At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer.
Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did.
“At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.
While her publisher describes Come What May as a roadmap for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.
24. What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1?
A. Severe and forbidding. B. Competent and cautious.
C. Friendly and energetic. D. Cheerful and approachable.
25. What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023?
A. The publication of a best seller. B. The growth of professional disaster circles.
C. Her involvement in2004 tsunami relief. D. Her sudden rise to fame through media.
26. Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3?
A. To reveal Easthope’s personal fears. B. To explain Easthope’s writing process.
C. To show Easthope’s writing motivation. D. To present public doubts about Easthope’s work.
27. What does Easthope agree on handling disasters?
A. Resilience matters most. B. Forgetting aids recovery.
C. Positive thinking takes the lead. D. Minor sufferings deserve attention.

When driving, Clara-Marina Martinez makes a note of any unusual behaviour she sees on the road. She then feeds these into machine learning algorithms (算法), a form of AI, which she is helping develop for Porsche Engineering.
Those algorithms are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself. Such a fully autonomous car known in the industry as Level 5, should be able to complete an entire journey without any intervention from the driver, and deal with all situations on the road. But this is proving hard to achieve, and many attempts to do so are being abandoned. Last year, for instance, Uber sold off its unit developing self-driving cars.
Autonomous vehicles are said to be not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time to learn how to drive safely, so do machines. And machines are not quick learners. The RAND Corporation calculates that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver, 100 self-driving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Carmakers such as Porsche therefore speed up the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach software about dangers rarely encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her colleagues employ “game engines” to do this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive. Objects in these virtual worlds are assigned their physical characteristics (ie, buildings are hard. people are soft) so that the sensors in vehicles respond in the appropriate way. Once the software has been trained, it is tested in real autonomous vehicles by re-creating those situations on a test track.
How quickly all this will translate into reality remains to be seen. Both regulators and customers will need to overcome the doubt that a software drive really can be safer than a human being.
From Porsche’s point of view, though, there is another question. Given that much of the reason for owning a sports car is for owners to show off their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a version where software takes those bragging rights (炫耀的权利) away?
28. What does Clara-Marina Martinez intend to do?
A. Market Porsche cars. B. Learn to be a responsible driver.
C. Enjoy riding in a self-driving car. D. Improve the AI technology.
29. What is the problem with self-driving cars?
A. They learn as slowly as human beings.
B. They have to be monitored by human drivers.
C. They need a long time to reach a certain safety level.
D. They can operate for a very short period of time.
30. What are Dr Martinez and her colleagues doing?
A. Enabling software to identify road dangers. B. Fixing sensors in autonomous vehicles.
C. Re-creating road situations on a test track. D. Separating the real world from the virtual world.
31. What worries Porsche according to the last paragraph?
A. The reliability of car software. B. The future of its sports car market.
C. The quality of self-driving cars. D. The driving skills of human beings.

Plastic has become an essential part of modern life, with around 1 million plastic water bottles sold every minute and 5 trillion plastic bags used worldwide every year, according to the UN’s Environment Program. Half of all plastic production is designed for single-use purposes, and the annual output of over 400 million tons is projected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. This growing mountain of waste has intensified public and regulatory demands for improved recycling.
Recycling plastic, however, is complex. Many items are dirty or made from multiple layers, making traditional methods ineffective. Consequently, over 90% of plastic waste is buried, or deserted in nature. In response, forward-thinking companies are investing in advanced recycling technologies to turn waste into raw materials for new plastic. Yet, this approach has caused debates.
One common method, pyrolysis, involves heating plastic waste to produce oil and synthetic gas, which powers recycling plants. However, the process releases harmful substances, raising concerns about its environmental impact. Critics argue that, rather than achieving a reduction in carbon emissions (排放), this method might result in similar or even higher levels of emissions compared to the production of new plastic. Some even accuse the industry of using advanced recycling as a way to justify continued plastic production. America’s Environmental Protection Agency has rejected this approach, and European environmental groups share similar concerns.
Despite these challenges, advanced recycling has potential. For instance, Mura Technology in the UK claims its hydrothermal process produces more output with lower carbon emissions, while Australia’s Samsara Eco is developing enzyme-based methods that remove the need for new oil. These advancements could make recycling more efficient and environmentally friendly, helping to keep plastic in use rather than in landfills (填埋场).
While the debate around advanced recycling continues, progress is underway. Britain recently approved a version of the mass-balance approach, and many EU member states are leaning towards acceptance. With further innovation and investment, advanced recycling could play a vital role in addressing the global plastic waste crisis.
32. What do the figures in paragraph 1 indicate?
A. The difficulty of recycling. B. The severity of plastic waste.
C. The prospect of plastic goods. D. The popularity of plastic items.
33 Why does advanced recycling meet with criticism?
A. It legalizes plastic production. B. It produces more plastic waste.
C. It does harm to recycling plants. D. It risks higher carbon emissions.
34. What can be inferred about the innovations in advanced recycling?
A. They offer an alternative to new oil.
B. They have won popularity in the west.
C. They hold promise for green recycling.
D. They guarantee a solution to plastic waste.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards advanced recycling?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.
“I don’t need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.
That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.
“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.
“Yes.” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”
As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.

根据第一段“At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. (初看之下,伊斯特霍普似乎一点都不像 “卡珊德拉式的人物”。她笑容爽朗,举止亲切又充满母性;若非要说出她的职业,你或许会猜是护士或教师)”可知,伊斯特霍普笑容爽朗,举止亲切又充满母性,一点都不像“卡珊德拉式的人物”。由此推知,“卡珊德拉式的人物”是严肃且不易亲近的。故选A。
根据第二段中“For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did.(20年来,公众对这项在幕后进行的至关重要的工作一无所知,尽管她在我们所谓的专业灾难界受到极大的钦佩:她是一种冷静的声音和智慧的源泉。但在2023年,她出版了一本关于她职业生涯的畅销书《When the Dust Settles》,情况发生了变化。人们对她的所作所为非常感兴趣)”可知,2003年出版的畅销书后让公众对伊斯特霍普的工作有了更多认识。故选A。
根据第三段中“I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual.(“我会告诉他们,我并非在恐惧中生活,也会给他们一些基础建议。但这远远不够。”最终,她觉得自己别无选择,只能再写一本书 —— 在这本书里,她会努力将自己所学的一切浓缩提炼,为每一个普通人带来帮助)”推知,作者在第三段引用那些问题的目的是为了展示伊斯特霍普写作的动力。故选C。
27. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect.(伊斯特霍普还提醒人们,一些看似微小的事 —— 比如生病时脱发、或是有人离世后因情绪波动暴饮暴食 —— 其实都值得关注。她鼓励人们铭记灾害发生时的种种经历,而非选择遗忘,因为这类事件会留下深远持久的影响)”可知,在应对灾难方面伊斯特霍普提醒人们关注细微的痛苦。故选D。
C
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述开发自动驾驶汽车的问题以及对跑车市场的影响。
28.推理判断题。根据第一段“When driving, Clara-Marina Martinez makes a note of any unusual behaviour she sees on the road. She then feeds these into machine learning algorithms (算法), a form of AI, which she is helping develop for Porsche Engineering. (开车时,Clara-Marina Martinez会记下她在路上看到的任何异常行为。然后,她将这些输入到机器学习算法中,这是一种人工智能,她正在帮助保时捷工程集团开发这种算法。)”及第二段“Those algorithms are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself. (这些算法旨在产生一个足够可靠的系统,让汽车自动驾驶。)”可知,Clara-Marina Martinez将开车时的异常输入到人工智能算法中,弥补人工智能算法的不足,使其更可靠。故推知Clara-Marina Martinez打算改进人工智能技术。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“Autonomous vehicles are said to be not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time to learn how to drive safely, so do machines. And machines are not quick learners. The RAND Corporation calculates that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver, 100 self-driving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
根据第四段“Carmakers such as Porsche therefore speed up the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach software about dangers rarely encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her colleagues employ “game engines” to do this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive. (因此,保时捷等汽车制造商使用模拟器加快了开发过程。这些教会软件有关现实中很少遇到的危险。Martinez博士和她的同事使用“游戏引擎”来做到这一点。这些用于创建软件可以驱动的虚拟世界。)”可知,Martinez博士和她的同事用“游戏引擎”教会软件有关现实中很少遇到的危险,目的是使软件能够识别道路危险,故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“From Porsche’s point of view, though, there is another question. Given that much of the reason for owning a sports car is for owners to show off their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a version where software takes those bragging rights (炫耀的权利) away?

根据第一段“Plastic has become an essential part of modern life, with around 1 million plastic water bottles sold every minute and 5 trillion plastic bags used worldwide every year, according to the UN’s Environment Program. Half of all plastic production is designed for single-use purposes, and the annual output of over 400 million tons is projected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. This growing mountain of waste has intensified public and regulatory demands for improved recycling.(据联合国环境规划署称,塑料已成为现代生活中不可或缺的一部分,全球每分钟售出约100万个塑料水瓶,每年使用5万亿个塑料袋。一半的塑料生产是为了一次性使用,年产量超过4亿吨,预计到2050年将达到11亿吨。这一不断增长的垃圾山加剧了公众和监管机构对改进回收利用的要求。)”可知,第一段中的数字表明了塑料垃圾的严重性。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“One common method, pyrolysis, involves heating plastic waste to produce oil and synthetic gas, which powers recycling plants. America’s Environmental Protection Agency has rejected this approach, and European environmental groups share similar concerns.(热解是一种常见的回收方法,通过加热塑料垃圾生产石油和合成气,为回收工厂提供能源。但该过程会释放有害物质,引发对其环境影响的担忧。批评者认为,这种方法非但无法减少碳排放,反而可能产生与生产新塑料相当甚至更高的排放水平。一些人甚至指责塑料行业利用先进回收技术作为继续生产塑料的借口。美国环境保护局已否决了这种方法,欧洲环保组织也表达了类似担忧。)”可知,先进回收技术受到批评是因为它有可能导致更高的碳排放。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“Despite these challenges, advanced recycling has potential. For instance, Mura Technology in the UK claims its hydrothermal process produces more output with lower carbon emissions, while Australia’s Samsara Eco is developing enzyme-based methods that remove the need for new oil. These advancements could make recycling more efficient and environmentally friendly, helping to keep plastic in use rather than in landfills (填埋场).(尽管存在这些挑战,先进回收仍有潜力。例如,英国的Mura Technology公司声称其水热工艺能以更低的碳排放产生更多的产出,而澳大利亚的Samsara Eco公司正在开发基于酶的方法,无需使用新油。这些进步可以使回收更加高效和环保,有助于保持塑料的使用,而不是填埋。)”可知,先进回收技术的创新为绿色回收带来了希望。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“While the debate around advanced recycling continues, progress is underway. Britain recently approved a version of the mass-balance approach, and many EU member states are leaning towards acceptance. With further innovation and investment, advanced recycling could play a vital role in addressing the global plastic waste crisis.(尽管围绕先进回收的争论仍在继续,但进展正在进行中。英国最近批准了一种质量平衡方法的版本,许多欧盟成员国也倾向于接受。随着进一步的创新和投资,先进回收可以在解决全球塑料垃圾危机方面发挥至关重要的作用。)”等内容可知,作者对先进回收持客观态度,既提到了其面临的挑战和争议,也指出了其潜力和进展。故选B。

We did all kinds of work, from removing goat droppings to building total shelters. IT might sound like hard work, and IT was, but IT was also incredibly rewarding. Every day, I felt a deep sense of joy, knowing that we were making a difference in these animals lives. Volunteering there not only brought my dad and me closer, but also filled my heart with happiness. I truly believe that helping these lovely creatures is one of the most meaningful things we can do. W: Tom, I heard you are planning a trip to China. Have you learned about Fujian Tulou?
M: No, I haven’t. What are they exactly?
W: They are unique earthen buildings. ⑮They were built between the 12th and 20th centuries. They can be round or square.
M: That sounds really interesting. What makes them so unique?
W: Well, take the Chengqi Building for example. It has four floors and 400 rooms. And it was built using materials like soil, sand, and bamboo, which makes it quite strong.
M: Why does it have so many rooms?
W: ⑯They were designed to house many families. The inward-looking design was not only for defense but also for community living.
M: That’s amazing! Are there any other famous buildings?
W: Yes, the Heguilou stands five stories high. It really shows the incredible engineering skills of that time.
M: Are these buildings in the city center?
W: No, they’re in scenic areas surrounded by rice fields and mountains. It’s really beautiful.
M: Sounds like a great place to visit. Thanks for telling me about this. I’ll add it to my travel list.

M: Good afternoon, everyone! My name is Andrew Swindle. Now I’d like to share my amazing experience volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with you all. ⑱I started this journey because of my dad. He’s 81, and I’ve always admired his love for animals. I thought it would be a great way to bond with him, so we decided to volunteer together. At the sanctuary, we did all kinds of work, from removing goat droppings to building tortoise shelters. It might sound like hard work, and it was, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Every day, ⑲I felt a deep sense of joy knowing that we were making a difference in these animals’ lives. Volunteering there not only brought my dad and me closer but also filled my heart with happiness. I truly believe that helping these lovely creatures is one of the most meaningful things we can do. ⑳So, if you have a passion for animals, come and join us as volunteers. You’ll not only change their lives but also your own!
