It’s a sunny afternoon, artist Maria Maea is surrounded by palm fronds (榈叶) growing in the corner of a parking lot. She was using the palm as material for mixed-media sculptures made of wire, dried plants and, often, casts of her family’s faces, which has been a routine of hers for nearly two years.
Stepping into Maea’s backyard feels like being transported into her creative mind: mint grows in cracks of concrete, and a table decorated with seashells, photos and a mirror create a sort of platform, when inspiration is needed. Maea’s greatest inspiration is nature itself. She has an ability to see plant matter’s potential to create new worlds. “Palms are really common, but they are invisible. They’re decorative, but we don’t really see them as plants,” says Maea. The palm inspired her to use this highly abundant (富足的) but often ignored element, and recontextualize it.
Maea taught herself to weave (编织) the palm fronds using a Samoan technique. The repetitive act became a meditation. “I know my parents are from Samoa, but our history has been kind of melted and framed by coming here. Weaving helps my body remember what my mind cannot.”
Eventually, as she prepared for her solo show, Maea brought her family in to help weave. Her aunt explained how in Samoa the weaved palm has a variety of uses: a fork, a plate, a window to keep the rain out. As they weaved, the family cracked jokes, laughed and shared stories.
For Maea, the process is more important than the outcome. By gathering her family and creating art together, they’ve filled memories and emotions into the objects themselves, they’ve bonded in new ways, and they’ve had an opportunity to showcase their creativity.
4. Maria Maea views the palm trees as______
A. useless artistry B. unimportant decoration C. invisible plants D. overlooked inspiration
5. What does the process of weaving palm fronds represent for Maea and her family?
A. A means to compete with other artists in the community.
B. A method to connect with their customs and create memories.
C. A technique to improve their weaving skills for future projects.
D. A way to earn money for her family by selling handmade items.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Maria Maea?
A. Imaginative and reflective. B. Demanding and ambitious.
C. Diligent and generous. D. Determined and humble.
7. What is the passage trying to tell us?
A. Art is merely valuable when it’s created by professional artists.
B. The outcome of art matters more than the process of creating it.
C. Traditional techniques are never outdated and should be passed down.
D. Creativity can be inspired and family’s bonds strengthened through nature.

Imagine virtually walking through a forest, where dinosaurs roamed. You notice a strange-looking fruit labeled“Taste a Stegosaurus’s (剑龙) Favorite Food!” So you grab a small cube (方块) attached to a plastic strip from your pocket, place it in your mouth, and instantly taste a sweet-and-sour tang. This futuristic experience might soon be possible, thanks to a new study published in Science Advances. Actually, the developers of “e-Taste” — a tiny cube measuring 15 millimeters on each side and filled with electric sensors — aim to add taste to the available repertoire (技能) of the virtual senses.
For users, the way e-Taste works is simple. You hold the strip in your mouth, with the cube hanging outside. When the sensors inside the cube detect a virtual food object, e-Taste releases chemicals that simulate five tastes — salty, sour, sweet, bitter, and umami — without requiring you to actually eat anything. Inside the cube are refillable packs of liquid chemicals, combined in different amounts to produce specific tastes.
Taste in virtual reality has been underexplored because “taste is not just taste-it comes with other stuff like smell and texture,” says study co-author Yizhen Jia, an engineer at Ohio State University. While e-Taste cannot yet replicate smell or texture, Jia and his team are working to explore ways to include those elements. “We have a more advanced design in progress,” he says, “and another project addressing smell.” The team is confident in their progress, as e-Taste demonstrates the ability to mimic taste in a tiny, flexible device.
e-Taste represents a significant advance in biomimetics, the field of creating artificial copies of natural systems to solve human problems, says Tae-il Kim, a bioengineer at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea. One important objective of bioengineering is to develop technologies that integrate perfectly with our bodies, Kim explains. For example, e-Taste’s concepts-imitating the tongue’s sensory functions and quantifying (量化) taste chemically, could have medical applications, such as wearable devices for daily health checks. Such devices might stimulate the tongue to detect sensory processing issues in the brain.
While these applications are still speculative, Kim notes that bioengineers aim not only to replicate nature but also to understand how it works. “The goal is to create technology people need, like improving accessibility,” he says. “It’s part of a long-term exploration.”
8. What do we know about e-Taste from the first two paragraphs?
A. Its products have already been launched on the market
B. It can capture food’s smell and release it in the mouth.
C. It produces tastes by mixing chemicals from the cube.
D. It involves complicated and non-user-friendly procedures.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The challenges of replicating smell and texture in virtual reality.
B. The barriers and ongoing efforts in the development of e-Taste.
C. The function of multi-senses in virtual reality experiences.
D. The role of engineers in advancing virtual reality technology.
10. What does the underlined word “biomimetics” in paragragh 4 probably mean?
A. The scientific study of the normal functions of all living things.
B. The branch of dealing with large databases of biochemical information.
C. The field of generating artificial mechanisms which mimic natural ones.
D. The recreation of existing natural biological systems for useful purposes.
11. What can be inferred about the future of e-Taste?
A. It has potential applications in medical fields.
B. It will be mainly used for entertainment purposes.
C. It will replace traditional methods of tasting food.
D. It can be accessible in a not-too-distant future.

Mapping explorers of Wikipedia (维基百科) rabbit holes has revealed three different styles of human curiosity: the “busybody”, the “hunter”, and the “dancer”.
Wikipedia, as the world’s largest online encyclopedia, is now helping social scientists, in their study, deepen the definition of curiosity by tracing how searchers move among topics and lose themselves in these Wiki rabbit holes.
In Wikipedia, a busybody traces a winding route through many often distantly related topics. A hunter, in contrast, searches with sustained focus, moving among a relatively small number of closely related articles. A dancer links together highly distinct topics to try to combine into new ideas. “Curiosity actually works by connecting pieces of information... to stuff that we already know,” says University of Pennsylvania network scientist Dani Bassett.
The team tracked more than 482,000 people using Wikipedia’s mobile app in 50 countries or territories and 14 languages, and charted these users’ paths using “knowledge networks” of connected information, which present how closely one search topic is related to another. Beyond just mapping the connections, they linked curiosity styles to indicators of well-being, inequality, and other measures.
In countries with higher education levels and greater gender equality, people browsed (浏览) more like busybodies. In countries with lower scores on these variables, people browsed like hunters. Bassett assumes that in countries with less equality, there may be a restriction of knowledge production that pushes people more toward this intense focus. Dancer patterns, more recently confirmed, were excluded.
Princeton University psychologist Erik Nook praised the study for its “astonishingly broad” range. The team, he says, brought together specialized knowledge from a range of fields to reveal a host of insights into human behavior.
The seeds of this work were actually planted in 2016 when Bassett and Perry Zurn, a professor of philosophy, noticed that creativity was well-studied, but curiosity, its necessary condition, was not. After extensively studying 2,000 years of Western literature, Zurn identified various curiosity styles, including the three mentioned. Wikipedia then served as a real-world test bed to confirm this classification.
12. What is the purpose of the study by social scientists?
A. To better understand curiosity.
B. To find different curiosity styles.
C. To promote Wikipedia’s mobile app.
D. To analyse the education differences.
13. How may a “hunter” search on Wikipedia?
A. From “cat” to “coffee” to “cat cafe”.
B. From “cat” to “cat diet” to “cat sleep”.
C. From “cat” to “chemicals” to “universe”.
D. From “cat” to “Egyptian cat” to “ancient Egypt”.
14. What kind of people act more like busybodies?
A. People with better education.
B. People with greater happiness.
C. People from less equal society.
D. People from less developed nations.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. A new research method.
B. The origin of the research.
C. Previous research findings.
D. Limitations of prior research.

___19___
Sit and focus on the present, allowing your thoughts to drift in and out of your mind. The boys in the block were going to have a roller-skating (滑旱冰) race next Saturday. They were divided into two teams: the Sunnysiders and the Shadysiders, with five boys on each team. Andy was on the Sunnysiders. They lost last year, so they were desperate to win this time. But Andy knew his short legs made it hard for him to skate fast.
One day, Andy was greeted by a pleasant “Hello” as he was putting on his roller-skates. He looked up and saw his new neighbor, Francis. “Hello! ” he replied cheerfully, noticing his neighbor’s long legs. “Wanna skate with me? Look at your long legs! Just the right kind to make you a good skater.” “I’d love to. You know, I’m really good at roller skating and I used to help my team win.” Francis said, his tone now heavy with sadness. “But I lost my roller skates and my mom just cannot afford to buy me another pair.”
Andy thought it was a shame for Francis. As a new comer, there were undoubtedly many moments when he must have felt lonely. Andy thought to himself, wondering what he could do for Francis. But he had to say goodbye in a hurry since the team were meeting in the open space on the corner to talk over some plans.
When talking to the team captain, Andy suggested adding another boy to their team, Francis. But the captain said “No” as the team knew nothing about him. Besides, the Shadysiders wouldn’t let them take on an extra player.
In the following days, Andy practiced very hard with his team. Then came the day before the race when he saw Francis on the sidewalk, watching them skate past, his eyes filled with a sense of loss. Somehow it upset Andy, and his desire to help his new neighbor resurfaced. Then he thought of a way that could not only help his team win, but help Francis fit in.

The palm inspired her to use this highly abundant (富足) but often ignored element, and recontextualize it.

A From “cat” to “coffee” to “cat cafe”.

Li Hua
【答案】Dear David,
How’s it going? I’m writing to share a hot educational reform in China — high schools now implement a double day off on weekends. Previously, most students were trapped in the rat race, attending extra classes even on weekends to keep up academically.
This reform eases our heavy study pressure, allowing us to rest fully or pursue hobbies like sports and art. But some fear it cuts study time and widens the academic gap between students with different self-discipline. Personally, I think it’s a great step toward balanced education despite minor drawbacks.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】He rushed to Francis, excited to tell him his plan. “Francis, you can use my skates in the race tomorrow! ” Andy yelled, eyes shining with hope. Francis hesitated. Noticing that, Andy explained that having him on their team would not only boost their chances of winning but also help him make more friends. Eventually, Francis put on the roller-skates and skated around, his talent instantly impressing the captain who was nearby. Struck by Francis’ excellent skills, the captain agreed to include the new boy. At that moment, Andy felt a touch of emptiness for giving up his own chance, but a surge of excitement for the plan as well.
The next day, the race began as scheduled. Francis, wearing Andy’s skates, stood at the starting line, looking determined, while Andy, from the sidelines, felt a mix of anticipation and nervousness. The race was intense, but Francis’ excellent skating skills helped the Sunnysiders finally win the race. Once the race was finished, Francis, now part of the team, skated over to Andy with the others. Together, they lifted Andy onto their shoulders, celebrating not just the victory but also the newfound friendships. Cheers filled the air, and Andy experienced a swell of pride and a profound sense of accomplishment for the success of his friend and the team.
