Chinese Nobel Prize-winning physicist Zhen Ning Yang, one of the most influential scientists in modern physics, passed away in Beijing on October 18 due to illness at the age of 103.
Born in 1922, Yang was brought up surrounded by the Tsinghua campus, where his father was a math professor. After finishing his undergraduate degree, he obtained his master’s degree from Tsinghua. He enrolled in the University of Chicago in the United States to pursue a doctorate in 1946 and was strongly influenced by Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, who had won the same Nobel Prize in 1938. He later became a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
Yang won the Nobel Prize in 1957 with Tsung-Dao Lee for their investigation of the so-called parity laws that led to “important discoveries regarding the elementary particles,” according to the Nobel Prize website. They were the first Chinese-born Nobel Prize winners in physics.
Professor Yang was deeply devoted to his homeland, making remarkable contributions to China’s scientific and educational developments. His visit to China in 1971 led to a wave of visits by overseas scholars, earning him recognition as the pioneer in building the bridge of academic exchange between China and the United States. He later proposed the restoration and strengthening of basic scientific research to China’s central leadership. He also raised funds to establish the “Committee on Educational Exchange with China”, which has continuously sponsored nearly 100Chinese scholars for advanced studies in the United States. These scholars later became the backbone of China’ s scientific and technological development. He undertook extensive work to promote China’s scientific and technological exchange and progress, offering advice and exercising significant influence on major Chinese scientific projects and the formulation (制定) of science and education policies.
After returning to Tsinghua University in 1999, he took on developing the Institute for Advanced Study as his new mission. He poured enormous effort into advancing fundamental disciplines like physics and cultivating talents at Tsinghua, making remarkable contributions that greatly impacted the reform and development of Chinese higher education.

An exhibition of paintings of ancient Chinese characters was held on July 13 in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, with the aim of promoting people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Based on the classic I Ching or The Book of Changes (《易经》), the display brought together the art of Ethiopia’s Dawit Muluneh and famous calligrapher Wu Jiuyi, who produced examples of calligraphy on the spot.
Speaking at the event, its organizer Gossa Oda says the exhibition was an opportunity to showcase cultural commonalities and shared knowledge between the two countries. “In organizing this exhibition, I wanted to communicate the ancient mystery of I Ching, which helps improve connectivity between Ethiopia and China and promote their shared future. A shared future starts from shared knowledge,” says Oda, who is also the owner of the Medemer Africa Art and Sculpture Space, where the 64 paintings are housed.
Oda says such an exhibition would strengthen people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges, stressing the importance of knowledge and civilizations for human development.
The paintings describes the 64 divinatory (占卜的) symbols found in I Ching, which represent the day-to-day interaction between man and nature. “They are meant to share knowledge and feelings with visitors, and descriptions are written in Chinese, English and Amharic.” says Muluneh, who painted all 64 paintings in a year. He says the exhibition can be considered a stepping stone to promote cultural exchange and create mutual situations for common development between the peoples of China and Ethiopia.
“The backgrounds of the paintings make use of Ethiopian styles and express the ideas of heaven, harvest, and relief, among others,” says Muluneh, who drew similarities and absorbed essential parts from the traditional arts of both countries.
In an interview, Wu says that he was taken by surprise when he saw an Ethiopian artist painting Chinese characters. The exhibition attracted members of the Chinese community in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian artists and painters, and school children.

White noise is defined as noise that contains a mixture of all audible frequencies that human ears can hear (about 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz). This type of noise includes low- midrange - and high-frequency sounds. Some noise types (or colors) get their names based on colors of light wavelengths. White light contains all the frequencies in the visible range, so you can see how white noise earned its name. Another way to think about it is as “20,000 tones all playing at the same time.”
Why is it good to sleep with white noise? It can be an effective tool for “noise masking” and help avoid trouble sleeping. Studies indicate that listening to white noise for sleep can have some payoffs, such as by blocking out other sounds that can startle you out of sleep.
Researchers believe that white noise is a noise that makes someone’s hearing threshold level (阀域值) reach its maximum rate, which means the presence sounds in the background become less capable of stimulating the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) region of the brain during sleep.
A study published in 2021 examined the effects of white noise on sleep for 10 New York City residents who live in a high-noise environment. While the sample size is small, the data showed that “white noise significantly improved sleep based on subjective and objective measurements in subjects complaining of difficulty sleeping due to high levels of environmental noise.” Further researches confirms these findings. For instance, white noise helped improved average total sleep time in patients admitted to a coronary care unit in a 2016 study, while research published in 2022 found that critically ill patients improved their sleep quality with the use of white noise.
White noise are now widely available. There’s one option to use a sleep machine app on your phone if you don’t want to purchase a device. If using white noise while studying, try listening to YouTube videos on your computer or phone completely for free, which can play in the background and drown out other distracting sounds.
32. Why is listening to white noise beneficial to sleep?
A. It influences the colors of light wavelengths. B. It plays many tones at the same time.
C. It blocks out other sounds that disturb sleep. D. It contains all audible frequencies.
33. What did the studies find about the effects of white noise on sleep?
A. White noise improved the sleep of residents in noisy areas.
B. White noise was ineffective for the sleep of critically ill patients.
C. White noise caused patients’ difficulty sleeping.
D. White noise improved average total sleep time largely.
34. How does the author introduce the ways of getting white noise?
A. By listing some figures. B. By giving an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving a definition.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Why is White Noise? B. What is White Noise?
C. How to Get White Noise? D. Where to Get White Noise?

Most passers-by noticed the lady standing in the bone-chilling cold outside the back of the supermarket. She was not young, holding a basket with bunches of flowers.
“Would you like the flowers, they are $3?” she asked me as I was walking past. I politely responded “No, thank you”, as I walked away and went inside the supermarket.
I was walking around the supermarket searching for the thing that I was needing to buy and thinking of that lady, standing in the cold holding her basket of flowers. Visualizing the beautiful flowers I had admired, her polite quiet voice and lonely figure, I wondered about her unknown story of standing in the cold with her basket. Maybe her family was in urgent need of money; maybe she was a lone soul to earn a living with her own hands…
I had my own personal struggles, I had to budget for everything and I appreciated that $3 was a lot for me, like many of us all and probably for her too. But it wasn’t my first thought when she had asked me about buying her flowers. My first thought was I didn’t have the cash but this couldn’t be used as an excuse for not buying those flowers. I had not carried cash with me for a few years and I thought many of us did the same.
When I went to the register to pay with my card I asked for $3 cash out. The staff member questioned me about the $3. I felt anxious about it quickly and tried to remember the money I had in my account And at the same time she pressed the button to process it. I had mentioned that I wanted to buy flowers from the lady who was selling them outside. Sigh of relief. I was glad to see it all had been accepted by the machine and the staff member handed me the $3.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
After walking out of the supermarket, I headed to the lady.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Museum of Bad Art! Yes, you heard it right — bad art. You might be wondering why we would celebrate something that seems so strange. But we believe that bad art brings out a different kind of beauty. I’m sure it will surprise you. At first, the co-founder, an art dealer named Scott Wilson, found a painting next to a garbage can and saved it. Then he put it on a special exhibition with some other unfavorable paintings. Unexpectedly, it became a huge hit. So, this museum is a reminder that creativity knows no limits, and that even the least liked pieces can move us deeply. As you journey through our collection, you will see pieces that challenge your traditional opinions of what art should be. Paintings featuring odd figures, strange colors, and unique subjects will catch your eye. The other co-founder of the museum, Marie Jackson, said it was built to celebrate an artist’s right to fail. At the Museum of Bad Art, beautiful mistakes become unforgettable masterpieces.

White noise is defined as noise that contains a mixture of all audible frequencies that human ears can hear (about 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz). This type of noise includes low-, midrange - and high-frequency sounds.
C 33. A 34. B 35. A

故填who。
consist of“包括,由……组成”。此处描述的是一般事实,所以时态用一般现在时,且主语The book是第三人称单数,所以谓语动词用consist的第三人称单数形式。故填consists。
【58题详解】
考查介词。句意:邓洛普从遥远的甘肃乡村探索到历史悠久的扬州美食。from... to...“从……到……”,为固定短语,其中to为介词。故填to。
结合短语encourage sb. to do sth. 故填to appreciate。
故填an。
故填is reflected。

Dear Mr. Smith,
Thank you for proposing the two wonderful ideas for English Week. I would recommend the English Song Competition for the following reasons.
First, singing English songs is a fun way to improve pronunciation and vocabulary naturally. Many students enjoy music, so participation would be high. Second, this activity allows creative performances-solo, duets, or even group acts, making it more engaging than a traditional contest. Lastly, we can invite judges to give feedback on both language skills and stage presence, adding educational value.
I’m sure this event will be both fun and educational for everyone. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
After walking out of the supermarket, I headed to the lady.

I gave her $3 but was surprised when she handed me the change.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After walking out of the supermarket, I headed to the lady. She was standing there, trembling in the cold. No sooner had she noticed my approach than her weather-beaten face lit up. I said shyly “I would like to buy some of your flowers.”. On hearing that, she instantly put the basket of flowers in front of me, wearing a big and warm smile. The flowers were in full bloom, dancing in the wind. I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted.
I gave her $3 but was surprised when she handed me the change. I couldn't help but ask the price of the flowers. “$3 for all!” she explained. Without hesitation, I told her to keep the change. She took the money with shaking hands, tears welling up in her eyes. As I walked away, I hoped someone else could walk up to her and buy the rest flowers. We were all going through our own struggles but no matter how little we could do, it would make a difference.
