I watch their Insta stories, YouTube videos and generally keep track of what they are up to by means of social media. These “celebrities (名人)” encourage me to pursue my dreams, and unlike my physical friends, are often more accessible — just a YouTube click away. So when I found myself telling a story the other day to one of my friends at a cafe and then casually referring to one of these online personalities as “my friend”, I suddenly became aware of the blurred (模糊的) line between my physical and virtual social lives. I was retelling a YouTuber’ s story about how to practice appreciation as if it were my story to tell. The scary part is that it came so naturally that I had to pause and think twice about what had just come out of my mouth. How did I get to the point of referring to someone I had never actually spoken with as a “friend”? Between trying to make a living and maintaining social relationships, it has become especially easy for millennials (those born between the early 1980s and 1990s) to turn to artificial social closeness to meet their basic human needs for social interactions. So how do we really know who our friends are in a world where the term “friend” seems so blurred? Is it right to call someone a friend who you’ ve never spoken with in real life? Sometimes I worry that my online friendships are taking away the time I could be spending forming meaningful relationships in real life. In an article in Psychology Today, Alex Pattakos claims that our quest to create more and more friends through popular social media platforms has led to us feeling more disconnected in reality. His research states that we can only maintain around 150 real friendships and the desire to have more connections leads to emotional attachments to online celebrities, referred to as parasocial interactions, and consequently detachment (分离) from our real life connections. Do you make a distinction between your online and offline “friends” ? If so, how? 4. What does the author think of his real-life friends? A. They are more difficult to reach. B. They often cause him much trouble. C. They are fond of following “celebrities”. D. They mostly lack interest in social media. 5. Which of the following puzzled the author? A. The definition of physical friends. B. Some phrases used in online language. C. The proper way to practice appreciation online. D. The distinction between physical and online friends. 6. What can we infer about “millennials” from paragraph 3 ? A. They are skillful in AI technology. B. They have great difficulty making a living. C. They are eager to seek online friendships. D. They rarely build firm social relationships. 7. What’s the author’s attitude to online friendships? A. Casual. B. Opposed. C. Supportive. D. Ambiguous. A 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段中的“and unlike my physical friends, are often more accessible — just a YouTube click away.(与我的亲朋好友不同,他们通常更易于访问——只需点击YouTube即可)”可知,作者认为,与现实世界真实的朋友相比,社交媒体上结识的朋友“触手可及”,很容易随时联系到。故选A。 根据第二段中的“I suddenly became aware of the blurred (模糊的) line between my physical and virtual social lives. (我突然意识到我的物理和虚拟社交生活之间的模糊的界限)”和文章最后一段中的“Do you make a distinction between your online and offline “friends” ? If so, how? (你区分线上和线下的“朋友”吗?如果是这样,怎么做?)”可知,作者对如何区分网络世界和真实世界的朋友的界限感到困惑。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“it has become especially easy for millennials (those born between the early 1980s and 1990s) to turn to artificial social closeness to meet their basic human needs for social interactions. (千禧一代(出生于 1980 年代初至 1990 年代之间的人)变得特别容易转向人为的社会亲密关系来满足他们对社会互动的基本人类需求)”可知,由于网络社交媒体的发展,千禧一代更倾向于在网络上寻求社交亲密互动。故选C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Sometimes I worry that my online friendships are taking away the time I could be spending forming meaningful relationships in real life. (有时我担心我的在线友谊会占用我在现实生活中建立有意义的关系的时间)”以及引用Alex Pattakos的观点可知,作者对网络友谊持有反对的态度。故选B。 C Spiders are pretty remarkable. They live almost everywhere, from rainforests to deserts. Some even spend most of their lives underwater. They are smarter than you think, with some able to make plans and count. Scientists think they might even dream when they sleep. Yet many people find these eight-legged animals scary. Now, it seems, fake news maybe mostly to blame. Media reports about people’s encounters with spiders tend to be full of falsehoods, a new study finds. “The vast majority of the spider content out there is about their being scary and hurting people, ”says arachnologist Catherine Scott. In reality, researchers note, “Spiders almost never bite people.” In fact, many spiders protect us by eating insects, such as mosquitoes, which spread disease. Even spiders that could pose a threat rarely bite people, Scott says. For the new study, Scott and their colleagues analyzed more than 5,000 online newspaper stories about humans and spiders. Each had been published between 2010 and 2020. They came from 81 countries and were written in 40 languages. The researchers didn’t just find errors in the stories. More than four in ten, articles had overblown the spiders’ behaviors and often used sensational words like killers and nightmares to describe them. If people knew the truth about spiders, they would spend less time blaming them for bites caused by other animals, Scott argues. People might also be less likely to kill spiders with pesticides that are poisonous to other species including humans. Clearing spiders’ name would be good for them, too. Say, for instance, the ones in your house that don’t get squashed (压扁) out of fear. Improving spiders’ public image could even boost conservation efforts in general. “Spiders are kind of unique in that they seem to be really good at grabbing people’s attention,” says Lisa Taylor, an arachnologist who was not involved in the study. “If that attention is paired with real information about how fascinating they are, then I think spiders are well-suited to serve as tiny ambassadors for wildlife in general.” 8. What probably contributes to spiders’ ill names? A. Scientific studies. B. Untrue stories. C. Their errors. D. Their ugly looks. 9. What can we learn about spiders from Paragraph 2? A. Spiders are smarter than you. B. Spiders never bite people. C. Most spiders spread disease. D. Spiders protect people in a way. 10. What can we infer from Lisa Taylor’s words? A. Spiders are not good at disguising themselves. B. Spiders would be better protected if treated rightly. C. Public attention is consistent with real information. D. Improvement in spiders’ public image makes no sense. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Spiders Unfairly Negative B. Spiders’ Public Image C. Well-suited Ambassadors D. Spiders Actually Scary 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“Yet many people find these eight-legged animals scary. Now, it seems, fake news maybe mostly to blame. (然而,许多人觉得这些八条腿的动物很可怕。现在看来,假新闻可能是罪魁祸首)”可知,不真实的报道是人们感觉蜘蛛可怕的原因,故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“In fact, many spiders protect us by eating insects, such as mosquitoes, which spread disease. (事实上,许多蜘蛛通过吃昆虫来保护我们,比如传播疾病的蚊子)”可知,蜘蛛在某种程度上保护人类,故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中Lisa Taylor说的话“If that attention is paired with real information about how fascinating they are, then I think spiders are well-suited to serve as tiny ambassadors for wildlife in general. (如果这种关注与关于它们有多迷人的真实信息相辅相成,那么我认为蜘蛛总体上非常适合担任野生动物的微型大使)”可知,如果公众能关注到蜘蛛的真实信息,蜘蛛会得到更好的保护。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Spiders are pretty remarkable. (蜘蛛是非常了不起的)”及最后一段中“Improving spiders’ public image could even boost conservation efforts in general. (改善蜘蛛的公众形象甚至可以促进整体的保护工作)”可知,文章主要讲述很多人觉得蜘蛛可怕,关于蜘蛛的假新闻往往充满了谎言,事实上蜘蛛很了不起,在某种程度上会保护人类,改善蜘蛛的公众形象能促进整体的保护工作,故A项“蜘蛛不公平的负面形象”适合作为文章标题,B项“蜘蛛的公众形象”没有突出本文强调的负面形象,故选A。 D My grandma passed away last week. My mum began the painful yet necessary task of sorting through her belongings. “Is there anything you want from grandma’s flat?” Mum texted me. “Her aloe (芦荟), please.” I required zero thinking time. Sometime around 1975, Grandma, always believing good things would happen in the future, received this plant as a gift, which she appreciated and placed in her doorway. It came from the local butcher. Five years later, my mum married the butcher’s son and had me. Grandma revealed to me this particular plant was a living relationship between the two families. And so was I. Recently, whenever we visited Grandma’s flat, I attempted to fix this concept in my children’s minds. “That was a gift your great-grandma bought your other great-grandma! It’s older than me!” Then my kids would nod and ask Grandma for a sweet. Numerous times, Grandma gave me cuttings or clippings of the plant, hoping I might raise my own and continue the legend. Yet, every time, my new branch died with my awful gardening skills. But that didn’t used to matter, because I could turn to Grandma, who would wait and accept my disturbance without becoming upset. Then I got another clipping and tried again. But now I can’t. So, I decided that the plant will go and live with Ann, my mother-in-law, who is a genius with a greenhouse. The plan is for Ann to keep hold of the original plant. In time, she can teach me how to deal with its cuttings properly, and then maybe one day I can settle the plant in my place. In the meantime, Ann will allocate (分配) clippings among my relatives, as Grandma used to do. My wife’s two sisters, for example, are both better at tending plants than I am, so it is quite imaginable that they, too, will offer cuttings of the plant to their partners, spreading this loving plant across my entire extended family. 12. Why did the author want his grandma’s aloe? A. He wanted to pass it down to others. B. He showed a preference for gardening. C. He had a pleasant memory of the plant. D. He received it as a gift from his grandma. 13. Which of the following best describes the author’s grandma? A. Optimistic and patient. B. Generous and helpful. C. Honest and fashionable. D. Humorous and skillful. 14. The author took the aloe to his mother-in-law to A. display his skills in gardening B. have the plant better cared for C. announce his grandma’s death D. protect the plant from dying out 15. What may be the best title for the text? A. Aloe: my family bond B. Aloe: a mysterious plant C. Grandma: my life coach D. Grandma: a lovely gardener 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. How would you feel if moving to a new town meant losing track of your friends? What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters? This was how things worked not so very long ago. Thanks to advances in technology, how we make friends and communicate with them has changed significantly. Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with. Social media tools let us see what our friends are up to and maintain friendships without missing a beat. The digital age also enables us to find people who share our interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. Whatever our hobbies, the Internet can connect us with others who also enjoy doing them, even if they live on the other side of the world. But when you “friend” people online does this mean that they really are your friends? It depends. If people always exchange true personal information online, then yes, these friendships can be real and meaningful. But we need to keep in mind that what we see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person. On social media sites, people tend to post only good things that make them appear happy and friendly. But smiling photos can hide real problems. Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog. A young person could be old; a woman could be a man; we could even be sharing our information with criminals. But this doesn’t mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Although technology has changed the way we are connected, the meaning of friendship and our longing for friends remain the same. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods. 56. post, maintain, technology, person, track, attitude, interest, significance, write, conclude, approach, true ways of making friends ________ change of making friends) past People lost ________ of their friends when moving to a new town. My father had no choice but to leave my bedroom. Soon, my mother came in and asked me to get up to play football. I immediately jumped out of my bed and ran away. I didn’t know how my father would feel when he returned to my bedroom. There are many interesting stories which are the most valuable memories to my parents and me. Possible version two: Sunday November 23 Sunny Today was one of those days when something unexpectedly happened at home, and I just have to write it down before I forget! Mom was cooking spaghetti with meatballs while I chopped vegetables. Suddenly, our cat, Whiskers jumped onto the counter. Mom scolded him, and he quickly leapt off…right into the open bag of flour. Whiskers, covered in white powder, panicked and dashed around the house. He left floury paw prints on the sofa, the carpet, and even the curtains! In the end, we spent an hour cleaning up the mess. A. Casual. B. Opposed. C. Supportive. D. Ambiguous. C Spiders are pretty remarkable. Spiders Actually Scary D My grandma passed away last week. Grandma: a lovely gardener Things To Remember On Your First Solo Travel Adventure If you’ve ever thought about just taking a trip yourself instead of waiting for someone to join you, you’re not alone. ____16____ However, do you count yourself among the many who have tried it? But when you “friend” people online, does this mean that they really are your friends?
