High School Programmes in Australia
Beautiful weather, friendly people and a widely varied landscape are just a few of the reasons you should choose to spend time in Australia as a high school student. Here are some programmes you can choose from.
High School Exchange
Individuals studying for a semester or full year in Australia will usually live with a host family. This is a great opportunity for students to see what daily family life is like in Australia. Students learning English will see their language skills improve by communicating with their new friends and host family, while those familiar with the language already can use this opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Australia.
Youth Travel Tours
Travel tours for teens are a wonderful way for high school students to spend a short, concentrated amount of time abroad. Tours are usually for different themes such as cooking, adventure travel, or volunteerism. Students will have a fun, unique experience with educational components like environmental or cultural studies — and all without missing your normal coursework back home.
Summer Study Programme
For students who only have a few months of the summer break available, an advanced summer programme is perfect. Just keep in mind, the summer of the northern hemisphere (半球) is actually the winter of Australia. Oftentimes these summer programmes can be partnered with universities that will allow students to receive college credits.
1. What can High School Exchange offer?
A. A better understanding of Australian culture.
B. A good knowledge of what we learn at school.
C. A wonderful way to communicate with famous teachers.
D. A precious chance to make friends from different countries.
2. Who is most likely to choose Youth Travel Tours?
A. Those who have ever been volunteers. B. Those who are interested in cooking.
C. Those who like doing adventure sports. D. Those who want to take a part-time job.
3. What should students pay attention to when applying for the Summer Study Programme?
A. The programme requires a full academic year.
B. Students must volunteer as part of the programme.
C. The programme is only available to students ready for university.
D. Australia’s winter occurs during the northern hemisphere’s summer.

I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age — 18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an embarrassed expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of incomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awake from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability — for the most part — to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon?
4. What did the author probably meet with?
A. Hearing loss. B. Culture shock. C. A language barrier. D. A teaching problem.
5. What makes the author fall behind in language?
A. Learning needs. B. Teaching tasks. C. Age difference. D. Language abuse.
6. What does the author think of language change?
A. It is completely avoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too dramatic.
7. What does the underlined word “wanes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Reduces. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Focuses.
C
You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more concerned about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro and nano plastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied, molecules move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to make its way into your food.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added. The most important thing you should do is avoid heating your plastic, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
8. Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph?
A. To lead into the topic. B. To analyse the reason.
C. To prove the experts’ opinion. D. To introduce the background information.
9. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Plastic bottles of good quality are encouraged for use.
B. It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
C. High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D. Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
10. According to the passage, which of the following harms human health most?
A. Heating fast food in a glass bowl. B. Filling the grocery bag with meat.
C. Packing cold drink with single-use plastics. D. Eating hot soup contained in a single-use plastic bag.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Stop Using Single-use Plastics B. Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful
C. How to Correctly Use Single-use Plastics D. The Astonishing Fact of Single-use Plastics
D
People often describe those who are more creative as being “right-brained”, and those who are more logical as “left-brained”. This became a very popular idea about how the brain works. But it isn’t really true.
The theory about left and right brains emerged in the 1950s. Roger Sperry, a neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, got curious about how the two sides of the brain interacted. Through many “split-brain” experiments, he found that the ability to use language is based on the left half. Sperry’s research changed how we thought our brain worked. But the idea of right-versus-left brain skills also caught people’s imaginations. An article based on Sperry’s work claimed that skills such as musical ability were controlled entirely by the right brain. In this way, important research gave way to assumption. In fact, this early research had one huge limitation: Scientists back then could not look inside a living brain.
Now, researchers have several tools that can image the working brain. One is magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. It can track blood flow in the brain. Active brain cells need lots of oxygen, which is carried by blood. So high levels of blood flow are used to locate regions where the brain is active. In 2013, researchers used MRI to scan the brains of more than 1,000 kids and young adults. They measured whether some brain functions seemed isolated to the left or right sides. And a few functions were tied more strongly to one side, these scans showed. But most brain networks bounced between both halves.
“That disproved the idea that only the right half is at work when you perform music or create art. Activity is very, very distributed because both sides of the brain have a lot to offer,” says Diana Sarko, a researcher at Southern Illinois University.
12. What can we infer about Sperry’s “split-brain” research?
A. It barely influenced our views on how the brain worked.
B. It found the two halves of the brain are closely connected.
C. It clarified the concept of the left and right half of the brain.
D. It was groundbreaking but led to an oversimplified popular belief.
13. What is key to the advances in the modern brain research?
A. Technological progress. B. People’s imaginations.
C. Scientific research methods. D. A broader range of subjects.
14. What is Diana Sarko’s attitude towards Sperry’s “split-brain” research?
A. Neutral. B. Negative. C. Tolerant. D. Supportive.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. We Human Beings are Born with a “Split-brain”
B. “Right-brained” or “Left-brained”? Think Again!
C. Right-versus-left Brain Skills Shape Your Identity
D. Do You Have a Creative Brain or a Logical Brain?

Finally, I had done it. I had really done it. I played the drama successfully in the school hall. But a few months earlier, I would never have imagined acting in a play in front of hundreds of people. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears and discovered I could do more than I ever thought. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
Without my teacher, Mrs. Green, I might never have found that opportunity. In the first grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In fact I was never shy in my stories.
My teacher, Mrs. Green, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was the first person to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written. “I’ll begin to invite everyone tomorrow,” she said. “I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try?” Many excited hands shot up, and mine, of course, was not one of them. Mrs. Green smiled. “We’ll talk more about it tomorrow,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

【答案】A Firefighting Drill
Yesterday, a firefighting drill was conducted in our school with all teachers and students involved to arouse our awareness of fire prevention techniques.
The drill started with an alarm, hearing which students quickly evacuated the classrooms orderly under the guidance of the teachers to the appointed place. The fire escape routes were clearly marked, and fire extinguishers were readily available throughout the school. So it was five minutes later that all the building were emptied and students and teachers gathered on the playground. Our principal announced the drill was performed better than scheduled.
Both teachers and students appreciated the opportunity to learn about fire safety. Many expressed their gratitude for the school’s initiative in organizing such a drill, as it increased their confidence and awareness in dealing with potential fire hazards.

When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Green invited me to her office. Mrs. Green looked into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. “I’d like to invite you to give it a try. But if you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It is your choice.” The news that Mrs. Green wanted me in this role really shocked me. I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public. But was it always true for me?
Hearing Mrs. Green’s words, I realized that it was time to make a change. I decided to do something different. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I said, “Mrs. Green, I want to play the role. And I will try my best to perform it well. ” Looking at me with a big smile on face, Mrs. Green said, “I’m convinced that you can make it. Don’t hesitate to turn to me if you encounter any difficulties.” I nodded my head and left her office happily.
