A new study shows the world creates about 57 million tons of plastic pollution every year. Researchers say the amount is enough to fill New York City’s Central Park with plastic waste as high as the Empire State Building.
The researchers who joined this study examined plastic that goes into the open environment, not plastic that is properly burned or buried (埋葬). Governments fail to deal with waste properly that is a big reason why Southeast Asia and Africa produce the most plastic waste. India leads the world in producing plastic pollution, with more than 9.3 million tons a year. That number is far more than double the amount produced by the next big-polluting nations, Nigeria and Indonesia. Other top plastic polluters are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Brazil.
The study used AI to research plastics that were wrongly burned or just left in the open environment. In both cases, microplastics (微塑料) are spread, said Velis, the study’s lead writer. Several studies have looked at how common microplastics are in our drinking water and in our bodies. Scientists are still not quite sure how dangerous microplastics are for human health.
Some experts worried that the study only paid attention to pollution but ignored (忽视) plastic production. Plastic production is likely to rise from about 400 million tons a year to more than 1.1 billion tons. It lets out large amounts of greenhouse gas (温室气体) that makes the earth warmer. Neil Tangri, a researcher working on waste and environmental programs, said, “It’s not exact to say now all we need to do is manage the pollution better. It’s necessary but it’s not the whole story.”
36. Why is the Empire State Building mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To share a secret in the building.
B. To call for efforts on a green life.
C. To explain how serious the plastic pollution is.
D. To talk about the biggest polluted place.
37. Which of the following countries produces the least plastic waste?
A. India. B. Brazil. C. Indonesia. D. Nigeria.
38. What can we know about microplastics?
A. They’ve been found in drinking water. B. They only come from burned plastic.
C. They are good for the human body. D. They hide in everyone’s body.
39. What do Neil Tangri’s words mean?
A. It’s risky to manage the plastic waste.
B. The plastic industry is in great trouble.
C. We can’t just focus on the plastic pollution.
D. We can do nothing but manage the waste better.
40. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The world is producing too much plastic waste.
B. Microplastics require further research.
C. Efforts are needed to beat plastic production.
D. Plastic industry is warming the earth quickly.

Did you know magnets(磁铁)are all around you? Magnets help you do wonderful things! Keep reading! See if you think magnets have surprising uses.
Magnets Push or Pull
Look closely and you will see. Magnets can be found in a fridge. The magnet attracts or pulls the metal to make the door closed. Do you know how? A magnet pulls things made of metals called iron(铁)and steel. But it will not pull other things, such as a wooden pencil, a gold ring or a plastic toy, which means it does not attract all.
Magnets Have Two Poles(磁极)
Magnets can pull some things to them. Why is this true? The two ends of a magnet are its poles. Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Have you ever played with trains that have magnets? Sometimes, you try to put two train cars together, but push away from each other. Then you turn one of the cars around. The two cars attract each other rapidly. When the train cars push away, two of the same poles are facing each other. However, if you put the north and south poles together, they will be together immediately.
Magnets Can Be Influential
Scientists are using magnets in new ways. There is a new train that uses powerful magnets to travel more quickly. Magnets lift the train above the track(轨道)and push the train forward. The train appears to be moving as fast as wind! They are much faster than the trains we know. Besides, in medicine, the powerful magnet is used to help patients produce heat to kill cancer cells without harming their body. The powerful magnet can also be seen in many fields, like space, industry, and teaching. So it plays an important role in our life.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city. It has many tourists, especially during the summer. While tourism is great for the economy (经济), it’s at the cost of the environment.
This summer, Copenhagen started a project called CopenPay from July 15 to August 11. If tourists picked up litter, rode a bike around the city, or did other good things for the environment when they were having a tour, they could get rewards (奖励) in return. This was to get tourists to be friendly to the environment. The project was based on (以……为基础) trust. The participants (参加者) were only asked for a photo of doing good things for the environment.
There were 24 places offering rewards to the participants in the project, including museums, restaurants, and so on. While there were several places offering free ice cream or coffee for taking a bus, there were other experiences that were connected to local culture. Visitors to the National Gallery who brought plastic (塑料) waste could join in a workshop to turn the rubbish into a piece of local art.
