75-year-old hip-hop (街舞) grandma Stephanie Walsh has gained worldwide attention with her intense dance moves and incredible energy. Better known as “Ms. Stephanie” online, Walsh has been featured on social media accounts with some videos drawing more than 11 million people to watch.
Walsh believes the videos gained popularity because she is 75. “It’s because I’m a senior,” said Walsh. “You don’t usually see someone my age doing hip-hop and moving like that.” But actually, it’s more than that. Just as her profile claims, Walsh’s videos are “inspiring the world to dance like no one is watching”.
“Dance isn’t just your body, it’s what you’re feeling inside about the dance and it’s what comes out here in your face,” Walsh said. “What I want to put through my movement is how much fun it is and how much joy it gives you.”
From a young age, Walsh loved to dance but her family didn’t have the money for classes. When she was nearly 30, she got her daughter ballet lessons, which her daughter hated. So, she took her daughter out and started classes herself right away.
Walsh believes her lifelong passion for dance is what motivates her today. “Everybody has to have a passion in their life,” she said. “It’s like that saying, ‘A life without passion is a life half lived.’ I believe that.”
Walsh dances for fun and fitness, but also for therapy She struggled through countless hardships, and she has more than enough reasons to keep her down. But they don’t. She turns to her faith, her friends and of course, dance, to shine as an inspiration to those around her.
Gilbert, one of Walsh’s followers, says she inspires him every day. “She’s a beautiful soul who teaches me that it doesn’t matter about your age or your size. As long as you feel good, that’s all that matters,” says Gilbert. “I am truly thankful that Walsh is teaching me at the age of 32 to live my life full and stop being so scared.”
4. What contributes to her videos’ popularity according to Walsh?
A. Her advanced age. B. Her smooth moves. C. Her endless energy. D. Her confident claim.
5. What motivates Walsh to do hip-hop?
A. Its great social benefit. B. Its growing popularity.
C. Her enthusiasm for dance. D. Her hunger for reputation.
6. What will Walsh’s story probably inspire Gilbert to do?
A. Be active in social media. B. Set a good example to others.
C. Take full advantage of his talent. D. Adopt a positive approach to life.
7. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Optimistic About Life: The Way to Survive.
B. Forever Young in Dance: An Inspiring Figure.

Tobogganing, or sledding (雪橇),likely comes before the colonization of North America.Records show that Canada's First Peoples used small sleds to transport their belongings and food between camps, Raymond Flower writes in The History of Skiing and Other Winter Sports. But modern-day sled races can trace their origins back to the Swiss Alps in the late 1800s when British tourists decided to race in wooden luges (a sled used by one person) that locals had used to travel through snow. The origin is debatable in snowy northern New York, however, where there is evidence that Albany held bobsled (a sled used by two or more people) races as early as 1885.
Wherever they began, sled races quickly became popular. The famous Cresta Run,named after the Swiss town near the base of its course, was built in 1885 using snowbanks. The first organized competition was in 1898,hostedby the first bobsled club in nearby St.Moritz (a city in Switzerland). It was then that sledding began to separate from the luge to include two new sports: bob sledding, and skeleton sledding
Cresta Run is considered the birthplace of the skeleton, a particularly daring form of sledding.Unlike the luge, where competitors ride feet-first on a sled with metal runners, the skeleton sledding is a steel sled with a slim appearance.Riders lie down on the sled headfirst, then drop suddenly down an ice track.Bobsledding, meanwhile, involves teams of two to four in which the person in front controls directions and the player in back brakes when needed. It earned its name after competitors started swinging back and forth to speed up the sled.
Bobsledding initially overtook skeleton sledding in popularity, becoming one of a handful of sports played at the first Winter Games in 1924.The skeleton sledding was limited to the Cresta Run for decades because other bob runs around the world were not built for the steel skeleton sled. But in the 1970s,adjustments were made to both the skeleton and bob runs in order to include the event at future winter games.
8.What can we infer about Raymond Flower?
A. He is a writer. B. He is good at sledding
C. He invented the sledding race D. He set the first record of sledding
9.How does skeleton sledding differ from the luge?
A. Skeleton sledding runs on metal runners.
B. Skeleton sledding doesn't have back brakes.
C. Riders on Skeleton sledding Sled with their feet.
D. Skeleton sledding needs players to lie down on it headfirst.
10.What limited the popularity of skeleton sledding?
A. Its special shape B. Its speed
C. Its steel runners. D. Its unsuitable adjustments.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why is sledding so popular?
B. How did sledding develop in Switzerland?
C. What are sledding adventures about?
D. How did people kill time in North America?
D
Anxious about returning to work after a career break? You post about your troubles online and two strangers reply. Stranger 1: “I understand your anxiety; your courage matters.” Stranger 2: “I’ve struggled with the same problem. Just jump in!” Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?
Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.
The secret to the chatbots’ success lies in mistakes humans make. When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker. In a 2024 study, Microsoft’s Bing Chat scored higher than humans by using a three-step method: explaining people’s struggles, acknowledging and justifying how they might feel, and asking follow-up questions.
Humans can also adopt similar strategies like “looping for understanding”—repeating others’ words in their own terms and checking correctness (“Do I have that right?”). Chatbots are natural loopers, and when humans learn it, they better understand others’ emotions and make them feel heard. These skills extend beyond strengthening family and friend bonds: dozens of studies show managers and employers using such methods tend to have more loyal, effective, and productive employees.
Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits. Chatbots repeat formulaic (公式化的) responses (“I hear you”) that feel robotic over time. They can’t feel or truly care for us, and studies show most human beings still want to engage with other humans. Some of the bugs of human connection are also, in fact, features. Chatbots can’t roll their eyes or leave our texts unanswered. But the fact that we often must earn human empathy, and that it comes from limited beings who sacrifice (牺牲) to be there for us, is part of its beauty.
12.What is the author’s purpose in quoting the two strangers’ replies?
A.To compare two ways of giving advice.
B.To introduce a psychological phenomenon.
C.To suggest how to overcome anxiety.
D.To criticize human’s communication.
13.What does the underlined phrase “fell short of” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Differed from. B.Failed to match. C.Did better than. D.Were in need of.
14.What can humans learn from chatbots’ empathy strategies?
A.To provide direct solutions. B.To stress shared stories.
C.To correct speakers’ mistakes. D.To avoid self-centered responses.
15.What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?
A.AI is an impressive listener. B.Human empathy is valuable.
C.AI responds to human’s pain calmly. D.There are problems with human interaction.

How to Stay Focused in Class
You want to learn, you want to listen to your teacher, and you want to absorb all of that information in class — but it can be hard to focus on a lecture when your mind wanders. So staying focused in class is essential for effective learning. Here are some tips to help you pay attention in class.
Remove distractions. If you want to concentrate in class, start by removing distractions. Physical removal is the best way to deal with distractions. 16 Or if you have a habit of using your phone, keep it in your locker.
Prepare before class. Look over your homework, read your textbook, or review previous notes. This will get your brain into “class mode” and help you focus. Additionally, set up your desk or workspace before class and make sure you have everything you need. 17
Sit in the front of the class. 18 Studies show that students who sit in the front generally have better grades. Avoid sitting with friends if you’re not tempted to talk. Sitting in the front allows you to keep an eye on the teacher and board.
Participate in Class. Contributing to the lesson by asking and answering questions can keep you engaged. It also signals to the teacher that you’re trying to pay attention. 19 Write down important parts of the lesson and use different colors or a highlighter to make key points stand out. You can also reorganize it after class for further research.
20 Focus on the present moment and avoid daydreaming. If your mind wanders, refocus on the lesson. Create your own motivation by finding personal connections, interesting facts, or setting small goals. Reward yourself after completing tasks. Practice paying attention through activities like meditation. If you’re struggling, talk to your teachers. They can offer personalized solutions.
Taking care of your body. Getting enough sleep is crucial. Aim for 8 to 12 hours for optimal focus. Have a healthy diet with foods like leafy greens, fatty fish, berries, and nuts. Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and sugary drinks. Exercise can relieve tension and improve concentration. Try to be active between classes or during breaks.
A.Practice paying attention.
B.Adjust your thought patterns.
C.If your mind wanders, focus on the lesson.
D.Taking notes is another great way to focus.
E.This can help you stay organized and ready to learn.
F.A better environment can help you focus more on the lesson.
G.If you know a classmate is distracting you, try sitting somewhere else.

For twelve years, I had worked at the hospital. One day, they informed me that I was no longer needed. I knew it was a cost-cutting measure to replace me with someone less experienced and lower-paid, yet the pain of feeling useless remained.
When I was sad and worried about my future, a fellow health educator at another hospital shared, “I’ve just learned the most helpful tool. No matter what the situation is, there is an opposite, a benefit. Our typical response is to focus on the losses of jobs, marriage, home, or even health. Instead, we should concentrate on finding what we gained with our loss.”
At first, I resisted(抵制) her advice. I was so focused on my job that I forgot my dream of traveling around the world in a trailer (拖车) and all the things I wanted to do when I was busy. I only yearned (渴望) to get my job back, missing my office, coworkers, and the routine, as well as the meaningful challenges of organizing health education classes for sick people.
But as time went by, I grew tired of my sorrow and loneliness. I decided to try my friendˈs advice and seek some opposites. The opposite of loneliness being friendship, I called Lucy, a kind-hearted neighbor. I asked if she would like to take an exercise class with me and started to develop a friendship with her. Soon, we became good friends, often going shopping together and taking a walk every day.
Then one day, Lucy invited me to go to Mali, West Africa, to volunteer there. It was a poor area where people lived in mud huts without modern conveniences. However, the villagers seemed content.

Yesterday, our school held a successful Campus Environmental Protection Day to raise students’ awareness of green living.
The event featured various activities. Some students displayed creations made from recycled materials. Others gave enthusiastic speeches on eco-conservation, while still others gave practical tips on reducing plastic use. A highlight was the Campus-wide Litter Collecting Campaign, in which everyone took an active part. These activities made environmental protection feel real and fun.
The day was warmly welcomed. Students said they now know more ways to protect the environment and will start with small daily actions. It was truly a meaningful day.
When volunteering there, I helped the villagers and also got helped. Lucy and I had brought many soccer balls, pens, and clothes, expecting to help the poor villagers. Meanwhile, I taught the local children basic hygiene (卫生) knowledge and simple first-aid skills, hoping to improve their health awareness. What I didn’t expect was that the villagers, in turn, taught me so much more. Some villagers showed us how to make simple but delicious local food with limited ingredients, while a young man taught us their traditional dance, filling our days with joy and laughter. Their warmheartedness and positive attitude towards life despite hardships deeply touched me, making me understand the true meaning of contentment.
Returning home with a different perspective, I decided to make a change. I realized that losing my job was not the end but a new beginning. I decided to fully embrace my dream of traveling in a trailer. Lucy joined me, and together we carefully planned our routes, eager to explore more unknown places and experience different cultures. Along the way, I continued to volunteer in various communities, sharing my medical knowledge. Every encounter with new people and every place I visited broadened my horizons and enriched my soul. I also kept in touch with the villagers in Mali, and our friendship transcended geographical boundaries. My life, once filled with despair, was now brimming with hope and contentment, all thanks to that fateful job loss and the journey of self-discovery that followed. I finally understood that losing my job was not an end but a new beginning, which led me to a life full of adventures, friendships, and self-discovery.

根据第一段中的“Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?(研究表明,大多数人认为陌生人1更有同理心——但它通常是一个聊天机器人。惊讶吗?)”可知,作者引用两个陌生人的回复是为了引出聊天机器人更具同理心这一心理现象。故选B项。
13题详解.
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.(研究表明,聊天机器人在同理心方面经常胜过人类。
根据第三段中的“When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker.(当人类看到有人处于痛苦中时,我们经常会分享个人经历(“我也经历过挣扎”)或急于给出建议(“这么做!”)。虽然是出于好意,但急于发表看法可能会轻视对方的痛苦,而将焦点转移到自己身上则会削弱对方被倾听的期望。然而,聊天机器人避免了这些错误。没有个人经历或解决问题的紧迫感,它们完全专注于说话者。)”可知,人类可以从聊天机器人身上学到避免以自我为中心的回应。故选D项。
15题详解.
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits.

故填more powerful。
故填realization/realisation。
故填who/that。
故填have adopted。
故填an。
end up doing sth.
故填as。
