Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I learn with my partner to prepare for the University Entrance Exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love nature and animals. I feel quite annoyed at how humans treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer to plant trees and I’m a member of our school’s Nature Club. Samika, Bangladesh Hi! I’m Samika and I’m slim. I wish I were a student, but I’m not. I had to leave school at 13 to help my family. I work in a dress factory. It’s unbelievable hard work and we sweat all day long. Although everyone works hard, my partners and I still find time to practice push-ups and jogging together. At times like these, the world feels like an amazing place. Lila, USA Hi! I’m Lila, an outgoing guy from Chicago. I’m a senior high school freshman. I love my art and debate lectures — they allow me to meet guys who share the same types of view and build up my confidence. After school, I volunteer at a senior center, helping the seniors at their detailed requests. On weekends, I explore the nature with my parents or play soccer with local junior athletes. I live a positive life. Frieder, Germany Hi, Frieder here. I go to a high school in Munich. I’m not very interested in lessons, but I know I have to get an education. It’s very difficult for young people to find a job in Europe, so I am anxious about my future. I’m a gaming lover. I love Internet games so much that I have started a gaming club at my school. They were jealous (妒忌的) because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Tom knew everything — except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people. He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest person to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors to see if it was possible. One day, the doorbell rang. When Tom opened the door, there was his idol — Professor Rosen. Tom was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time, exchanging ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew. “Tom, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun?” the professor wanted to know. There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies.” he said. “That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are — a boy. Boys need to have fun.” The professor talked a bit more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.” The professor left and Tom opened the box. Inside were two baseball gloves and a ball. He tried on a glove and picked up the ball, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. 4. What was Tom’s biggest weakness according to the text? A. He cared too much about grades. B. He was poor at communicating with others. C. He was too proud of his own intelligence. D. He didn’t get on well with his teachers. 5. Why did Tom choose home schooling? A. To stop Tom from being silent. D. To encourage Tom to make friends. 7. What is the main idea of the passage? A. A gifted boy’s dream of entering university early. B. A famous professor’s visit to a young admirer. C. A wise boy is taught an important lesson about life. D. A clever boy learns to value knowledge above everything. C We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days we teenagers are attracted to social networking sites because we can choose who we have around us; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before. A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list. 8. What does the underlined word “conversant” in the second paragraph probably mean? A. Familiar. B. Careful. C. Patient. D. Busy. 9. What might be the reason for teens to refuse their parents’ friend request? A. They have nothing to hide. B. Their privacy cannot be ensured. C. They don’t want to teach their parents. D. They can’t choose friends around them. 10. Why is the survey mentioned in the passage? A. To warn parents. B. To blame parents. C. To challenge parents. D. To comfort parents. 11. What is most likely to be talked about next? A. How to bridge the generation gap. B. How to make friends on social networks. C. How to explain the refusal to parents. D. How to use the social networking sites wisely. D For animals living in the deep ocean, eyesight is useless; sound signals are the way they guide, communicate and search for food. However, this way of life is under threat from human-caused noise. A major source is shipping, which has raised underwater noise by about 3.3 decibels (分贝) every ten years, and the noise from ships is doubling every 11.5 years. Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller (螺旋桨). As the blades (叶片) turn around, low-pressure areas form and create bubbles, a small ball of air or gas in water. When these bubbles break, they produce strong low-rate noise that can travel thousands of meters under water. As a result, this noise troubles sea animals that depend on such rates to communicate. Since about 90% of traded goods are carried by sea, cutting the number of ships is not practical. Making ships more power-saving can help reduce noise, but experts believe such steps are not enough to bring back quiet oceans. Therefore, scientists are developing new technologies to make ships quieter. One solution developed by the researchers at the University of British Columbia is to add flexible materials to blades so that the tips can fold, preventing bubbles from forming and cutting noise. Models show this design could reduce bubble-making noise by 20 decibels. Another way is to increase bubbles instead of reducing them. Dutch researchers have tested blowing bubbles onto a propeller’s blades to soften the resulting noise, which showed a 12-decibel decrease at average ship speed. In order to confirm the effect further, researchers will next apply these methods in real-world settings. With these new technologies, we are looking forward to making the ocean quiet again and protect all living things in the sea. 12. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By presenting a fact. B. By explaining a rule. C. By giving an example. D. By expressing an opinion. 13. What directly causes the underwater noise from ships? A. The blades. B. The propeller. C. The pressure. D. The bubbles. 14. What might be a practical way to reduce underwater noise from ships? A. Making blades with foldable tips. B. Cutting the number of ships. C. Slowing down the ship speed. D. Producing power-saving ships. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards the new ship-noise-reducing technologies? A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent. Many people lack interest in learning new words, for they think it is nothing more than rote memorization ____16____ There are a wide variety of ways you can use to help you truly master new words rather than memorizing them mechanically. Blend (融入) new words into your daily environment. Hang large sheets of blank paper in places you visit often, such as your bathroom or kitchen. Whenever you come across new words, write the words along with their meanings on these pieces of paper. ____17____ You may also draw a simple picture next to each word, so the words on the paper will make a more lasting impression each time you pass it. Make the new words part of your life. ____18____ For example, if you want to learn to use the word “azure”, a bright-blue color, write it into several sentences related to your daily situation: “My new cup is a beautiful azure.” or “My pillow is painted in soft azure.” This way, the word will stick in your mind easily. Turn word-learning into a fun game. The more fun you can make your word-learning time, the more likely you are to keep up this practice. There are a number of free word-learning games available online. ____19____ ____20____ Not everyone has a great memory. So even if you’ve got those words stored in your mind temporarily, you still need constant review. Go over them time and again, so that they will not fade from your mind. Only through repeated revision can you gain confidence in using them. In short, word-building does not have to be tiring work. With proper methods, you can learn new words effectively. A. Revise the words regularly. B. However, that is not the truth. C. Memorize as many new words as possible. D. That way you’ll find yourself frequently noticing them. E. Make the most of them and you will make unexpected progress. F. You want to have somewhere to look up the meaning of the word. G. Peter felt nervous just thinking about it. Mr. Thompson, his English teacher, had encouraged him to enter the speech contest. “Your pronunciation is very good.” he said. But Peter knew he often forgot his lines (台词) in public. Every afternoon, Peter stayed in the empty classroom and practiced alone. He spoke to the silent walls and imagined Mr. Thompson sitting in the front row, nodding. The big day arrived. Peter’s legs were shaking backstage (后台). Through the curtains, he saw a sea of faces. Suddenly, a staff member rushed in. “We need to cut two minutes from each speech!” Peter’s heart sank — his carefully timed lines now had a big hole. He did not know what to cut. He froze (僵住) there. Just then, Mr. Thompson appeared. “Think of it as a chance to adapt to the change.” he said softly. “If you don’t know what to say, you can TELL YOUR STORY.” But Peter’s mind went blank. When his name was called, he stumbled (跌跌撞撞) onto the stage, microphone trembling (颤抖) in his hand. Peter forgot all his lines. With so many eyes fixed on him, his face went red and his throat tightened. He wanted to run from the stage. Then he saw Mr. Thompson looking at him with expectation. Peter took a deep breath and calmed down. He remembered the advice to tell his own story. He began to talk about how he had always been afraid of speaking in public, but how his teacher’s encouragement gave him courage. He spoke about the hours he had practiced alone and how much he wanted to overcome his fear. As he spoke, his confidence grew. He realized he did not need to stick to memorized lines. He could share his true feelings instead. When he finished his speech, a great round of applause filled the hall. He had faced his fear and shared his story. Mr. Thompson came backstage. “You did great, Peter!” he said. “You adapted to the situation and showed your true self. That’s what public speaking is about.” Peter smiled, knowing he had learned a valuable lesson. 47. 根据第一段中“It seemed that Tom knew everything — except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.(汤姆似乎什么都懂——除了一件事。他不知道如何与他人相处)”可知,汤姆最大的弱点是不擅长与他人沟通和相处。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with special teachers.(他让父母相信上学是浪费时间,于是他开始在家接受特殊教师的教育)”可知,汤姆选择在家上学是因为他认为正规学校对他来说没有多大价值。 根据第四段中“There was silence as Tom realised that he didn’t really have any friends.(汤姆意识到自己其实没有任何朋友,随之而来的是沉默)”、第五段中“‌“That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people. And you have to remember to be what you are — a boy. Boys need to have fun.”(“这是个问题,汤姆。你必须明白,世界不仅仅充满思想,还充满人。而且要记住做你自己——一个男孩。男孩需要乐趣。”)”和倒数第二段中“It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you.(这并不简单,你需要另一个人来帮你)”可知,教授设置这个测试是为了让汤姆找个玩伴,从而鼓励他去交朋友。 通读全文,结合第一段中“It seemed that Tom knew everything — except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.(汤姆似乎无所不知——除了一件事。他不知道如何与他人相处)”、第五段中“‌“That’s a problem, Tom. You have to learn that the world is not just filled with ideas. It’s filled with people.(“这是个问题,汤姆。你必须明白,世界不仅仅充满思想,还充满人。”)”和最后一段中“The professor left and Tom opened the box. Inside were two baseball gloves and a ball. He tried on a glove and picked up the ball, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.(教授离开后,汤姆打开了盒子。里面是两只棒球手套和一个球。他戴上手套,拿起球,眼中闪过一丝兴奋)”可知,文章主要讲述了一个只懂学习、不懂与人相处的聪明男孩在罗森教授引导下,认识到生活中还需要朋友和乐趣,被上了一堂重要的人生课。 C We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C 【解析】 【导语】本文主要探讨了青少年是否应该在社交网络上添加父母为好友的问题,分析了青少年的顾虑以及父母的感受,并给出了相关建议。 【8题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. (过去,代沟还包括技术差距,孩子们掌握着最新的科技,而父母则被抛在后面,他们满足于继续过着以往的生活,因为并不需要conversant 技术。)”可知,父母满足于以往的生活,认为自己不需要熟悉、了解科技。所以conversant意为“熟悉的”,与familiar意思相近。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. (我们对隐私有一定的控制权,这是现实生活中得不到的。有时当我们必须接受父母或家庭成员的“好友”请求时,我们会觉得隐私被侵犯了。)”可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的原因是他们的隐私无法得到保障。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.” (一项最近的调查建议,如果孩子忽略了父母的请求,父母不应该太当回事:“当青少年忽略父母的好友请求时,并不一定意味着他们在隐瞒什么,而可能意味着这是他们生活中想要展示独立性的一部分。”)”可知,提到这项调查是为了安慰父母,让父母不要过度担心。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list. (也许当你选择不把父母添加到好友列表时,与父母交谈并给出解释会有助于减轻打击。)”可知,文章接下来最可能谈论的是如何向父母解释拒绝添加好友的原因。 D For animals living in the deep ocean, eyesight is useless; sound signals are the way they guide, communicate and search for food. 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. A 15. B 【解析】 【导语】文章主要说明了深海动物依靠声波生存,但船舶噪音威胁它们。船舶螺旋桨产生的气泡破裂制造水下噪音。减少船只数量不可行,科学家研发新技术抑制气泡,有望降低船舶噪音,保护海洋生物。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“For animals living in the deep ocean, eyesight is useless; sound signals are the way they guide, communicate and search for food. However, this way of life is under threat from human-caused noise. A major source is shipping, which has raised underwater noise by about 3.3 decibels (分贝) every ten years, and the noise from ships is doubling every 11.5 years.(对于生活在深海中的动物来说,视力毫无用处;它们依靠声音信号来导航、交流和寻找食物。然而,这种生活方式正受到人类活动产生的噪音威胁。其中主要来源是航运,每十年海底噪音水平上升约3.3分贝,而船舶噪音每11.5年翻一番)”可知,作者是通过陈述事实来引入话题的。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“When these bubbles break, they produce strong low-rate noise that can travel thousands of meters under water.(当这些气泡破裂时,会产生强烈的低频噪音,可在水下传播数千米)”可知,正是气泡的破裂直接产生了强烈的水下噪音。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“One solution developed by the researchers at the University of British Columbia is to add flexible materials to blades so that the tips can fold, preventing bubbles from forming and cutting noise.(不列颠哥伦比亚大学的研究人员提出的一种解决方案是,在叶片上添加柔性材料,使叶片尖端能够折叠,从而防止气泡形成并降低噪音)”可知,在叶片上添加柔性材料使其尖端可折叠,能有效防止气泡形成并减少噪音,这是一种实用的降噪新方法。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“With these new technologies, we are looking forward to making the ocean quiet again and protect all living things in the sea.(借助这些新技术,我们期待让海洋重新恢复平静,并保护海洋中的所有生命)”可知,“looking forward to(期待)”一词明确表达了作者对这些新技术充满了期待和希望。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many people lack interest in learning new words, for they think it is nothing more than rote memorization (死记硬背). ____16____ There are a wide variety of ways you can use to help you truly master new words rather than memorizing them mechanically. 47. What did Mr. Thompson encourage Peter to do, and why did Peter still feel worried? ____________________________________________________________________________ 48. What problem did Peter meet right before his speech, and why did it trouble Peter? ____________________________________________________________________________ 49. What did Mr. Thompson advise Peter to do when he froze? ____________________________________________________________________________ 50. How did Peter’s feelings change during his speech on stage? ____________________________________________________________________________ 51. What two qualities (品质) can we learn from Peter? Give your reasons. ____________________________________________________________________________ 52. What lesson did Peter learn from this experience? (About 50 words) ____________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】47. Mr. Thompson encouraged Peter to take part in the speech contest. Peter was worried because he often forgot his lines when speaking in public. 48. He was told every speech had to be cut by two minutes. It troubled him because he didn’t know which part of his well-prepared speech should be removed. 49. He advised Peter to regard the unexpected change as a chance to adapt. If Peter didn’t know what to say, he could tell his own story. 50. At first he was nervous and helpless after forgetting lines. Then he calmed down slowly. Finally he became confident as he shared his true story. 51. First, he is hard-working. He practised his speech alone every afternoon. Second, he is brave and adaptable. When he forgot all lines on stage, he calmed down and adjusted his speech to face his fear. 52. (参考) Peter learned that challenges are not overcome by perfect memorization alone. Honesty, courage, and flexibility matter more than avoiding mistakes. When unexpected changes happen, being true to himself and adapting bravely can turn fear into confidence. Sharing his real feelings and personal story connected him with the audience. 【解析】 【导语】这篇文章主要讲述了彼得受邀参加演讲比赛,他本就容易忘词。临上场又被告知要缩短时长,他冷静下来,讲述自身真实经历,克服恐惧,收获掌声并懂得演讲要展现真我。 【47题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第一段中“Mr. Thompson, his English teacher, had encouraged him to enter the speech contest. “Your pronunciation is very good.” he said. But Peter knew he often forgot his lines (台词) in public.( 他的英语老师汤普森先生鼓励他参加演讲比赛。“你的发音非常好,”他说,“但彼得知道自己经常在公开场合忘记台词。”)”可知,汤普森先生鼓励彼得参加演讲比赛。彼得担心的是,他经常在公开讲话时忘记自己的台词。 【48题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第三段中“Suddenly, a staff member rushed in. “We need to cut two minutes from each speech!” Peter’s heart sank—his carefully timed lines now had a big hole. He did not know what to cut.( 突然,一名工作人员冲了进来:“我们得从每篇演讲中删掉两分钟!”彼得的心沉了下去——他精心设计的台词现在有了巨大的漏洞,他不知道该删掉什么。)”可知,彼得被告知每次演讲都必须删去两分钟。这让他感到困扰,因为他不知道自己精心准备的演讲中该删掉哪一部分。 【49题详解】 考查细节理解。根据第四段中““Think of it as a chance to adapt to the change.” he said softly. “If you don’t know what to say, you can TELL YOUR STORY.” But Peter’s mind went blank.(“把它当作适应变化的机会吧,”他轻声说道,“如果你不知道该说什么,那就讲好自己的故事。”但彼得脑子里一片空白。)”可知,汤普森先生建议彼得将意外的变化视为适应的机会。如果彼得不知道该说什么,可以讲述自己的故事。 【50题详解】 考查推理判断。根据第五段“When his name was called, he stumbled (跌跌撞撞) onto the stage, microphone trembling (颤抖) in his hand. Peter forgot all his lines. With so many eyes fixed on him, his face went red and his throat tightened. He wanted to run from the stage.( 当他的名字被喊到时,他踉跄地走上舞台,麦克风在手中微微颤抖。他完全忘记了所有台词。面对众目睽睽,他的脸涨得通红,喉咙也紧得发紧。他恨不得立刻跑下舞台。)”以及第六段中“Then he saw Mr. As he spoke, his confidence grew.( 接着,他看到汤普森先生正满怀期待地注视着他。 根据第二段“Every afternoon, Peter stayed in the empty classroom and practiced alone. He spoke to the silent walls and imagined Mr. Thompson sitting in the front row, nodding.( 每天下午,彼得都独自待在空荡的教室里练习。他对着静止的墙壁说话,想象着汤普森先生坐在前排,点头微笑。)”以及第六段中“Then he saw Mr. As he spoke, his confidence grew.( 接着,他看到汤普森先生正满怀期待地注视着他。 根据文章大意以及最后一段“When he finished his speech, a great round of applause filled the hall. He had faced his fear and shared his story. Mr. Thompson came backstage. “You did great, Peter!” he said. “You adapted to the situation and showed your true self. That’s what public speaking is about.” Peter smiled, knowing he had learned a valuable lesson.( 演讲结束后,全场爆发出热烈的掌声。
