I’m Jane Bernhard. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and continued my work in acting through my 20s. My career was my life. I spent countless 14-hour days in rehearsals, performed eight shows a week and shot audition tapes during any break I could get. All this forced me to miss trips and classes, and I was constantly advised not to take any vacation.
One day I slowed down and reexamined my path in life. Was I just too afraid to let go of something I’d poured my heart into for over a decade? The answer was that the most meaningful parts of my life were the ones spent with the people I loved — not on a stage or screen. That led to a shift in direction — a career path that would allow me more freedom to spend time with my friends and family.
So I arrived at Columbia Business School to pursue my MBA, with the intention of building a career in consulting which could give me breathing room. But the world I was entering felt all familiar. My peers were working all hours, day and night. I was offered opportunities and considered for roles that I later found out required consistent late-night calls. Upon turning them down, I was told that ending work before midnight was lazy, which was disheartening. Conventional consulting didn’t work for me, but I realized having my own consulting business would do — so I started one.
Through independent study at Columbia, I interviewed many business leaders and recent graduates to learn about different career paths. Interestingly enough, many executives shared that the advice they would give their younger selves was not to spend so much time at the office. At the time, the work meetings felt urgent and important, but looking back, they wished they had gone to their kids’ sports games. I taped their insights to my wall, as a reminder that at the end of the day, what matters is how you have lived, not how you have worked.

A. Her classes seemed less important.
B. Her work affected her personal life.
C. Her achievements were hard to list.
D. Her professional life was very satisfying.
5 Why did the author give up seeking a career in conventional consulting?
A. Because her peers were unfriendly toward her.
B. Because the job required a high level of technical skill.
C. Because there were few opportunities for advancement.
D. Because the demanding work hours were unsustainable.
6. Which of the following practices would the author most likely approve of?
A. Interview as many business leaders as we can.
B. Bury ourselves in work to create a meaningful life.
C. Encourage our kids to take part in more sports games.
D. Prioritize meaningful life experiences over excessive work.
7. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Work-life Balance: My Life Choice
B. Traditional Consulting: Pros and Cons
C. Columbia MBA: My path to a New Career
D. From Acting to Consulting: My Career Shift
B 5. D 6. D 7. A

Have you ever made a resolution to “study harder”, only to fall back into old habits within a week? John Whitmore’s Coaching for Performance provides the solution — the GROW model. This simple yet powerful framework (框架) stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will. It transforms fuzzy goals into concrete results by guiding you through each step of the process with clearer wishes.
Imagine a student transforming “I need better grades” into “I’ll raise my algebra score from 72 to 85 by doing three extra practice problems daily.” This Goal-setting step creates measurable targets, just like an athlete aiming to cut two seconds off their time. The power of GROW emerges when we honestly face Reality — that same student might admit wasting 90 minutes on social media, while the athlete recognizes poor pacing. These self-assessments, achieved through guided reflection rather than criticism, reveal the true roadblocks to progress.
The Options phase shines as people create their own solutions. A nervous speaker might record speeches or join drama club — self-chosen strategies work best, far more effective than imposed advice. This leads naturally to the Will stage, where commitment turns plans into action. Our algebra student might schedule Sunday study sessions, while the runner commits to daily training. Such personalized plans generate real results —15% grade improvements or personal bests — because the drive comes from within, not from external pressure.
Whitmore’s revolutionary insight redefines effective coaching: it’s not about providing answers but about asking the right questions. This principle forms the foundation of the GROW model, which succeeds because it agrees with how human motivation actually works.
What makes coaching for Performance so valuable is that it offers a structured yet flexible system. The GROW framework provides clear guidance while allowing for personal adaptation — a balance that explains its effectiveness. At its core, Whitmore’s message is empowering: every individual already possesses the capacity for change. The GROW model simply provides the tools— strategic questioning, honest self-reflection, and actionable steps — to help people realize this potential.
8. What does the underlined word “fuzzy” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A. Ambiguous. B. Impractical. C. Irrelevant. D. Comprehensive.
9. What issue does the athlete identify in the “Reality” phase?
A. His self-assessments are unrealistic.
B. His training facilities are ineffective.
C. He struggles to regulate his speed properly.
D. He fails to get professional training guidance.
10. Why does the author mention the nervous speaker in paragraph 3?
A. To highlight the role of external pressure.
B. To criticize traditional public speaking training.
C. To demonstrate the significance of professional advice.
D. To reveal how self-chosen strategies enhance commitment.
11. What is the author’s opinion of Whitmore’s book?
A. It simplifies complex goal-setting. B. It emphasizes the external motivation.
C. It is applicable to various challenges. D. It is instrumental to choose careers.
A 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“It transforms fuzzy goals into concrete results by guiding you through each step of the process with clearer wishes. (GROW模型通过更清晰的意愿引导你完成过程的每一步,将fuzzy目标转化为具体的结果)”可推知,fuzzy与“concrete (具体的)”意思相反,意为“不明确的,模糊的”,与“Ambiguous (模棱两可的)”意思相近。故选A。
根据第二段“The power of GROW emerges when we honestly face Reality — that same student might admit wasting 90 minutes on social media, while the athlete recognizes poor pacing. (当我们诚实地面对Reality时,GROW的力量就会显现出来,同一个学生可能会承认在社交媒体上浪费了90分钟,而运动员会意识到自己节奏控制不好)”可知,在Reality阶段,运动员难以恰当控制速度。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The Options phase shines as people create their own solutions. A nervous speaker might record speeches or join drama club — self-chosen strategies work best, far more effective than imposed advice. (当人们创造自己的解决方案时,Options阶段闪耀着光芒。一个紧张的演讲者可能会录制演讲或加入戏剧俱乐部,自己选择的策略效果最好,比强加的建议要有效得多)”可推知,作者提到紧张的演讲者是为了揭示自主选择的策略如何增强行动力。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“What makes coaching for Performance so valuable is that it offers a structured yet flexible system. The GROW framework provides clear guidance while allowing for personal adaptation — a balance that explains its effectiveness. At its core, Whitmore’s message is empowering: every individual already possesses the capacity for change. The GROW model simply provides the tools — strategic questioning, honest self-reflection, and actionable steps — to help people realize this potential.(《Coaching for Performance》之所以如此有价值,是因为它提供了一个结构化但灵活的系统。GROW框架提供了明确的指导,同时允许个人适应,这种平衡解释了其有效性。惠特莫尔的核心思想是赋予权力:每个人都拥有改变的能力。GROW模型只是提供了一些工具,战略性提问、诚实的自我反思和可操作的步骤,来帮助人们实现这种潜力)”可知,作者认为《Coaching for Performance》这本书提供了一个有结构但又灵活的系统并允许个人调整。由此推知,作者认为这本书适用于各种挑战。故选C。

To determine the type and severity of a cancer, scientists usually analyze thin slices of a tumor (肿瘤) under a microscope. But to tell how the tumor is treated, scientists must perform genetic sequencing (排序) of the RNA isolated from the tumor, a process that can take weeks and costs thousands of dollars.
But now, Stanford Medicine researchers have developed an artificial intelligence-powered computational program that can predict the activity of thousands of genes within tumor cells. The tool was created using data from more than 7,000 diverse tumor samples. The team showed that it could be used routinely to predict genetic variations in breast cancers and to predict patient outcomes.
“This kind of software could be used to quickly identify gene signatures in patients’ tumors, speeding up clinical (临床的) decision-making and saving the health care system thousands of dollars,” said Olivier Gevaert, PhD.
The researchers began with 7,584 cancer biopsies (活检) from 16 different cancer types. Each biopsy had been sliced into thin sections and prepared. After the researchers integrated their new cancer biopsies as well as other datasets, including images from thousands of healthy cells, the AI program — which they named SEQUOIA — was able to predict the expression patterns of more than 15,000 different genes from the stained images.
To test the effect of SEQUOIA for clinical decision-making, Gevaert and his colleagues identified breast cancer genes that the model could accurately predict the expression of and that are already used in commercial breast cancer genomic tests.
The AI model can’t yet be used in a clinical setting, but Gevaert said his team is studying its prospective applications. In the future, he said, SEQUOIA could reduce the need for expensive gene expression tests. “We’ve shown how useful this could be for breast cancer, and we can now use it for all cancers,” he said, “It’s a whole new source of data that we didn’t have before.”
12. How do scientists typically determine the treatment of a tumor?
A. By analyzing its thin slices.
B. By conducting genetic sequencing.
C. By applying a computational program.
D. By referring to routinely collected data.
13. What can be inferred about the datasets used to develop SEQUOIA?
A. They excluded images of healthy cells.
B. They included various types of cancer biopsies.
C. They mainly consisted of breast cancer samples.
D. They were collected after the AI program was built.
14. What did Gevaert think of the future of the AI model?
A. Objective. B. Useless. C. Changeable. D. Potential.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A new tool for analyzing tumor slices.
B. An AI tool to predict tumor gene activity.
C. An attempt to conduct original genetic sequencing.
D. AI technology to transform the treatment of cancer.
B 13. B 14. D 15. B

When a friend, partner, family member or co-worker is upset, you’ve probably wondered how best to make them feel better. Let them vent? Offer a chocolate bar? Give them space so they can have a good cry? ____16____ But one of the most powerful ways to relieve a person’s feelings is to start a conversation.
Confirm their emotions.
One consistent finding from the research is that telling people they shouldn’t feel so bad typically makes them feel worse. This kind of strategy sends the message that they’re overreacting, which, absurdly, only makes them more emotional. ____17____ Comments like, “I can imagine that was difficult” are more comforting than other kinds of feedback that try to help a person change their thinking about the problem.
Help them strategize if they’re open to it.
While phrases of support can make people feel better, not everyone is open to such an approach, because it can feel ineffective. ____18____ If they focus on their emotions by saying something like “I feel like they don’t care about me” they are probably only looking for support. If, on the other hand, they say that they wish they felt differently, or that they want to know how to solve a problem, then they are inviting you to help them.
If they welcome problem solving, frame it carefully.
If you think the other person is open to letting you help them strategize, tell them that you understand why they feel the way they do, or that you would have reacted similarly. Then, ease into a problem-solving strategy. ____19____ This involves helping people understand that while things may be bad now, they’ll likely improve over time.
Remember that it’s the thought that counts.
People appreciated support even if it wasn’t exactly aligned with their needs. In other words, what matters most is not that you say the right thing, but that you are present and try to help. We can make a difference to other people with relatively little effort. ____20____
A. Support is the correct way.
B. So first, listen to how they discuss their situation.
C. Sometimes just being there is all that you need to do.
D. The ideal approach depends on specific circumstances.
E. Temporal distancing means a period of time in between.
F. An approach known as“temporal distancing”works best.
G. You need to push them to forget the upsetting problem first.
D 17. A 18. B 19. F 20. C
上文“When a friend, partner, family member or co-worker is upset, you’ve probably wondered how best to make them feel better. Let them vent? Offer a chocolate bar? Give them space so they can have a good cry? (当朋友、伴侣、家人或同事感到难过时,你可能想知道如何才能最好地让他们感觉好起来。让他们倾诉?递上一块巧克力?给他们空间让他们好好哭一场?)”提出了安慰难过之人的问题并列举多种常见做法,下文“But one of the most powerful ways to relieve a person’s feelings is to start a conversation. (但缓解他人情绪最有效的方法之一是开启对话。)”通过转折引出核心方法。D项“理想的方法取决于具体情况。”承上启下,既回应了上文多种做法并存的现象,说明安慰方式需结合实际,又自然过渡到下文的核心方法,逻辑连贯。故选D。
【17题详解】
上文“One consistent finding from the research is that telling people they shouldn’t feel so bad typically makes them feel worse. This kind of strategy sends the message that they’re overreacting, which, absurdly, only makes them more emotional. (研究中一个一致的发现是,告诉人们他们不应该这么难过通常会让他们感觉更糟。这种做法会传递出他们反应过度的信号,荒谬的是,这反而会让他们情绪更激动。)”明确了不当安慰方式的弊端,下文“Comments like, “I can imagine that was difficult” are more comforting than other kinds of feedback that try to help a person change their thinking about the problem. (像“我能想象那一定很难”这样的话,比其他试图帮助对方改变对问题看法的回应更令人感到安慰。)”给出了恰当的安慰表述。A项“支持才是正确的方式。”作为过渡句,既否定了上文“让对方不要难过”的不当方式,又引出下文具有支持性的正确安慰方式,“支持”与下文的安慰话语高度契合。故选A。
上文“While phrases of support can make people feel better, not everyone is open to such an approach, because it can feel ineffective. (虽然支持性的话语能让人们感觉好一些,但并非所有人都接受这种方式,因为它可能会显得无效。)”说明安慰需根据对方接受度调整,下文“If they focus on their emotions by saying something like “I feel like they don’t care about me” they are probably only looking for support. If, on the other hand, they say that they wish they felt differently, or that they want to know how to solve a problem, then they are inviting you to help them.
上文“If you think the other person is open to letting you help them strategize, tell them that you understand why they feel the way they do, or that you would have reacted similarly. Then, ease into a problem-solving strategy. (如果你认为对方愿意让你帮他们制定策略,告诉他们你理解他们的感受,或者你也会有类似的反应。然后,逐步引入解决问题的策略。)”提出要逐步构建解决策略,下文“This involves helping people understand that while things may be bad now, they’ll likely improve over time. (这包括帮助人们理解,虽然现在情况可能很糟糕,但随着时间的推移,情况可能会好转。)”解释了该策略的具体内涵。F项“一种被称为‘时间距离法’的方法效果最好。”承接上文的策略构建,明确了具体的有效策略名称,选项中“temporal distancing”与下文“likely improve over time”的表述精准对应。故选F。
【20题详解】
上文“People appreciated support even if it wasn’t exactly aligned with their needs. In other words, what matters most is not that you say the right thing, but that you are present and try to help. We can make a difference to other people with relatively little effort.

Grandpa Miller and six-year-old Timmy were always busy at their shared workbench. Under Grandpa’s gentle guidance, Timmy carefully polished a small wooden dog that they had made together for a long time, proud to be learning “real work” from Grandpa.
Their joy also spread around the big dinner table. Timmy kept talking to Grandpa. “Will the dog stand firmly, Grandpa?” “Sure! I sanded it SUPER smooth!” Grandpa responded gently.
Across the table sat Timmy’s father, Ben. He bent over his laptop, his eyebrows frowned (皱)。The joy of the grandfather and grandson seemed to escape him. “Quarterly reports are due tomorrow,” he replied to his wife Sarah absent-mindedly, who had just reminded him of the delicious potatoes. He grabbed a bite, his eyes sliding back to the laptop, blind to the warmth around him. When he reached for the bowl, intending to take a quick sip (抿), his arm knocked it over. Some hot soup spilled (洒) onto the table.
“Be careful!” Sarah said softly. She grabbed a cloth and started to clean the spill quickly. Ben was wiping his laptop when some soup spilled on his trousers. “Oh, annoying! The harder I try to get this done quickly, the more things go wrong!” said he, getting angry. Astonished, little Timmy stopped talking at once. He stared at his father quietly, not knowing what to do.
Grandpa Miller watched what happened calmly and then spoke in his low voice - the same familiar tone that used to comfort Ben when he was small. “Easy there, son,” he said firmly, “The soup deserves your whole heart, so does the moment with all of us.”

After the dinner, Ben sat in front of the laptop again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing the words, Ben froze. His fingers paused mid-air above the laptop keyboard, and the irritation on his face faded slowly. Memories flooded in—when he was Timmy’s age, Grandpa had said the same thing while teaching him to carve a wooden cart, reminding him to focus on the moment. Glancing up, he saw Timmy clutching the small wooden dog tightly, eyes wide with hesitation, and Sarah folding the soiled cloth quietly. “I’m sorry,” Ben said softly, closing the laptop. “I let work take over and missed this.” Timmy’s face lit up; he held out the wooden dog, and it stood steadily on the table. Grandpa smiled, pouring Ben a new bowl of soup.
After the dinner, Ben sat in front of the laptop again. But this time, his brows weren’t furrowed. The lingering warmth of the dinner calmed his restlessness. He typed steadily, and the quarterly report, which had felt like a burden, flowed smoothly. When he finished, he walked to the workbench. Timmy and Grandpa were polishing the wooden dog together. “Mind if I join?” Ben asked. Timmy handed him a piece of sandpaper, and Grandpa patted his arm. By the lamp’s glow, the three of them worked quietly, the gentle scraping of sandpaper the only sound in the peaceful room—this “real work” of togetherness was far more precious than any report.

We bring stories of adventure, world cultures and wild places to life in exhibitions and experiences that are designed to be shared with audiences of all ages.
Bring National Geographic (NG) to your venue
We offer high-quality traveling exhibitions to meet the needs of venues both small and large. Working with photographers, explorers, and other cooperators, we create exhibitions covering a wide range of topics to appeal to multiple audiences. To start the process, select your region to find exhibits available for booking.
For venues in the continental United States, a printed and packed exhibition will be shipped to your location, ready to hang.
For venues located outside of the United States, NG offers digitally delivered content packages. This option avoids international shipping fees by providing partners with a secure link to download their exhibition files and production guidelines for printing and mounting the exhibition.
How to Host or Book
Fill out the hosting form on any exhibition page. Or email us at exhibitions@ngs.org. A member of our traveling exhibitions team will respond within five business days.
An NG representative will:
●Discuss your venue’s interest, outline fees and logistics (物流).
●Walk you through the process of selecting the right exhibition to meet your programmatic goals and space.

B

D. Her professional life was very satisfying.

A. Because her peers were unfriendly toward her.
B. Because the job required a high level of technical skill.
C. Because there were few opportunities for advancement.
D. Because the demanding work hours were unsustainable.

When a friend partner, family member or co-worker is upset, you’ve probably wondered how best to make them feel better.
