Experts believe that the visit marked a significant step in strengthening China-France ties and fostering confidence in deeper cooperation on global issues, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to a multipolar world order and multilateralism. The visit demonstrates the two sides' commitment to developing their partnership in a balanced and responsible manner, one that respects each other's interests while promoting multi-dimensional cooperation, said Waref Kumayha, president of the Silk Road Institute for Studies and Research in Lebanon. Amid rising geopolitical tensions and challenges in the global economy, closer China-France ties can offer a model of partnership based on dialogue and cooperation rather than retreat or confrontation, providing a practical approach to managing major international issues in a responsible and balanced way, he said. The visit also reflects the two sides' commitment to a stable and constructive relationship at a time of significant global uncertainty, said Chris Murphy, general manager of Coface Hong Kong, a French trade credit insurer, adding that it reinforces the long-standing tradition of dialogue between China and France. Mohamadi Compaore, a senior Ivorian journalist and publication director of the newspaper La Diplomatique d'Abidjan, said that through high-level exchanges, both nations demonstrate how strategic communication can bridge differences and foster mutual trust. The partnership between the two major countries has become a stabilizing force in today's volatile world, said Compaore. "The message is clear: a strong and collaborative China-France relationship is not only beneficial for both nations but also serves as a vital source of certainty and positive momentum for the wider world." Closer China-France cooperation will inject much-needed certainty into a world full of uncertainties, and will add momentum to the shared aspiration of all nations for peace, development and a stable future, said Veronika Saraswati, director of the Global Development Research Center in Indonesia. It is highly meaningful for the leaders of China and France, two major countries with global influence, to meet in person, said Saraswati, adding that their engagement sends a positive signal for peace and stability and helps steer the international situation in a more predictable direction. It is easy to defend a large building, but usually these buildings are not designed with the comfort of a king in mind. When it comes to structures that are both beautiful and defensive, the European castle is a big success. Castles were originally built in England by the Normans in 1066. They built towers and walls to secure the land they had taken. These castles provided the Normans with a quiet and safe place. They also served as bases of operation for attacks. In this way castles served both defensive and offensive roles. Besides, castles served as offices for governors. Those that were socially beneath the governor would come to report affairs and express their respect. They would address problems, handle business, feast, and enjoy festivities in castles. So castles served as social centers as well. The first castles were made from earth and wood, and they were likely to suffer from attacks by fire. Then wooden castles were gradually replaced by stone, which greatly increased the strength of these towers and walls. However, attackers could throw flaming objects into castles through the windows or burn the wooden doors. This led to moving the windows and entrances off of the ground floor and up to the first floor to make them more difficult to access. During the Middle Ages, attacks increased in regularity, so castle defenses were updated. Arrow-slits were added. They were small holes in the castle, which allowed defenders to fire without being hurt. Towers were built from which defenders could provide fire on both sides. The towers were connected to the castle by wooden bridges, so that if one tower fell, the rest of the castle was still easy to defend. A lot of rings of castle walls were constructed, so that even if attackers went past one wall, they would be caught on a killing ground between inner and outer walls. All of these increased the defense of castles. The end of castles can be attributed to gunpowder. During the 15th century, artillery, a kind of large guns, became powerful enough to break through stone walls. This greatly made the role of castles less effective. Though castles no longer serve their original purposes, remaining castles receive millions of visitors each year who wish to experience the situations of ancient times. 1.What was the original function of castles according to the passage? A.They served as tourist attractions. B.They were built for use in emergencies. C.They marked religious ceremonies. D.They were important social centers. 2.The reason why wooden castles were replaced by stone castles was that ________. A.stone castles cost less money B.wooden castles were uncomfortable C.stone castles offered better defense D.wooden castles took a long time to build 3.Which of the following showed an improvement in castle defenses? A.Castles were totally separated by stones. B.Windows and entrances were moved to the higher floor. C.Rings of walls were built to defend the towers. D.Arrow-slits were made in large quantities. 4.What is the main idea of the passage? A.To describe the process of building castles in different materials B.To explain why palaces are less defensive than castles C.To discuss the impact of gunpowder on the construction of castles D.To introduce a history of castles and its rise and fall What do you do with old stuff? That top you bought for a party three years ago, for example. You wore it once and it’s been hanging in your wardrobe (衣柜) ever since. You could throw it away, but that seems wasteful — after all it’s still perfectly usable. So, what to do? 1 The first charity shops appeared in Britain in the 19th Century. The Salvation Army, a UK charity, was one of the first to run a second-hand clothing shop to provide the poor and needy with affordable clothes. 2 It also raised money for the war effort during World War II. These days, charity shops are a common sight with around 11,200 shops across the UK, according to the Charity Retail Association. During business hours any member of the public can donate their unwanted items to a charity shop. 3 These items are checked and if found still serviceable, priced up to be sold at a heavily discounted price. For many, this is a win-win situation. 4 To the consumer, it provides the opportunity to buy, often extremely cheaply, items and clothes. To the donator, it may help to ease consumer guilt. “You can make a pretty good case, because what you are doing is going towards a charitable cause and you are saving stuff from landfill,” Clare Press. fashion journalist and sustainable style advocate, tells the newspaper. 5 On more than one occasion a buyer has purchased something very cheaply, only to later discover its true value. So next time you need to rid yourself of something, spare a thought for the charity shop — after all, charity begins at home! A.Here are some tips that you can follow. B.In the UK, we might take it to a charity shop. C.You’re recommended to donate new items. D.To the charity, it means they can pursue their charitable aim. E.This was followed by charities such as the British Red Cross. F.There are sometimes hidden treasures for the buyers, too. G.Most charity shops will take anything. 1 (locate) in the northwest of Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, at the eastern edge of the grand Qilian Mountains, lies the Binggou River Scenic Area — a quiet natural treasure just waiting to be explored. 根据第三段中“The first castles were made from earth and wood, and they were likely to suffer from attacks by fire. Then wooden castles were gradually replaced by stone, which greatly increased the strength of these towers and walls. 根据第三段中“However, attackers could throw flaming objects into castles through the windows or burn the wooden doors. This led to moving the windows and entrances off of the ground floor and up to the first floor to make them more difficult to access. 通读全文可知,文章依次介绍了城堡的起源、原始功能、材料演变、防御设施升级以及衰落原因,核心是“To introduce a history of castles and its rise and fall (介绍城堡的历史及其兴衰)”。 What do you do with old stuff? 1.上文“That top you bought for a party three years ago, for example.
