The great elephant stands in the hot African sun. Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast’s great gray skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
I peer through the lens at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me. It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me. The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”

C
The brain is protected by shock-absorbing fluid and, outside that, the skull. In a concussion (脑震荡), the brain bounces around in the skull, accelerating, decelerating or revolving. This creates a series of impacts. The neurons (神经元) in the brain are disturbed, and between those neurons, the axons — thin fibers that transmit electrical impulses — stretch or break. Inside the brain, it’s like an earthquake that has happened. Everything is still standing, but there are cracks in the roads and in building foundations.
This extremely small damage has big consequences. But decades ago, the public had a “walk it off” attitude towards concussions. That’s changed, thanks in part to an increased awareness about the long-term effects. The 2015 film Concussion tells the true story of Dr Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist studying chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder caused by repeated head injuries.
Until recently, the dark-room treatment was the standard prescribed by most doctors, involving patients resting in darkness and without any mental stimulation, until their symptoms eased off. This suggestion came out of studies in the 1990s and early 2000s that found when athletes with concussions continued with high levels of activity, they recovered more slowly than those who rested.
But people who spend more time in a dark room — sometimes called “cocooning” — are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression and sleep problems. Their bodies get weaker due to underuse, as well.
“Science and research have evolved over the past decade, showing that when you stop doing activity altogether, that actually affects your recovery process,” says Babul, a sports-injury specialist. The active-rest approach to concussion recovery promotes a slow increase in activity, starting with a day or two of light daily movement, and gradually adding activity, building to a full return to normal, unrestricted activity.
“People who follow the right guidance and management tend to recover uneventfully, and those who don’t and continue to do their activities continue to tax their brain and are likely to have long-term, persisting symptoms,” Babul says. “The key is to recognize it immediately and know what to do.”
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The workings of concussion. B. The causes of concussion.
C. The symptoms of concussion. D. The diagnosis of concussion.
9. What leads to people’s weaker bodies in the dark-room treatment?
A. The dark environment. B. Their physical pain.
C. Their insufficient activity. D. Their mental disorder.
10. Which practice is advised to help with concussion?
A. Setting a progressive fitness plan first. B. Doing heavy housework daily.
C. Playing competitive sports regularly. D. Lying in bed for the whole day.
11. What is a suitable title of the text?
A. From Outside to Inside: Concussion Treatment
B. From Darkness to Light: Concussion Shocks
C. From Inaction to Action: Concussion Recovery
D. From Nothing to Something: Concussion Study
D
In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett—“Fail again. Fail better.” It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory.
However, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”. We find ways to devalue the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere(坚持) and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism(机制). “Most of us picture ourselves as able people, so when feedback(反馈) from others suggests the opposite, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says. “The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the outside signal, so we can keep a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don’t really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if you lose a singing contest. “We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn’t mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change if the process is no longer making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing happened, however, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
12. Why does the author mention the speech of inspirational speakers in Paragraph 1?
A. To offer an approach to handling failure.
B. To introduce a common attitude towards failure.
C. To emphasize the importance of experiencing failure.
D. To discuss the relationship between success and failure.
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect”?
A. It does harm to our self-image. B. It pictures us as perfect people.
C. It protects us from false feedback. D. It makes us refuse negative feedback to ourselves.
14. What does the underlined word “prematurely” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Hurriedly. B. Mistakenly. C. Unhappily. D. Carelessly.
15. Which statement would the author most probably agree with?
A. Get ready to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
B. Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.
C. Don’t quit when goals no longer make you happy.
D. Don’t escape when our self-image gets challenged.

If you’ve been feeling a little pale and dried out, imagine how your houseplants feel in winter. While the sun streams in through windows all summer long, during winter it’s all shadows. ___16___ Here are the four ways you can make them happier.
Adjust the light. It’s not only that the sunlight is lower in the sky — it’s also available for fewer hours in the day. To guarantee your plants are getting enough vitamin D, you can try moving them closer to southern-facing windows. ___17___ Growing lights can ensure that your plant gets enough light where it needs it.
Slow down the watering. I know that watering feels like the way in which we give plants love, but it is also the way in which we drown them. Too much water results in root rot. Ideally you want to water only so much that the soil is damp, but not wet, when you stick your finger in a few inches down. ___18___
Dust your leaves. If you love your plants, you’ll tend to their leaves. ___19___ In this case, spray them with water and wipe them with a cloth. If you’re seeing leaf issues, such as all the leaves dropping, that can be a sign of over or underwatering.
___20___ Your plants enjoy the same conditions you do. They don’t enjoy hot or cold air, as either will dry them out. Each houseplant has specific needs, whether full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade, and you should keep needs in mind when providing sun exposure through the day.
A. Avoid unfavorable factors.
B. Create a welcoming environment.
C. And their “tiny holes” can get blocked by dust.
D. It should have time to dry out in between watering.
E. As a result, your plants may be looking a little dull.
F. But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance.
G. You should be careful about watering the root as it requires more water.

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away.Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away,I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home,I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my life and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No, I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs, and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

B
4. Which word can best describe the elephant in the first two paragraphs?
A. Mysterious. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
5. What does the shift in focus from the elephant to others imply in Paragraph 3?
A. The elephant is about to be attacked.
B. The author is losing interest in the elephant.
C. The elephant is part of a larger and living world.
D. The author wants to show the savanna’s dangers.
6. How does the author feel when seeing through the lens?
A. He is deeply moved and filled with sympathy.
B. He is overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength.
C. He is annoyed at the presence of other animals.
D. He is shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Nature calms our anger. B. Nature purifies our souls.
C. Nature heals our wounds. D. Nature enriches our imagination.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B

根据第一段中“Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth. (这只野兽慢慢地抬起头,它粗壮的鼻子巧妙地卷曲在附近一棵树的叶子上,把叶子抽出来,礼貌地塞进嘴里。)”和第二段中“Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth. (它粗糙的毛发从皮肤上伸出来,两根巨大的白色象牙从嘴的两侧优雅地弯曲着。)”可知,前两段通过细致动作和雅致的外貌展现大象的优雅。故选D项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
根据第四段中“The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent. (变焦镜头几乎展示了这头大象的每一个细节:它的左耳上有三个小伤口,这是它小时候在荆棘树下玩耍时留下的,它的前腿上有一个伤疤,那是它年轻时被狮子在不知道的情况下抓住的,它那又大又珍贵的象牙上有几十年生活在这片尘土飞扬的大陆上无情的草原上的风化。)”和第五段中“And then the elephant looks at me. It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. (然后大象看着我。它用那双长着睫毛的大眼睛看着我,从那巨大而隐蔽的深处发出一种温暖。)”可知,作者透过镜头看到大象的沧桑与灵性,他深受触动且充满同情。故选A项。
根据第六段中“It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore. (它接受和原谅。它去爱。但最主要的是,它只是感到悲伤。它为我感到难过。我不能再这样下去了。)”和最后一段“I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.” (我把视线从瞄准具上移开,把枪还给了我的搭档。“我们回家吧,”我轻声说,“我们就回家吧。”)”可知,大象的凝视使作者放下猎枪,选择离开,体现自然唤醒人性良知,即“自然净化心灵”。故选B项。
A 9. C 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“The brain is protected by shock-absorbing fluid and, outside that, the skull. (大脑由吸收震动的液体保护,在液体之外,还有头骨。在脑震荡时,大脑在头骨中跳动,加速、减速或旋转。这产生了一系列的影响。大脑中的神经元受到干扰,在这些神经元之间,轴突——传输电脉冲的细纤维——伸展或断裂。)”可知,该段主要描述了脑震荡发生时大脑内部的物理变化,包括碰撞、神经元受损等,属于脑震荡的作用机制。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Their bodies get weaker due to underuse, as well. (他们的身体因缺乏活动而变得虚弱。)”可知,这种疗法的问题在于活动不足导致身体虚弱。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“The active-rest approach to concussion recovery promotes a slow increase in activity, starting with a day or two of light daily movement, and gradually adding activity, building to a full return to normal, unrestricted activity. (脑震荡恢复的活动性休息方法促进活动的缓慢增加,从每一两天的轻微运动开始,逐渐增加活动,直到完全恢复正常、不受限制的活动。)”可知,一般推荐用渐进性恢复计划治疗脑震荡。故选A项。
B 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第一段中的“In today’s motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett—‘Fail again. Fail better.’(在今天的励志文学中,失败常常被视为值得庆祝的事情。富有励志演讲者喜欢引用小说家塞缪尔·贝克特的话——‘再次失败。失败得更好。’)”可知,作者提到励志演讲者引用的话“再次失败。失败得更好。”是想证明如今的励志文学常常将失败视为值得庆祝的事情,由此可推测出,作者想要介绍对待失败的普遍态度。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Sjastad explains that ‘sour-grape effect’ is a self-protective mechanism(机制). ‘Most of us picture ourselves as able people, so when feedback(反馈) from others suggests the opposite, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,’ he says. (Sjastad解释说,‘酸葡萄效应’是一种自我保护机制。‘我们大多数人都认为自己是有能力的人,所以当外部反馈不是这样时,它会对自我形象构成严重威胁,’他说。)”和“The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the outside signal, so we can keep a positive sense of self.(最简单的解决方法是否认或为这种辩解信号辩解,这样我们就可以保持积极的自我意识。)”
根据画线词后的“rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve”可知,而不是坚持一会儿,看看我们是否可以学习和提高,这里应与rather than后的内容相反,表示的是我们会提前做出不再坚持这种决定,prematurely意为“提前地。过早地,仓促地”,与A项“匆忙地”意思最接近。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing happened, however, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.(然而,通过学会面对失望,而不是贬低它的重要性并且假装什么都没发生,你可能会发现实现目标更容易。)”
G. You should be careful about watering the root, as it requires more water.
E 17. F 18. D 19. C 20. B
前文“While the sun streams in through windows all summer long, during winter it’s all shadows. (整个夏天,阳光都透过窗户照进来,而在冬天,只有阴影。)”提到冬季阳光不足,植物处于阴影中,后文“Here are the four ways you can make them happier. (这里有四种方法可以让它们更快乐。)”引出改善植物状态的四个方法,此处应描述冬季阳光不足时植物的状态,因此E项“As a result, your plants may be looking a little dull. (因此,你的植物可能看起来有些暗淡。)”符合语境,和前文构成因果关系,引出后文的改善方法。故选E。
【17题详解】
前文“To guarantee your plants are getting enough vitamin D, you can try moving them closer to southern-facing windows. (为了保证你的植物获得足够的维生素D,你可以试着把它们移到朝南的窗户附近。)”建议将植物移到朝南窗户附近,后文“Growing lights can ensure that your plant gets enough light where it needs it. (生长灯可以确保你的植物在需要的地方得到足够的光照。)”建议用生长灯补光,此处应指出移动植物后自然光仍不足时的补充方案,因此F项“But ultimately you may need some man-made assistance. (但最终你可能需要一些人造辅助。)”符合语境,与前文的自然光方案构成转折,引出后文的生长灯。故选F。
【18题详解】
前文“Ideally you want to water only so much that the soil is damp, but not wet, when you stick your finger in a few inches down. (理想情况下,浇水的量不能超过土壤湿润的程度,当你把手指伸进去几英寸时,不能太湿。)”提醒浇水需适量,土壤不能过湿,此处可补充把握浇水时间,因此D项“It should have time to dry out in between watering. (在浇水之间应该有时间让它变干。)”符合语境,承接前文,其中的It指代前文的the soil。故选D。
【19题详解】
前文“If you love your plants, you’ll tend to their leaves. (如果你爱你的植物,你就会照顾它们的叶子。)”建议照顾植物叶片,后文“In this case, spray them with water and wipe them with a cloth. (在这种情况下,用水喷洒,然后用抹布擦拭。)”给出喷水擦拭的具体方法,此处应解释清洁叶片的原因,因此C项“And their “tiny holes” can get blocked by dust. (它们的“小孔”可能被灰尘堵塞。)”符合语境,承前启后,其中的their指代前文的their leaves。故选C。
【20题详解】
后文“Your plants enjoy the same conditions you do. They don’t enjoy hot or cold air, as either will dry them out. Each houseplant has specific needs, whether full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade, and you should keep needs in mind when providing sun exposure through the day.

故填although/though/while。

故填as。

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet.” Back then,I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day, Emily handed me an application form. “You’re ready,” she said with a confident smile. It was for a local body-building show, the very thing I’d once feared. My heart raced as I looked at the form, but then I thought of all the progress I'd made. I took a deep breath and filled it out, determined to face my fear. I knew this was a chance to prove to myself that I could achieve something I never thought possible.
Soon, I jumped into weeks of preparation. Every day, I spent hours in the gym, following Emily’s strict workout plan. I also paid close attention to my diet, making sure I got the right nutrients. As the show day drew near, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. But with Emily’s constant encouragement and support, I felt more and more confident. Finally, the big day arrived, and I stepped onto the stage, ready to show the world what I’d accomplished.
