When Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan performs, the audience aren't just
hearing the beautiful sounds from his violin, they are hearing the sound of possibility.
Anantawan was born without a right hand and most of his right forearm,a disability
that could have been a major obstacle to his becoming a musician, but this has not
stopped him from following his dreams.
His family, especially his Chinese grandmother, encouraged him and saw him as a
complete person who only needed some adaptations. This was the encouragement that
Anantawan needed to get where he is today.
He went from being refused by music teachers who could not think out-of-the-box to
studying with giants, like Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. But it did not happen
overnight.
After a lot of rejections,he finally found a teacher,Peggy Hills, and he learned to
play with his left hand. But holding the bow was still an obstacle until a special adaption-
a device that straps unto the then ten-year-old right arm that holds the bow-was made for
him at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto.
"A lot of times,we let fear get in the way of trying anything,"said Anantawan,
"For me,my story has always been a result of just trying something, being okay with
failure, and then just seeing what the results are.In my case,it's really just beautiful,
expressive music.”
Now,Anantawan is working to provide inclusion for others. As an associate professor
at the Berklee College of Music,he founded the Music Inclusion Ensemble,a group of
students with varying disabilities.
His goal is to ensure that people who have challenges feel like they have choices in
finding ways to express themselves, like he did through music.

Traditionally, dining out has been seen as a social activity, and eating alone may
strike many as strange. However,in recent years, the shame around eating alone has

According to OpenTable,a restaurant reservation platform, solo dining reservations
in the US have gone up by 29 percent over the last two years. In Germany, they've risen
by 18 percent this year and in the UK by 14 percent.
The rise of solo dining comes from several factors, including the growth of single
households and the desire for more "me time".OpenTable CEO Debby Soo told AP that
solo dining ties into a broader movement of self-love and enjoying one's own company.

A recent study published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Enironmental
Epidemiology explores the widespread human exposure to food contact chemicals
FCCs).The research identifies which chemicals used in food packaging and other
materials that come into contact with food have been detected in human samples,
including urine,blood,and breast milk.
In a systematic approach, the authors compared over 14,000 known FCCs with data
from five human biomonitoring programs,three metabolome/exposome databases,and
scientific literature. This revealed evidence of 3,601 FCCs present in humans,
representing 25%of the known FCCs.
Dr.Birgit Geueke, first author of the study, emphasizes the importance of this work:
"Our research establishes a link between food contact chemicals, exposure, and human
health. It also highlights those chemicals that have been overlooked in biomonitoring
studies so far.And it offers an important opportunity for prevention and protection of
health.”
Dr.Jane Muncke, senior author, expresses concern over this widespread exposure:
"This work highlights the fact that food contact materials are not fully safe, even though
they may follow regulations, because they transfer known dangerous chemicals into
people. We would like this new evidence base to be used for improving the safety of food
contact materials-both in terms of regulations but also in the development of safer
alternatives.”
In addition to this, the study pointed out that many chemicals'potential risks have
not been sufficiently investigated. While food packaging is not the only source of
exposure, the data from this study will improve the understanding of how food contact
materials contribute to human exposure. It is likely that the actual number of FCCs
present in humans is higher than currently detected because only a subset of FCCs was
investigated in detail.

simpler food contact materials.
These results aim to help researchers focus on important gaps in our knowledge
about human exposure to FCCs and better understand the health effects of these
chemicals.

On the platform, two men were fighting. Then the unthinkable happened:The pair
fell over the edge and onto the tracks. One man ended up on his back, trying to protect
himself from hits.Suddenly,he started jerking and shaking. The attacker jumped back,
bounded back up onto the platform, and disappeared.
The man had fallen onto the third rail, the source for the 600 volts (of
electricity that powered Chicago's L trains. As Perry and other horrified onlookers
watched,he twitched badly as the current (surged through his body, his head
bouncing up and down off the tracks.
“Help him!”a woman wailed.“Please,someone!”
装
Perry couldn't just stand there and watch. He sat at the edge of the platform and
eased himself down.Assuming that every rail between him and the man was live with
electricity,Perry took a few quick jumps,high-kneeing it as he'd done in high school
football, until he was standing over the victim.
The guy looked dead, his body still moving in a rhythmic way as the electricity
flowed, his head banging against a steel rail.Perry wondered how he was going to escape
the situation he'd just put himself into-standing over the dangerous rail, about to touch a
body full of electricity. The train he'd just gotten off was stopped, thankfully. But had the
conductor seen him?Would it start up again?
