The Genre of Math: Building Math and Literacy (读写的) Connections
Join this to explore mathematics as a genre and build connections to reading and writing! The time is from January 9, 2025, 9:30 p. m. to January 10, 00:30. Its form is online.
About this event
Have you ever considered the genre of mathematics? Mathematics is a unique genre, but is still full of specific literacy structures. Number sentences, operation symbols, numbers, and the language we use in mathematics are connected to what we teach in literacy. This workshop is designed to help us think differently about mathematics.
By identifying and using these literacy and math connections, we can create a more uniform learning experience for our students as they learn. Rather than learning a whole new mathematics language, let’s work together to consider how mathematics is related to what students already know, or are learning, in their literacy classrooms. This way has the potential to change classrooms into strengths-based mathematics classrooms as we explore what students know in literacy and how that learning is connected to mathematics.
Who Should Attend
“The Genre of Mathematics” is designed for classroom teachers, special education teachers, team leads, math specialists, and math teaching assistants. If you support student learning literacy and mathematics, this is for you!
What to Expect
This workshop will include rich content and opportunities for participants to participate in the work of math calculation.

I had wanted to be a cellist for as long as I could remember. At fifteen, I won a scholarship to a specialist music school. I got up at 5 a. m. to play scales, practised at lunchtime and returned to my cello after lessons.
One evening, while practicing a demanding piece, I pushed myself too far. I felt a burning pain between my wrist and elbow. When it hadn’t got better after a day or two, I started to panic. Days became weeks. I still could not write or play. Weeks turned into months. Opportunities for concerts, recitals, and competitions came and went.
When I wasn’t sitting with my instrument, I was punishing myself for my own stupidity. My technique had probably not been secure enough for the demands I was placing on it. But now it was too late. Over two years, I gradually recovered some arm function. I was able to play some early music pieces by composers such as Handel and Bach, as the movements in their compositions are gentler and lighter. However, the possibility of my arm letting me down has never left me.
The turning point came, unexpectedly, during a photo-shoot for an up-to-date picture. The photographer suggested I get my cell o and see what images of playing might look like. I hesitated—I didn’t see myself as a cellist any more. But then I fetched it and sat playing pieces of Bach. At that moment, the lens pointing at my instrument and me, I began to understand something I had only half sensed until then. Away from my cello, my shadow was missing. Without it I felt incomplete. But with my instrument I was protected and entirely happy in my own skin.
During that photo-shoot I realized I needed to find out what the cello, and its absence, had meant to other cellists, to understand what it meant to me. So I planned a journey across Europe. I encountered cellos destroyed by war and shipwreck, and even a cello that had been turned into a beehive. I even played with a resourceful cellist, who, having lost the use of his right thumb, ties his bow onto his hand with a bicycle inner tube.
Over the course of my travels, I learned I was not alone. Besides, my experience might help others. I am also beginning to look for ways to return to the pieces I loved. Supported by a community of musicians in similar situations, I now celebrate every concert as a step towards healing.
24. Why does the author mention “Handel and Bach” in paragraph 3?
A. To contrast present and past. B. To show limited recovery progress.
C. To highlight professional competence. D. To explain the simplicity of early music.
25. Why was the photo-shoot experience a turning point for the author?
A. It improved her professional image. B. It showed her constant efforts paid off.
C. It deepened her connection to the cello. D. It allowed her to meet incredible cellists.
26. What does the underlined phrase “my shadow was missing” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Loss of identity. B. Exhaustion of body.
C. Fear of failure. D. Lack of protection.
27. Which of the following best describes the passage?
A. Fortune favors the bold. B. Constant dripping wears the stone.
C. Good things come to those who wait. D. When given lemons, make lemonade.

A new study reveals a breakthrough in the field of snakebite treatment. Researchers, led by David Baker from the University of Washington, have designed new proteins — unlike any found in nature — that can inactivate (使……灭活) some of the most poisonous components of snakebite toxins.
Snakebites represent a substantial global health issue, affecting millions of people each year. According to the World Health Organization, over 2 million people suffer from snakebites annually, with more than 100, 000 deaths and 300, 000 cases of permanent disabilities. Current treatment options, mainly obtained from animal blood, often present weaknesses, including high production costs, limited efficiency, and severe side effects, such as causing shock and breathing difficulties.
With these challenges, Baker and his team have made effective use of deep learning tools to develop artificial proteins capable of attaching to and inactivating toxins. The study focuses on a specific group of snake proteins known as three-finger toxins. These toxins often avoid the immune system (免疫系统), making traditional treatments ineffective. Notably, the newly designed proteins provide significant protection against deadly amounts of three-finger toxins in mice, achieving survival rates ranging from 80% to 100%.
By avoiding the lengthy and resource-intensive processes associated with traditional antibody development, this approach could lead to more accessible and affordable treatments. Also, the new proteins are smaller, allowing for greater penetration (渗透) into body systems to quickly inactivate the toxins and reduce damage. The efficiency and speed at which these proteins can be designed and produced using AI indicate a transformative shift in drug discovery processes, especially in resource-limited settings.
While the study’s findings are encouraging the researchers acknowledge that traditional antitoxins will remain central to snakebite treatment for the near future. The newly created computer-designed antitoxins can be integrated into existing treatment as additions, enhancing the overall effectiveness of established treatments. Meanwhile, scientists believe the new method employed in this study could be beneficial to tackling other diseases, potentially leading to the emergence of less expensive medicines for various health challenges.
28. Which is a disadvantage of the current snakebite treatments?
A. They mainly rely on animal blood. B. They can lead to serious health risks.
C. They are effective only in certain regions. D. They may leave toxins in patients’ bodies.
29. How did Baker’s team deal with the current challenges?
A. By inventing deep learning tools. B. By identifying more snake toxins.
C. By enhancing the immune system. D. By designing AI-generated proteins.
30. What aspect of Baker’s study is talked about in paragraph 4?
A. Its advantages. B. Its strategies. C. Its procedures. D. Its limitations.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The traditional treatments are out of date. B. The existing approaches are hard to change.
C. The new method might inspire other treatments. D. The new antitoxins will be the core of future methods.
D
In a contest for jobs requiring the most patience, art restoration might take first place. Traditionally, conservators restore paintings by recreating the artwork’s exact colors to fill in the damage, one spot at a time. Even with the help of X-ray imaging and coloring analyses, several parts of the expensive process, such as the cleaning and restoring, are done by hand. Meanwhile, direct restoring might devalue the painter’s original vision.
That’s where Alex Kachkine comes in. The MIT student has developed a way to apply digital restorations onto a damaged painting. In short, the approach involves using pre-existing AI tools to create a digital version of what the freshly painted artwork would have looked like. Based on this version, Kachkine’s new software creates a digital map of the retouches (修复点) with exact colors, necessary to fill the gaps present in the painting today.
The digital map is then printed onto two layers of thin, transparent (透明) film — one with colored retouches and one with the same pattern in white. The film with two layers forms a mask. This mask is attached to the painting to position the retouches, which helps achieve a faithful restoration in just hours — instead of months of work.
Kachkine demonstrated the approach on a 15th-century oil painting in need of restoration, by a Dutch artist whose name is now unknown. The retouches were generated by matching the surrounding color, copying similar patterns visible elsewhere in the painting or the artist’s style in other paintings. Overall, the painting’s 5,612 damaged regions were filled with 57, 314 different colors in 3.5 hours — 66 hours faster than traditional methods would have likely taken.
The new process still poses concerns, such as whether the applied film disturbs the viewing experience or whether AI-generated corrections to the painting are accurate. Still, Kachkine says this technique could help address the large number of damaged artworks that live in storage rooms, enabling the restoration of countless damaged paintings considered not deserving of high conservation budgets.
32. What can we know about traditional art restoration?
A. It causes more damage. B. It consumes more labor.
C. It lacks technical assistance. D. It adds the value of an artwork.
33. What can Kachkine’s new software do?
A Decorate the damaged paintings. B. Make a map of colored retouches.
C. Create a vivid copy of the painting. D. Promote the application of AI tools.
34. How were the retouches of 15th-century oil painting achieved?
A. By applying extra colors. B. By referring to other painters’ works.
C. By learning from traditional methods. D. By studying the artist’s painting techniques.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. How AI Influences Our Future B. A New Brush for Art Restoration
C. When Restoration Meets Tight Budgets D. A Rising Conservator of Ancient Paintings

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Today I turn eight, so whatever I say goes.
Grandma was gardening when we pulled up for the party. I ran straight to her. “Happy birthday, sweetie!” She squeezed me into a hug, whispering about my favorite chocolate-strawberry cake she had made, and her intention to persuade my parents to let me play video games, which hadn’t happened since I was six. Then, I noticed Grandpa, who, contrary to my grandma, always sits outside and complains that the air isn’t as fresh as it is in the mountains where he used to go hiking for days when he was young, and that kids have no respect, claiming that all they do is play video games. Now on the porch sat Grandpa, like a sack of wrinkled onions, asleep in a rocking chair, snoring like thunder, on his only grandson’s birthday!
“Wake up, sleepyhead!” I mounted the porch steps, only to be greeted by more snores. “Fine,” I groaned, “we’ll have the cake without you!” It was Grandma’s request to wait ten more minutes that brought me to tears. An angry hurricane was spinning up inside me, and I exploded. My fists clenched, I had been sobbing and screaming until Dad held my shoulder firmly. Mom touched my hair, instructing me to take a deep breath and relax.
Finally, Grandpa was awake, coughing, snorting, and squinting right at me like an angry goat. “Boy,” he spoke in a rough, low voice, “come here.” He was struggling to his feet when Grandma hurried over with his walker, which Grandpa usually pushes at about 0.3 miles per hour. “You and I,” said Grandpa, “are going on a walk.” “NO!” I shouted. “You can’t tell me what to do!” But Grandpa kept looking at me with that scary look on his face. Not even Grandma came to my rescue. Unwilling as I was, I gave in and dragged myself forward. Then we were inching down the path into the garden. I expected him to lecture me-about ceasing to be a spoiled child and respecting my elders, blah, blah, blah. Instead, he asked in a soft voice whether my parents were very busy. I was too confused to respond.

【原文】 W: Citizens of Nanjing, our “Heritage Trees Conservation Program” urgently calls for your support! These magnificent ancient trees — some dating back more than 500 years—are not merely natural wonders but irreplaceable pillars of our city’s biodiversity. Serving as important habitats, their hollow trunks house 80% of Nanjing’s local owl and woodpecker populations, while their seeds and fruits sustain over 200 bird species, including migratory birds that rely on them during seasonal journeys. Beyond ecology, these trees are living monuments, embodying centuries of history and cultural heritage. Yet, despite their ecological and historical significance, rapid urban development has caused serious damage. Since 2010, construction projects have already destroyed 15% of Nanjing’s heritage trees, threatening the fragile ecosystems that depend on them. Without immediate action, we risk losing these natural treasures forever. We’re recruiting volunteers to document tree locations using our app, monitor bird activities, and report damage. Selected participants will receive training from ornithologists and earn “Green Guardian” certification. Together, we can preserve these living museums.

The turning point came unexpectedly, during a photo-shoot for an up-to-date picture.

While the study’s findings are encouraging, the researchers acknowledge that traditional antitoxins will remain central to snakebite treatment for the near future.

The digital map is then printed onto two layers of thin, transparent (透明的) film — one with colored retouches and one with the same pattern in white.
A. Decorate the damaged paintings.
【答案】32. B 33. B 34. D 35. B
【解析】

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右:

Paragraph 2: It hit me how selfish I was.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
“Help me sit there”, he demanded, pointing to a bench. Considering that I can do whatever on my birthday, I was about to tum him down when his shaking legs and bent knees forced me to grip his arms and lower him down nice and slow. “Thank you!” he said, breathing hard like he had climbed a hill. Then he talked about his youth and his adventures in the mountains. I listened intently and asked good questions, realizing that there was more to him than just the grumpy old man I had seen earlier.
It hit me how selfish I was. I had been so focused on my own desires and frustrations that I had failed to see Grandpa as a person with his own stories and struggles. Thinking of all the attempts he had made to connect with me, I realized how impatient and disrespectful I was. It was then that I resolved to be more understanding and patient. When we returned to the party for the cake, I apologized to Grandpa and was responded with a big hug of forgiveness. In cheers of “happy birthday,” I shed tears again, but it somewhat felt more like my birthday than ever.
