Roger started out as an unpaid worker in a small flower shop. He has become the owner of a florist company whose sales are well over $100,000 a year. One day when Roger was only twelve, he stopped at a local flower shop. He asked the owner if he could work for him, without pay, in order to learn the business. Roger started working every day after school and on weekends. After two years on the job, he finally asked for a small salary. The owners told him he “wasn’t good enough to be paid.” So he quit, and found a paying job at another local flower shop. He worked hard there, but after six months they laid him off because business was slow. Not discouraged, Roger decided to do it alone and started his own flower store in a basement. He started his business with only sixty-five dollars. He bought old refrigerators at garage sales and knocked the shelves out. This turned them into coolers for his fresh-cut flowers. His business grew rapidly as he built up a reputation for top quality and fine service. In 1977, Roger bought out the flower store where he had worked without pay for over two years. The people who said he “wasn’t good enough” were astonished to find that they were being taken over by a teenager. He had plans to renovate (整修) the whole store. One of the reasons the owners sold out to Roger was that the store wasn’t doing well. But after Roger took over ownership and redid the store, business started booming. In fact, business was so good that after one year, he celebrated by buying out the other store where he had worked. Roger then combined both stores and moved to a location in the center of his town. The new store has 2,000 square feet and seven employees. And he did it all before he reached the age of twenty. 41. After two years on the job, he finally asked for a small salary.(为了学习业务,他问老板是否可以无偿为他工作。 可知有2年是免费工作;“Not discouraged, Roger decided to do it alone and started his own flower store in a basement.(罗杰没有气馁,他决定独自创业,在地下室开了自己的花店。)”可知,他在地下室开了自己的第一家花店和倒数第二段的“Roger then combined both stores and moved to a location in the center of his town.(然后罗杰把这两家店合并,搬到了镇中心的一个地方。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Roger Conner is a modern-day Horatio Alger hero. Roger started out as an unpaid worker in a small flower shop. He has become the owner of a florist company whose sales are well over $100,000 a year.(Roger Conner是当代的Horatio Alger英雄。 根据文章倒数第二段“One of the reasons the owners sold out to Roger was that the store wasn’t doing well. But after Roger took over ownership and redid the store, business started booming. In fact, business was so good that after one year, he celebrated by buying out the other store where he had worked.(老板们把公司卖给罗杰的原因之一是商店经营得不好。 根据文章第一段“Roger Conner is a modern-day Horatio Alger hero. Roger started out as an unpaid worker in a small flower shop. He has become the owner of a florist company whose sales are well over $100,000 a year.(Roger Conner是当代的Horatio Alger英雄。 Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead. “My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.” Astronomers — scientists who study stars and planets — have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it. There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats, frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (迁徙的) birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.” Countless more animal casualties (伤亡) result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings. But some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase a person’s chances of getting cancer. Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night. 46. It happened last night that _____. A. the city’s lights affected the meteor watching B. the meteors flew past before being noticed C. the city light show attracted many people D. the meteor watching ended up a social outing 47. What do the astronomers complain about? A. Meteor showers occur less often than before. B. Their observation equipment is in poor repair. C. Light pollution has remained unsolved for years. D. Their eyesight is failing due to artificial lighting. 48. What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 4? A. Birds may take other migration paths. B. Animals’ living habits may change suddenly C. Varieties of animals will become sharply reduced D. Animals’ survival is threatened by outdoor lighting. 49. Lighting regulations in Flagstaff, Arizona are put into effect to _____. A. lessen the chance of getting cancer B. create an ideal observation condition C ensure citizens a good sleep at night D. enable all creatures to live in harmony 50. What message does the author most want to give us? A. Saving wildlife is saving ourselves. B. Great efforts should be made to save energy. C. Human activities should be environmentally friendly. D. New equipment should be introduced for space study.. A 47. C 48. D 49. B 50. 根据第一段的最后一句话“What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.(然而,他们却发现,城市的灯光照亮了天空,使划过头顶的流星的光芒都变暗了)”可知,昨晚城市的灯光影响了流星雨的观赏。故选A。 根据第三段中的“Astronomers — scientists who study stars and planets — have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past.(天文学家——研究恒星和行星的科学家——几十年来一直在抱怨这个问题。 根据第四段中“There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. 根据最后一段中的“Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory.(翡翠谷是唯一一个意识到光污染负面影响的社区。 尤其根据最后一段中的“Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.(世界各地都做出了类似的努力,并且正在开展一项运动,提醒我们在不用灯的时候关灯,这样其他生物就可以共享夜晚)”可知,作者最想给我们的信息是人类活动应该是环保的。故选C。 It is widely recognized that self-discipline gives us freedom. Those who can control themselves have the ability to make the best use of their time, thus lost in the joy of freedom while other people suffer from “painful self-discipline”, stuck in a difficult situation where they feel guilty for not being able to complete the missions on their never-ending to-do lists. But do these pains come from self-discipline? Not exactly. The people who are anxious about being so-called self-disciplined masters are actually missing the point of this virtue. It’s not a “the more the better” kind of thing. Rather, it’s the capability to find a complicated balance between work and entertainment, which enables you to work more efficiently and to take control of your life. Thus, there’s no need to push yourself too hard. As a self-disciplined student, I think I understand the key to easing the sometime painful learning process with all kinds of after-school activities. Self-discipline urges me to set aside adequate time for all of my required schoolwork and to efficiently finish it. What’s more, having a high learning efficiency means that if I am interested in a certain topic in my textbook or the knowledge of a specific field, I can spend more time exploring it in depth, while devoting myself to my own interests. However, each time the bell for the end of class rings, I’m always the first to grab the basketball and dash to the court to enjoy the thrill of a ball game with my friends until the sun sinks below the horizon. As I said, the real freedom to enjoy a wonderful life is based on self-discipline. And the final aim of self-discipline is to enjoy a wonderful life. Being self-disciplined is about doing the proper thing at the proper time. You have to push yourself under the guidance of self-discipline to achieve high efficiency in your daily routine. But don’t be too tough on yourself because unreasonable time management may drain you of the energy and passion you need to struggle on. Fit in adequate diversions from work within your carefully designed schedule, and I’m sure you can remove the obstacles that stand in your path to the ultimate freedom. 51. How does the author develop Paragraph 1? A. By giving an example. B. By making a comparison. C. By analyzing a reason. D. By presenting a result. 52. What can we know about self-disciplined students in Paragraph 3? A. They have great trouble casing the painful learning process. B. They can hardly spare time to finish their assignments. C. They can pursue their hobbies with high learning efficiency. D. They spend most time enjoying ball games with their friends. 53. What is the ultimate goal of self-discipline in the author ‘s view? A. To suffer mental pain. B. To enjoy a happy life. C. To manage time scientifically. D. To achieve high efficiency. 54. What does the underlined word “drain” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Exhaust. B. Increase. C. Provide. D. Preserve. 55 What is the main idea of the passage? A. Self-discipline is the key to achieving high efficiency. B. People should be strict with themselves to be self-disciplined. C. The pursuit of self-discipline is a painful process. D. Self-discipline is about finding a balance and leading to real freedom. B 52. C 53. B 54. A 55. 根据第一段“Those who can control themselves have the ability to make the best use of their time, thus lost in the joy of freedom while other people suffer from “painful self-discipline”, stuck in a difficult situation where they feel guilty for not being able to complete the missions on their never-ending to-do lists.(那些能控制自己的人有能力充分利用他们的时间,因此迷失在自由的喜悦中,而其他人则遭受“痛苦的自律”,陷入困境,因为他们无法完成没完没了的任务而感到内疚。)” 根据第三段“Self-discipline urges me to set aside adequate time for all of my required schoolwork and to efficiently finish it. What’s more, having a high learning efficiency means that if I am interested in a certain topic in my textbook or the knowledge of a specific field, I can spend more time exploring it in depth, while devoting myself to my own interests.(自律促使我为所有要求的作业留出足够的时间,并有效地完成它。 根据最后一段“And the final aim of self-discipline is to enjoy a wonderful life.(自律的最终目的是享受美好的生活。)” 根据最后一段“unreasonable time management(不合理的时间管理)”和“of the energy and passion you need to struggle on(你所需要的继续拼搏的能量与激情)”可知,不合理的时间管理可能会耗尽你继续奋斗所需的能量和激情,drain的意思是“消耗”,和Exhaust意思相近,故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第二段“But do these pains come from self-discipline? Not exactly. The people who are anxious about being so-called self-disciplined masters are actually missing the point of this virtue. It’s not a “the more the better” kind of thing. Rather, it’s the capability to find a complicated balance between work and entertainment, which enables you to work more efficiently and to take control of your life. Thus, there’s no need to push yourself too hard.(但这些痛苦来自自律吗? Every child has a dream of what they want to be, right? When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer firefighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father passed away and she was unable to do volunteer work with him. However, she was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter. Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renec works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy firefighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination. When I asked Renee what the best part of her job is, she replied, “Helping people and the satisfaction of saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes, people die in the accident, for which I was very sorry,” said Renee. I was inspired by this because I know I would be very scared to do her job and don’t know if I could handle seeing people die. With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone gets a fair shot and they all do the same jobs. 41. A. works hard in the flower business B. is born into a rich family C. starts out poor and becomes rich D. becomes famous Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. 46. New equipment should be introduced for space study.. It is widely recognized that self-discipline gives us freedom. 52. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and helps me believe that I can do anything. 56.
