Near-death accidents and summit (登顶) failures have not slowed down mountaineer Saray N’ kusi Khumalo. The Zambia, born mother of two, runs a company, hosts a podcast, has climbed some of the tallest mountains around the world, and still has the time to run a non-profit organization that focuses on education in Africa.
“My grandfather always used to say, ‘if you don’t live a life of service, that’s a life wasted,’” she said. In 2013, she founded Summits With A Purpose in South Africa. With every climb, she raises funds to help build schools and libraries. Khumalo is not going to just climb and take a selfie. She is going to climb and then make a difference.
Not long after her first-ever summit, she turned her eyes toward the world’s tallest peak: Mt. Qomolangma, located in the Himalayas. The first three attempts were tough and heart-breaking for Khumalo: She experienced everything from natural disasters to losing consciousness in the “death zone”, Qomolangma’s top is over 8, 000 meters above sea level, where oxygen is dangerously low.
On May 16, 2019 — her fourth try — she succeeded, becoming the first black African woman to reach the summit. In total, only eight of the 4,000 people who’ve ever summited Qomolangma are Black.
Khumalo is humble about what she’s achieved so far, but she notes, “I don’t think that I’ve broken those fixed views about black people yet; there’s still a lot more work to be done,” adding that representation should extend beyond the mountain tops, too.
“It’s not just about Qomolangma; it is a gift that we need to leave for the next generation wherever we are,” she says, calling on her peers to step outside their comfort zone to show that black people belong in all spaces.
4. What can we know about Khumalo from paragraph 1?
A. She is energetic. B. She suffers from injuries.
C. She loves her family. D. She is struggling with life.
5. Why did she found Summits With A Purpose?
A. To make herself rich. B. To seek excitement from climbing.
C. To raise funds for her climbing. D. To collect money for education.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Saray?
A. gentle and careful. B. Brave and humorous.
C. Caring and determined. D. Creative and generous.
7 What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show respect for mountaineers. B. To introduce a mountaineer pioneer.
C. To introduce a non-profit organization. D. To encourage people to summit Mt. Qomolangma.

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Reserve (保护区), located in India, is the proud and only home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for habitat loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful story — the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them, hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (准确性). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir’s lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.”
Despite the advantages, Banerjee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like SIMBA really shine,” he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals,” he says, “otherwise, all your efforts will be useless.”
8 What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions?
A. Stopping them from being killed. B. Setting up natural reserves.
C. Protecting their living environment. D. Keeping track of them.
9. How does SIMBA help researchers?
A. By providing accurate information. B. By locating lions’ homes.
C. By monitoring the animal stealers. D. By tracking other animals.
10 What’s Banerjee’s opinion about the AI program?
A. It needs to be widely used. B. It has saved the endangered animals.
C. Its possible risks should be considered. D. Its disadvantages can be ignored.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The biggest challenge of an AI system. B. The measures of protecting Asiatic lions.
C. The application of AI on protecting animals. D. An AI program for the endangered Asiatic lions.
D
Many people think that because freezing (冰冻) and then unfreezing food will break down vitamins, frozen vegetables and fruits must be less nutritious than fresh ones.
When fruits and vegetables are picked from plants, they still do things like “breathing”, and over time, their vitamins start to break down. That’s just how nature works. Before fruits and vegetables get to supermarkets or local markets, they have to be carried, stored, and then finally brought to people’s homes. This whole trip often takes a long time, and during this period, their vitamins slowly disappear.
But for frozen fruits and vegetables, right after they're picked, they will be quickly frozen at -8℃. At this temperature, the “breathing” almost stops, and tiny living things can’t grow. Freezing helps keep vitamins in fruits and vegetables safe-it doesn’t hurt them, and it might even help.
Experts from the U. S. Department of Agriculture looked at common things in fruits and vegetables, such as vitamin C, B vitamins, polyphenols, and carotenoids. They checked products sold in markets and found that while frozen and fresh vegetables might have small differences in some things, overall, they’re not that different. In fact, sometimes frozen fruits and vegetables keep more of these vitamins than fresh ones do. Scientists from Sheffield Hallam University in the UK studied 37 kinds of food and found that both frozen green beans and fresh green beans have high levels of beta carotene after being cooked.
For these reasons, international health groups say that both frozen fruits and vegetables and fresh ones are acceptable. The old idea that “frozen fruits and vegetables are low quality” is no longer true.
12. What do we know about picked fruits and vegetables?
A. They stop breathing right away. B. Their vitamins gradually reduce.
C. Their appearance won’t be affected. D. They stop tiny living things growing.
13. What do experts and scientists find about frozen produce?
A. They have more types of vitamins.
B. They are less delicious than fresh ones.
C. They are not quite different from fresh ones.
D. They lose more vitamins than fresh ones once cooked.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards frozen food?
A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Unconcerned. D. Doubtful.
15. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Frozen Food: A Better Choice. B. Frozen Food: Less Safe Than Fresh food.
C. Frozen vs. Fresh: Different Tastes? D. Frozen vs. Fresh: Similar Nutrition?

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
第一节 选词填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
On his seventh birthday, Olly wished he could become invisible whenever he wanted. He thought it would be amazing because he could avoid his parents’ watch. A week later, his sister Lily was born, and Olly’s wish came true — he became invisible. Olly was excited at first, but soon realized that being invisible meant he was often ignored. His parents were always busy with Lily, and Olly felt so lonely and abandoned.
One day, Olly asked his mom to teach him to swim because his class would be doing swimming at school after the holidays. He wanted to be the best. His mom, busy with Lily, told him to ask his dad. His dad, involved in work, also refused. Feeling frustrated, Olly decided to go to school to see what the teachers were doing. He missed the attention he got there and thought the teachers might have time for him. He sneaked out of the house and wandered down the street. He saw Mrs. Cooper, the school secretary, and her dog Teddy. Mrs. Cooper noticed Olly and called him over, worried that he was alone. Olly explained that his parents were too busy with Lily.
Mrs. Cooper took Olly into her garden and showed him her incubator (恒温箱), a yellow box filled with eggs. Olly’s eyes widened with curiosity as he peered inside. Mrs. Cooper explained that she had to spend time with the eggs to make sure they hatched safely, just like his parents had to take care of Lily. She said, “I spend quite a lot of time with them when I could be playing with Teddy. But it doesn’t mean I don’t love him. Once I’ve finished in here, I can give all my attention to Teddy.” This helped Olly understand that his parents’ attention to Lily didn’t mean they care less about him. When Olly’s dad came to pick him up, he promised to take Olly to swim the next day. Olly felt happy and valued again, knowing that his parents’ love for him was still there.

7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

8. What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions?
10. What’s Banerjee’s opinion about the AI program?
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. D

One day Olly asked his mom to teach him to swim because his class would be doing swimming at school after the holidays.
