Do you like music? Have you ever enjoyed country music? Country music is very old and has a long history. It came from the United States, Canada, Ireland and Great Britain. It is a mixture (混合) of music from all of these places.
In the west of America, cowboys (牛仔) had to take care of the cattle (牛). They had to watch them all day and all night, because the cattle were nervous and sometimes ran away. A cowboy’s life was lonely and dangerous. When he was alone in the desert with the cattle, he drank strong coffee to keep awake at night. He also sang songs to the cattle to make them quiet. He sang about the stars and the moon, about his family and his friend. The cattle listened to the cowboy and went to sleep. They would not run away if he sang beautiful and peaceful songs.
In the south of America, many people came from Ireland, Scotland and England. Other people came from France and Canada. They enjoyed their own kind of music. They used guitars, violins and other musical instruments. They also added instruments from their homes, like bottles and plates. When they visited their friends and families on holidays, they usually sang and played country music.
Country music describes life clearly. It talks about love, jobs, home and money. It talks about friends and enemies, trucks and highways, farms and crops. People in many parts of the world like country music because everyone knows something about these ideas. Also, many country music fans wear Western clothes and dance together to country music. Many bands all over the world now perform country music.

A. By giving an example. B. By asking questions.

Now pollution problems are hot topics. We know many things have led to the problems. Factories make tons of plastic (塑料) bottles, plastic straws and metal cans. These things are difficult to clear up. They stay on the earth for over 100 years since they can’t be broken down easily. However, more and more people have realized this problem and chosen to go “green”. Both the customers and the companies are changing in some ways.
On the one hand, customers hope that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions about the environment. Will this shower cream be bad for the environment? Can we reuse this box? A recent study showed that 40% of adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it.
On the other hand, companies now change the way they make and sell their products. Only by doing this can the companies make sure that they are “green” and friendly to the environment. A few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry marks to show that the product is green. Some companies also make some ads which are good for the environment. The care for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies think how they do business.
In a word, people will no longer accept the old attitude to “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” And more businesses and customers play a part in protecting the environment.
16. Why is it difficult to clear up plastic bottles and metal cans?
A. They are too heavy. B. They cannot be broken down easily.
C. Factories make too many of them. D. People don’t collect them.
17. What do many customers now consider before buying a product?
A. Its price. B. Its popularity.
C. Its size and color. D. Its environmental safety.
18. What does the study show about adults?
A. Two fifths of adults think about the environment before buying.
B. Most adults never use plastic products.
C. All adults choose green products now.
D. Half of them refuse to buy metal cans.
19. What does the word “green” mean in the text?
A. The color green. B. Environmentally friendly.
C. Fresh and healthy. D. Made of plants.
20. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show the advantages (优点) of green products.
B. To tell the importance of environmental safety.
C. To introduce the rise of green products.
D. To explain the difficulties of environmental protection.

My special gift
My special gift is a second-hand book called The Little Prince. It was given to me by my grandfather on my 12th birthday.
Last year, my grandfather was ill in hospital. I felt very sad and lonely. One day, he handed me this book and said, “The most beautiful things in life are often invisible, like love and courage.” His words deeply touched me. Now, whenever I miss him, I read his notes. They make me feel strong and hopeful.
This book is not just a gift; it is a precious memory of my grandfather’s wisdom and love. It teaches me to value the unseen beauty in life.
