It seems logical enough that bad weather can sometimes cause birds to lose their
sense of direction during their annual migrations().But why, even when weather is
not a major factor,do birds travel far away from their usual routes?
A new paper by UCLA ecologists explores one reason:disturbances to Earth's magnetic
field(f磁场)can lead birds to be lost-一a phenomenon scientists call“vagrancy'一even in
perfect weather.
With North America's bird populations declining, assessing the causes of vagrancy
could help scientists better understand the dangers birds face and the ways they adapt to
the challenges. For example, birds that wind up in unfamiliar places are likely to face the
challenges of finding food and habitats that suit them and may die as a result. But it also
could be beneficial for birds whose traditional homes are becoming uninhabitable due to
climate change,by "accidentally"introducing the animals into geographic regions that
are now better suited for them.
Decades'worth of lab research suggests that birds can sense magnetic fields using
magneto receptors()in their eyes.In the study;researchers compared data from
2.2 million birds, representing 152 species, which had been captured and set free
between 1960 and 2019-part of a United States Geological Survey tracking program-
with historic records of geomagnetic disturbances and solar activity.
While other factors, such as weather, likely play a big role in causing vagrancy,
the researchers found a strong link between birds that were found far outside of their
expected range and the geomagnetic disturbances that occurred during fall migrations.
The researchers had expected that geomagnetic disturbances associated with heightened
solar activity would be associated with the most vagrancy, but this was not the case.
Radiofrequency activity generated by solar disturbances could make birds'magneto
receptors unusable, leaving birds to sense direction by other clues."Surprisingly, birds

migrating during the day were generally more affected by solar activity. It may act as a
driver of vagrancy in some daytime migrants, but it may lessen vagrancy for species
migrating at night,"Tonelli said.
Although the researchers only studied birds, their methods and findings could help
scientists understand why other migratory species become disoriented far from their usual
places.
24.What is vagrancy in the context of bird migration?
A.Birds flying off the expected course.
B.Birds traveling in larger groups than usual.
C.Birds'migration beginning earlier year by year.
装
D.Birds'migrating routes varying with the weather.
25.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 3?
A.To find ways to help birds face challenges in new habitats
B.To study the effects of climate change on bird populations.
C.To analyze the necessity of exploring new habitats for birds.
D.To stress the significance of assessing the causes of vagrancy.
2
26.How did the researchers carry out their study on bird migration?
A.By referring to previous data.
B.By performing a tracking procedure.
C.By studying the magneto receptors of birds.
D.By observing birds as they migrated across different places.
27.Which of the following might surprise the researchers?
A.Birds depend on a variety of ways to sense direction.
B.Night-migrating birds may experience little vagrancy.
C.The role of weather outperforms that of geomagnetic disturbances.
D.The increased solar activity results in the greatest amount of vagrancy.

We've seen it used numerous times, from the cover of distinguished publications to O
speeches by Fortune 500 CEOs and world leaders:"Data is the new oil."But the
analogy()should stop there.Treating data like oil has led some governments to
store data in silos locked behind borders.
Douglas Hofstadter,a famous philosopher, notes that this commonly-heard analogy
belongs to those on which nonspecialists tend to base their understandings of scientific
concepts.Such analogies are probably easy to remember but in a certain context they can

lead to absurd conclusions or complete dead ends.Hofstadter remarked "They're like
skiers who sail with grace down well-tended ski runs but are completely lost in powder."
There is a fixed amount of oil on our planet to be extracted ()Unlike oil,

increasing amounts of data are being generated at a pace that's hard to fathom:in the next
two years,40 zettabytes of data will be created-an amount so large that there is no
useful approach to demonstrating its size and scope.
姓
名
The value of oil comes from its rareness, insufficiency and the difficulty of
extracting it.However, data is something quite different. For example, data is both
created and used by autonomous vehicles interacting with connected infrastructure(
in a smart city.In San Francisco, there are 470,000 registered cars not
including buses, motorcycles,or other commercial vehicles). If just 25%of those cars
were autonomous, the amount of data produced yearly would be the same as about
300,000,000 Internet users.Imagine what'll happen if that is scaled to an entire
country.
Oil is also a single-use resource, while data can be reused and shared for new
purposes and insights.Recently, data from a clinical trial of drugs commonly used to treat
heart disease was reused, leading to the discovery of a second use for the medicine:
destroying a protein associated with nearly half of all cancers. In comparison, adding more

oil doesn't result in getting better quality oil.
So the next time you hear someone say this analogy, ask them when the Earth will
have no more data to extract and see if you can get an answer.
28.What's Hofstadter's attitude to the classic analogy?
A.Favorable.
B.Prejudiced.
C.Negative.
D.Unconcerned.
29.What does the underlined word "fathom"in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Recover.
B.Quicken.
C.Replace.
D.Comprehend.
30.Why does the author take San Francisco as an example?
A.To reveal it's in great demand of updated data.
B.To demonstrate it has busy public transportation.
C.To show it alone generates endless amounts of data.
D.To indicate it employs a good many autonomous cars.
31.How is the value of data mainly reflected according to Paragraph 5?
A.It helps prevent some cancers.
B.It promotes scientific innovations and advances.
C.It motivates healthy competition in the drug market.
D.It makes medical treatment accessible to common people.

Type in a command like "a chocolate bar riding a bicycle in the style of Picasso",
and the artificial intelligence tools like DALL-E,Midjourney and Stable Diffission will
produce it for you in seconds.Their main work is to adopt elements from the vast libraries
of digitally available images and artwork from across the Internet that they have been
trained on and complete the artwork at your command.
In January this year,Getty Images announced that it has started lawsuits (
against Stability AI,the maker of Stable Diffusion.Getty states that the company has
copied millions of its images and"chosen to ignore workable licensing choices and long-
standing legal protection in seeking their stand-alone commercial interests".
Stability AI was also charged as a defendant (in a class action lawsuit by
three visual artists on behalf of the visual arts community. They said that AI image
generators "break the rights of millions of artists",also naming Midjourney and
DeviantArt,an online gallery that has developed its own AI tool,as defendants.
In response to the artists'lawsuit,a spokesperson for Stability AI said "the
company takes these matters seriously",and that "anyone that believes that this isn't
fair use doesn't understand the technology and misunderstands the law".Midjoumey
CEO David Holz compared the process behind his image-generating service to the
process behind human creativity, which often involves drawing inspiration from other
artists.
"Can a person look at somebody else's picture and learn from it and make a similar
picture?"Holz said."Obviously,it's allowed in people and if it wasn't,then it would

destroy the whole professional art industry. To the extent that AIs are learning like
people,it's sort of the same thing and if the images come out differently then it seems
like it's fine.”
The art world has reacted differently to the increasing popularity of AI art tools
during the past year. While some say these tools can produce remarkable visuals in styles
from aged photographs and watercolors to pencil drawings-both the quality and speed of
creation are improved compared to the average human performance,it's important to
consider the problems arising from them.As technology continues to advance rapidly,
discussions around these issues are likely to continue and require ongoing attention.
32.What's the main function of DALL-E,Midjourney and Stable Diffusion?
A.Polishing artwork for artists.
B.Training people to identify artwork.
C.Sorting out people's favorite artwork.
D.Creating images based on requirements.
33.What is the heart of the two lawsuits mentioned in the text?
A.The copyright issues.
B.The financial damages.
C.The legal status of online galleries.
D.The potential risks of using digital images.
34.Which of the following does David Holz probably agree with?
A.Artists should have a better understanding of the law.
B.Artists'learning from each other will ruin the industry.
C.The public should have more knowledge of AI technology.
D.AI should be allowed to draw inspiration from human artists.
35.Which aspect of AI tools does the text mainly focus on?
A.The profits they have brought.
B.The concerns they have caused.
C.Their advantages and drawbacks.
D.Their application in the art industry.

I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head.I opened
the front door and nearly stepped on her:a small black cat, just like a meatball."Hi,

Paragraph 1:
Jordan nodded,"I let her out last night."My mouth
dropped open."She was outside all night?"I was so
furious,“It was freezing and she could die!”Jordan
choked back his words, stunned.I grabbed my coat and
rushed outside.Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes.
Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and
curling into a tiny ball.I picked her up,unsure whether she
was alive or dead.Jordan was scared,"We need a vet!
NowI”
As I drove to the animal hospital,Jordan sat in the
back, holding Meatball inside his coat.I could hear him
talking to the cat and apologizing repeatedly.Luckily, the
vet saved Meatball.Seeing her eyes open,Jordan stroked
her head, with tears in his eyes. Then, surprisingly,he
turned to me.He apologized for what he had done."I know
you just want to keep me safe,"he murmured.I felt a lump
in my throat. He rubbed Meatball's back and said,"We are
both going to observe the curfew. It's for our own good."

coat.”
Jordan
Jordan
