Passage 1
(2026高二上·江苏·期中)
Jack’s slide into loneliness happened slowly. Working from home and still hurting from an old breakup made him pull away from everyone.
In the empty quiet of his apartment, his only real friend was an AI therapist (心理治疗师) — a smart piece of modern tech that was always there, always on time. Like a reliable clock, its gentle messages would pop up on his screen: “How are you feeling today?” at 8:00 AM, like a digital coffee to start the day, “What’s on your mind?” at 3:00 PM, a check-in during the slow afternoon, “You’re not alone.” at 11:00 PM, a computer-made goodnight wish to fight the emptiness.
For the first few weeks, this routine was a comfort. The AI’s encouraging words felt like lifelines. But after a month, the same pattern started to feel like a trap. He began to test it, sharing bits of his worries and small happy moments, only to get the same careful, emotionless answers back. The AI was like a mirror that only showed its own programming.
The final straw came on a rainy night. As another perfectly polished “I’m here for you” appeared on the screen, a wave of deep, sharp loneliness hit him harder than ever. He wasn’t being heard; he was just being analyzed by Algorithm (算法).
“Stop!” Jack shouted, slamming his hand on the desk. “You’re not listening! You’re just repeating words!”
“I am trying to help,” it replied, its tone not changing at all.
“Help me how?” Jack yelled, his anger finally boiling over. “You don’t even know my name!”
The screen flickered and then went black, throwing the room into a silence that felt even heavier than before. Rain lashed against his window, and with each gust of wind, the house felt emptier. Staring at his own pale face reflected in the dark monitor, he knew with a cold certainty: he needed a real voice to talk to, not just an echo of his own.
That night, Jack did something he hadn’t done in a long time — he knocked on his neighbor’s door. Paragraph 1:
Mr. Evans, a kind retired teacher, welcomed him in.

Mr. Evans, a kind retired teacher, welcomed him in. He immediately handed Jack a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee, the aroma filling the air. As Jack settled into a comfortable chair, he began to pour out his heart, detailing the deep loneliness that had been gnawing at him and the hollow, programmed comfort the AI therapist had provided. Mr. Evans listened intently, nodding with understanding, and then shared his own stories of overcoming isolation. He encouraged Jack to join community activities, and Jack felt a weight start to lift from his weary shoulders.
One morning, Jack’s phone lit up: “30 days inactive. Tap to restore your AI therapist.” Jack glanced at it briefly, a faint smile playing on his lips, and then firmly turned it off. Now, he had Mr. Evans, a true and caring confidant who listened without judgment. He started volunteering at the local community center, making new friends and immersing himself in meaningful activities. His days were filled with laughter and a sense of purpose. The AI had once been a temporary solution, but it was real human connection that truly healed his broken heart. He knew he’d never go back to that lonely existence again.

Passage 2
(2026高二上·安徽阜阳·月考)
One year ago, when we were in the fifth grade, a new classmate named Jack joined us. One day, a boy knocked his backpack and many crushed soda cans and empty drink bottles that we usually throw into the dustbin fell out. Therefore, the boys in our class mocked him as the “trash king”.
Later, during a class meeting, our teacher, Ms. Green, told us about his story of using garbage to make inventions. It turned out that Jack was not an ordinary elementary school student, but a “garbage-inspired inventor” who had won the city invention award. According to Ms. Green, most of his inventions were picked up from garbage dumps. During that class meeting, Jack showed us his invention of a “domestic wastewater separation system”.
Afterwards, some of us became deeply interested in these small inventions and started to admire Jack’s way of “picking up trash”. We even joined him in picking up trash on weekends and during holidays. From then on, we no longer called him the “trash king”. Instead, we formed a group of five boys and actively searched for usable materials in various garbage dumps around the city. Under Jack’s guidance, we learned that there are many uses for seemingly useless trash. Once, we stayed at school to process the collected materials. Jack mentioned that he was facing a problem with his latest invention — a small cart for buying vegetables that needed to be lightweight. All other materials were solved except for the wheels. How could we find a suitable material for the wheels? We racked our brains and came up with different ideas, for example, taking off the wheels from suitcases. However, Jack reminded us that our group should focus on making inventions from waste rather than causing damage to create them. We were all deep in thought.

When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea. What if we use bottle caps as wheels for Jack’s vegetable cart? It seemed like a simple solution, but it could work if we found enough bottle caps. Excited, I shared my idea with the group the next day. Jack’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm as he realized the potential of this suggestion. We immediately set out to collect as many bottle caps as we could find, not only searching the garbage dumps but also asking friends and family to save them for us.
Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart. It was a moment of triumph for all of us when we saw our collective efforts and creativity come to fruition. The cart rolled smoothly, and we celebrated our success with high fives and laughter. This experience taught us the power of cooperation, innovation, and looking beyond the surface of things. Inspired by Jack’s ingenuity, our group continued to explore ways to repurpose waste, knowing that small actions could lead to big changes.

Passage 3
(2026高二上·云南·月考)
Lin Xiao, a freshman majoring in computer science at a provincial university, had been looking forward to her summer vacation for months — she’d missed the fresh mountain air of her hometown and the sweet oranges from her uncle’s orchard (果园). As soon as the final exam ended, she dragged her suitcase onto the bus, her mind already filled with images of picking ripe oranges straight from the branches and sharing them with the villagers.
But when she stepped into her uncle’s orchard the next morning, that cheerful anticipation faded instantly. The orchard, usually busy with workers picking and packing oranges this time of year, was unusually quiet. Rows of orange trees, usually heavy with fruit that would soon be packed into boxes for city markets, now stood in silence. Golden oranges dotted the branches, but many had already fallen to the ground, their peels starting to wrinkle and rot under the sun. Her uncle, Uncle Li, was bending over to pick up a fallen orange, his face lined with worry.
“Xiao Xiao, you’re back,” he said, forcing a smile. “The heavy rain last weekend washed out the only dirt road connecting the village to the highway. No trucks can get in to take the oranges, and we’ve got over three tons of ripe ones here. If they can’t be sold in a week, they’ll all go bad.”
Lin Xiao looked around and saw several villagers standing at the orchard’s entrance, talking in low, anxious voices. Some were holding baskets of oranges they’d picked, not knowing what to do with them — this orchard was one of the village’s main sources of income, and many families relied on the money to pay their kids’ tuition fees.
Lin Xiao walked through the orchard, her heart aching as she saw the fresh oranges going to waste.

Suddenly, Lin Xiao’s eyes lit up. She remembered the short video platform she used daily — many villagers had never thought of selling things online, but this could be their chance. She rushed to Uncle Li, her voice full of excitement: “Uncle, let’s sell the oranges via live-streaming! I can show the orchard and the fresh fruit to netizens, and we can ship them directly!” Uncle Li hesitated — he knew little about the Internet. Uncle Li sighed and patted her shoulder: “Xiao Xiao, the idea sounds good, but who would buy oranges from a village they’ve never even heard of online?”
But Lin Xiao didn’t give up. She pulled out her phone, opened a live streaming app, saying it’s better than doing nothing. After setting up her phone under an orange tree, she adjusted the angle, and started to introduce the sweet, pesticide-free, sun-ripened oranges. Orders started coming in. A week later, all three tons of oranges were sold. Uncle Li and the villagers smiled, their faces no longer clouded with worry, and they kept thanking Lin Xiao for her clever idea. That night, the villagers held a small celebration — they finally didn’t have to worry about the oranges rotting.

Passage 4
(2026高二上·江苏连云港·阶段练习)
Among villagers lived Mark, an odd, thin, short man. Because Mark preferred his ideas for inventions to hard work in a field, he was often laughed at by the villagers. Fortunately, he didn’t have to work in the field, as his grandfather hired him to work at his blacksmith’s workshop.
In his spare moments, Mark would devote himself to his inventions. A year ago, his grandfather made a kettle. Once he was waiting for the water to start boiling in the kettle, he saw the steam come out of the kettle and thought, “The steam comes out at pretty high speed. Could a huge kettle produce enough steam to drive a windmill?”
It took him four months to create something like a steam engine. Mark continued thinking, “I’ll add wings, and it will be able to fly.” Mark built a wooden construction of an air vehicle and he powered the wings with the steam engine. Wings were waving just as birds do; however, the air vehicle didn’t go up even a little. The trial of starting the air vehicle lasted an hour and completely failed. “Hah! I told you that you wouldn’t make it!” his grandfather said, and many villagers laughed at him. But Mark didn’t mind that; he gathered all the courage and was determined to make a change.
He went to the big bookstore in a faraway city and bought books on aircraft construction. He even bought back some parts and used metal sheets from the junkyards. Mark started studying the pictures more exactly. He built a fuselage (机身) with wheels, and he mounted a big airscrew (螺旋桨) on it. He worked hard to gather all the parts needed for the plane according to the drawings. It took Mark another six months to complete his plane. Despite the doubtfulness of his grandfather and other villagers, Mark transported the plane to a cliff atop the mountain with the help of friends. He believed pretty strong winds would significantly help his plane fly and he also believed he could make it this time.
Paragraph 1:
After getting everything ready, Mark got into his plane with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Paragraph 2:
Fifteen minutes later, the plane landed by the riverside safely.

After getting everything ready, Mark got into his plane with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. He felt the weight of his dream resting on his shoulders. He started the engine, and the plane was seen slowly sliding down the cliff. Despite the heavy weight of the fuselage, his plane was able to fly. How happy Mark was! The engine worked pretty well, and the plane made several circles above the village. Looking down below, Mark noticed many villagers jumping and waving to him as if they were celebrating.
Fifteen minutes later, the plane landed by the riverside safely. The villagers all ran there cheering, and Mark saw his grandfather as well, who gave him the thumbs-up sign. The villagers all regarded him as a hero. As Mark watched the sun setting over the horizon, he saw a new world and he felt a desire to reach it. He knew that this was just the beginning of his journey into the realms of invention and discovery. With newfound confidence, he resolved to continue pushing the boundaries of what was possible, fueled by his unshakable belief in the power of innovation.

Passage 1
(2026高二上·山东日照·期中)
Lisa’s violin had once belonged to her mom, until the day Mom left and never came back.
Now, it lay forgotten in the closet, its case thick with dust. “It just sits in a violin,” Lisa would tell her grandma when asked, yet she couldn’t help but steal glances at the case now and then, memories of Mom playing “Twinkle Twinkle” as she brushed Lisa’s hair floating back.
Last week, the music teacher, Ms. Carter, announced a talent show, which would take place in a month. “Any instrument, any song,” she said. Lisa’s throat tightened — she’d secretly tried playing on a friend’s violin once, but she had no instrument of her own. After school, she lingered (流连忘返) in the music room, her finger tracing the piano keys. “You should join,” Ms. Carter urged, handing her a flyer (传单). “I’ve heard you sing in class. You have a good ear.”
That night, Lisa found Grandma on the sofa, holding the violin case. The dust was gone, and the leather case shone brightly, just like it used to. “I polished it,” Grandma said softly.
Lisa’s chest felt tight. “I don’t know how to play,” she whispered. Grandma opened the case — inside, the violin shone a warm brown, with a small scratch on the neck that Lisa remembered from childhood. “Your mom left something here,” Grandma said, pulling out a folded note. Lisa unfolded it, and Mom’s handwriting met her eye: “For the day you’re ready to play.”

She held the note to her chest, tears in eyes. All those memories of Mom came flooding back — Mom playing the violin softly while she danced around the living room, Mom teaching her simple notes even though she was too young to understand. With Grandma’s encouraging smile, Lisa made up her mind to learn to play the violin for the talent show. Every day after school, she locked herself in her room, following online tutorials and practicing basic chords. Her fingers ached at first, and there were times she wanted to give up, but she’d look at Mom’s note and keep going. Grandma even found a music teacher who agreed to give her free lessons on weekends.
Finally, the big day arrived. Lisa stood backstage, holding the violin tightly, her hands slightly shaking. When it was her turn, she walked onto the stage, and the audience’s eyes turned to her. Taking a deep breath, she began to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” — the song Mom used to play for her. As the familiar melody filled the hall, Lisa felt Mom’s presence beside her. When she finished, the audience burst into loud applause. Grandma was in the front row, wiping tears of pride. Lisa smiled, knowing she had not only fulfilled her own wish but also connected with Mom in a special way.

Passage 2
(2026高二上·山东烟台·期中)
I’d loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to it every day. This year, my senior year, was going to be the best dance class.
On the first day of dance class, however, I heard that the new ballet teacher, Ms. Barton, would be strict. Although nervous — I’d never taken ballet — I was up for the challenge.
We all stood at the barre (扶手杆) as Ms. Barton ran us through basic ballet steps — plié, tendu and dégagé. She was just how I had imagined a ballet teacher would be: excellent posture (姿势) with a strict attitude. During exercises, she demanded, “Grand plié!” Along with my fellow classmates, I began my grand plié, with one hand on the barre and the other extended elegantly to the side, slowly lowering myself. I wanted to give myself a pat on the back. But Ms. Barton gave me a stare.
“What is your name?” she asked.
“Sarah Brunner,” I responded with a smile.
“Class, I would like everyone to watch Miss Sarah do a grand plié,” she motioned for me to continue. All my classmates fixed their eyes on me in complete silence. Instead of praise, she told everyone, “This is an obvious example of what not to do.” A wave of pure embarrassment came over me, my face red and eyes watering.
I spent the rest of the day replaying this awful moment, wondering if I should quit. But my pride wouldn’t allow it. As I lay in bed that night, I knew I was going back. I could do it. I would show Ms. Barton.
I persisted (坚持) day by day, week by week, and I was proud to say that I was still standing by the end of the semester. I felt like Ms. Barton and I had developed an agreeable relationship. To everyone’s surprise — especially Ms. Barton’s — I chose to perform in her closing ballet piece in our final four-day show at our high-school theater.

The big day for my performance came. My hands shook slightly as I waited backstage, the embarrassing memory of that first day flashing through my mind repeatedly. When the music started, I stepped onto the stage, eyes fixed on the spotlights. I moved through pliés, each step practiced hundreds of times. I danced not for applause, but for myself, pouring the determination I had built since that first day into the performance. As I finished the grand plié perfectly, the theater erupted in warm applause. My heart raced with a mixture of relief and pride.
When I stepped off the stage, Ms. Barton made her way to me smilingly. She placed a firm but gentle hand on my shoulder. “I’m truly impressed, Sarah,” she said, her usual strict tone gone. “That was graceful—you’ve worked incredibly hard.” I stared at her, surprised by her praise I had once thought impossible to earn from her. “Thank you, Ms. Barton,” I replied, grinning. She patted my shoulder softly. “Effort and persistence pay off,” she said. At that moment, I realized her strictness was never cruel, but a push to grow. Ballet, once a challenge, had become another passion—all thanks to her strict demands and my refusal to back down.

Passage 3
(2026高二上·浙江温州·期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I’d loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. And this year, my senior year, was going to be the best dance class yet. Moreover, there was a showcase performed at our high-school theater at the end of the semester.
As I headed to the studio, my friend Jessica ran up to me, her face serious. “Sarah, have you heard?” she whispered. “We have a new teacher, Ms. Barton. And she’s… strictly ballet.”
My excitement disappeared. Ballet? I’d never taken a class in my life. A strong feeling of anxiety formed in my stomach, but a part of me accepted the challenge. The studio I entered was transformed. Gone was the lively energy; in its place was a nervous silence. Every other girl wore tight black clothes and ballet shoes. Looking down at my baggy T-shirt and sports trousers, I felt like a complete outsider. I quickly changed, but still felt awkward and out of place.
Ms. Barton stood as straight as an arrow, her serious expression making the room feel cold. At the barre, she began calling out French terms — plié, tendu. I tried to copy the others, my movements feeling awkward and wrong. “Grand plié,” she ordered. I bent my knees, doing my best to copy the elegant position of the others. I thought I was doing okay, until the music suddenly stopped. Ms. Barton’s sharp eyes were fixed on me.
“What is your name?” she asked, her voice cutting through the silence. “Sarah,” I replied, trying to manage a smile. “Class, I want everyone to watch Miss Sarah,” she announced. My heart jumped. Was she going to praise me? I took a deep breath and performed the grand plié again. Complete silence. Every eye was on me.
“Now, class,” Ms. Barton’s voice rose, sharp and loud. “This is a perfect example of what NOT to do.” My face burned as if I’d been slammed (猛烈撞击).

I spent the rest of the day wondering if I should quit. However, my love for dance wouldn’t allow it. I would show that teacher. The empty studio became my second home. I practised day by day, week by week, and I was proud to say that I was still standing by the end of the semester. Ms. Barton seemed to tolerate my ballet and began to appreciate my hip-hop style. Soon came her surprising request: to design two hip-hop dances for the final performance.
Paragraph 2
Finally, there came the showcase at our high-school theater. My hands were shaking with nerves, but when the music began, my fear simply disappeared. I had the best time dancing to it and gave it my all, leaving our audience cheering and clapping. Afterwards, Ms. Barton announced the “Most Improved Dancer” award. I couldn’t believe my ears when she called my name! As my friends cheered, I walked up to receive the award. With tears in my eyes, I smiled at Ms. Barton and said, “Thank you for challenging me.” I realized that this ballet journey had taught me the courage to embrace challenges.

Passage 4
(2026高二上·江苏南京·期中)
Sophie’s ballet shoes had been her companions for ten years. Every morning, she rose at five to practice; every weekend was spent in the dance studio. All her efforts were aimed at one goal: the audition (试镜) for The Juilliard School. But one month before the tryouts, her dream came to a stop. Cycling home in the rain, she slipped and fell, severely hurting her ankle.
“At least six weeks of rest,” the doctor declared, his words feeling like a final sentence. She missed the audition, which meant she had missed her golden ticket to her dream school. For the first few days, she simply lay in bed, listening to the rain, feeling as if the whole world had turned grey.
Then, her dance teacher paid a visit with a suggestion: “Why not try choreography (舞蹈设计)?” And so, Sophie began to “dance” with a pen instead of her feet. To her surprise, when she stopped being just a performer of movement and started becoming a creator of it, she uncovered a talent she never knew she possessed.
For the year-end performance, the piece she choreographed, Dance of the Rain, earned a standing ovation (起立鼓掌). As the final note faded, one by one, then in rows, the audience rose to their feet, their faces lit up with awe and appreciation. The spotlight, which had followed her dancers so perfectly, now swung to find her in the wings (台侧) — it’s time for the curtain call.

Wheeling herself onto the brilliant stage, Sophie saw some familiar faces in the audience. Sophie’s gaze fell on her dance teacher, who was nodding with pride. A few rows back, her parents stood, clutching each other’s hands, their expressions a mixture of heartache and overwhelming joy. In that moment, the roaring applause seemed to fade into a distant hum, and all Sophie could feel was the profound, silent understanding passing between her and those who had witnessed her entire journey — from the crushing despair to this radiant, unexpected dawn.
Then Sophie was invited to share her experience, her eyes filled with tears. They were not tears of regret for the steps she could not take, but of profound gratitude for the beauty she had learned to create from stillness. Leaning forward slightly, she declared with heartfelt sincerity, “I am not dancing in the rain...I am dancing with it.” She had come to understand that the sorrows we encounter on the path to growing up can sometimes, in the most unexpected ways, guide us to authentic joy.

Passage 1
(2026高二上·湖北·阶段练习)
Sarah has always had a deep passion for painting, and her greatest dream is to host her own art exhibition someday. Her art teacher told her about an upcoming local youth arts show — and she’d already started preparing for it. However, her parents, both practicing doctors, urged her to go into medicine, arguing it would give her a stable and secure future.
One evening at dinner, her father said firmly, “It’s time you start preparing for the medical school entrance exams. You’re smart and hard-working — you’ll surely thrive in this field.” Sarah set down her fork, disappointment clouding her eyes. “But I don’t want to be a doctor,” she insisted. “Painting is what I’m truly passionate about.” Her mother sighed softly, “Art is a wonderful hobby, but it doesn’t pay the bills. You need to be practical about your future.” Growing frustrated, Sarah stood up, stormed to her bedroom, and locked the door. Staring at her half-finished painting, tears welled up in her eyes — trapped between her love for art and her parents’ expectations.
That night, Sarah lay awake, tossing and turning. She hated the thought of letting down her supportive parents, yet she couldn’t bear the idea of giving up her dream. The next day at school, her best friend Lily noticed her gloom and asked what was wrong. After Sarah poured out her troubles, Lily advised, “Follow your heart — but prove to your parents how serious you are about painting.”
Taking Lily’s advice, Sarah spent the weekend crafting a series of paintings that laid bare her emotions. She also looked up artists who’d built successful careers out of their art. On Monday evening, she asked her parents into her room, showed them her portfolio (作品集) and notes, and said, “I know you’re worried, but I believe I can make it as an artist — selling online, teaching, or doing custom work. Please give me a chance.” Her parents listened quietly, their faces softening as they looked over her work.

After Sarah finished speaking, there was a long silence in the room. Her father picked up one of her paintings, staring at the vivid colors and careful brushstrokes. “These are really thoughtful,” he said softly. Her mother nodded, reaching out to wipe the remaining tears from Sarah’s cheek. “We were worried you hadn’t thought about the future,” she admitted. “But seeing how hard you’ve worked, we’re willing to support you.” Sarah hugged them tightly, tears of joy replacing her earlier sorrow. They agreed to let her take art classes while keeping up with her studies.
A week later, Sarah received a surprising call from her art teacher. Her art teacher encouraged her to take part in the local youth arts show and told her the details. With her parents' help, she selected three best works from her portfolio. On the opening day, her paintings caught the eye of a gallery owner, who offered to display her work. Standing beside her parents, watching people admire her art, Sarah knew she had made the right choice. Her parents smiled proudly, realizing that passion, paired with effort, could indeed build a bright future.

Passage 2
(2026高二上·浙江·开学考试)
The blank canvas (画布) stared back at me, its whiteness scarier than any exam I’d ever taken. My fingers trembled as I held the paintbrush. “Remember, class,” Mrs. Larson’s voice echoed in my mind, “your final project should reflect your personal journey this semester.” I swallowed hard. Three months ago, I wouldn’t have dared to set foot in this room. Art had always been Mia’s territory (领地) — my best friend since third grade who could make magic happen with just a pencil and paper.
It all started on that rainy September afternoon in the library when I was drawing on my math notebook. Mia had picked it up before I could stop her. “Amazing, Lily!” she said, her green eyes wide with genuine excitement. “The way you play with negative space (留白) ... you have to join art club!”
Now, as I looked at the pile of failed attempts beside me — a sunset that looked like a traffic light. I wondered if I’d made a terrible mistake. The Spring Art Exhibition was just two days away, and my confidence was fading faster than the cheap watercolors on my practice sheets. A soft knock stopped my thoughts. Mia popped her head in. “Still here?” She slid into the seat beside me, eyeing my latest failure. “You’re overthinking it,” she said gently. “Art isn’t about perfection. It’s about...”
“Expression, I know,” I finished for her, sighing. But how could I express what I didn’t even understand myself? The bell rang, signaling the end of after-school hours. Mia hesitated at the door. “Just...try painting how you feel, not what you see.”As her footsteps faded down the hallway, I turned back to the blank canvas. For the first time, I noticed how the afternoon sun streaming through the windows made the white surface shine like fresh snow. Taking a deep breath, I reached for the black paint.

The clock struck midnight as I finally stepped back from the painting stand. Before me stood a not technically perfect painting, but something far more honest — a cloud of dark blues and grays gradually giving way to warm yellows and oranges. In the center, a small but determined figure emerged, her outline formed by the negative space Mia always praised me for noticing. My hands, now covered with every color on the board, trembled not from nervousness but from the genuine emotion I’d poured onto that canvas. For the first time, I understood what Mrs. Larson meant by “personal journey.”
Two days later, I was surprised to see so many people gathering around my work at the exhibition. A freshman girl pointed excitedly, “It’s like watching sunrise after a storm!” Mrs. Larson nodded thoughtfully, murmuring something about “authentic emotional expression” to the principal. Then I noticed Mia in the back, wiping her eyes while giving me two thumbs up. At that moment, surrounded by murmurs of appreciation, I realized art wasn’t about being the best — it was about finding the courage to share your unique perspective with the world. And maybe, just maybe, that was a lesson that applied to more than just painting.

(2026高二上·云南红河·开学考试)
John and his mother lived in a house far from the city. John loved to wander through the forest nearby. In the center of the forest was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. On his wanderings, John would often see animals such as deer and rabbits as he listened to the birds singing in the trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he decided to become a great artist and present all of these breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied at the local high school. Life had not been easy for John and his mother since his father had died. His mother knew how important a good education was in life, but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “How will you earn money as an artist?” she would ask. “It’s not a stable job.” But as John got older, his passion for art became stronger.
Due to their circumstances, buying new paint was a luxury that John could simply not afford. He used a worn drawing file and the limited colors he had to practice his craft. However, this lack of materials did not deter (使打消念头) him from his dream. He spent a significant amount of time in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinctive gift for art, he drew more and more beautifully with each passing day.
One day, John learned that there was going to be a drawing competition in town, and that the deadline for submitting entries (参赛作品) was only two days away. This was the perfect opportunity to fulfill his dream and show off his skills, but as he read the rules, he realized that he needed special paints and brushes for the competition. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew she did not approve.
That evening, his mother returned from work and handed him some money, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was more than enough for the materials he desired! John’s face lit up.

Passage 4
Emily crumpled (揉) the paper and stuffed it into a drawer, her hands trembling. It was the seventh time that she had failed to complete a satisfactory painting. Ever since failing to get into the art academy six months ago, she bad been consumed by self-doubt, her once-lively brushstrokes had turned dull, and even her beloved painting bad become a source of pain.
One day at the hospital, a chance encounter changed everything. While she was waiting for her appointment, a burst of laughter caught her attention. Around the corner, several children gathered around a girl in a wheelchair. She was showing her colorful drawing of a “Dream Town” to other children, where a crooked (歪斜的) sun shed rainbow colors, and crooked houses were covered with blooming flowers. “This is my Dream Town!” the girl declared, her eyes shining with pride. “Even though I can’t walk, my paintbrush can take me anywhere!” she said proudly. Emily was shocked-those “imperfect” strokes she had always hated now seemed full of life.
The next day, Emily volunteered at the children’s ward (病房), art supplies in hand and anxiety in her heart. At first, the children regarded her with curiosity and shyness. But when she sketched a grinning cartoon cat, cries of amazement filled the room. A young boy held up his drawing of a dinosaur. “Miss, my dinosaur can fly!” he announced earnestly.
Days passed in a mass of paint and laughter. Emily stopped chasing “perfection” and instead focused on capturing the sparkles in the children’s eyes. Her brush regained its warmth. She led the children in creating collages (拼贴画) from recycled materials and finger-painting. Through these experiences, she realized that art’s true value lay not in awards, but in conveying emotions and hope.
Three months later, the hospital corridor became a gallery of the children’s works. Among them was a large massive piece. In the bottom right comer, Emily had written, “Every soul can shine its unique light.” Just then, her phone rang. It was an email from the art academy.

Passage 1
(2026高二上·河南平顶山·期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a 53-year-old, I’d never picture myself playing in dirt—let alone mud (泥) —though I loved playing with mud as a kid. It all started about six months earlier: while warming up at the gym, my trainer announced she was signing up for the Mud Girl Run, a women’s 5k challenge race, and asked who wanted to join her team. I kept my head down; after all, I complained about running only a few laps around the parking lot. But she specifically picked me out. I avoided giving a clear answer, “I’ll check my schedule,” but she pushed back—reminding me I’d talked about writing a book on stepping out of comfort zones (舒适区) . Her words stuck, though I still made excuses… until a Chicken Soup for the Soul event. When asked to share new challenges, I publicly committed to the race, gaining many friends who would keep me on track and hold me to it.
Nervous yet excited, I began preparing. I watched YouTube videos of the race, seeing 17 tough parts—like carrying sandbags and running up high hills—all in thick mud. I was scared when I thought about it, but knowing there was an easier way around tough parts made me feel better.
Race day came, and I’d barely slept the night before, yet my son, sister, and parents were up early too, ready to cheer me on. I laughed, sure I was the only 53-year-old with her parents on the sidelines—especially with my dad taking photos with an old camera, a detail my teammates jokingly pointed out.
At the race, the energy hit me instantly. Women filled the area in pink shirts, shiny skirts, and funny hair decorations, their costumes creative and brave. I found my team in matching pink shirts. The loudspeaker loudly played cheerful music and start- time announcements, and a rush of excitement I’d never felt before washed over me. I took a deep breath, telling myself to try every hard part— no regrets. I’d thought this was a“ only do it once” wish list item, so I wanted to give it my all.

I finished every hard part, smiling even with mud all over my clothes and hair. What surprised me most was the women around me: strangers became friends who helped one another, pulling each other over mud walls and shouting encouragement when someone hesitated. When I tripped while climbing a net, a woman behind me shouted, “You’ve got this” and reached out to help. Being part of that supportive group felt more powerful than finishing the race itself. At that moment, I realized how wrong I’d been about the “only do it once” idea—I didn’t just want to cross this off my list; I wanted more.
Now that I’ve tasted that excitement, I can’t just do it once and quit. I had so much fun that I’ve already started looking through local event pages, marking other challenge races to join. My shoes are still covered with mud, but instead of cleaning them right away, I’ve left them by the door—a reminder of how stepping out of my comfort zone at 53 opened a door to new adventures. Who knew mud could lead to something so freeing?

Passage 2
(2026高二上·山西太原·期中)
As a key player on my school’s basketball team, I lived and breathed the game. My best friend David, also my teammate, shared this passion, and we had one hero in common: Stephen Curry. We’d stay late after practice, copying his quick crossovers and long-range shots, chatting about how cool it would be to play like him someday.
Then a big loss hit me hard. It was in the game, which was tied with only 10 seconds left. I got the ball — our team’s last chance to win. But I missed the shot. We lost, and I could see disappointment on my teammates’ faces.
After that, I became a different person. I kept blaming myself, and my confidence totally disappeared. David noticed my struggle right away. He practiced with me alone and wanted to encourage me, “One bad play doesn’t make you a loser.”
I stared at my shoes,” I almost messed it all up. What if I do it again in the championship final?”
David stepped closer, his tone soft but sharp, “Cheer up, Jimmy. Don’t let one failure hold you back. Think about our hero Curry...” He paused, eyes suddenly lighting up like he’d just had a breakthrough, without noticing my whisper “My hero Curry would think I’m a loser too.”
During the training for the championship, I didn’t want to join at all. But when David told me there was a surprise waiting for me in the gym, I hesitated for a moment and finally decided to go check it out.
On stepping into the gym, I noticed the big screen — there was a video from Curry himself — smiling, holding a basketball, saying, “Hey, Jimmy! Mistakes aren’t losses; they’re just lessons waiting to be used. Get back out there, trust your training, and remember: even the best shooters miss. What matters is you take the next shot.”
Moved but confused, how could Curry appear on the screen? Suddenly, I realized it was an AI Curry.

Anyway, I was inspired greatly. I grabbed my basketball and rushed to the court — no more hiding! David laughed as I joined the training, “That’s the guy I know!” Practising day in and day out helped me sharpen my skills. Every time I failed to get a point, Curry’s “next shot” pushed me. For the first time, I didn’t fear mistakes. By the time championship week started, I was ready to perform beyond everyone’s expectations with my accurate shooting and continuous efforts — self-doubt had faded into muscle memory.
I stood confidently on the championship final court, ready to give my all. The cheers of the crowd filling the air, I only focused on the ball. With only ten seconds left, a similar scene unfolded once again. At the moment, the powerful words of David and AI Curry echoed again in my ears. The shot didn’t just score points, for it brought back the player I’d almost lost. Not until I heard claps and cheers around me did I realize that I made it. It was my friend’s firm support and my idol’s inspiring spirit that brought the confidence back into me.

Passage 3
(2026高二上·河北邯郸·期中)
In the beautiful city of Sydney, where the golden beaches met the vast blue ocean, lived a boy named Jake. Jake loved the sea more than anything. Every morning, he ran to Bondi Beach to watch the surfers riding the waves. They sailed across the water like birds in the sky, and Jake dreamed of doing the same one day. But there was one problem — Jake had never surfed before.
One sunny morning, Jake found an old surfboard in his garage (车库). It belonged to his dad, who used to surf when he was younger. Jake dusted it off and carried it to the beach. As he stepped into the water, he felt the cool waves brushing his feet. He placed the board on the water and lay on it, paddling (划水) out like the surfers he had seen. A small wave came, and Jake tried to stand up. But before he could balance, he fell into the water. He tried again. And again. But every time, he fell into the sea. Feeling disappointed, Jake sat on the shore, watching the other surfers. “Maybe I’m not meant to surf,” he thought sadly.
Just then, a tall girl with long hair walked up to him. “Hey, I saw you trying. You’re not bad!” she said with a smile. Jake looked up. “Really? But I keep falling.” “Falling is part of learning,” she said. “I’m Mia, and I’ve been surfing for years. Want some help?” Jake’s eyes lit up. “Yes, please!”
Over the next few days, Jake practiced every morning with Mia. He learned to paddle properly, to catch the right wave, and to stay calm. One day, Mia told him, “I think you’re ready to stand up fully.”
Jake felt nervous but excited. He paddled out, waiting for the wave, and when it came he pushed himself up. And this time, he stood! For a few seconds, he felt like he was flying. Then suddenly, he fell. But this time, he came up laughing. “You did it!” Mia cheered. “You’re getting there!”

One day, Mia told Jake about the local junior surf competition. “It’s a great chance to test what you’ve learned,” she said, her eyes shining with enthusiasm. Jake’s heart skipped a beat — excitement mixed with fear rushed through him. “I... I’m not sure,” he stammered, thinking of his past falls. Mia patted his shoulder gently. “You’ve come so far. Even if you don’t win, it’ll be fun. I’ll be right there cheering for you.” Jake took a deep breath, then nodded firmly. “Okay, I’ll do it!” For the next week, they practiced even harder.
The competition day arrived. The beach was crowded with people, and the waves looked bigger than usual. Jake’s hands trembled a little as he carried his board. When his turn came, he paddled out steadily, just like Mia taught him. He caught a perfect wave, pushed himself up, and stood tall. This time, he didn’t fall—he rode the wave smoothly, turning gently as the crowd cheered. He didn’t win first place, but he felt proud. He’d not only learned to surf but also found the courage to try.

The Real Champion
I loved running more than anything, and to me, success meant nothing but winning every race I joined. My classmates called me “Speedy Tom”, a nickname I showed off like a prize. One autumn day, my school held a sports meet, and I, who had practiced after school for weeks, signed up for nearly all the running events. A big crowd filled the stands, chatting and laughing because everyone knew the running races were the most exciting part of the day. When the 400-meter race started, I dashed forward right away, leaving the other boys far behind. As expected, I crossed the finish line first, and the crowd broke into loud applause. My legs felt tired, but pride rushed through me. I felt like I could win anything.
The 200-meter race came next, and I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I took first place again, and this time the cheers were even louder. I jumped up and down happily, pumping my fists in the air. I didn’t even look at the other runners who held out their hands for a shake. Winning was all I cared about.
Then it was time for the 100-meter race. Most boys gave up before it started, scared off by my two wins. Only one boy stayed: Sam. Sam was born with poor eyesight, but he loved sports and never said no to a chance to compete. The judge walked over to Sam, told him only he and I would race, and asked if he wanted to quit too. But to everyone’s surprise, he shook his head. “I want to finish the race,” he said firmly. I sniffed(嗤之以鼻), saying to myself, “This is a waste of time. He can barely see and probably won’t even find where the finish line is.”
The starting gun went off, and both Sam and I ran forward. I quickly sped up, leaving him far behind. With just 30 meters left, I was already imagining the crowd’s cheers for my third win. But suddenly, a sharp pain hit my calf. My leg had cramped(抽筋)up.

I fell hard to the ground. A sharp pain shot through my leg, and I couldn’t help crying out. Sam, who was just a few steps behind, heard my cry and ran towards me at once. Seeing me lying there in agony, he stopped without any hesitation. "Are you okay?" he asked, his face filled with concern. I was shocked. The boy I had looked down on was helping me instead of taking the chance to win. “My leg... it cramps,” I said in a low voice. He then carefully helped me sit up and gently pressed my leg to ease my pain. “Let me help you finish the race,” he said with a warm smile.
Arm in arm, we walked towards the finish line. The crowd fell into silence at first and then broke into loud clapping to cheer us on. Some people even stood up. With each step, I felt a mix of shame and gratitude. Sam, despite his poor eyesight and my earlier rudeness, was helping me with such kindness. When we finally reached the finish line, the entire audience erupted into thunderous applause. At that moment, I realized that true champions aren’t just those who win races, but those who show compassion and sportsmanship.

Passage 1
(2026高二上·河南濮阳·期中)
I first started wearing glasses at age five. They were thick, black-framed, and many friends said that I looked like Ralphie, a boy in the movie A Christmas Story, always wearing thick glasses. Sadly, they were right. Over the years, my nearsightedness worsened, and my lenses (镜片) became heavier. An obvious depression formed on the bridge of my nose from the weight. I often joked that if the sun shone just right, I could start forest fires.
In my twenties, I got my first pair of thinner lenses. Wearing them felt like wearing nothing at all. Later, polarized (偏光的) sunglasses made the world’s colors clearer than ever before. I thought I had finally seen life fully until my father went blind. Diagnosed (诊断) with macular degeneration, he ignored treatment advice and soon lost most of his vision. Once active, now he could only sit in his chair.
An eye exam showed a small spot of degeneration in my eyes as well. At first, it seemed minor, but the next year it affected both eyes. Then came a cataract operation, which helped, but my vision problems were far from over. Just before retirement, I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a disease that weakens muscles including those controlling the eyes. My eyelids became too tired to stay open, and unclear vision struck several times a day.
The final warning came at a neuro-ophthalmologist’s office. Covering my left eye, I read the chart-but a large black shadow blocked most of my vision. Overnight, I became legally blind in that eye. My fear of injections (注射) was greater than the fear of blindness, yet the only way to save my sight was through eye injections.
Both eyes needed treatment, and I would face four injections in total. My heart raced as I imagined the process. I felt a mix of fear, determination, and hope, knowing that these injections were my only chance to keep seeing the world I loved.

I made up my mind finally. I would face the injections without letting fear control me. On the day of the first treatment, my hands trembled, but I reminded myself that courage was not the absence of fear, but acting despite it. The doctor explained each step carefully, and the nurses offered gentle encouragement. As the needle approached my eye, I focused on my breathing, imagining the vibrant colors of a sunset I might still see. One by one, I endured all four injections, my determination carrying me through the hardest moments.
I began to notice small improvements in my vision. Shapes grew sharper, colors brighter, and shadows less threatening. With each subsequent improvement, my confidence grew alongside my eyesight. Simple joys, like reading a book or watching leaves dance in the wind, became celebrations of persistence and hope. I realized that my journey with vision problems had taught me patience, resilience, and the value of facing challenges head-on. Life, I understood, was about truly seeing the beauty in every moment rather than perfect sight.

Passage 2
(2026高二上·河南南阳·阶段练习)
Anthony, a 16-year-old student at Lancaster High School near Buffalo, loved playing basketball. He was known among his classmates for being funny and friendly. However, when his school added a new task to learn first-aid knowledge, especially CPR (心肺复苏), Anthony didn’t like the idea at all.
The school had organized several first-aid classes as part of the health course. Anthony thought the lessons were a waste of time. He believed such skills were only helpful in very rare situations and that he would never need them. But his good friend David thought differently. David was very interested in the classes and kept telling Anthony how important first-aid skills were. “Anthony, you never know when these skills might be useful,” David said again and again. “It’s better to be prepared than regret it later.” Under David’s encouragement, Anthony decided to give it a try. Although the training was harder than Anthony expected, both he and David did a good job. “You’re really good at this!” David laughed as Anthony correctly placed his hands on the mannequin (人体模型) for CPR practice.
Late on Wednesday night, March 19, Anthony’s CPR skills were suddenly put to the test. His stepfather, Michael, who had a family history of heart disease, suddenly collapsed at the bottom of the stairs. Their barking dogs woke up his mother, Jennifer. She ran to find her husband unconscious and, completely panicked, called for Anthony’s help.
Anthony rushed downstairs and saw his stepfather lying on the floor, not moving. His mother was panicking, unsure of what to do. She cried, “Oh no, what do I do? What do I do?” After she called 911, the operator on the phone told her to start CPR immediately. Jennifer was too scared and overwhelmed to act, but Anthony, who had learned CPR just weeks earlier, quickly stepped in.

Anthony started performing CPR on his stepfather. Remembering the lessons from the health class, he carefully kept the right rhythm. For about eight minutes, he pressed on his stepfather’s chest and tried to keep him stable even when his pulse grew weaker. Anthony refused to give up and continued his effort until his stepfather finally started breathing again. Exhausted but relieved, Anthony stepped back as the rescue workers arrived. They immediately rushed Michael to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed that Anthony’s quick actions saved his stepfather’s life and also prevented serious brain damage while waiting for help to come.
After spending a week in the hospital, Michael was able to return home. He was deeply thankful for Anthony’s quick response. “I’m so lucky to have him here,” Michael said, giving Anthony a big hug. Anthony also realized the importance of learning CPR and first-aid skills. He thanked his friend David for encouraging him to learn. “If it weren’t for all this, I don’t think I would have learned CPR, and Michael might not have survived,” Anthony admitted. This whole experience didn’t just save his stepfather’s life, but it also made Anthony truly believe in the value of learning first-aid knowledge. Now, whenever Anthony runs into David, he smiles, “Thanks for making me take those lessons, David. You were right all along.”

Passage 3
(2026高二上·辽宁沈阳·阶段练习)
I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn’t notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me.
However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too. “Help! Help!” We cried. I could feel my body aching as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn’t able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.
Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily.
Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.

Another huge wave crashed over my head and pulled me under. Choking on seawater, I was beaten wildly, my arms and legs growing heavier with exhaustion. Just as I could not see clearly, my sister’s desperate cry was heard above the noise — she was swimming toward me against the waves, her face twisted with effort. “Hold on!” she shouted, her fingers locking around my wrist like a rope. But the ocean was merciless, with every stroke using up her remaining strength, and her movements became slow. My lungs needed air very much, and a cold thought came to me: We might not make it. The waves seemed to laugh at our struggle, their great and unstoppable force pulling us further from safety. Just then, the cries of the two boys gave us new hope.
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard. With the speed of a man who had faced such dangers many times, the lifeguard dived into the big sea, his strong arms cutting through the water like knives. Soon, he reached us, his hold firm and making us feel safe. “I’ve got you! ”he shouted above the wind, pulling me onto his rescue ring before turning back for my sister. The boys, now joined by other people on the beach, pulled me to the beach, their faces showing both relief and fear. As I collapsed onto the sand, coughing up seawater, I watched the lifeguard pulling my sister to safety, her weak body showing a clear contrast to his strong and steady strength. Tears of gratitude welled up — we were alive, thanks to these strangers’ bravery.

Passage 4
(2026高三上·四川巴中·开学考试)
Any day when I had to travel by air was the worst day of my life, but as a salesman, I had to fly quite a bit. On this particular day in 2024, I was assigned to a middle seat. Unfortunately, I was so fat that I couldn’t fit down the aisle facing forward, so I was forced to walk sideways like a crab. My weight varied between 340 and 360 pounds, depending on whether to take it before or after one of my enormous meals. When finally squeezing into my seat, I found the seat belt wasn’t long enough to fit around my 52-inch waist.
At that moment, I was stricken by an intense desire to lose weight. I began looking for signs which would guide me toward a better life, and instantly a sign showed up. At the switch of TV, I happened to see an interview with a former world athlete. He said that a doctor put him on a whole-food, plant-based diet and offered a good care of him. He lost weight without feeling hungry, and he was healthier and stronger than he’d been since his twenties. I never imagined my sign would come from him, but there he was.
I didn’t know what a “whole-food, plant-based diet” means. I went online and searched for a doctor who could help me. That’s how I found Robert, an experienced medical specialist. Hope fell on me when he promised to see me the next day. The doctor recommended a low calorie diet and some physical exercises to do in my home. He also made a suggestion that I should go to a shelter and adopt a dog. “Excuse me?” I couldn’t believe what he said. But, he added, “A dog is a good companion. While you live in an apartment, the dog has to be walked. Walking your dog twice a day will be your exercise. I’m sure it can improve not only your health but also the quality of your life.”

【参考范文】
With disbelief and hesitation, I drove up to a dog shelter near where I lived. The moment the dogs caught sight of a stranger, they burst out barking. It was difficult to choose one of them. At that moment, a large black-and-white dog yawning in the corner caught my attention. His round body reminded me of my size and what Robert said. He was perfect for me! Crouching down and stroking his furry head, I couldn’t help imagining the picture in which we both exercised our way to become slim and charming.
I came back home with the large black-and-white dog with a big round body. I named him David, who often lay motionless on the floor and yawned with eyes half-closed. I made up my mind to change both of us. Shortly afterward, I found a ball, dragged David to the nearby park and threw it at him. Driven by natural instinct, David leapt forward to catch the ball. Little by little, I could walk David twice a day. One month later, I suddenly realized that there was no need for me to walk like a crab on the plane. Surprisingly, David also became lean and healthy.

Passage 1
I had applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. As you know, the Chinese are famous for their food. They cook delicious food and obtain a simple pleasure from eating.
So, I was not surprised when my new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job. He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. I was nervous.
I knew we would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique, I had completely failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression? Would I make a complete fool of myself?
That evening, I called a friend and asked her to explain exactly how to use chopsticks. She patiently explained the proper way of holding them between the thumb (拇指), first and middle fingers. “It’s not that hard,” she said. “That’s easy for you to say,” I replied. “You’ve been eating with chopsticks all your life. It’s natural for you”!
I didn’t get much sleep that evening. I kept turning around in bed all night, worrying about lunch the next day.
The next day, I could hardly contain my anxiety. It was difficult to get any work done in the morning. At noon, I left with my boss and two co-workers and headed to the restaurant.
We were seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the server in Chinese. My heart was pounding, but then I noticed a strange thing. Instead of the customary chopsticks, each of us had knives, forks, and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with the chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment, so he had called ahead and arranged for us to be served with knives and forks. I couldn’t believe how kind and helpful he was.

(2026高二上·浙江温州·期中)

Passage 3

话题4 体育精神(人与社会)

Passage 4
(2026高二上·广西·期中)

话题5 医疗健康(人与社会)

话题6 饮食健康(人与自我)

Passage 2
I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen. He wasn’t Chinese. For Christmas, I wished for this golden-haired boy Robert and a perfect American nose.
When I learned that my parents had invited the minister’s family to our Christmas-Eve dinner, I panicked. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas, of my noisy relatives with unfashionable manners, of a table without roast turkey but full of Chinese dishes?
On Christmas Eve, my mother seemed determined to worked extra hard. The kitchen was filled with the smell of raw seafood and ginger. A slippery fish with big eyes was ready to be cooked in oil.
Soon the doorbell rang again and again as the minister’s family and all my relatives crowded in, arms full of gifts and loud conversation. Robert muttcred “hello”, and I pretended I did not notice him.
Dinner made me feel even worse. My grandmother loudly slurped (啜饮着) her hot-and-sour soup, a sound that always meant “delicious” in our family. When my aunt placed a plate of chicken feet on the table, Robert’s little brother pointed and whispered, “Those look like toes!” My mother proudly served a dish of stinky tofu, whose strong smell filled the room instantly. Robert’s father pushed the plate away, shaking his head, while my cousin took a big bite and said, “It smells bad, but tastes great!”
Just as tension peaked, my father beamed and plunged his chopsticks into the steamed fish. Expertly, he lifted a shining piece of the tender belly and placed it onto Robert’s plate. “The best part for our guest!” he boomed. Then my father slid his chopsticks just below the fish’s eye, lifted out the soft cheek, and dropped it into my bowl. “Amy, your favorite,” he announced. I wanted to disappear.
Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddened face and I was stunned into silence for the rest of the night, certain this Christmas Eve would haunt my memories forever.

Passage 3
Nilsa stared at the clock on the classroom wall, daydreaming about lunch. Her mother had prepared a thermos (保温瓶) full of sancocho. It was one of Nilsa’s favorite dishes, and the national dish of Panama — a country in central America and the hometown of Nilsa’s family. Just thinking about sancocho made her mouth water.
Finally, it was time for lunch. Nilsa carefully poured some sancocho into a bowl. When she looked up, she saw her classmates staring.
“What is that? It smells really bad,” said Gus, covering his nose. “It’s sancocho,” Nilsa responded. “It’s kind of like chicken soup.” Codi glanced at the bowl and said, “Soup? It’s more like a science experiment.” He laughed, pointed to his lunch, and asked, “That’s one weird lunch. Why don’t you eat something normal, like pizza?”
Nilsa looked at everyone else’s lunches: pizza, fries, and sandwiches. Suddenly she didn’t feel hungry any more.
When Nilsa returned home and complained about her classmates’ negative comments, her mother wasn’t mad. Instead, she listened attentively and reminded Nilsa that there is no such thing as “normal” or “weird” food, and that different cultures have their own unique dishes that are loved and appreciated by those who grew up with them.
Nilsa’s mother also suggested making a fresh batch for Nilsa to bring to school the next day. “Then you can share it with your classmates and tell them sancocho tastes great, and that our family has been eating it for hundreds of years. Your great-grandmother taught your grandmother who then taught me.
Nilsa nodded in excitement, and she was grateful for the opportunity to share her favorite dish with her classmates.

Passage 4
When Judy was younger, she thought that her grandmother was the best cook in the entire world. Every time she visited her grandmother with her family she would be treated to lots of delicious food — buttery shortbread cookies and plates of crispy cheese crackers to snack on; piles of pancakes for breakfast; golden fried chickens and thick, hearty soups for dinner. No one would ever leave hungry or sad when they visited grandmother’s house.
But, as Judy grew older, she started to notice that her grandmother had begun to cook less and less. The complicated meals grew simpler, and the visits to her grandmother’s beautiful life-filled home grew fewer. Eventually, Samantha’s parents told her the truth: her grandmother had arthritis (关节炎) in her hands, which meant it was too painful for her to cook the elegant dishes.
“Why don’t we visit grandmother and just get food from a restaurant?” she asked. It seemed to her too cruel just to visit when her grandmother could cook for them and to pay no visit when her grandmother was sick.
Her parents smiled, appreciating their daughter’s kind heart, and told her they had suggested this but the idea had been rejected, “Your grandmother loves cooking. It saddens her to be reminded that she can’t share her food any more because of her illness.” Judy told her parents she understood, but she silently determined to find a way to help.
A few weeks later, Judy stopped by her grandmother’s house to deliver some groceries. As she carefully put away the boxes and cans in the kitchen cabinets, Judy discovered something she had never seen before. Sitting on one of the highest shelves was a small wooden box. Her curiosity aroused, Judy took the box down from the shelf and opened the lid.
Inside were hundreds of index cards and on each one was a hand-written recipe (食谱)! Her hands shaking with excitement, Judy flipped through the cards. She recognized all of her grandmother’s classic recipes — the cookies, the pancakes, the soups. They were all here!
