They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”(60多年来,吴明珠及其团队培育了30多个品种的甜瓜,将甜瓜的甜美带给人们,并将具有中国特色且拥有完整育种创新体系的西瓜系列推向了世界。 B。 Jeans are usually dyed with indigo But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance doesn’t easily mix into water. Thus, strong chemicals are used to break it down into a liquid that can turn the cloth blue. Each year, thousands of tons of these strong chemicals go into making jeans, already hurting the workers who handle them, let alone the fact that some of the chemicals can cause cancer. So Qvortrup, a chemist, wanted to find a safer and greener way to make jeans blue. For their new dyeing technique, the researchers chose to use indican (糖芥), a substance in plants that can help produce natural indigo dye and break down in water without harmful chemicals. Their first idea was to mix indican with an enzyme that would change it to indigo. It worked— the cloth turned blue within a few minutes. But then the team also placed pieces of cloth in indican alone and left them by the window in their lab. And to their surprise, these “were also turning blue without us doing anything,” Qvortrup said. As their research went on, the team found that sunlight could react with the indican on the cloth and turn it to indigo. Then, the team placed more cloth in an indican-only liquid under different light sources. “Over the next couple of hours, the cloth will turn blue, proving that the light will catalyze the color,” Qvortrup added. These methods are both promising. The enzyme-based method cut out the harmful impacts by more than 90 percent, compared to normal jeans dyeing and the light-driven dyeing might cut the impacts by more than 70 percent, the researchers said. However, the light method might take up less land than the enzyme method, and if the researchers can cut out electricity costs by dyeing with just sunlight, the light method may prove even better for the environment. “I hope these methods will have an impact even before they reach factories. Simply learning about more sustainable ways to make jeans may make jean-wearers think about where their clothes come from. If you want to wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways to make them than are used right now,” Qvortrup said. 8. What is the problem with the traditional way of dyeing jeans? A. Covering high labor costs. B. Missing the mark in fashion. C. Harming jeans makers’ health. D. Struggling with mass production. 9. What does “catalyze” in paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. hide. B. Develop. C. Remove. D. Match. 10. What is the advantage of light-driven dyeing over enzyme-based dyeing? A Its space-saving capability. B. Its little side effect on cloth. C. Its efficiency in energy use. D. Its independence from electricity. 11. What do Qvortrup’s words in the last paragraph mainly imply? A. Improving factory equipment helps. B. Using green dye changes everything. C. Developing new dyes requires attention. D. Raising consumer awareness matters. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据文章第一段中的“Each year, thousands of tons of these strong chemicals go into making jeans, already hurting the workers who handle them, let alone the fact that some of the chemicals can cause cancer.(每年,成千上万吨的强化学物质被用于制作牛仔裤,这已经伤害了处理这些化学物质的工人,更不用说其中一些化学物质会致癌了。)” 根据文章第三段中的“As their research went on, the team found that sunlight could react with the indican on the cloth and turn it to indigo. Then, the team placed more cloth in an indican - only liquid under different light sources. ‘Over the next couple of hours, the cloth will turn blue, proving that the light will catalyze the color,’ Qvortrup added.(随着研究的继续,研究小组发现阳光可以与布料上的靛苷反应,将其变成靛蓝。 根据文章第四段中的“However, the light method might take up less land than the enzyme method, and if the researchers can cut out electricity costs by dyeing with just sunlight, the light method may prove even better for the environment.(然而,光照法可能比酶法占用更少的土地,而且如果研究人员能够仅用阳光染色来节省电力成本,光照法可能对环境更有利。)” 故选A。 根据文章最后一段中Qvortrup说的话“I hope these methods will have an impact even before they reach factories. Simply learning about more sustainable ways to make jeans may make jean - wearers think about where their clothes come from. If you want to wear blue jeans, be aware that there are better ways to make them than are used right now.(我希望这些方法在进入工厂之前就能产生影响。 D。 When we’re angry, we often look for ways to blow off steam - a vent (发泄) session with a friend, a long run, or even a few rounds of boxing are common options. But, according to new research, this actually isn’t the best way to cope with anger. These activities can have the opposite effect. A study published in Clinical Psychology Review shows that mindfulness activities, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing, are much more effective in reducing anger. Sophie Kjærvik, an expert at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the study at Ohio State University. She was inspired by the rise in popularity of rage rooms, which promote smashing things as a way to cope with anger. “I wanted to disprove the theory of expressing anger as a way of coping with it,” she said. Kjærvik and her team analyzed over 150 studies involving 10,189 participants of different backgrounds. The analysis was guided by the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory, which states that emotions are guided by physiological arousal (激活) and cognitive assessment. Kjærvik wanted to see how arousal levels affect people’s abilities to cope with anger. The team analyzed activities that increased arousal, such as hitting a bag, jogging, cycling, and swimming, versus arousal-decreasing activities. They discovered that mindfulness activities like deep breathing, relaxation, meditation, slow-flow yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, and taking a timeout all decreased anger levels. “I think it’s really important to break the myth that if you’re angry you should blow off steam - get it off your chest,” says Brad Bushman, a professor at Ohio State University. “Venting anger might sound like a good idea, but there’s not a shred of scientific evidence to support catharsis (宣泄) theory. To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels.” While these findings might contradict popular instincts, the best approach is to use the same strategies we adopt to combat stress. “Progressive muscle relaxation and general relaxation might be as effective as mindfulness and meditation,” Kjærvik says. “The same strategies that work for stress also work for anger.” 12. What was the main purpose of Sophie Kjærvik’s study? A. To promote the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory. B. To compare different physical activities in reducing anger. C. To challenge the idea that expressing anger can manage anger. D. To confirm the function of rage rooms in coping with anger. 13. Which is correct according to the discovery of the study? A. Rage rooms work in releasing anger. B. Reducing arousal helps to alleviate anger. C. Arousal plays the role as an anger extinguisher. D Deep breathing and meditation can boost arousal. 14. What is Brad Bushman’s attitude towards catharsis theory? A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical. 15. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Venting Anger: the Broken Myth for Anger Management B. Mindfulness Activities: an Alternative to Reducing Anger C. Arousal Increase: Mindfulness Activities Outperforming Venting D. Managing Emotions: Physical Activities as an Effective Approach 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段“A study published in Clinical Psychology Review shows that mindfulness activities, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing, are much more effective in reducing anger. 根据倒数第二段的最后一句“To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels. 根据倒数第二段““I think it’s really important to break the myth that if you’re angry you should blow off steam — get it off your chest,” says Brad Bushman, a professor at Ohio State University. “Venting anger might sound like a good idea, but there’s not a shred of scientific evidence to support catharsis (宣泄) theory. To reduce anger, it is better to engage in activities that decrease arousal levels.” Chinese people may not be that familiar with sports tourism, but it is one of the fastest growing parts of tourism, because an increasing number of people are expressing their curiosity in sports events during their trips even if sports are not the key reason for their travel.____16____These popular outdoor activities perfectly meet people’s new demand for “combining travel with activities”. Wu spent years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way, winning over the local farmers accustomed (习惯的) to folk cultivation methods. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang’s main goods areas, and a group of melon-rich villages appeared. For more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team have cultivated more than 30 varieties, brought the sweetness of melons to people, and promoted the melon series with Chinese characteristics and a complete breeding innovation system to the world. When first hearing her nickname of “a pearl in the Turpan Basin”, Wu said, “in Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.” 4. What’s the purpose of mentioning Yuan in paragraph 1? A. To tell us Wu’s classmates and social circle. B. To let us get a further understanding of Wu. C. To make a comparison between Wu and Yuan. D. To prove Wu’s success resulting from Yuan’s help. 5. What do we know about Wu from paragraph 2? A She completed her education at 34. B. She was born in a medical family. C. She majored in Engineering at college. D. She preferred to research in the fields. 6. How did Wu persuade the locals to adopt her way of producing melons? A. By expanding the planting areas. B. By sharing expert knowledge with them. C. By providing enough financial assistance. D. By developing high-quality melons scientifically. 7. Which words can best describe Wu? A. Patient and thoughtful. B. Devoted and modest. C. Humorous and energetic. D. Confident and honest. Jeans are usually dyed with indigo But this dark purple-blue dyeing substance doesn’t easily mix into water. A. Its space-saving capability. When we’re angry, we often look for ways to blow off steam - a vent (发泄) session with a friend, a long run, or even a few rounds of boxing are common options.
