Every day, he travels 17 kilometers to accompany his wife of 63 years who now lives in a hospice (养老院) in Apeldoorn. While on days when the weather is very bad, he takes a cab or is driven then by his children, most times he gets on his bike and crosses the city on his own. It takes him an hour to get there and an hour to cycle back home.
In the colder months, Burkhardt keeps himself warm with a blue ski suit with a body warmer on top and a white cap to keep his head warm. “I’ve done skiing with pleasure. Cold doesn’t bother me and with rain, you can put on a rain jacket,” he told an interviewer. “So I’ll always get to my wife.” Burkhardt knows the route by heart, as he has been traveling to his wife’s hospice for the past seven years.
Even if he wanted to drive, Burkhardt’s license wasn’t approved and he hasn’t had a car. However, nothing stops this senior in love. “I walk a lot less now, but cycling is still going well.”
Burkhardt says that his wife doesn’t know what it takes him to reach her every day. “It is completely outside her field of experience. But when I’m back I notice that she gives me a very nice hug every now and then.” His children have encouraged him to keep on visiting their mom every day.
Burkhardt’s devotion has certainly moved others. But above all, he has done everything in his power to spend as much time as possible with the love of his life-no matter what it takes.

Aeronautics (航空学) specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying the dragonfly’s flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone (无人机). Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonfly’s shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.
Chahl’s team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different dragonfly species from museum collections. Their wings are long, light and hard. Plus, their long bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.
Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid-air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off. Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can right themselves.
Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet’s air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970s was deserted.
Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear-powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan in 2034. NASA’s project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature’s most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight along the way.
8. Why did aeronautics specialists spend months studying the dragonfly’s flight?
A. To make winged drones modelled after it.
B. To build 3D models from digital images.
C. To clarify the flexibility and efficiency of drones.
D. To display the shape and movement of the dragonfly.
9. The special skill of dragonflies is their ability to ________.
A. glide to safety
B. avoid tricky situations
C. perform observation tasks
D. adjust themselves to stay stable
10. Why the author mentions TechJet’s air vehicle and Insectothopter in para. 4?
A. To showcase the inventions of engineers.
B. To compare dragonfly-like drones with other aircrafts.
C. To illustrate failed attempts of building dragonfly-like drones.
D. To explain the disadvantages of these aircrafts.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of dragonfly-like drones?
A. Doubtful B. Optimistic
C. Indifferent D. Critical
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第一段中的“Aeronautics specialists from the University of South Australia spent months studying the dragonfly’s flight, creating 3D models from digital images, to build a winged drone (无人机). (来自南澳大学的航空学专家花了数月时间研究蜻蜓的飞行方式,并通过数字图像构建三维模型,旨在打造一款有翼无人机。)”可知,专家研究蜻蜓飞行的目的是制造以其为原型的有翼无人机。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“ Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid-air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off. (研究发现,当蜻蜓发现自己在半空中倒挂时,它们能够进行倒立后空翻,以恢复平衡和正常飞行。这种特殊的技能甚至可以在蜻蜓无意识的情况下进行,这意味着它是一种被动的稳定机制,在概念上类似于飞机在关闭引擎的情况下滑翔到安全的地方。)”可知,蜻蜓的特殊技能是通过动作调整自身以保持飞行稳定。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet’s air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970s was deserted. (当然,并非所有打造仿蜻蜓无人机的尝试都能成功。科技喷气公司的飞行器本计划用作航拍、观测及安保无人机,但在投产前就宣告失败。无独有偶,美国于20世纪70年代研制的一款仿蜻蜓间谍无人机“昆虫直升机”也惨遭搁置)”可知,作者提及这两款飞行器是为了举例说明仿蜻蜓无人机的研发存在失败案例。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid.
D
A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
If you answered 10 cents, you’re not alone – most people give the same answer (the correct answer is 5 cents). It’s an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses – answers we feel are true. People give answers that “pop into their mind,” says Steven Sloman. We don’t spend much time “reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.”
The bat and ball question helps explain why we often believe in fake news. It is part of human nature to believe, says Sloman. But “the trick with fake news is to know to verify” – in other words, to stop and question what you know. In one experiment, Sloman and a colleague invented a discovery called helium rain. They told a group of volunteers about it, but admitted they could not fully explain what it was. They then asked the volunteers to rate their own understanding of helium rain. Most volunteers rated themselves 1 out of 7, meaning they did not understand the concept.
The researchers then told another group of volunteers about the discovery. This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists’ confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding, Sloman says.
According to Sloman, studies show that knowledge spreads like a contagion(传染病). This idea can be seen in many fields, including politics. “If everyone around you is saying they understand why a politician is dishonest,” Sloman says, “then you’re going to start thinking that you understand, too.”
Another explanation for the spread of fake news is “motivated reasoning,” writes Adam Wyatz, an American management professor, “we are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.”
So in a world where misleading information is common, training people to care about fact-checking is important, especially in online communities. “We should check things and not just take them at face value,” Sloman says. “Verify before you believe.”
12. Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question?
A. To warn that people often ignore skills that they learned.
B. To show that there are various answers to a question.
C. To arouse people’s interest in playing guessing games.
D. To illustrate that people tend to rush to a conclusion.
13. In paragraph 3, what does the underlined word “verify” mean?
A. To express an opinion about something.
B. To make sure something is true.
C. To think about something for a long time.
D. To follow your intuitive response.
14. When do more volunteers claim to understand helium rain?
A. When Sloman and his colleagues showed them how it works.
B. When they have more confidence in themselves.
C. When they believed that scientists understood it.
D. When some of the volunteers explained it to them.
15. Which of the following is an example of “motivated reasoning”?
A. You post a message online that gives your personal opinion about a news story.
B. You think a university professor dishonest when everybody around you say so.
C. You search online for more information about a doubtful story on social media.
D. You trust a damaging story about someone who you always judge negatively.
D 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段“It’s an example of how we often rely on intuitive (直觉的) responses – answers we feel are true. People give answers that “pop into their mind,” says Steven Sloman. We don’t spend much time “reflecting and checking whether the answer is right or wrong.”(这是一个我们如何经常依赖直觉反应的例子——我们认为答案是真实的。史蒂文·斯洛曼说,人们给出的答案“会突然进入他们的脑海”。我们不会花太多时间“反思和检查答案是否正确。”)”可判断,作者用球拍和球的例子是来说明人们倾向于匆忙下结论。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“in other words, to stop and question what you know. (换句话说,停止并质疑你所知道的一切。)”可知,识别假新闻的诀窍是知道如何验证,所以划线词verify为“核实”之意,即“确定某事是真的”。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“This time, they said that scientists could fully explain how it works. When asked to rate their understanding, the volunteers gave an average answer of 2. The scientists’ confidence gave the volunteers an increased sense of their own understanding, Sloman says.(这一次,他们说科学家们可以完全解释它是如何工作的。当被要求对他们的理解程度打分时,志愿者给出了平均2分的答案。科学家的自信让志愿者们对自己的理解有了更多的认识,Sloman说。)”可知,当他们相信科学家能理解的时候,更多的志愿者声称了解氦雨。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“we are naturally more likely to believe things that confirm our existing opinions.(我们自然而然地更倾向于相信那些证实了我们现有观点的事情。)”

故填has gained。
故填for。
lie in the fact that为固定表达,意为“在于……这一事实”。故填the。
be targeted at是固定短语,意为“以……为目标;瞄准”,主语various regional cultural tourism initiatives为复数,且描述的是客观情况,所以be用are。故填are targeted。
故填what。
故填and。
It is + adj. + to do sth. 故填to tell。

I had always been cautious around Max. He was the quiet kid in our grade, the one who sat at the back of the classroom with his hood (连衣帽) pulled low over his face. Max rarely spoke to anyone, and when he did, his words were rudely brief and often misunderstood. Rumors (谣言) about him spread like wildfire - some said he got into fights after school, others claimed he had once stolen a teacher’s wallet, l didn’t know if any of them was true, but l stayed away, just like everyone else.
Then one Friday morning, Max didn’t show up to class. A low voice of curiosity spread through the room, and soon enough, theories about his absence started flying. “He got suspended,” whispered a girl next to me. “I heard he struck a guy outside the library. ” I wasn’t surprised, and nodded in agreement.
Later that day, I found myself at the park, enjoying the first warm day of spring. That’s when I saw him - Max - sitting alone on the swings. His usual guarded expression was gone, and replaced by something I hadn’t expected: sadness. Against my better judgment, I walked over.
“Hey,” I said awkwardly.
Max looked up, surprised. “What do you want?”
“I…just saw you here and thought I’d say hi.”
He gave me a strange look but said nothing. I was about to walk away when I noticed a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand “What’s that?” I asked.
For a moment, he hesitated. Then, with a shrug, he handed it to me. It was a hospital discharge form, and the name on it wasn’t his. It was his younger sister’s. I looked at him, confused.
“She’s been sick for months,” Max explained, his voice barely heard. “Yesterday was bad. My mom couldn’t leave work, so I stayed at the hospital and looked after her all night. ”
It hit me then how wrong we had all been about Max. The tough outward appearance, the distance - he wasn’t trying to push people away. He was carrying a weight none of us understood.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day forward, things began to change
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next Monday, Max returned, but rumors remained. Someone had even started calling him “Mad Max” and the nickname caught on. I couldn’t stand it anymore. During lunch, I stood up in the middle of the cafeteria and shouted, “You guys have it all wrong! Max isn’t what you think. He’s been dealing with stuff none of you know about, so just stop!” The room went silent. I felt every eye on me, and my face burned with embarrassment. But then Max, who was sitting at a corner table, gave me a small nod of gratitude.
From that day forward, things began to change. Max still wasn’t an outgoing person, but little by little, more people started talking to him. When someone tried to bring up the old rumors, I was quick to shut them down. Max and I became friends, and he even opened up to me about his sister’s recovery. I realized how easy it had been to judge him based on hearsay, and how wrong we had been. Sometimes, people build walls not to keep others out, but to protect themselves. I never made that mistake again.

Love knows no bounds, especially when it comes to the person you’ve shared your life with. Peter Burkhardt, a 90-year-old man from Netherlands, is the embodiment (体现) of this idea.
But when I’m back, I notice that she gives me a very nice hug every now and then.” His children have encouraged him to keep on visiting their mom every day.

12 Why does the author use the example of the bat and ball question?

I was about to walk away when I noticed a wrinkled piece of paper in his hand, “What’s that?” I asked.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
