Then, think about what is more important to you, money or joy (快乐)? There’s no right or wrong answer, so be honest (诚实的)with yourself.

A resolution is a strong decision to do something. Many people make resolutions at the beginning of the New Year. A middle school in Taiyuan surveyed (调查) 100 students about their New Year’s resolutions. Getting better grades, exercising more often, eating more healthily and reading more books are the top four.
The survey also shows that though students make resolutions every year, only less than 8% of them actually succeed. Here are several ways to make it easier for you to keep your resolution.
Set your resolution small.
Setting small goals is much better than trying to make big ones. 35% of New Year’s resolutions fail because they make big goals. For example, if you want to get healthier, it will be easier to start with a bit of daily exercise.

A plan can make it easier for you to make your resolution come true. For example, if you want to take up a sport as a hobby, first decide which sport and how often you’ll play. Then, make a detailed plan and stick to it.
Track (跟踪) your progress.
Some people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions because they don’t track their progress. Write your resolution in a notebook. If your plan is to read, note down how many pages you plan to read weekly and mark the page numbers. This way, you can track your progress closely. This will help you to keep trying hard. Besides, this can make you more confident (自信的). Every time you achieve something, you will probably get a feeling of achievement and that will encourage you to move on.

New Year is a time for resolutions. Most of us will write down a list of “dos” and “don’ts”. We may want to get up early each morning, eat less, find more time to do exercise, be nice to our friends and so on. We all want to improve ourselves, so we try our best to follow the resolutions. Sometimes we are foolish to tell the resolutions to everybody. We hope to obey the resolutions in this way. But it is always difficult for us to keep them, because we don’t have enough time and determination. At last, we have to come back to the bad old days.
Aware (明白) of this, I just wrote down two resolutions this year: do physical exercise every morning and read more in the evening. An all-night party on New Year’s night gave me an excuse. I didn’t follow my resolutions on the first day of the new year. On the second and third days, I obeyed the resolutions. But the daily exercise only lasted a week. And I felt really tired after work. Hey, Captain Lim,
First of all, I would like to say that it is a great pleasure to be able to speak to an experienced pilot who knows what life is like in the sky.
I am a 13-year-old girl and for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a pilot. I would spend hours watching the planes at the airport take off from the runway. I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored (探索) before.
I just love airplanes and flying. The idea to fly people around the world always makes me excited. I’m just not sure if it’s the right job for me. My dad says I need to make a quick decision because now is the right time to start training. It’s true. I want to start early. It sounds funny, but I want to be young and energetic when I’m flying a Qantas Boeing 737, or even an A380!
I have so many questions about it—do you get paid well? I want to have a pretty good income (收入). I want to have a big family and house when I grow up. And it will need a lot of money. Is it fun? Is it safer than being a doctor or a teacher? Will I regret it? I hate regretting things I’ve done. Is it really hard? I’m also a girl, so will I be looked down upon?
And I would also like to know, if I definitely (明确地) want to become a pilot, where and when I should start training if I want to start early.
Thanks so much, Captain!
Regards,
Mary Anne

①Have you ever made New Year’s resolutions before? According to a survey, 27% of the teenagers set themselves one or more New Year’s resolutions at the start of the year, especially in January. Is January the right time to set New Year’s resolutions? (1)
②Some think January is a better time because it’s a fun tradition to discuss New Year’s resolutions with their family and friends at the start of the year. If you all set (A) them at different times, you won’t have the same topic (话题) with others. (2) Besides, the more you put it off, the less possible it is that you’ll decide what you really want to do. By the time you’ve decided, you’ll have less time to achieve your goals.
③However, others have different ideas. They think January is always a cold and dark month when teenagers just want to stay indoors. (3) What’s more, they should make resolutions any time they want. If they wait a bit longer, they’ll have a better idea of what they want to do. One study showed that by the end of January, 20% of the teenagers had failed to stick to their resolutions. So if they are given more time, they won’t get discouraged or give up.
④All in all, whether you make resolutions in January or later, please remember they help to make you a better person and to make your life easier. So just be brave to make and keep them!
阅读短文,根据题目要求完成下列任务。
1.用英文写出文中(A)处划线词them所指代的内容: ____________________
2.在文中(1) (2) (3)处,选出能够填入“Should teenagers wait a little longer before deciding what they want?”的最佳位置: ____________________

4.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the topic?________
A.Uninterested. B.Worried. C.Unsure.

Charles Richard Drew was a brave, important African American doctor. He lived during the first half of the 1900s. This was a very difficult time for black people. But in Drew’s life, nothing could stop him from reaching his dream—to be a doctor.
In high school, Drew was good at sports. He also studied hard and was at the top in his class. After high school, Drew decided to go to college. Few colleges wanted black people at that time, but Drew found one that did. Drew went to Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1922. In that college, Drew did well in sports, but he never forgot his dream of becoming a doctor.
In 1928, he went to the medical school at Canada’s McGill University. Drew studied how to store blood for emergencies (储备血液以备不时之需). Then in 1938, Drew went to Columbia University. He studied blood there and found that plasma (血浆) was easier to store than fresh blood. He also came up with a way that could help people store it for up to a year.
During World War II, wounded soldiers (受伤的士兵) needed blood plasma. Drew started blood banks and quickly found ways to bring plasma to the soldiers. His blood banks saved millions of lives.
Drew was called the “Father of the Blood Bank”. He kept working hard and saving people’s lives. He was really great.
1. What was Drew’s dream?
2. When did Drew go to Amherst College in Massachusetts?
3. Which did Drew think was easier to store, plasma or fresh blood?
4. How many lives did Drew’s blood banks save during World War II?

A.Uninterested. B.Worried. C.Unsure.
5.Do you think January is the right time for New Year’s resolutions? Why or Why not? (Please write in your own words.)
____________________________________________________________ ___________________
【答案】
1.New Year’s resolutions 2.(1) 3.B 4.C
5.Yes, I do. Because they are called New Year’s resolutions, not Half-Year resolutions./Because I will have more time to achieve my goals./ Because I will have the same topic with my friends and family./No, I don’t. Because I will have more time to decide what I want to do./ Because if I have more time, I won’t give up.
【导语】
本文主要谈论了青少年是否应该在一月份制定新年决心,提出了支持和反对在一月份制定新年决心的观点,并最终强调无论何时制定决心,重要的是要勇敢地制定并坚持下去。
1.根据“Some think January is a better time because it’s a fun tradition to discuss New Year’s resolutions with their family and friends at the start of the year. If you all set (A) them at different times, you won’t have the same topic (话题) with others”可知如果你在不同的时间设定新年决心,你就不会和其他人有相同的话题,所以此处them指代的是“新年决心”。故填New Year’s resolutions。
根据“Some think January is a better time”,“However, others have different ideas”以及“All in all, whether you make resolutions in January or later, please remember they help to make you a better person and to make your life easier.”可知作者并没有明确自己是支持还是反对这个观点,只强调了要勇敢地制定并坚持下去。故选C。
5.开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。参考答案为Yes, I do. Because they are called New Year’s resolutions, not Half-Year resolutions./Because I will have more time to achieve my goals./ Because I will have the same topic with my friends and family./No, I don’t. Because I will have more time to decide what I want to do./ Because if I have more time, I won’t give up.
