began its commercial airing flight ticket bookings to Altay rose 20 percent compared with the same period in the previous month, and hotel bookings doubled during the period on its platform. Wei Changren, founder of btiii. com, a tourism-related financial news portal, said that Altay has not become famous overnight, but has long been a destination well-known for its natural beauty.
