For the past year, I’ve spent many hours and many Tuesdays volunteering at a wonderful zoo. I worked in the kitchen, helping to prepare food for the animals. This zoo is part of the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums). Many animals here are part of a special program. The goal of this program is to protect animal species (物种) that are at risk or in danger of disappearing. The zoo has breeding plans to help these animals survive.
I quickly learned that it’s easy to love all the animals. I especially liked one animal right away — the zoo’s prehensile-tailed porcupine (卷尾豪猪) named Fin. You might have seen YouTube videos of these animals eating and making cute noises. I learned that Fin really loves bananas and likes to peel them himself. One of my favorite things about Fin is his little nose, which looks like a pig’s nose.
I also learned that nothing gets done without teamwork from the animal keepers. Taking care of all the zoo animals requires a lot of work. The keepers know a lot about every animal in the zoo. They work very hard, day and night, to keep the animals safe and healthy. Even in winter, the keepers stay at the zoo to make sure all the animals are happy and fed.
Zoos are important. They teach visitors why we need to protect these animals and their homes. Most zoos care deeply for their animals and work very hard to keep them happy and healthy.
4. What do we know about the AZA program?
A. It feeds animals with natural foods. B. It searches for uncommon animals.
C. It saves species from dying out. D. It provides wild areas for animals.
5. What is one of the author’s favorite things about Fin?
A. Fin’s love for bananas. B. Fin’s nose similar to a pig’s.
C. Fin’s appearance in YouTube videos. D. Fin’s cute eating noises.
6. What does the author imply about zookeepers?
A. They have medical backgrounds. B. They train animals for exercises.
C. They become animals’ friends. D. They value animals’ emotions.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Zoos are not animal cages. B. Zoos should be free to all.
C. Zoos are not as good as nature. D. Zoos should be under control.
C 5. B 6. D 7. A

Do you move at every opportunity, or are you more of a sofa potato? Many of us sit for long at work or enjoy a good Netflix film in our downtime. But, this all means that we don’t move as much as we should for health. A new study published in Jama International Medicine confirms that the more you walk, the lower your risk of cancer and other conditions. Quality is important, too. The higher the intensity of steps, the better the overall benefits of the exercise.
There is a warning, however. The advantages of walking seem to level out once you’ve done around 10,000 steps. So should we be aiming to walk this amount every day?
The general view is that keeping your step count up is ultimately better for your body. The same study found that the people who take 10,000 steps have a lower risk of cancer than those who take 8,000. But our bodies are not perfect machines, and we have the complexities of genetics and other lifestyle factors to contend with. Additionally, it’s not as simple as that your health drops with step less than 10,000, or over that number, your health keeps increasing. And step counts above 10,000 have a similar risk and health benefit as hitting it, so you don’t have to push yourself to do much more than that.
A similar study found that our risk of dementia also decreases with the more steps we take every day. The people who took 3,800 steps had roughly half the reduced risk for dementia as people who took 9,800 steps. For those who are too comfortable on the couch, even the lower number would be an excellent step count to aim for as a start.
So make sure you get up and take movement breaks during your day — even if it’s walking to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee. It’s not just the routine 30 minutes of scheduled exercise that keeps us healthy. As science has shown, it’s every step that counts.
8. What can be inferred from the passage about people who are “sofa potatoes”?
A. They are at a risk of health problems. B. They cannot benefit from walking,
C. They are more likely to watch Netflix. D. They aim for at least 10,000 steps every day.
9. How do people usually find the relationship between step count and health benefits?
A. The less you walk, the lower risk of cancer. B. The more steps taken, the better for health.
C. A lot of factors play a role in step for health. D. Only scheduled steps count for health benefit.
10. What does the example of the risk of dementia in paragraph 4 show?
A. Taking 9,800 steps can completely prevent dementia.
B. Even a relatively small increase in step count can be beneficial.
C. People who take 3,800 steps have no risk of dementia.
D. The risk of dementia is only related to the number of steps.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Magic Number: 10,000 Steps B. Steps: More Than Just a Form of Exercise
C. Couch Potatoes vs. Fitness Enthusiasts D. The Link Between Steps and Health: Inseparable
A 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“Do you move at every opportunity, or are you more of a sofa potato? Many of us sit for long at work or enjoy a good Netflix film in our downtime. But, this all means that we don’t move as much as we should for health. A new study published in Jama International Medicine confirms that the more you walk, the lower your risk of cancer and other conditions. Quality is important, too. The higher the intensity of steps, the better the overall benefits of the exercise. 故选A。
根据第三段“The general view is that keeping your step count up is ultimately better for your body. (一般的观点是,保持你的步数最终对你的身体更好。)”可知,普遍的观点是保持步数增加最终对身体有好处。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The people who took 3,800 steps had roughly half the reduced risk for dementia as people who took 9,800 steps. (与每天走9800步的人相比,每天走3800步的人患痴呆症的风险降低了大约一半。)”可知,即使是从3800步到9800步这样相对小的步数增加,对降低痴呆风险也是有益的。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A new study published in Jama International Medicine confirms that the more you walk, the lower your risk of cancer and other conditions. Quality is important, too. The higher the intensity of steps, the better the overall benefits of the exercise. (发表在《Jama International Medicine》上的一项新研究证实,你走得越多,患癌症和其他疾病的风险就越低。质量也很重要。步数越高,锻炼的整体效果就越好。)”以及文章深入探讨了步数(数量)、步频(质量)以及不同步数与各种状况之间的关系,如癌症和痴呆症。它真正揭示了步数与健康之间的联系。D选项“步数与健康的关系:不可分割”最符合文章标题。故选D。
D
When you’re bored, what do you do? The answer is a no-brainer: you reach for your phone. Five minutes of doggy pictures can seem like the perfect break. But a new unpublished study has bad news. Reaching for your phone is likely to leave you feeling more bored.
To figure out the relationship between phones and boredom, the research team set up an app on the phones of 83 volunteers to keep an eye on how often they used their devices. They also asked these volunteers to keep detailed diaries at work, recording their level of tiredness and boredom.
The researchers’ first discovery was no shocker. We’re on our phones a lot. Phone breaks were very frequent: in the 20 minutes following each questionnaire, volunteers picked up their phone 52 percent of the time, spending an average of around 90 seconds on it each time. Equally unsurprising was the second finding: the more tired we are, the more likely we are to reach for our phones. The real kicker was the final finding. While we look to our phones to relieve our tiredness and boredom, screen time actually seemed to increase feelings of boredom.
The research team thought about the different reasons why this might be so. Shifting from work to your phone and back again may end up being more tiring in mind than it is stimulating (提神的). In other words, that baby goat video was nice, but not worth the cost to your brain in effort and concentration. Besides, picking up your phone might just serve as a reminder of all the fun and interesting things out there you could be doing if you didn’t have to fill out paperwork.
This one small study can’t clearly say if either of these explanations is right, but the basic takeaway is pretty clear: A quick look at your phone is going to make your brain feel even more fried. If so, what to do instead?
12. Why did the research team set up an app on the volunteers’ phones?
A. To ensure their rest time. B. To remove their boredom.
C. To track their phone usage. D. To record their tiredness.
13. What do the underlined words “the real kicker” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. The most unexpected. B. The most advanced.
C. The most frequent. D. The most relieving.
14. The baby goat video is mentioned in paragraph 4 to show ________.
A. phones can be tiring B. phones can be inspiring
C. phones can function as a reminder D. phones can benefit our paperwork
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Why screen time is harmful. B. How to take a better break.
C. Recommended online activities. D. Studies on phone addiction.
C 13. A 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中“To figure out the relationship between phones and boredom, the research team set up an app on the phones of 83 volunteers to keep an eye on how often they used their devices.(为了弄清楚手机和无聊之间的关系,研究团队在83名志愿者的手机上安装了一个应用程序,以跟踪他们使用设备的频率)”可知,研究小组在志愿者的手机上安装了一个应用程序是为了跟踪他们的电话使用情况,故选C。
根据划线短语上文“The researchers’ first discovery was no shocker. We’re on our phones a lot. Equally unsurprising was the second finding: the more tired we are, the more likely we are to reach for our phones.(研究人员的第一个发现并不令人震惊,我们经常使用手机。同样不足为奇的是第二个发现:我们越累,我们就越有可能伸手去拿手机。)”可知,前两个发现——我们经常使用手机;我们越累,我们就越有可能伸手去拿手机,这都是很常见的,不足为奇的,根据划线短语所在句子“The real kicker was the final finding. While we look to our phones to relieve our tiredness and boredom, screen time actually seemed to increase feelings of boredom.(The real kicker是最终的发现。
根据倒数第二段中“Shifting from work to your phone and back again may end up being more tiring in mind than it is stimulating (提神的). In other words, that baby goat video was nice, but not worth the cost to your brain in effort and concentration.(从工作转移到手机上然后再从手机上转移到工作上可能最终会让人感到更累而不是刺激。换句话说,那个小山羊视频很不错,但不值得你的大脑付出精力和注意力的代价)”可推知,第四段提到小羊视频是为了展示玩手机会让人更累,故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This one small study can’t clearly say if either of these explanations is right, but the basic takeaway is pretty clear: A quick look at your phone is going to make your brain feel even more fried. If so, what to do instead?(这项小型研究无法清楚地表明这两种解释是否正确,但基本的结论非常明确:快速浏览手机会让你的大脑感觉更加疲惫。如果是这样,该怎么办?)”可知,文章接下来会讲我们应该怎么办,也就是该如何更好地休息,故选B。

C
C phones can function as a reminder D. phones can benefit our paperwork
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Why screen time is harmful. B. How to take a better break.
C. Recommended online activities. D. Studies on phone addiction.
